Detroit Lions officially sign former Alabama RB Jahmyr Gibbs

See the details of Jahmyr Gibbs’ rookie contract with the Detroit Lions.

Former Alabama running back, Jahmyr Gibbs, has put the pen to paper and is officially a member of the Detroit Lions after signing his rookie contract. The Lions used the No. 12 overall selection in the first round of the 2023 NFL D]draft on Gibbs and he will be a feature player in their offense from the first game. Gibbs’s selection came a year after the Lions had selected another former transfer portal player turned Alabama superstar with a first-round pick in Jameson Williams.

Now, Gibbs will officially be a Lion for the next four years. It’s the same for all first-round picks, but the Lions will also have a fifth-year team option in the contract. According to the Detroit Free Press, Gibbs’s four-year deal is worth $17.845 million with $9.978 million of it being guaranteed. Gibbs and Will Anderson Jr. have both now signed their rookie deal, Bryce Young and the Panthers is the last contact Tide fans are waiting on.

In his lone season with the Tide, Gibbs started all 12 games he appeared in and had 151 carries for 926 yards and seven touchdowns. However, he was an even bigger asset in the receiving game as he led the Tide in receptions with 44 that went for 444 yards and three scores.

The Patriots have officially signed their rookie third-round draft pick

On a day when there were multiple releases, the New England Patriots also signed rookie third-round draft pick Marte Mapu.

The team officially announced the news on Monday but didn’t reveal the exact contract details.

Mapu was a bit more of an unknown prospect on the draft board, but those that have seen him on tape have been blown away by his potential. He even impressed Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin at the Senior Bowl.

“I was standing on the field with (Steelers coach) Mike Tomlin during one of the 9-on-7 periods, and I’ve posted this clip online, Mapu came down and just buckled this fullback behind the line of scrimmage,” Senior Bowl executive director Jim Nagy told the Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan, via the Hartford Courant. “And Mike looks at me with wide eyes, and we look at each other like that, holy (expletive) look. And he was like, ‘This boy’s making some money right now.’ So he definitely stood out.”

Mapu has continued to stand out for the Patriots as a rookie on the practice field, working at both the linebacker and safety positions on defense. He presents a rare blend of power and speed that should give an already elite New England defense even more firepower.

With Mapu’s deal finally wrapped up, the only rookies left for the Patriots to sign is first-round pick Christian Gonzalez and second-rounder Keion White.

Bears RB Roschon Johnson signs rookie contract

The Bears signed another one of their draft picks, agreeing to a four-year deal with running back Roschon Johnson.

Another Chicago Bears 2023 draft pick is under contract. The Bears announced on Monday that running back Roschon Johnson signed a four-year deal. Johnson is the latest rookie from the team’s 2023 draft class to get a deal done.

Johnson was selected by the Bears with pick No. 115 in the fourth round out of the University of Texas where he spelled star running back Bijan Robinson. Though he was the team’s backup, Johnson shined on his own, rushing for 554 yards and five touchdowns on just 93 carries during his final season in 2022. His 6.0 yards per carry were on par with Robinson’s, who averaged 6.1.

Now with the Bears, Johnson will compete with veterans Khalil Herbert and D’Onta Foreman for touches. Though he’ll have to earn playing time, the praise for Johnson has been loud from current scouts and former coaches. He figures to see significant snaps sooner rather than later.

With Johnson now under contract, the Bears have signed eight of their 10 draft picks. Only second-round selections defensive tackle Gervon Dexter Sr. and cornerback Tyrique Stevenson remained unsigned.

Colts sign WR Josh Downs to rookie contract

Josh Downs is officially under contract.

The Indianapolis Colts signed wide receiver Josh Downs to his rookie contract, the team announced Tuesday.

Downs, who was selected in the third round, is the first of the team’s Day 1 or Day 2 picks to sign his four-year rookie deal. It is worth roughly $5.59 million and includes a $1.1 million signing bonus.

Downs figures to compete immediately for a starting role in the wide receiver room, working mostly out of the slot. He’s a crafty route runner and quick separator from the slot while boasting some of the most reliable hands in the class.

Over the last two seasons at North Carolina, Downs was one of the most productive receivers in the nation. In 2021, he had a breakout as a true sophomore, which included 101 receptions for 1,335 yards and eight touchdowns.

He followed that up with another productive campaign in 2022, recording 94 receptions for 1,029 yards and 11 touchdowns.

With Downs under contract, the Colts have now signed eight of their 12 draft picks to rookie deals. They are still waiting on quarterback Anthony Richardson, second-round cornerback Julius Brents, fourth-round offensive tackle Blake Freeland and fourth-round defensive tackle Adetomiwa Adebawore.

