Saints reopen Ohio State pipeline in way-too-early 2025 mock draft

The Saints reopened their Ohio State pipeline in this way-too-early 2025 mock draft, but would they really pass on every first-round QB to do it?

It’s too early to seriously predict which players might be picked in the 2025 NFL draft, but the event draws interest year-round and speculation won’t slow down just because we’re in a quiet stretch on the calendar.

The latest way-too-soon 2025 mock draft comes from Curt Popejoy over at Draft Wire. While the New Orleans Saints have a solid position at No. 9 (which would be the payoff for struggling through a hard-to-watch season with fewer wins than losses), in this projection New Orleans passed on every quarterback in the draft. The first passer, Georgia’s Carson Beck, wasn’t drafted until No. 16.

For all the talk about next year’s class being better (which is a popular draft narrative every year, whether it’s true or not) there’s a real possibility the Saints could be stuck with mediocrity under center. If the Saints are bad enough to be picking this high, it’s because Derek Carr is playing poorly enough to be replaced.

Instead of drafting Beck or any other quarterback to replace Derek Carr, the Saints started this mock draft by spending the ninth overall pick on his Georgia teammate: left tackle Earnest Greene III. That pick is easy to understand. New Orleans has struggled to get much out of Trevor Penning after drafting him in 2022’s first round, and he’s now moving to right tackle while their 2024 first rounder, Taliese Fuaga, is being asked to play on the left side. If Penning is a total bust and Fuaga has to move back to his college position, it makes sense to draft a true left tackle to man that spot. Maybe the vision is for Spencer Rattler or Jake Haener to push Carr for the starting gig in 2025.

While that first-round pick makes plenty of sense, it’s easier to get excited about the Saints’ haul in Round 2. They selected Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson at No. 41 overall, making him the sixth running back to be picked in the first two rounds. That would be a huge shift after just one running back was drafted in that range this year.

Henderson has been a big-play threat at Ohio State, scoring 32 touchdown runs while picking up 10 or more yards on 71 of his 445 career rushing attempts. He’s averaged an impressive 6.2 yards per carry with the Buckeyes. There’s a real possibility that Alvin Kamara won’t be on the team next year (between his contract status and ) so the Saints could be on the lookout for a new lead running back. That’s the vision for Kendre Miller but he needs to prove he can handle that kind of workload after injuries interrupted his rookie year. Either way, someone like Henderson could be on their radar in 2025.

Four Bulldogs players selected in USA TODAY 2025 mock draft

Multiple Georgia Bulldogs players are expected to come off the board in 2025 a way-too-early NFL mock draft

As NFL draft season has reached its conclusion, various outlets have begun publishing way to early mock drafts for next year. Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz of USA TODAY recently published an early model of what next year could look like, including four Georgia players going in round one.

First off the board for the Dawgs was quarterback Carson Beck, projected to go first overall to the New York Giants. Beck had a great season for the Dawgs a year ago and seems poised to take the next step this year en route to possibly placing himself atop a class that should also feature Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders and Texas‘ Quinn Ewers.

Next off the board are back to back picks from UGA in safety Malaki Starks at No. 14 to the Colts and edge rusher Mykel Williams at No. 15 to the Jaguars. Starks is widely seen as the best safety in the country heading into this season while Williams is seeking to have a breakout season as he transitions fully to the edge rusher role for Georgia.

The final Bulldog off the board is left tackle Earnest Greene, projected to go 25th overall to the Cleveland Browns. Greene is in his second year as a full-time starter and seeking to follow in the footsteps of Andrew Thomas and Amarius Mims in being selected in the opening round.

Two Bulldogs make freshman All-SEC team

Two Georgia Bulldogs earn All-SEC freshman honors

Georgia Bulldogs linebacker Raylen Wilson and left tackle Earnest Greene have made the All-SEC freshman team.

Wilson, a former five-star recruit, has excellent speed and helped boost the Bulldog defense after starting linebacker Jamon Dumas-Johnson suffered a broken forearm. Wilson recorded 13 tackles and 0.5 sacks.

