9 Giants who aren’t going to make the 53-man roster

The New York Giants must trim their roster to 53 men by 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday and these nine players simply aren’t going to make the cut.

The New York Giants will wrap up the preseason this Saturday night against the New York Jets and then trim their roster down to the required 53 players on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. ET.

There are many obvious locks to make the 53-man roster and there are a fair share who are certain to be sent on their way. It’s the limited men in the middle who face uncertain and uneasy futures.

Those of us at Giants Wire have already broken down many of the guarantees to make the cut, but now we’re going to look at those who aren’t.

Here are nine Giants who will almost certainly receive their walking papers on Tuesday.

Giants sign DB Darren Evans, place LB Jarrad Davis on season-ending IR

The New York Giants have signed DB Darren Evans and placed LB Jarrad Davis on season-ending IR as part of a trio of transactions.

The New York Giants officially placed linebacker Jarrad Davis on injured reserve on Tuesday night, ending his 2023 season.

This comes a week after it was reported that Davis would be out ‘long term‘ following knee surgery.

Davis was signed by the Giants late last season, starting in one regular season game and the Giants’ two playoff games, racking up seven combined tackles and one QB hit.

In addition to Davis landing on IR, the Giants also waived/injured (second-year) rookie Leonard Johnson.

Johnson went undrafted out of Duke last year and missed the entire season after suffering a torn ACL leading up to the 2022 NFL draft. The Giants signed him to a standard three-year deal back in March but now he faces another setback. If (when) Johnson goes unclaimed on waivers, he will revert to injured reserve.

Finally, the Giants also announced that they have signed defensive back Darren Evans.

Evans was originally signed as an undrafted free agent last year but he was waived at the end of training camp. After going unclaimed on waivers, Evans joined the XFL’s Arlington Renegades and went on to win a championship ring alongside several other ex-Giants, including safety Will Hill.

Will Hill among 6 ex-Giants to pick up XFL championship ring

The Arlington Renegades won the XFL Championship Game on Saturday night and six ex-New York Giants earned themselves a ring.

The Arlington Renegades (4-6) defeated the D.C. Defenders (9-1), 35-26, on Saturday night to claim the XFL championship. And that improbable victory means several former members of the New York Giants get a ring.

Among them is former Giants defensive coordinator Tim Lewis, who served as the Renegades’ co-defensive coordinator, and former Giants linebackers coach/defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan, who coached linebackers in Arlington.

Also receiving an XFL ring is safety Will Hill, who played for the Giants from 2012-2013 and had a ton of potential but was routinely suspended for violating the NFL’s policy and program for substances of abuse.

Other ex-Giants to pick up an XFL title in 2023 include offensive lineman Garrett McGhin (2022), cornerback Darren Evans (2022) and safety Joe Powell (2016).

In the 35-26 Renegades victory, Evans made five tackles (four solo), while Hill picked up three tackles (two solo) and one pass defensed, and Powell recorded three tackles (one solo) and a key interception off of Hill’s deflection.

Broncos hosted 6 players for tryouts last week

The Broncos brought in three defensive backs and three offensive linemen for tryouts last week.

The Denver Broncos brought in six players for tryouts on Friday — three defensive backs and three offensive linemen — according to the NFL’s transaction wire.

In the secondary, Denver tried out Darren Evans (Louisiana State), Delonte Hood (Peru State) and Jordan Miller (Washington). Evans and Hood are rookies. Miller has spent time with four NFL teams, most recently competing in training camp with the Buffalo Bills this summer.

On the offensive line, the Broncos brought in tackle Jean Delance (Florida) and guards Parker Ferguson (Air Force) and Sadarius Hutcherson (South Carolina). Hutcherson spent last season on injured reserve with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and then failed to make their 53-man roster this summer.

At the time of this writing, none of the six players who tried out have been signed. Denver likely views them as potential candidates to add if there are any injuries in the secondary or on the offensive line later in the season.

Giants officially sign 13 undrafted rookie free agents

The New York Giants have officially signed 13 undrafted rookie free agents ahead of their three-day minicamp.

The New York Giants will hold their three-day rookie minicamp beginning on Friday and that meant the arrival of many players on Thursday. It also meant the time had come to officially sign some contracts.

Following the NFL’s schedule release, the Giants officially announced the signing of 13 undrafted rookie free agents — many of whom we had been made aware of previously.