Chargers WR Quentin Johnston talks about giving his mother the gift of retirement

Quentin Johnston set aside a portion of his rookie contract to help his mother retire, making good on a draft night promise.

When Quentin Johnston was selected by the Chargers in the first round of April’s draft, his first thought wasn’t about a new car or house that he might be able to buy with his rookie contract, but rather the prospect that his mother might be able to retire with his help.

He told his mother on draft night that she could stop working and retire, and after officially inking his rookie deal last Friday, he seems set to follow through on that commitment.

In speaking to the media after practice at rookie minicamp, he talked about what it means to him to be able to make such a monumental change in the lives of his family.

It means the world to me. I’m a big family person. Obviously, growing up, I wouldn’t be in this position I am today if it wasn’t for both of my parents and the sacrifices that they made, getting me to and from different games, different practices, different events when they had stuff planned already. I would’ve done the same thing for my dad, but my dad was already retired, so I just gave him a pat on the back right there. To give back to them and see the look on their faces, it’s everything.

Clearly, Johnston is motivated by far more than money in his first year with the Chargers, and if his comments are any indication, he is well on his way to paying back all of the help that got him into the NFL.

All Cowboys draft picks officially signed; contract details

From @ToddBrock24f7: The Cowboys inked 8 draft picks to contracts just before the start of rookie minicamp; Mazi Smith leads the class with a $13.27M deal.

Along with Thursday’s news that tight end Luke Schoonmaker and cornerback Eric Scott Jr. had formally signed their rookie deals came an expressed goal from the front office: to have all eight of this year’s draft picks under contract before the end of the weekend.

They gave themselves four days. It took one.

Every member of the Cowboys’ 2023 draft class officially put pen to paper on Thursday, just in time for the first day of rookie minicamp on Friday.

Here’s a dollars-and-cents breakdown on the contract given to each of this year’s picks, according to Spotrac.

Cowboys’ 6th-round draft pick CB Eric Scott Jr. signs rookie contract

From @ToddBrock24f7: The Southern Miss cornerback is the second draft pick to sign his deal; the team hopes to have all 8 of their selections signed by Monday.

It’s a busy day at The Star in Frisco, with the Cowboys front office looking to get as much football business done as they can before the 58th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards show takes over the Ford Center on Thursday evening.

To that end, the team has signed sixth-round draft pick Eric Scott Jr. to his rookie contract. The Southern Miss cornerback was the second draft pick to put pen to paper on their deal Thursday; second-round tight end Luke Schoonmaker made it official earlier in the day.

Early reports put Scott’s four-year deal at $4 million, with ESPN’s Todd Archer adding that he received a signing bonus of $218,308.

The Cowboys expect to stay busy over the next few days; David Moore of the Dallas Morning News tweeted that the club hopes to have all eight of this year’s draft picks signed before the weekend is over.

The Cowboys’ rookie minicamp will be held Friday through Monday, with OTAs set to begin May 22.

For Scott, his signature on an actual NFL contract signals the start of the next chapter of an unlikely story that involved the 24-year-old hiring a videographer to record Scott working out on his high school field, posting the video to YouTube, and then sending it to the Cowboys coaching staff in an effort to get himself noticed prior to draft weekend.

Here is a look at the projected rookie contracts for the Houston Texans’ 2023 draft class.

The Houston Texans went all-in during the 2023 NFL draft, and have laid the foundation for a successful future with their newest crop of talent.

Between C.J. Stroud and Will Anderson alone, the team seems to have found two cornerstone players to buoy both sides of the ball next season and for years to come.

But just how much will these fresh faces cost the team over the course of the next several years? Take a look below to get an idea of just how much the Texans’ 2023 draft class will be paid on their rookie contracts. All figures are from Spotrac.

Josh Paschal signs his rookie contract with the Lions

Second-round defensive lineman Josh Paschal signs his rookie contract with the Lions

The entire Detroit Lions draft class of 2022 is now under contract. The Lions signed second-round pick Josh Paschal on Friday, the team announced.

Paschal was the last player left to sign. The defensive lineman from Kentucky is now locked in for the next four years. Terms were not immediately disclosed, but the CBA largely negates any bargaining. It is expected the deal is worth $8.4 million with a $3.3 million signing bonus per the league’s rookie salary slotting structure.

Paschal, the No. 46 overall pick, did not participate in the recent minicamp or this week’s OTAs. Head coach Dan Campbell indicated Paschal is still recovering from a “lower extremity” injury that is related to the leg injury that he suffered for the Wildcats in December.
