The Seattle Seahawks have finally added to a position of need, acquiring a little help for the defensive side of the ball. Seattle has traded with the Cincinnati Bengals to acquire defensive end, Carlos Dunlap and some much-needed pass rush assistance.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Seahawks are sending linebacker B.J. Finney and a seventh-round pick to the Bengals in exchange. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport first reported the trade. Multiple media outlets are now confirming the move.

Dunlap was originally selected by the Bengals in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft out of the University of Florida. He has spent all 11 years of his career in Cincinnati.

This story is continuing to develop.

Ty Johnson claimed by the New York Jets off of waivers

The New York Jets have claimed former Detroit Lions running back Ty Johnson off of waivers.

The New York Jets have claimed former Detroit Lions running back Ty Johnson off of waivers. Johnson was released yesterday in a corresponding move after the Lions activated safety Jayron Kearse from suspension.

This is the second running back selected on Day 3 of the NFL draft that has been claimed off of waivers after the Lions released them this season — the other being Jason Huntley, who was claimed by the Philadelphia Eagles at cut-downs last month.

In 2019, the Lions running backs were banged up and Johnson earned time late in the season, rushing the ball 63 times for 273 yards, and notching 24 receptions for 109-yards on the year.

In 2020, Johnson made the Lions initial 53-man roster out of training camp and looked like he was in a competition for the Lions third running back role with Bo Scarbrough. When Scarbrough was injured, Johnson had the inside edge for less than 24 hours before the team added Adrian Peterson to the roster.

Johnson was relegated to a fourth running back role and was only on the field for five offensive snaps this season, receiving no touches or targets. He did play 24 snaps on special teams in Weeks 1 and 2 but was a healthy scratch in Week 3.

With the Lions’ Peterson, Kerryon Johnson, and D’Andre Swift firmly ahead of Ty Johnson on the depth chart, and Scarbrough eligible to return from injured reserve, the Lions felt comfortable risking him to waivers.

Sean Payton updates the training camp battle between Cesar Ruiz, Erik McCoy

The New Orleans Saints are trying out top draft pick Cesar Ruiz at both center and right guard in training camp, along with Erik McCoy.

[jwplayer 28S7U2VW-ThvAeFxT]

The biggest battle of New Orleans Saints training camp is happening in the trenches. Cesar Ruiz, the team’s top draft pick, is hoping to win the starting job and stay at his natural position at center. But he’ll have to unseat the incumbent starter, Erik McCoy, who put up very good game tape during his 2019 rookie season.

For now, Saints coach Sean Payton is just focused on getting them used to working together. Whoever doesn’t remain at center will shift over to the right guard spot, replacing three-time Pro Bowl alternate Larry Warford. And while it’s too early to call the competition after the first day of practice in pads, Payton has been encouraged by where things started.

He spoke about the training camp competition in his Monday conference call after practice: “We’re evaluating both of them, they’re both getting plenty of work. McCoy’s getting work at center, Ruiz is at right guard. And probably every second or third day we’ll evaluate and flip them around. We’re rotating both of those guys with Nick Easton inside. We feel like, obviously, all of those reps are important and I think overall (Ruiz is) a pretty quick study.”

It shouldn’t panic anyone that Ruiz isn’t taking every snap at center right away. The Saints often train players at different positions (defensive back P.J. Williams had a great day of practice at safety), and there’s a good chance Ruiz ends up playing at guard rather than center for much of his rookie year. It’s best for him to get some familiarity with it now.

For the curious: Ruiz started 26 of 31 games at center with Michigan, spending the remaining 5 starts at right guard. At Texas A&M, Erik McCoy logged 37 starts at center and 2 at guard. That won’t factor much into who starts where in 2020 with the Saints, but it does give some context on where each player’s background lies.

Also, Easton has also been filling in for left guard Andrus Peat. While early reports out of Saints training camp were positive for Peat, he wasn’t in attendance at Monday’s practice session, and Payton offered no explanation. It’s unknown whether Peat is dealing with an injury, personal matter, or the NFL’s COVID-19 protocol, but we’ll keep you posted.

In the meantime, this is what Easton is here for. It’s good to see that he’s also part of the training camp battle to start along the interior, justifying the big contract the Saints signed him to last summer. While Ruiz should be a favorite to get the starting nod, having a vested veteran like Easton involved will make sure the rookie earns his opportunity.

Packers sign fifth-round pick Kamal Martin

The Packers signed their seventh draft pick on Thursday, agreeing to a rookie deal with LB Kamal Martin.

The Green Bay Packers have signed the seventh of their nine draft picks.

The team announced the signing of fifth-round pick Kamal Martin, a linebacker from Minnesota, on Thursday.

Martin joins quarterback Jordan Love, running back A.J. Dillon, offensive lineman Jon Runyan, offensive lineman Simon Stepaniak, safety Vernon Scott and outside linebacker Jonathan Garvin as the team’s seven signed draft picks. Tight end Josiah Deguara and center Jake Hanson remain unsigned.

The Packers made Martin the 175th overall pick in the 2020 draft. An All-Big Ten pick in 2019, Martin produced 177 total tackles, 13 tackles for losses, 3.5 sacks, nine pass breakups and four forced fumbles during his collegiate career with the Golden Gophers.

According to Over the Cap, Martin’s four-year deal will be worth roughly $3.57 million, with a signing bonus of just over $270,000 and a 2020 cap hit of just under $680,000.

Martin posted a photo of himself signing his first NFL contract on Instagram:

Martin will compete with several other young inside linebackers for snaps alongside Christian Kirksey at the position in 2020.

ESPN suggests best landing spots for Saints free agents Larry Warford, Eli Apple

The New Orleans Saints do not have many free agents left from the 2020 class, but ESPN has suggestions for Larry Warford and Eli Apple.

[jwplayer 1FVq3fON-ThvAeFxT]

The big waves of NFL free agency have come and gone, and the New Orleans Saints are left with a whittled-down list of players who haven’t signed a new contract just yet. The most notable names in that group would be Pro Bowl guard Larry Warford and former first-round draft pick Eli Apple, who the Saints acquired in a trade back in 2018.

Because this year’s compensatory draft pick cutoff passed by, the Saints will not recoup any future picks once Warford and Apple sign with new teams. But where will they end up playing in 2020?

ESPN writer Matt Bowen suggested the Chicago Bears (a team that quickly expressed interest in the guard) as a match for Warford, while his peers Jeremy Fowler (Detroit Lions) and Field Yates (Cleveland Browns) approached from different angles. Bowen wrote:

Chicago signed veteran guard Germain Ifedi to a one-year deal this offseason. Adding Warford, however, would bolster the interior of the offensive line and the run game.

ESPN’s three writers were also in disagreement as to where Apple should sign, with Bowen picking the Tennessee Titans whereas Fowler went with the New York Jets, and Yates suggesting the Houston Texans. Yates wrote of a possible Apple-Texans matchup:

The Texans have been willing to take fliers on players while banking on a change of scenery going a long way. Apple would be the latest first-rounder to join the cornerback group, along with Gareon Conley and Vernon Hargreaves III.

Wherever Apple and Warford play their next football game, it doesn’t appear they’ll do so in New Orleans — or if they do, they’ll be wearing opposing colors.