The 13 signees were as follows:

  • TE Austin Allen
  • DB Yusuf Corker
  • DT Jabari Ellis
  • DB Darren Evans
  • DB Zyon Gilbert
  • FB Jeremiah Hall
  • DT Christopher Hinton
  • TE Andre Miller
  • G Josh Rivas
  • DB Trenton Thompson
  • DT Antonio Valentino
  • RB Jashaun Corbin
  • EDGE Tomon Fox

In addition to those 13 players, the Giants have invited a slew of others for tryouts. And while those names have not yet been released, it’s expected that several NFL veterans will also be trying out for a spot on the 90-man roster.

Depth Chart released for the LSU-Kansas State Texas Bowl game

A look at the depleted two-deep roster for LSU.

Ahead of Tuesday’s bowl game against the Kansas State Wildcats, the LSU Tigers have released their two-deep depth chart for the game. As expected it shows a pretty depleted roster.

The biggest name not seen on the depth chart is starting cornerback Dwight McGlothern. One can expect that he might be moving on from the program. We haven’t heard any injury news on him to think that it might be a health issue.

At quarterback, they have Garrett Nussmeier as the starter with Tavion Faulk as the backup. The thought is that it would be Matt O’Dowd since he was the backup to Max Johnson for the season finale against Texas A&M but all that has changed.

I would still believe that Jontre Kirklin is more likely to play as the wildcat quarterback in this game. If they weren’t granted the waiver for Nussmeier’s redshirt, it will be up to him to make the decision on if he wanted to give up the redshirt year. LSU might also put them as the starter as to not give Kansas State any insight as to how they are planning on attacking the defense.

Darren Evans is expecting to be the starter at cornerback with no McGlothern. The safety tandem of Jay Ward and Todd Harris Jr are listed as the starters. Freshman Sage Ryan is listed as the backup at nickel to Pig Cage.

At linebacker, they won’t have Micah Baskerville and Damone Clark opted out so it will be former Clemson transfer Mike Jones Jr and Greg Penn II.

A full look at the two-deep:

LSU adds Nicholls State defensive back transfer

LSU addressed a need at cornerback by adding Nicholls State transfer Darren Evans.

Nicholls State defensive back Darren Evans is headed to LSU after entering the NCAA Transfer Portal in late August. He can begin practicing with the Tigers once he passes his physical.

The move isn’t exactly unexpected, considering that Orgeron recently said on a Zoom call with the media that the team was in search of a player at the position.

“That was the only initial that we have,” he said. “In order for us to sign, we have to have initial scholarship and that was the latest initial scholarship that we have and we’re looking for a cornerback and I think we’re going to use it on a cornerback and it should be happening soon.”

Evans has seen action in 14 games as a starting cornerback, recording 47 tackles and two tackles for loss. He also tied for fifth in the FCS with 15 pass breakups.

He joins a cornerback room with talent including Derek Stingley Jr., Cordale Flott and Eli Ricks.

With the NCAA allowing for the 2020 season to not count toward eligibility, Evans has the chance to play two years with the Tigers in Baton Rouge.

Could graduate transfer CB Darren Evans be heading to LSU?

The defending national champion LSU Tigers could be adding a veteran to the secondary soon.

The defending national champion LSU Tigers be adding a veteran to the secondary soon — or at least it’s totally plausible.

On Thursday, Nicholls State defensive back Darren Evans entered his name into the transfer portal with the hopes of playing his final collegiate season at the FBS level.

A Baton Rouge native, Evans quickly received a 247Sports Crystal Ball pick once he entered the transfer portal.

A 6-foot-3, 180-pound cornerback, Evans was an All-Southland Conference performer in 2018 and finished tied for fifth in the FCS with 15 pass breakups in 2019.

[lawrence-related id=10487]

Evans would certainly bring plenty of experience to the Tigers having started 37 games at cornerback for Nicholls over the last three seasons.

With Kary Vincent Jr. deciding to opt out this season, LSU could use depth and experience in the secondary. Derek Stingley Jr. has one spot locked down but a host of young players will battle to start opposite of him.

Sophomore Cordale Flott and freshmen Eli Ricks and Dwight McGlothern all figure to see plenty of time at corner this fall. LSU has only one junior or senior at cornerback currently and that is senior Lloyd Cole.

Ricks may follow Stingley’s lead and start as a true freshman on the outside, while Flott is in line to start at the nickel.

[lawrence-related id=10388]

If Evans chooses the Tigers, head coach Ed Orgeron will have more flexibility with his lineup this fall.

As a graduate transfer, Evans would be eligible immediately.
