Caleb Williams and the sizzle vs. the steak

USC Caleb Williams and the sizzle vs. the steak with his NFL potential and draft stock

Many years ago, I worked in the automotive industry for a boss who gave an excellent presentation on the concept of “sizzle vs. steak.” It was related to the idea of backing up the initial “sizzle” of a product and the first impression with the “steak” of the long-term quality and sustenance of the product. My boss stressed the notion of ignoring the sizzle and focusing on the quality of the meat once the sizzle fades.

It’s a concept that has direct application to USC quarterback Caleb Williams as an NFL draft prospect. There is no prospect with more sizzle than Williams, the reigning Heisman winner and presumptive top draft pick entering the college season. The charismatic Trojans QB appears in national advertising while also playing an exciting style of football.

The steak, however, is an area where Williams isn’t quite as tasty as a prospect. The sizzle of the gaudy numbers and exciting plays gets gristly when watching Williams attempt to operate in the structure of more typical NFL offenses.

Simply put: Williams does not “win” from the pocket nearly as well or as consistently as hoped. When plays break down, or when he moves around creatively, Williams is spectacularly sizzling. It harkens back to the thrill ride that was Johnny Manziel at Texas A&M or Baker Mayfield at Oklahoma. But Williams has some of the negatives of the games of those two former celebrity QBs entering the NFL, too.

Williams doesn’t have consistent throwing mechanics or platforms. He frequently drifts off his mark on dropbacks, artificially and unnecessarily changing the throwing lane and intricacies of route timing. Williams often creates the chaos he thrives in with undisciplined quarterback play.

Based on the track record of head coach Lincoln Riley’s career, that could very well be by design. Mayfield and Kyler Murray were both guilty of those issues while playing under Riley in college. It’s very difficult for college defenses to control. The sizzle works in college in part because collegiate defenses don’t have enough knives to cut into the meat.

As Murray and (especially) Mayfield have shown at the pro level, doing that in the NFL is a lot tougher, like an IHOP breakfast steak. Those former No. 1 overall picks have shown they can develop some tastier mechanics and beefier performances in more timing-based and anticipatory structures in the NFL, but that progress is nonlinear and scattershot.

Some NFL teams won’t worry so much about that. They might even covet the sizzle, thinking they have the coaching and the culture to make Williams’ nontraditional NFL style work. Mayfield’s sharp early success in Cleveland is proof it can happen. Michael Vick’s heyday in Atlanta nicely blended the sizzle with enough steak to make a Super Bowl appearance.

Williams has every chance to be as successful — or even more successful — than those predecessors. However, not every NFL team will want that volatility or the dedication to playing that specific style. It’s hard on offensive linemen when the QB holds the ball too long or runs out of a clean pocket, as Williams often does. There’s a reason the lines blocking for Russell Wilson perennially rank near the top in penalties, as an example. Those are issues some coaches, some franchises, just won’t want.

It only takes one, of course. The sizzle Williams offers will be incredibly appealing to many franchises, which is why the current talk of him falling out of the top-5 picks seems absurd. He might very well be the third or even fourth QB on some teams’ (and analysts’) draft boards come April, but there’s enough prime meat on the bone for him to be some teams’ choice at, or very near, the top.

Texas RB Bijan Robinson’s NFL draft stock is rising

The Chargers and Bills remain potential suitors for Bijan Robinson.

Bijan Robinson is rated as one of the top prospects in the 2023 NFL Draft. Many experts have the former Longhorn as one of their top 10 overall prospects.

Unfortunately for Robinson, the running back position has lost a bit of value over the years. It is a rare occurrence to see teams use a high draft pick on a running back in todays NFL.

Robinson may just be good enough to break that trend with running backs shuffling around all over the league this week in free agency. Bleacher Report believes Robinson’s draft stock is rising as the Bills and several other teams are still in need of a starting ball carrier.

The good news for the Texas product is that a new team, the Los Angeles Chargers, might be looking for a lead back.

At the beginning of free agency, Chargers running back Austin Ekeler asked for a trade, and the team permitted him to seek one. While nothing further has happened, Ekeler’s departure would leave the offense with a significant hole. Also, it doesn’t hurt that the running back-needy Bills haven’t signed a rusher in free agency, which should comfortably place the Longhorn as a rare first-round back.

