Texas’ Steve Sarkisian discusses spreading the field with playmakers

Sarkisian’s mentality appears to be this: We’re going to spread you out. Good luck stopping us.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian is confident in his team. It’s not an arrogant confidence, but one that displays strong belief his players will get things done.

Sarkisian discussed the matchup problems his skill players present. It appears he has no problem splitting four receivers wide. He said the following on his loaded set of offensive skill players.

“If we can deploy five people on the field, you can’t double everybody and load the box and stop the run.”

Again, it’s not arrogant but it’s certainly true. You cannot stop Xavier Worthy, Ja’Tavion Sanders or AD Mitchell in single coverage. And certainly if you double others, Isaiah Neyor and Jordan Whittington will feast on the defense.

The talent present on the Forty Acres limits the possible schematic solutions opposing defense can use to stop Texas. And, frankly, it could narrow down the amount of coverage looks starting quarterback Quinn Ewers has to prepare to read. Some coverages simply aren’t going to work.

Sarkisian might be confident but the confidence is warranted. He has built a dominant force to be reckoned with in Austin. And it could be what takes the Texas offense from above average to among the nation’s elite.

Texas’ 2023 recruiting class named best offensive group in the nation

Texas’ 2023 class is stacked on the offensive side of the ball.

With the 2023 recruiting cycle coming to a close on national signing day, On3 Sports recognized some of the best classes in the nation.

On3 named Texas’ class as the best offensive group in the country in its 2023 recruiting superlatives.

The Longhorns are the only program with three five-star offensive signees: Five-Star Plus+ QB Arch Manning, running back Cedric Baxter and wide receiver Johntay Cook. Add in electric wideout Ryan Niblett, there’s some serious firepower there to work with. All four could potentially see the field in year one.

Arch Manning is the ring leader of the class at the quarterback position. He ranks as the highest-rated signal-caller Texas has signed since Vince Young.

The skill position unit heading to Austin is stacked with dynamic playmakers. Five-stars Cedric Baxter Jr and Johntay Cook have a great chance to see the field early. Wide receivers DeAndre Moore and Ryan Niblett possess high upsides as well.

Texas signed five offensive linemen this cycle as it continues to add quality talent to the unit. This class is a great follow up to the historically great offensive line class Texas landed in 2022.

Steve Sarkisian will have plenty of weapons to work with on offense as the program prepares for the move to the SEC.

Texas TE Ja’Tavion Sanders is primed for a breakout season

No doubt that Sanders will play a major role in the Longhorns’ offense this season.

Ja’Tavion Sanders did not see the field much during his freshman season in 2021. The former five-star played sparingly behind veteran tight ends Cade Brewer and Jared Wiley.

With both Brewer and Wiley moving on this offseason, an opportunity has presented itself for Sanders. Steve Sarkisian has had nothing but glowing things to say about Sanders’ development over the course of fall camp.

Sarkisian gave the nod for “best hands” to Sanders over the likes of Xavier Worthy, Jordan Whittington and Bijan Robinson. Looking at this clip from his senior year of high school, it is easy to see why.

With starting wide receiver Isaiah Neyor out for the season with an ACL injury, Sanders is one of the prime candidates to get some of those targets.

No doubt that Sanders will play a major role in the Longhorns’ offense this season. He is a special athlete ready to be unleashed.

The highest rated offensive players Texas has signed since 2018.

Texas has a strong history of attracting major talent to its program. The Longhorns consistently finish inside the the top 10 despite not having tons of success on the field as of late.
