Former Bengals CB Eli Apple signing with Miami Dolphins

A former Bengals defender heads elsewhere in the AFC.

Former Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Eli Apple is no longer a free agent after signing with the Miami Dolphins.

Apple played last year with the Bengals on a one-year deal worth $3.75 million. Over the 2022 season, he defended eight passes with no interceptions and had 49 tackles.

Apple spent the last two seasons with the Bengals, in which they reached the Super Bowl and the AFC Championship.

With the Miami Dolphins, Apple will now be teammates with Tyreek Hill, who he argued with on Twitter after a tough battle in the 2022 AFC Championship game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

“Monday practice gone be fun,” Hill said on Twitter, reacting to the signing of Apple.

Dolphins replace Jalen Ramsey with… ex-Saints CB Eli Apple?

The Dolphins will be without Jalen Ramsey while he recovers from knee surgery, so they replaced him with… ex-Saints corner Eli Apple?

The last time we saw Eli Apple he had turned heel on the New Orleans Saints, taking every opportunity to trash his former teammates, coaches, fans, and even the local cuisine — before he shut down his Twitter account after giving up too many touchdown passes in the playoffs, ending the Cincinnati Bengals’ Super Bowl bid.

But now he’s back: with the Miami Dolphins, who signed Apple as a possible fill-in for Jalen Ramsey, who is expected to return from knee surgery in December. Apple’s return to the news cycle was welcomed by his new teammate Tyreek Hill, who let it be known how eager he is to practice against his new teammate at training camp.

Unfortunately, Saints fans won’t see their team play the Dolphins until 2025 at the soonest, barring a Super Bowl matchup in the immediate future. And if that’s the case, they’ll have much bigger fish to fry than Apple.

Giants set to face Eli Apple in Week 5 after signing with Dolphins

The New York Giants will see Eli Apple in 2023 after the veteran cornerback signed with the Miami Dolphins.

There are few names New York Giants fans hear that trigger the kind of negative response that Eli Apple does.

A former first-round pick of the Giants in 2016, Apple’s career in New York was nothing short of a disaster, leading to his being dealt to the New Orleans Saints after two-plus seasons with Big Blue.

Since then, Apple has never shied away from running his mouth whenever he gets the chance, and sometimes it’s directed at the Giants and their fans. Even his mom, Annie, has gotten into the fray at times, making the pair a packaged deal.

Bear in mind, Apple has never panned out to be the player the Giants hoped he would be when he was originally drafted, no matter where he’s landed in recent years.

Apple has been quiet this offseason, as he’s remained a free agent all the way until the start of training camps around the league. However, that quiet looks set to end.

The Dolphins announced on Sunday that Apple is going to South Beach, with the veteran corner reportedly signing a one-year deal after the Dolphins recently lost star cornerback Jalen Ramsey to injury.

And, of course, this now sets Apple and the Giants up on a crash course for Week 5, when New York will travel to Miami to take on the Dolphins. That is, assuming Apple makes the team.

Former Ohio State cornerback Eli Apple signs with the Miami Dolphins

Starting fresh in South Florida. #GoBucks

Former Ohio State cornerback, Eli Apple, is signing with the Miami Dolphins on a one-year deal according to the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

This signing comes just days after the Dolphins’ secondary took a big hit with the news of Jalen Ramsey’s knee injury. The star corner tore his meniscus in training camp and is expected to be sidelined until December.

Apple is often subject to criticism among fans. While he hasn’t lived up to expectations as a top-ten pick, he has carved out a solid career for himself in the NFL. Apple has started 88 games so far in his career, including 10 playoff appearances.

He is entering the eighth season of his career and his fifth team. Apple most recently played for the Cincinnati Bengals where he spent two seasons starting in 30 regular season games and seven playoff contests.

The expectations for Apple in Miami won’t be super high, but he does provide starting experience and a viable option to utilize while Ramsey recovers from his injury.

Colts listed as potential landing spot for CB Eli Apple

Bleacher Report believes the Colts are a potential landing spot for CB Eli Apple.

With training camp just a few weeks away, the Indianapolis Colts may be looking to add some depth to the cornerback room entering the 2023 season.

Following the release of expected starter Isaiah Rodgers Sr., who was suspended for gambling violations, the Colts have even more question marks surrounding the cornerback position.

So when Bleacher Report listed potential landing spots for the top free agents, the Colts were among the teams for Eli Apple.

Between 2021 and 2022, Apple took on a prominent role with a playoff-caliber Cincinnati Bengals squad, recording 18 pass breakups and two interceptions. Last year, he allowed a 57 percent completion rate but gave up one too many big plays over the top, surrendering 14.6 yards per completion.

To get the best out of Apple, a team may need to provide deep-safety help to prevent wideouts from racking up yards on deep receptions toward the boundary. Nonetheless, the veteran cornerback can be a serviceable asset if he keeps the action in front of him.

Colts safety Julian Blackmon has allowed a 106.6 passer rating in all three of his seasons, which makes him a questionable fit with Apple. Still, Indianapolis badly needs a veteran cornerback after they released Isaiah Rodgers, whom the league suspended for a year because of a gambling violation.

