Report: Nets trade Spencer Dinwiddie to Raptors for Dennis Schroder; Thaddeus Young

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported on Friday that the Brooklyn Nets were trading Spencer Dinwiddie to the Toronto Raptors for two players.

The Brooklyn Nets were one of the teams expected to be active with the 2023-24 NBA trade deadline on Thursday at 3 PM ET approaching quickly. It took Brooklyn some time to get into the mix, but it looks like they were able to trade away someone who was not expected to have a market.

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported on Thursday that the Nets are trading guard Spencer Dinwiddie to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for guard Dennis Schroder. Shortly after his initial report, Wojnarowski added that forward Thaddeus Young was being sent to Brooklyn along with Schroder.

This trade ends Dinwiddie’s second stint with the Nets franchise that saw him grow from a fringe NBA player to someone who showed that he was a starting point guard in the league as well as someone who could fit on any team due to his versatility. This season proved to be a trying one for Dinwiddie as he looked disengaged at times on the court due to how much his role was changing because of the Nets prioritizing the growth of Mikal Bridges and Cam Thomas.

In the end, Dinwiddie gets to presumably be the starting point guard for a Raptors team looking to find a direction for its franchise soon. In exchange, the Nets get a player in Schroder who can step in as a ball-handler/scorer, filling a need for Brooklyn whether Ben Simmons is healthy or not.

Young has been reduced to a bench player who has averaged no more than 18.3 minutes per game during his time in Toronto as the organization has focused its efforts to be around budding star forward Scottie Barnes. It remains to be seen what Young’s role with the Nets will be, but most likely, he will be coming off the bench for Brooklyn and could possibly not play in some games as well.

Four Boston Celtics alumni on the move on the NBA’s 2024 trade deadline

There has not been much action on trade deadline day for the Boston Celtics after having dealt for Memphis Grizzlies big man Xavier Tillman, Sr. the day before, but four former Celtics are on the move.

There has not been much action on trade deadline day for the Boston Celtics after having dealt for Memphis Grizzlies big man Xavier Tillman, Sr. the day before, but four former Celtics are on the move. One of the four, former Celtics center Kelly Olynyk, has been traded from the Utah Jazz with “guard Ochai Agbaji to the Toronto Raptors for Kira Lewis, Otto Porter and a 2024 first-round pick,” according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The other, former Boston forward Gordon Hayward, has been dealt from the Charlotte Hornets to the Oklahoma City Thunder for guard Tre Mann and forward Davis Bertans, wing Vasilije Micic and draft compensation, also reported by Wojnarowski.

The third is onetime Celtics floor general Dennis Schroder, who is being flipped with Thad Young by the Toronto Raptors for Spencer Dinwiddie, again per Woj.

Finally, The Athletic’s Shams Charania reports that former Boston wing Evan Fournier is part of a package including Quentin Grimes, Malachi Flynn and two second round picks that the New York Knicks are sending to the Detroit Pistons for Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks.

Lakers have interest in trading for two of their former players

The Lakers may want to bring back two familiar men in order to bolster their depth.

After 45 games and just 22 wins this season, the Los Angeles Lakers are aggressively scouring the trade market to secure at least one upgrade. Their biggest trade target, according to reports, is Atlanta Hawks star guard Dejounte Murray, but there are a number of other players they’re also interested in.

While they would love to upgrade from D’Angelo Russell, who has been on a tear lately after slumping for most of December, they have a couple of other needs. They would like another legitimate facilitating guard, ideally one with foot speed, which has resulted in some interest in Collin Sexton of the Utah Jazz and Tyus Jones of the Washington Wizards.

According to ESPN, L.A. is also interested in Dennis Schroder, who played for it last season, as well as during the 2020-21 campaign.

Via ESPN:

“The Toronto Raptors have two players on their roster the Lakers have interest in as well, sources said: Dennis Schroder and Bruce Brown,” wrote Dave McMenamin. “Schroder was L.A.’s backup point guard last season before signing with Toronto for the full midlevel exception in the summer.”

Schroder gave the team some very valuable minutes last season, especially when Russell missed games late in the schedule with an ankle injury. He started 50 of 66 games for the Lakers last year during the regular season, and so far this season, he’s averaging 13.9 points and 6.3 assists a game.

Toronto’s Dennis Schroder had something to say to Jayson Tatum after Celtics’ 105-96 win

“I (have) a lot of respect for him because, at his core, he just wants to win,” said Tatum postgame.

There was a moment in the Boston Celtics‘ 105-96 road win over the Toronto Raptors when it looked like former Celtics and current Raptors floor general Dennis Schroder was about to fight star Celtics forward Jayson Tatum after a collision mid-play. But the glare shot by Schroder at Tatum would misrepresent the bond the two players still have with each other.

After the final buzzer, the German point guard gave Tatum his jersey, signed with the message (via Celtics Blog’s Noa Dalzell) “Brodie for life — go get that chip this year; PS — top 5” written on it in sharpie.

Speaking to the media postgame, Tatum commented on his former teammate via NBC Sports Boston, h/t Dalzell. “Great guy, great teammate, just super competitive,” said the St. Louis native.

