Robert Quinn completes the Eagles’ defense in a brilliant trade

Robert Quinn is the Eagles’ new pass-rusher after a brilliant trade. Laurie Fitzpatrick looks at how this move makes Philly’s defense even better.

With the November 1 trade deadline approaching, the Philadelphia Eagles filled one of their holes on the defensive line by picking up 12-year veteran edge rusher Robert Quinn from the Chicago Bears.

The Eagles made a similar move when they signed Chris Long before they went on their Super Bowl winning season in 2017; and most recently, the Los Angeles Rams traded for Von Miller on Nov 1st 2021, giving their line new life before they went on their Super Bowl run.

As many say, you can’t ever have enough pass rushers.

One of the best aspects of the trade is how general manager Howie Roseman made the deal without having to pay Quinn his $7.1 million remaining salary for the season. The Eagles will have solid depth in their rotation, without giving up too much capital in the process.

Let’s go to the film to see how the Eagles plan on fitting in their three-time Pro Bowl edge rusher!

Report card: Eagles top Lions, 38-35 in Week 1

The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Detroit Lions 38-35 in Week 1, and we have the grades for every position.

The Eagles successfully started the 2022 season as winners, coming away with a 38-35 road victory against the Detroit Lions in front of a sold-out crowd at Ford Field.

Philadelphia is now 10-2 in Week 1 games since the 2010 season, making the Monday night showdown against the Vikings in Week 2 even more exciting.

Jalen Hurts totaled almost 350 yards of offense on a day when he was pressured off the edge and unable to develop a rhythm within any pass catchers outside of A.J. Brown and Dallas Goedert.

On defense, the Eagles were gashed on the ground and unable to rekindle the 2021 pressure on Jared Goff, failing to sack the Lions quarterback.

With focus turning to the Vikings, here are the grades for Week 1.

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni vows to clean up a lot of things on defense

The Philadelphia Eagles were gashed on the ground by the Lions and barely escaped with a win in Detroit after a lackluster defensive effort

The Eagles entered the 2022 season opener with growing expectations, and much of the hype centered around a retooled defense and a coordinator with a rising profile in NFL coaching circles.

After Sunday’s Week 1 debacle at Detroit, the hype could cool on Jonathan Gannon, Philadelphia’s much-maligned defensive coordinator.

The Eagles have a top-10 defense on paper, but Gannon’s reluctance to unleash his weapons is now causing some concern around the franchise after the Birds surrendered 181-yards on the ground.

Philadelphia gave up 35 points and allowed 386 yards to a Lions team that was embarrassed on Halloween night by a less talented defense one year ago. During his weekly appearance on 94WIP’s Morning Show with Angelo Cataldi, Sirianni clarified that things will get cleaned up.

“We’re gonna get a lead and you’re gonna play with a lead the rest of the way.’ And that’s precisely what happened. The defense allowed us to get that lead. Now, we didn’t finish good as we all know. We’ve got to clean up a lot of things on defense, as far as the run game and some of the things like that, but we’ll get those things corrected. It’s always better to fix them after a win than after a loss.”

It is only week one, and the Eagles starters played one series together during the preseason.  Still, with the Vikings’ explosive offense heading to Philly for a Monday night showdown, adjustments must be made regarding scheme and versatility.

A team shouldn’t run the ball down your throat if you have Jordan Davis on your roster, and the Eagles must play five down linemen on apparent running formations.

Projecting the Eagles defensive depth chart for Week 1 at the Lions

Projecting the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive depth chart for Week 1 at Ford Field against the Detroit Lions

The Philadelphia Eagles have retooled a much maligned defensive unit, and now growing expectations surround a unit with top-5 potential.

The defensive line offers the most intrigue, with Brandon Graham likely sacrificing his role as a starter in Jonathan Gannon’s hybrid defensive scheme.

Haason Reddick will assume the role of a standup pass rusher opposite Josh Reddick.

At the same time, Jordan Davis will allow Fletcher Cox and Javon Hargrave to play their more natural positions.

With training camp and the preseason in the books, we’re predicting what the Eagles starting lineup, and defensive depth chart will look like in 2022.

Eagles vs. Buccaneers: Looking at the 1 stat that can help Philadelphia pull off upset

Eagles vs. Buccaneers: Looking at the 1 stat that can help Philadelphia pull off upset

Tom Brady enters Thursday’s matchup against the Eagles on fire after dropping 400+ yards and 5 touchdowns on the Miami Dolphins.

A future Hall of Famer and one of the top-5 quarterbacks in NFL history, Brady like every other guy who has ever played the position, can be rattled and made uncomfortable when put under intense pressure.

Viewers can watch Thursday Night Football with an Amazon Fire TV product.

Last Sunday against the Panthers, the Eagles defensive line logged seven quarterback hits, four tackles for loss, and three sacks, causing Sam Darnold to toss three interceptions on the afternoon.

If Philadelphia is to have any chance against Brady at home, they’ll need to get the veteran quarterback off his square with a ton of pressure and legal hits.

The Eagles are currently in the top-5 of the pass rush win rate currently.

During a 2019 matchup against Brady (a 17-10 win for New England) saw Philadelphia hold the three-time MVP to 216 passing yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions.

If the Eagles can against getting pressure on Brady without having to blitz or give up the big play, the results could be the same.