We listed Apple as a potential free-agent replacement for Rodgers Sr. following the news of his release. It’s not necessarily an exciting pairing, but the Colts need to add experience to the room.

Apple is far from a perfect product, and he’s had his share of lapses in coverage, but he has starting experience, which is something the Colts need in the cornerback room.

5 free-agent CBs the Colts could sign to replace Isaiah Rodgers

Here a few veteran CBs the Colts could consider to replace Isaiah Rodgers.

The Indianapolis Colts cornerback room already had plenty of question marks entering the 2023 season, and now they’ll be without one of their projected starters.

Former sixth-round pick Isaiah Rodgers Sr. was poised to be one of the starting cornerbacks on the boundary entering the final year of his rookie deal, but he was waived following a suspension due to violating the league’s gambling policy.

The Colts used three of their 12 selections in the 2023 NFL draft at the cornerback position in the forms of Julius Brents (second round), Darius Rush (fifth round) and Jaylon Jones (seventh round). All have promising traits to be significant contributors.

But the Colts may need to look at the free-agent market to bring in some veteran experience considering Kenny Moore II is the only player in the room with more than four career starts in the NFL.

Without further ado, here are five veteran free-agent cornerbacks the Colts could consider signing to replace the recently departed Rodgers:

12 remaining free-agent cornerbacks the Panthers could still sign

Here are 12 notable cornerbacks who are still available in free agency:

On Wednesday, ESPN NFL insider Field Yates suggested that the Carolina Panthers add some cornerback depth before the offseason comes to an end. But let’s be honest, we really didn’t need a reminder.

Between injuries to starters Jaycee Horn and Donte Jackson as well as the lack of reliable reinforcements behind them, the Panthers are still quite thin at the position. So, if they end up dipping back into the free-agent market this summer, here are 12 corners that could get a call.

Bengals should still have interest in re-signing CB Eli Apple

The Bengals should still bring back Eli Apple.

The Cincinnati Bengals should probably still have an interest in bringing back free-agent cornerback Eli Apple at some point this summer.

Like we went longform on back in February, Apple was an oddly underrated part of what the Bengals accomplished over the last two seasons defensively while stepping in as a starter when not originally expected to do so.

While running through each team’s offseason so far, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell just raised this point as well:

What’s left to do: Reunite with Apple? He rebuilt his career as a starting cornerback on the Bengals over the past two seasons, so I’m surprised there wasn’t at least some market for him in free agency. He is still out there, which seems remarkable in a league in which every team needs more cornerbacks.

It’s a no-brainer, provided Apple wants to be back, too. Cam Taylor-Britt continues to blossom as a starter, but the defense will throw rookie DJ Turner to the wolves early if No. 1 Chidobe Awuzie isn’t all the way back from his Halloween ACL tear.

The context is important — this is a secondary that already lost core pieces with Jessie Bates and Vonn Bell gone. Veterans who know the system and can help others situationally are a nice thing to have, especially in an AFC absolutely stacked amid the ongoing arms race (Aaron Rodgers is there now, DeAndre Hopkins could be soon).

This isn’t to say Apple should come back and be the starter over the young guys. But, social media trolling aside (and Twitter isn’t real life, believe it or not), he’s been an important part of the program and even admits joining the Bengals revived his love for football.

Funnily enough, besides things like extensions for Joe Burrow and Tee Higgins, bringing back Apple is one of the best remaining moves the Bengals could make this summer.

We’re looking at every No. 10 overall pick selected since the 2000 NFL Draft and the Philadelphia Eagles’ chances of landing an impact player

The Eagles need impact players on both sides of the ball, and with two first-round picks in this month’s draft, Howie Roseman will have another opportunity to add depth to a Super Bowl-caliber roster.

Top ten picks are expected to be dynamic players, and the list of No. 10 overall selections has a handful of misses, along with several hits and a few Hall of Fame-worthy performers.

With the NFL draft fast approaching, we’re looking at every player selected with the tenth pick since 2000.

31 former Saints players who are still free agents

From draft picks of days past to undrafted fan-favorites and trade acquisitions, here’s a look at some of the former Saints players who are still free agents:

It’s been a busy week for the New Orleans Saints in free agency. They’ve let six players walk away on deals with new teams while bringing in a couple of new starters at defensive tackle in Nathan Shepherd and Khalen Saunders, plus a veteran running back to pair with Alvin Kamara — Jamaal Williams has already endeared himself to fans.

Now they’re busy filling out the roster with one-year contracts for experienced free agents like defensive backs Jonathan Abram and Lonnie Johnson Jr., as well as right tackle Storm Norton and defensive tackle Malcolm Roach. The Saints are going to continue monitoring the market in search of options for improving their team.

That could mean more reunions with some of their former players. There are currently 31 former Saints who are still unsigned free agents, including players from the 2022 team and those who were drafted by New Orleans, signed as undrafted rookies, or acquired through trades with other teams. Here’s a quick look at the group:
