Alabama Football: 5 position groups to watch this spring

Alabama Football: 5 position groups to watch this spring

Although Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide were not able to claim a national championship this past season, the 2021 team still accomplished quite a bit.

The Tide won the SEC Championship and finished with an impressive 13-2 record and Bryce Young became the first Alabama quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy.

Now that the season has come to an end, let’s shift our focus to spring practice and which position groups Alabama fans should be watching when the Tide returns to practice in a couple of months.

Alabama’s 2022 early enrollees include nine top 100 recruits

The season has come to an end and it is time to start shifting our focus to the team that will take the field in 2022.

Nick Saban and his staff had a fantastic early signing period back in December, and several of those prospects have already enrolled at the university.

Among those that have enrolled early, nine of the twelve are top 100 recruits according to the On3 consensus rankings.

Below is the complete list of early enrollees and their On3 consensus rankings.

5 takeaways from Alabama’s early signing day

5 early signing day takeaways for Alabama

Yesterday, Nick Saban and Alabama hauled in some of the top talent from around the country on early signing day.

Currently, the Tide sits with the second-ranked class in the nation according to On3.

Now that the dust has settled and we have had time to reflect on some of the events from a wild Wednesday, I thought we could take a few moments to look at some of the key takeaways from this steller class for the Crimson Tide.

Let’s get started!

SIGNED: 4-Star TE Elijah Brown inks NLI, joins Crimson Tide

Tight End Elijah Brown signs with the Crimson Tide!

Alabama has signed another offensive position skill player in four-star tight end Elijah Brown out of Dayton, Ohio.

Brown stands at 6-foot-5, 230 pounds and will join the Crimson Tide, following some very impressive tight ends to come out of Nick Saban’s program.

He held offers from programs that have a strong history of producing NFL-level tight ends. Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Penn State, LSU, Nebraska and others recruited the big tight end.

Highlights: Every touchdown in the Mater Dei win over St. John Bosco

See every touchdown from Mater Dei’s win over St. John Bosco.

Mater Dei has yet to pass on the crown. St. John Bosco could not force the No. 1 team in the Super 25 out of pole position on Friday night as the Monarchs maintained the upper hand and won 42-21.

After a back-and-forth first half in which neither team led by more than a touchdown, Mater Dei outscored the Braves 21-0 in the second half to get the victory over its rival. Between the second quarter and end of the game, the Monarchs scored 28 straight points.

Elijah Brown was phenomenal, throwing five touchdown passes, two of which were to C.J. Williams and two to Cooper Barkate.

Despite that dominance, it was not a simple victory for Mater Dei. St. John Bosco took the lead multiple times in the first half, and the chess match wasn’t won until halftime adjustments were instituted. Here is every touchdown from the game, with Mater Dei scoring first.

It didn’t take long for the Braves to answer. Katin Houser did a nice job avoiding the rush and scrambled into the end zone.

Bosco kept the momentum with another touchdown, taking the 14-7 lead off a Colin Chase score. He caught the reception over the middle, bounced off a defender and took off for the end zone.

The Monarchs wouldn’t stay down. Brown connected with his star receiver for another score, as he dropped a dime to the contested Williams for the receiver’s second touchdown of the game.

Bosco answered. James added to his impressive performance with a 22-yard score.

In the first half, Bosco quarterbacks Houser and Pierce Clarkson combined for 13-for-17 passing for 245 yards, according to the LA Time’s Eric Sondheimer.

It continued going back-and-forth with neither team able to take a substantial lead over the other. The Monarchs tied the game at 21, which would hold for the remainder of the half.

Barkate, who caught the final touchdown of the first half, would open the second with a score as well.

Williams lofted the ball over another Monarchs-Braves receiver-defender matchup, and Barkate caught it and walked it home.

Finally, as the third quarter was coming to an end, a team took a two-touchdown lead. Jack Ressler was targeted over the middle, bobbled it as a defender tried to wrap him up, but managed to pull it down and get to the end zone.

The Monarchs held for defensive stop after defensive stop. After five Brown passing touchdowns, Ajon Bryant broke free for a 29-yard rushing touchdown to ice the game with just over two minutes left.

The Monarchs beat Bosco 34-17 in the only matchup between the two in last year’s shortened season. If this year is truly back to normal, the two will likely play each other one more time — for the Southern Section Championship.