Surprisingly, Raylen Wilson’s teammate CJ Allen did not earn the nod as a All-SEC freshman pick. Allen, a true freshman who played more snaps than Raylen Wilson, put up better numbers. He has 35 tackles and a sack entering the Orange Bowl. Texas A&M’s Taurean York and Ole Miss’ Suntarine Perkins were the other two All-SEC freshman linebackers.

Left tackle Earnest Greene played in all 13 Georgia games this season. Greene, who missed his true freshman season with injuries, impressed as a freshman and should hold down his left tackle spot for the 2024 college football season.

Georgia football will have another talented incoming group of freshmen next season. The Bulldogs have the No. 1 recruiting class in the 2024 cycle.

Watch: Georgia OL Earnest Greene obliterates Florida defender

Georgia left tackle Earnest Greene obliterated a Florida defender with devastating pancake block

Georgia Bulldogs left tackle Earnest Greene has played excellently during his first season as a starter. Greene and the Georgia offensive front are protecting quarterback Carson Beck at a very high level.

Georgia’s offensive front put together another great performance in the Dawgs’ 43-20 win over Florida. Georgia finished the Florida game with 486 yards of total offense and no turnovers. The Georgia offensive line has allowed six sacks through eight games, which is tied for sixth in the nation.

Georgia’s offensive line will face its next test on Nov. 4 at home against the Missouri Tigers. Missouri is 7-1 and is ranked 14th team in the country.

Greene showed good mobility in open space on this screen pass before delivering a pancake block to Florida Gators cornerback Jason Marshall Jr.

Now that’s the definition of a pancake block. The Georgia football team is going to have some fun when it sees that play on tape.

NFL bound Georgia OTs tab freshman Earnest Greene as next man up: ‘He’s going to be good’

“He showed all the attributes it takes to play in the SEC.”

The Georgia offensive line will have to replace both starting tackles from the 2022 national title season with Broderick Jones and Warren McClendon’s departure to the NFL.

The Bulldogs have recruited consistently well along the offensive line and one of those young lineman garnered high praise from Jones and McClendon when they spoke to the media at the NFL combine last week.

According to Jones and McClendon, freshman Earnest Greene is the next man up.

“Probably Earnest,’ Jones said. “I felt like coming in, Earnest was ready. He was very physical, heavy hands, good pass sets, good run blocker, good finisher. He showed all the attributes it takes to play in the SEC.”

Greene enrolled early in Athens in January of last year as the No. 2 interior offensive lineman, the No. 3 player in the state of California and the No. 45 prospect overall in the 2022 class, per 247Sports rankings.

I feel like he came in on a higher level than I did, just because he had the experience with his dad and trainers. Coming out of high school, I wasn’t training with a lot of people.”

Greene’s father, Earnest II, played college football at Savannah State before a nine-year career in the NFL.

Greene didn’t take a snap last season due to a hamstring injury and back injury, which required surgery. Even still, Greene did enough to impress Jones and McClendon in practice.

“You know when freshmen come in, and early enrollees at that, they have a lot to learn,” McClendon said. “But he picked up on everything quick. In his pass pro, you come in and you have to learn how to kick-slide and stuff like that. He had it down pat Day One when he first came in. Just seeing stuff like that, just little things like that, you’re like, okay, he’s going to be good.”

Georgia offensive line coach Stacy Searels spoke about Greene to 247Sports on Jan. 7.

“Really when I first got here, the kid was way ahead of his time anyway. It’s just unfortunate he did get hurt and wasn’t able to play. I think he’s got a serious mindset of wanting to be good. He’s a very talented young man that’s got tremendous feet. He’s also a strong kid that has some punch and power and will compete.”

Greene will compete for starting role with rising redshirt sophomore Micah Morris, rising redshirt junior Austin Blaske and incoming five-star tackle Monroe Freeling.

We will get to see the group in action at Georgia’s annual G-Day spring game on April 15 in Sanford Stadium.