Saints schedule Top 30 pre-draft visit with UAB running back DeWayne McBride

The Saints have scheduled a Top 30 pre-draft visit with UAB running back DeWayne McBride, a mid-round prospect in the 2023 NFL draft:

The New Orleans Saints just added a veteran running back in free agent Jamaal Williams, but they’re not finished improving depth behind Alvin Kamara just yet. Per Matt Zenitz of On3.com, the Saints are one of several teams scheduled to host UAB running back DeWayne McBride.

McBride is projected to be picked in the third or fourth round of the 2023 NFL draft, having averaged a blistering 7.2 yards per carry with 36 career touchdown runs. McBride has solid size by NFL standards at 5-foot-10 and 209 pounds, but he needs to show teams he can be a factor on passing downs. He’s only caught 5 receptions in his college career and logged just 130 snaps in pass protection.

New Orleans has a strong tandem in Kamara and Williams, but depth behind them leaves something to be desired — backups Eno Benjamin and Derrick Gore are returning for 2023, and that’s it. If Kamara is suspended for six or more games, as is expected, Williams could use some help shouldering the load. Adding a prospect like McBride in the middling rounds would make a lot of sense.

2023 NFL Draft Stock: Where Bryce Young currently stands

See where analysts project Bryce Young to begin his NFL career in 2023!

Rising junior quarterback for the Crimson Tide, [autotag]Bryce Young[/autotag] is fresh off of an impressive 2021 season, his first as the team’s starting quarterback. Though there is still quite some time before the 2022 season kickoff, Young is believed to be one of the top overall prospects for the 2023 NFL draft.

Young is currently a presumed top-10 selection in 2023, but plenty can change until then. Ohio State‘s C.J. Stroud is expected to be the first player and quarterback off the board, followed shortly thereafter by Young.

The Crimson Tide offense has been completely revamped heading into 2022. A handful of transfer has transformed the wide receiver room and made for a new starting running back. All of whom could be first-round selections themselves this time next year.

Way-too-early NFL mock drafts for 2023 are plentiful now. So, let’s see where Young is currently expected to land.

DRAFT STOCK: LaBryan Ray could move up draft boards with a strong combine performance

This former Alabama defensive lineman can continue to rise up the draft boards with a strong performance at the NFL combine

One of the most intriguing prospects heading into the 2022 NFL draft is former Alabama defensive lineman LaBryan Ray. And it has very little to do with the fact that Ray played in Tuscaloosa. It has more to do with the fact that Ray never lived up to his five-star billing out of high school due to several injuries throughout his collegiate career.

In most mock drafts, Ray is going as either a late-round selection or undrafted free agent. Recently, our friends over at Eagles Wire put out their 2022 NFL team mock draft and they have the Eagles selecting Ray with one of their fifth-round selections.

Ray is a prospect whose best football could be ahead of him if he can stay healthy.

The former Alabama standout will be participating in the NFL combine later this week and could improve his draft stock with a strong showing.

DRAFT STOCK: WR John Metchie III moves into first-round conversation

John Metchie quietly rising up draft boards!

Former Alabama wide receiver John Metchie III entered the 2021 season as the most experienced member of the wide receiving corps for the Crimson Tide. As the season progressed, Metchie shared the WR1 spotlight with first-year transfer from Ohio State, Jameson Williams.

Metchie’s season was cut short after he tore his ACL in the SEC Championship game win over the Georgia Bulldogs.

When the 2021 season concluded, many fans and analysts wondered whether Metchie would decide to return for one final season. He did not. Metchie declared for the 2022 NFL draft and chose to leave the final year of eligibility on the table.

A torn ACL late in the season originally seemed to hinder Metchie’s draft stock, but it has seemingly reversed course just a month into the offseason.

Luke Easterling of The Draft Wire predicts Metchie will be drafted No. 49 overall by the New Orleans Saints.

Metchie’s spot at No. 49 overall is close to the first round, but not quite there yet. Other mock drafts have begun moving the former Alabama wide receiver into the first round.

Zack Patraw of Sports Illustrated and Mike Mulhern of NBC Sports Philadelphia both have Metchie being drafted at No. 32 overall.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow mock drafts and projections pertaining to former Alabama players entering the 2022 NFL draft.

DRAFT STOCK: Former Alabama DL Phidarian Mathis trending upward

When is Phidarian Mathis expected to be drafted? The latest from recent projections.