“When you get to be around him a lot more that, if he sees something he doesn’t like, he’s going to say it. If he did something I didn’t like, I was going to say it,” added Tatum.

“We had that trust that we just wanted to win. We had hard conversations, but I (have) a lot of respect for him because, at his core, he just wants to win. He’s a hell of a competitor.”

Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla responds to Dennis Schroder’s ire over late challenge in Raps’ drubbing

“Up 30 you’re not supposed to challenge nothing.” said former Boston guard Dennis Schroder of Mazzulla’s late call dispute.

When Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla challenged an out-of-bounds call on a play late in the Celtics’ 117-94 drubbing of the Toronto Raptors at TD Garden on Saturday night, it rubbed some of the Raptors the wrong way.

Given the contest was part of the group play segment of the NBA’s new in-season tournament where point differentials impact a club’s ability to advance, it might have added some extra impetus for the Raps’ players being extra salty about Boston’s evident desire to leverage every opportunity available to them in the contest. But former Celtics point guard Dennis Schroder in particular had some sharp words for the situation postgame.

“Up 30 you’re not supposed to challenge nothing. You won, it’s three minutes left. You shouldn’t disrespect us like that,” said the German floor general to the Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn.

Lip readers think Victor Wembanyama rejected Dennis Schroder’s help after falling with a saucy response

Victor Wembanyama might have a little attitude to go with his incredible game.

Victor Wembanyama isn’t your typical rookie — in case the smooth skillset packed into a 7-foot-4 frame didn’t tell you that already.

But what’s also becoming apparent is how different the 19-year-old is in how he carries himself, and he showed that to veteran Dennis Schroder during Sunday’s game between the San Antonio Spurs and Toronto Raptors.

After Wembanyama fell on the ground, Schroder tried to help the big man up only for his help to apparently have been rejected. Leaked audio of the exchange caught Schroder telling Wembanyama, “I was trying to help you out.” And though the rookie’s response is hard to make out in the video, lip readers think he said something you’d expect from someone much more established in the league.

“I don’t need your help.”

If that’s the attitude Wembanyama is playing with, he’s going to be even tougher for teams to handle than we thought.

Who are the highest-ranked European players to suit up for the Boston Celtics?

The Boston Celtics are no stranger to signing, drafting, or trading for international players.

The Boston Celtics are no stranger to signing, drafting, or trading for international players, with some proving to be absolutely critical parts of the teams that have won a league-record 17 titles over the decades.

But which of them were among the highest-ranked European players of all time over that stretch of nearly eight decades? With a reputation — especially in the 1980s and 1990s — of being “soft” and overly technical players utterly underserved based on how many have played on making the leap to the NBA, the number might have been higher, but in a recent such exercise put together by the staff of our sister site HoopsHype, there were still quite a few Celtics alumni listed.

Let’s take a look at which and where they were ranked.

Every Boston Celtics jersey in team history worn by ONLY one player

This is every player in Celtics history who was the only player to wear their jersey number.

The Boston Celtics have more retired jerseys than any other team in the NBA does, and given that knowledge, it might surprise you that they have plenty of jerseys only worn by one player in the entire 75-year history of the team.

Of course, a few of them are among those retired jerseys, but quite a few of them are not. As we draw near to the end of the 2023 offseason series of every jersey ever worn by a Boston Celtics player in the regular season, we would of course be remiss if we skipped out on these loners.

Let’s take a look at those most unique of Celtics jerseys throughout the years.

Who are the best international players to play for the Boston Celtics?

From Charlie Hoefer to Alaa Abdenaby to Rick Fox to Kristaps Porzingis, there has been no shortage of players who were born abroad who have worn the green and white.

The Boston Celtics are a storied franchise for more than just their titles. They have been a trailblazing team in terms of signing and fielding players from all over the world, a philosophy that started in their first season.

From Charlie Hoefer to Alaa Abdelnaby to Rick Fox to Kristaps Porzingis, there has been no shortage of players born abroad who have worn the green and white.

But who were the best and who were the worst? What criteria should we use to judge them across eras? In the spirit of the annual arrival of #RankingSeason, the thing to do is try.

And try the hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” did on a recent episode.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear how they assessed the international Celtics of all time.

Watch: Austin Reaves comments on Team USA’s shocking loss to Germany

Lakers guard Austin Reaves kept it real after Team USA lost its bid for the FIBA World Cup gold medal on Friday.

There will be no gold medal for the United States this year in the FIBA World Cup. Again.

Four years after it finished seventh in the last such tournament, Team USA lost in Friday’s semifinal round to Germany, 113-111. Former Los Angeles Lakers guard Dennis Schroder was ultimately a thorn in the side of the Americans. He put up 17 points and nine assists while hitting a dagger with under a minute left to seal their fate.

Austin Reaves did a lot to keep Team USA in the contest. He had a very efficient 21 points, with a good number of those points coming in the final minutes.

But he knew it was Team USA’s lack of defense that cost it the game and a shot at the gold medal.

Many have commented on Team USA’s lack of size this year. Ultimately, if it is to get back on track, it will have to revamp the roster to make sure it can hold down talented teams and control the defensive backboards.

On Friday, it gave up 12 offensive rebounds, 25 second-chance points and 50 points in the paint to the Germans.
