Damone Clark’s NFL draft stock is on the rise

Damone Clark is on the rise and for good reason.

With just four games remaining in the regular season for the LSU Tigers, we look ahead towards the offseason. More importantly, which players could we see get the call to the NFL during the draft.

The top name on the list will absolutely be Derek Stingley Jr, despite the inconsistency on the field and the number of injuries. He has tremendous upside and is viewed as the No.1 cornerback in the draft.

Per Mel Kiper on ESPN (subscription required)

I wrote a little about Stingley and his ceiling last month, and he’s the top corner in this class even though he hasn’t been consistently great since 2019 (and now is dealing with a foot injury that has kept him out for more than a month). This ranking is all about his upside. His freshman film, when he was one of the best players on LSU’s national title team, is tremendous. He didn’t play as well last season, but that can mostly be attributed to the entire LSU defense being dreadful. He has shown that he can lock down SEC receivers. There are going to be questions about his up-and-down play, but NFL teams will see more good tape than bad and draft him based on his ceiling.

One name that is starting to catch some buzz at this point in the season is linebacker Damone Clark.

Clark currently leads the nation in tackles and could set a record at LSU for the most tackles in a single season. Next year we could see Clark added to the list of LSU linebackers in the NFL. A list that already includes Devin White and Deion Jones, among others.

Clark is ranked as the No. 5 inside linebacker according to Kiper. Devin Lloyd (Utah), Nakobe Dean (Georgia), Christian Harris (Alabama), and Jack Campbell (Iowa) are ahead of him.

LSU Tigers on Kiper’s rankings:

  • Derek Stingley Jr: No. 1 Cornerback
  • Damone Clark: No. 5 Inside Linebacker
  • Ed Ingram: No. 10 Offensive Guard
  • Ali Gaye: No. 10A Edge
  • Cade York: No. 1 Kicker

Which Michigan State alum could hear their names called during day two of the NFL Draft

There are a handful of MSU alums that could hear their names called in rounds two or three

Does the streak grow to 80 years on Friday night?

To no surprise, no Michigan State players were selected in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. While a day one pick in this bunch was always unlikely, there’s a shot for a few MSU alums to get selected during day two. Which Spartans have a shot at being the one to extend MSU’s streak of having at least one player selected in the NFL Draft to 80 straight years? Well, there are a few candidates out of the 14 draft eligible prospects.

Where will Devonta Smith be drafted in the 2020 NFL Draft?

Many who watch Alabama football casually know about Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs, who will most likely be first-round picks in the 2020 NFL Draft.

However, fellow Junior wide receiver, Devonta Smith, has thrown his name into the hat to be a potential late first-round pick in the upcoming draft.

Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports has Smith listed as one of his top receivers to watch leading up to the draft.

“He’s a spindly athlete but has refined ability to beat press at the line, is smooth building speed down the field and has impeccable ball-tracking skills,” says Trapasso.

After spending his Sophomore season being known as the freshman that caught the game-winning touchdown pass on “second and twenty-six,” Smith has made his presence known in this crowded Alabama receiving corps.

With only a few games left in the 2019 college football regular season, Smith has amassed a solid amount of stats.

Off of 56 receptions, Smith has 1,026 yards, 11 touchdowns and averages just over 18 yards per catch.

These are very solid numbers for any receiver in college football, but because he has to share time with 2018’s Biletnikoff winner, Jeudy, and known speedster, Ruggs, he may be overlooked.

There’s no telling exactly where he will end up, but if the right team gets him they will be able to unleash his full potential and see what he can really do once given the opportunity to be “the receiver” on a given team.

Teams will have to do a little digging on this Alabama offense in order or unearth a potential gold mine in Smith. Once that happens, he may just be taken in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