10 players to watch in showdown between No. 1 Mater Dei and No. 3 St. John Bosco

The Mater Dei and St. John Bosco football game is on tap. Here are 10 players to watch, from Elijah Brown to Matayo Uiagalelei.

A pair of schools that are perennial national championship contenders. Teams that produce four- and five-star talent each year. Rivals that are almost assured of a regular-season matchup and a Southern Section showdown at the end of the season. It’s time for Mater Dei and St. John Bosco.

The Mater Dei Monarchs, ranked No. 1 in the Super 25, are 3-0 entering the Friday matchup. The St. John Bosco Braves, at No. 3 in the nation, are 5-0.

With so many D1 prospects on the field, it can be overwhelming to find which players to key in on. Here are five players per team to watch. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Pacific Time.

Mater Dei freshman QB Elijah Brown tosses three touchdown passes in HS debut

Mater Dei freshman quarterback Elijah Brown fired three touchdown passes in his high school debut Friday night.

Mater Dei freshman phenom Elijah Brown was more than up for the task of taking on starting quarterback duties at the California powerhouse on Friday night, tossing three touchdown passes in his high school debut and a 52-3 rout of JSerra Catholic.

Brown wasted no time making his presence felt on the varsity level, finding senior wide receiver Josiah Zamora in the corner of the end zone at the 5:05 mark of the first quarter to give Mater Dei an early 7-0 lead.

Brown stayed hot on Mater Dei’s ensuing offensive possession, hitting junior wideout Cooper Barkate to extend the lead to 14-0. Brown’s third touchdown pass of the night came in the second half with Mater Dei already dominating, as Brown connected with Quincy Craig for six to make it a 45-3 game.

Brown, along with the rest of Mater Dei’s starters, was pulled after his third touchdown pass. While three touchdown passes is a solid outing for any quarterback, it can be argued that Brown’s most valuable contribution to Mater Dei’s season-opening win was his clean play under center. He did not account for a single turnover, which is key for his development moving forward.

Brown now joins Matt Barkley, Georgia quarterback and former five-star recruit J.T. Daniels and Todd Marinovich as the fourth freshman to start under center for Mater Dei.

Alabama lands commitment from 2022 4-star TE

On Friday, four-star tight end Elijah Brown took to social media to announce his commitment to the University of Alabama.

Alabama just finished with the No. 1 recruiting for the 2021 cycle, but its sights have already been set on 2022. Will this be another top grouping for Nick Saban and company?

Well, the Crimson Tide just landed an important piece toward making that happen. On Friday, four-star tight end Elijah Brown took to social media to announce his decision. The choice? Alabama, of course.

Alabama has added a tight end in each of the last two recruiting classes. Caden Clark was technically in the 2020 group, but he delayed enrolling for a year and will be there this spring.

Robbie Ouzts was a part of the 2021 class, but more star power is needed at the position.

Enter Brown, who is a four-star prospect, according to the 247Sports composite. He is listed as the No. 277 overall player, the No. 13 tight end and No. 11 player from the state of Ohio.

The Dayton, Ohio, native chose Alabama over Auburn, LSU, USC and several other prominent programs.

Brown is the third Tide commit for the 2022 class, joining four-star linebacker Robert Woodyard and strong side defensive end Walter Bob. The class is rated No. 23 in the nation (No. 6 in the SEC).

2022 TE Elijah Brown lands offer from Alabama

Elijah Brown, a three-star tight end in the 2022 class out of Ohio, earned an Alabama offer on Monday morning.

Alabama continues to work on its 2021 recruiting class, but the coaching staff is also still looking to get a jump start on the 2022 group as well. With that being said, tight end Elijah Brown landed an offer from the Crimson Tide on Monday.

The three-star prospect out of Wayne High School in Dayton (Ohio) took to Twitter to announce the news:

As mentioned previously, Brown is rated as a three-star prospect, according to 247Sports. He’s also rated as the No. 20 tight end and No. 13 player from the state of Ohio.

At 6-foot-5, 230 pounds, the Wayne High School standout brings size, length and athleticism to the tight end position. And with Alabama is expected to lose multiple players at that spot (Miller Forristall and Carl Tucker) following this season, the staff is looking to fill that void for the future.

In addition to his offer from the Crimson Tide, Brown also holds offers from programs such as Michigan State, Georgia Tech, Arizona State and Akron. Expect his recruiting to take off in the near future, however, as teams start to get a look at the impressive athlete.