Former Alabama defensive lineman Phidarian Mathis was a key contributor on the field for the Crimson Tide in 2021. His experience and ability to act as a leader made him a valuable teacher and mentor for the young players on the line.

Mathis had his best season in 2021, accumulating 53 total tackles nine sacks, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and two blocked passes.

According to NFLMockDraft Database, Mathis was originally projected to be drafted on day three of the 2022 NFL draft, but it now appears that he’s expected to be a mid-second round selection at the earliest, and an early third round pick at the latest.

With a few months to go before the draft, things will certainly change, whether it be for better or for worse.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Mathis’ draft position as the 2022 NFL draft gets closer.

DRAFT STOCK WATCH: Alabama OT Evan Neal is a lock for top-10 overall

Evan Neal is a lock for top-10, but some have him inside the top-3!

Alabama Football has players drafted every year, especially in the first round. What makes the Crimson Tide stand above the rest is that all positions are drafted early. Whether it be quarterbacks, wide receivers, defensive backs or linemen, they are all options to be selected in the first round.

In this ‘Draft Stock Watch,’ Alabama offensive tackle Evan Neal isn’t on the rise, since he’s been projected early first round for quite some time, but it is time to stamp the label of “lock” on him being top-10 overall.

In mock drafts from various publications and outlets, Neal is not just top-10, but in most cases top-five and sometimes in the top-three.

According to ‘NFLMockDraft Database,’ which collects data from all mock draft published by major outlets, Neal currently sits as the consensus No. 3 overall pick.

Here’s where he lands in recent mock drafts:

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow along with trends for the 2022 NFL Draft and how it will impact Alabama’s draft-eligible players.

2022 DRAFT STOCK: Alabama WR Jameson Willams to the moon in latest mocks

Jameson Williams is fixing to be ANOTHER first-round WR to come out of Alabama, see where he is projected to go!

Alabama wide receiver Jameson Williams may only be in his first season with the Crimson Tide, but has become a fan favorite and one of the most important pieces to this team’s success.

The former Ohio State Buckeye spent two season in Columbus, Ohio before making his way down to Tuscaloosa. In his first two seasons, Williams caught a total of 14 passes for 266 yards and three touchdowns.

Through 13 games with the Crimson Tide, Williams has tallied 68 receptions for 1,445 yards and 15 touchdowns. Stellar numbers.

Williams is only a junior, so he could return for an additional year of Alabama Football, but with the way his draft stock is trending, why would he?

To start the 2021 season, Williams was considered a mid-round wide receiver, potentially being drafted late on night No. 2 or even on the third day. However, that has all changed drastically. Now, Williams is expected to be an early first-round pick, and potentially the first receiver off the board.

Here’s where he stands in recent major mock drafts:

Pro Football Focus: 11 overall, New Orleans Saints

The Draft Network: 15 overall, Cleveland Browns

CBS Sports: 18 overall, Las Vegas Raiders

DraftWire: 25 overall, Dallas Cowboys

Sports Illustrated: 22 overall, Los Angeles Chargers

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow along as Jameson Williams completes the remainder of his junior season with the Crimson Tide.

2022 NFL Draft Stock: Alabama WR John Metchie III on the rise

Where does the Alabama WR currently stand in mock drafts?

Alabama wide receiver John Metchie III is currently in his junior season, which makes him eligible to declare for the 2022 NFL draft. The star wide receiver was once the young, fresh face in a wide receiver corps that consisted of four first-round pass-catchers.

Now, Metchie plays alongside first-year transfer from Ohio State, Jameson Williams, who has been stellar for the Crimson Tide.

Through 10 games, Metchie has put up impressive numbers, comparable with just about any WR1 in college football. He’s tallied 67 receptions for 722 yards and scored six touchdowns.

Metchie entered the 2021 college football season as an expected first-round pick, but a slow start to the season dropped him down to the second round. Now, he is making a comeback and mock drafts are moving him up the boards.

He’s where he is projected to land in recent mock drafts:

NFL Spin Zone24, Las Vegas Raiders

With the First Pick: 28, Detroit Lions

Elite Sports NY: 28, Green Bay Packers

Pro Football Network: 30, Detroit Lions

Sporting News: 28, Green Bay Packers

Pro Football Focus: 30, Green Bay Packers

NBC Sports Chicago: 19, Tennessee Titans

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Metchie’s draft stock as the 2021 college football season begins to wind down.
