UGA football player card: QB Nathan Priestley

Georgia Bulldogs redshirt freshman quarterback Nathan Priestley appeared in two games as a freshman.

Nathan Priestley, Quarterback (#9):

Class: Redshirt freshman

Height: 6-4

Weight: 205 pounds

Hometown: Los Angeles, California

High School: Loyola High School

Georgia Bulldogs redshirt freshman quarterback Nathan Priestley appeared in two games as a freshman. He was an unranked recruit coming into Athens. He captained his football team at Loyola High School in Los Angeles, California.

Priestley played a lot of scout team in 2019, but he did see some game action against Murray State and Arkansas State. He completed one pass for two yards against Murray State. He had a team low (among players who attempted passes) of one incomplete pass and didn’t throw any interceptions.

He was one of three UGA quarterbacks to attempt a pass in 2019. Priestley was able to redshirt since he played in under four games. He’ll compete for the back up role behind Jamie Newman in 2020 with D’Wan Mathis, Stetson Bennett, and Carson Beck.

Georgia Bulldogs quarterback D’Wan Mathis was Georgia’s co-winner of the David Jacobs Award in 2019 for overcoming his scary brain cyst. Mathis contributed as a scout team quarterback for the Bulldogs in 2019, but was never fully cleared to play until after the season.

As a freshman in 2019, Mathis enrolled early and played in the G-Day game, where he was 15-28 for 113 passing yards. Mathis committed to the University of Georgia after originally being committed to Ohio State. He was a good flip for Kirby Smart and the offensive staff.

Mathis will participate in UGA’s quarterback competition heading into the 2020 college football season. He was a four-star prospect as a recruit.

Georgia fans won’t be happy with SEC QB Rankings

The Georgia Bulldogs are moving past the Jake Fromm era. Where does Jamie Newman rank among SEC quarterbacks?

The Georgia Bulldogs are moving on beyond the Jake Fromm era in Athens. With Fromm headed to the NFL, Jamie Newman who transferred from Wake Forest, four-star quarterback Carson Beck, and D’Wan Mathis, who has been cleared to play, will all compete for the starting quarterback job.

Where does UGA’s quarterback stack up with the rest of the SEC?

Jamie Newman is predicted to win the starting job. Throughout the SEC there isn’t as clear of quarterback hierarchy heading into the 2020 season. Before the 2019 season, it was assumed that Tua Tagovailoa, Joe Burrow, and Jake Fromm were the best QBs in the SEC. Nobody saw Burrow’s Heisman season coming, but he was preseason third team All-SEC.

Here’s how SEC Mike and Shane ranked the league’s quarterbacks:

Both guys rated Florida’s Kyle Trask as the SEC’s top quarterback. Trask looked solid last season, but it is hard to envision him as the SEC’s best quarterback. I think the top-rated QB in the class of 2020, Bryce Young, will emerge at Alabama and overtake Mac Jones.

Jamie Newman comes in at fifth and ninth in the rankings. Ninth is definitely too low. Newman made honorable mention in the ACC’s all-conference team and is upgrading his team’s talent. Newman is more impressive than Auburn’s Bo Nix, who will improve in 2020, but struggle to complete passes. Newman could be anywhere from first to fourth in my eyes, with Kellen Mond, Kyle Trask and Bryce Young coming ahead of Newman.

Potential dark horses to watch: LSU’s Myles Brennan, Kentucky’s Terry Wilson, Ole Miss’s John Rhys Plumlee, and Mississippi State’s K.J. Costello. Costello will put up huge numbers under Mike Leach.

Report: UGA QB D’Wan Mathis cleared to play following brain cyst

Georgia Bulldogs quarterback D’Wan Mathis has been cleared to play following a scary brain cyst surgery.

Georgia Bulldogs Quarterback D’Wan Mathis has been cleared to play. According to UGASports, UGA head coach Kirby Smart announced the good news yesterday to an audience of alumni in Charlotte.

Mathis, a four star recruit in the class of 2019, committed to UGA over Ohio State back in 2018.  Mathis is a redshirt freshman, who was able to play in the 2019 G-Day game last season, but underwent surgery on a brain cyst last May.

Mathis is now expected to practice this spring and will battle Wake Forest transfer Jamie Newman, last season’s back-up Stetson Bennett and 2020 four-star recruit Carson Beck for the starting quarterback role. At the very least, Mathis will add depth to UGA’s QB room.

Mathis has not been totally shut down since his surgery, but hadn’t been cleared for much contact. Mathis is from Oak Park, Michigan, where he attended Oak Park High School. Mathis was able to get some valuable reps as scout team QB late last season, where he prepared the defense to face Auburn’s Bo Nix. These reps were non-contact in nature.

Could Georgia football be in the market for a transfer quarterback?

Could the Georgia Bulldogs be in the market for a transfer quarterback?

The Georgia Bulldogs are off to the Allstate Sugar Bowl, after finishing the season 11-2, with an SEC Championship Game loss to LSU.

Though junior quarterback Jake Fromm could very well return for his senior year in Athens, there’s always the possibility he leaves for the NFL and does not come back.

What would that mean for the Bulldogs? Well, Georgia currently has 2020 four-star quarterback Carson Beck committed to join the program, with 2019 four-star dual-threat Dwan Mathis sliding under the radar after surgery to remove a brain cyst this offseason. In addition, the Dawgs gained another transfer in Nevada freshman Austin Kirksey, who will walk on next year in Athens.

That’s three talented quarterbacks with little college football experience and still a lot of question marks. Say Fromm leaves and that is the quarterback room you are walking into. The Dawgs would essentially have to land a transfer off the market, which is what we’ll now discuss.

Joey Gatewood is already off the board and bound for Kentucky, so here are Georgia’s top options as of now.

  • Utah State – Jordan Love
  • Houston – D’Eriq King
  • Ole Miss- John Rhys Plumlee* (Not currently in the portal)

While Plumlee has yet to enter the portal, Georgia bringing in former Ole Miss coach Matt Luke will certainly strengthen the depth of rumors on Plumlee to Athens.

Man, would that be nice.

As of right now, Fromm has yet to declare for the NFL Draft or announce his intentions of staying in Athens, but he is being graded as a second-night draft pick by multiple highly respected analysts.

Would that be good enough for the three-time SEC East Champion, who has led the Dawgs to three-straight New Year’s Six Bowls? Time will tell.

The rumor mill will keep on going and the message boards rumbling, but Fromm is still the Bulldogs’ quarterback. Of course, things could all change as soon as tomorrow, but for now, this is where Georgia stands.

To add more traction to the possibility of gaining a transfer quarterback, Sports Illustrated’s Brooks Austin is reporting that King and Love recently followed Georgia offensive coordinator James Coley on Twitter.

Remember, nothing is confirmed at the moment, but there’s a pretty good chance the Dawgs land one of the three guys listed above if Fromm were to leave for the draft.

Georgia injury report ahead of UGA vs LSU

Georgia football’s injury report for the UGA vs LSU SEC Championship Game

The No. 4 Georgia Bulldogs limp into Atlanta this afternoon to take on the No  2 LSU Tigers in the SEC Championship game. With a few key UGA players battling injuries and others declared out for the game, the Dawgs have been relying on the medical staff this week to get everyone ready for the game.

Following is the status of several Georgia players for today’s contest with LSU.

D’ANDRE SWIFT, RB (PROBABLE)

D’Andre Swift has been battling shoulder problems for most of the season and it caught up to him during the Georgia Tech game. Dawg Nation held its collective breath as the Philadelphia junior left the game and didn’t return. Swift is Georgia’s most dangerous offensive weapon and Coach Smart believes he’ll be good to go against the Tigers.

ERIC STOKES, CORNERBACK (PROBABLE)

Stokes has been Georgia’s most consistent cornerback this season and he’ll be a key component in slowing down the LSU pass offense  After leaving the Texas A&M game with an injury, he returned for the Tech game and helped the Dawgs dominate the Jackets. The sophomore DB, who leads UGA with 8 passes broken up, is tough as nails as will be ready for Saturday.

DEVONTE WYATT, DL (QUESTIONABLE)

The junior defensive lineman has played in 11 games this season but was held out of action last week against Georgia Tech. Wyatt is second to Azeez Ojulari in quarterback hurries (14) and he’ll be counted on to disrupt the rhythm of LSU quarterback Joe Burrow and the Tiger passing game.

TOMMY BUSH, WR (PROBABLE)

The freshman speedster provides a huge target for Jake Fromm and his speed causes matchup problems.  He missed a lot of playing time with a sports hernia injury but suited up for the Texas A&M game and caught his first collegiate pass against Georgia Tech.

BEN CLEVELAND, OL (PROBABLE)

Cleveland has started the past two games but the redshirt junior is battling an ankle injury that will require post-season surgery. The 6-foot-6, 340-pound guard has played well this season and his presence will be needed against a formidable LSU front seven.

CADE MAYS, OL (PROBABLE)

The 6 foot 6, 318-pound sophomore offensive lineman, slowed by ankle and shoulder injuries this season, missed the Texas A&M game but played against Georgia Tech. Mays has started at three different positions this season and has played all five offensive positions during the year. Expect him to rotate at right guard with Ben Cleveland today.

D’WAN MATHIS, QB (OUT)

The freshman quarterback underwent surgery to remove a cyst on his brain after the G-Day game. He has participated in non-contact drills with the team throughout the season and his status for next season will be a key decision for 2020.

JUSTIN SHAFFER, OL (OUT)

The junior offensive lineman started against Tennessee and South Carolina, but after suffering a neck sprain, has missed the balance of the season.

LAWRENCE CAGER, WR (OUT)

The grad transfer wide receiver from Miami was lost for the season prior to the Tech game when he went down in practice with an ankle injury that required surgery. He is tied for the team lead in receptions with 33 and is second in receiving yards (476) and touchdowns (4).

Georgia football injury report ahead of SECCG vs LSU

Georgia Football full injury report ahead of the SEC Championship Game this Saturday December 7th @ 4:00 p.m. on CBS.

Last Saturday’s game at Georgia Tech was the largest margin of victory Georgia has ever beat the Yellow Jackets by, but it didn’t come without a price.

As if losing WR Lawrence Cager for the rest of the season to an ankle injury wasn’t bad enough, the Dawgs star RB and engine to their offensive game D’Andre Swift got placed on the injury report for the first time all season. On top of that WR George Pickens got himself suspended for the first half of the SEC Championship Game by the SEC for throwing punches.

All of this sounds like bad news for Dawgs fans, but Kirby Smart has faced a little bit of adversity in his time in Athens.  Kirby has lost his offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, top 5 receivers, a 1,000 yard rusher, a Jim Thorpe Award winner and has nearly 70% freshmen and sophomores on his team this year (youngest in all of SEC).

All of this and he still has the Bulldogs playing for a College Football Playoff for the third year in a row.  Pretty incredible if you ask me.

Here’s Georgia’s full injury report ahead of the 2019 SEC Championship Game against LSU.

Georgia football injury report ahead of UGA vs Tech game

Take a look at Georgia footballs injury status prior to UGA’s final game of their regular season before LSU at Georgia Tech.

Georgia defeated the Texas A&M Aggies this Saturday in a cold and rainy matchup by a final score of 19-13.  A win is a win, but man wouldn’t it be nice to close some teams out strong?

The Dawgs didn’t look bad in the first half, nearly covering the 13-point spread they were given prior to the game. It was the 2nd half that made Bulldog fans scratch their heads.

The Aggies outscored Georgia 10-6 in the 2nd half.  That is a pretty bad look for a No. 4 team, but give credit to a hard-fought, Jimbo Fisher coached team.

Now the Dawgs have just one more opponent left before facing LSU in the SEC Championship game, and that is Georgia Tech.

With LSU looming, the Dawgs will look to be as healthy as possible for that game.

Here is a look at the injured Bulldogs heading into week 14 at Tech.

Full injury report:

Probable: DB Eric Stokes

Stokes left the Texas A&M game just before halftime after he got a little dinged up on a hit.  Kirby Smart did not seem concerned about the matter.  Expect Stokes to be ready to go.

Probable: DB Tyson Campbell

Campbell has been playing through a toe injury for the past couple of weeks but is cleared to play against Tech.

Probable: OL Cade Mays

Mays has been nursing an ankle injury since the Missouri game.  He dressed against A&M but was very limited, as is expected next week in order to save him for LSU.

Questionable: WR Trey Blount

Blount is listed as questionable with an undisclosed injury.

Questionable: WR Lawrence Cager

Cager has been battling a left shoulder injury nearly the entire season.  Even missing a number of games, Cager is still the Dawgs leader in receptions and receiving yards.  Expect Cager to get minimal time if any to rest him up for the SEC Championship game vs LSU.

OUT: WR Tommy Bush

Bush has been recovering from a sports hernia and will likely be out for the year.

OUT: DT Tramel Walthour

Walthour is battling a lower-body injury and has no timetable for his return.

OUT: OL Owen Condon

Condon has been battling a lower-body injury all year and Saturday was seen in a sling.  Should likely be out for season.

OUT: OL Justin Shaffer

Shaffer was in a neck brace for the A&M game and has no timetable for his return.

OUT: QB D’Wan Mathis

Freshman quarterback D’wan Mathis is out indefinitely after undergoing surgery to remove a cyst from his brain this offseason.  There is no current timetable for Mathis’ return.

Georgia football injury report for UGA vs Auburn game

UGA football is banged up heading into the Georgia vs Auburn football game.

The No. 4 Georgia Bulldogs are coming off of a 27-0 smackdown of Missouri, as well as a massive win over Florida the week prior.  The Dawgs have been rolling with a three game win streak since the hiccup of South Carolina.

Approaching week 12 comes Georgia’s biggest game thus far, a chance to secure its 3rd straight trip to the SEC Championship.

Auburn is currently ranked No. 12 with a record of 7-2, 4-2 in SEC. Its two loss season is not to be overlooked as the Tigers lost close games at No. 10 Florida and No. 1 LSU.

Last weekend vs Missouri, Georgia won, but it came at cost. The Dawgs lost a few players to injuries throughout the game, but for the most part nothing looks too serious.

Here’s a look at the Dawgs injury report prior to the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry.

Full injury report:

Probable: WR Lawrence Cager

Cager aggravated his shoulder last game and did not return.  The Dawgs leading receiver has been practicing this week and is expected to play on Saturday.  Having Cager against Auburn will be crucial, as he has become Fromm’s favorite target this season.

Probable: WR Tyler Simmons

Simmons’ shoulder has been bothering for a majority of the season but he should be good to go.

Probable: OL Cade Mays

Mays left the Missouri game with a hurt ankle but has indicated that he is fine.

Probable: CB Tyson Campbell

Campbell missed a significant chunk of the season with turf toe but played vs Missouri and said he felt great out there.
