Report: Buffalo Bills sign OL Garrett McGhin

Report: #Bills sign OL Garrett McGhin:

With a big need for offensive line depth, the Buffalo Bills have made an addition in the trenches.

According to reports including Syracuse.com, the team is expected to sign offensive lineman Garrett McGhin.

McGhin, 27, has previously had a free-agent workout in Buffalo last week. That came after the sudden retirement of Brandon Shell.

However, McGhin only has reportedly signed after the second blow to the offensive line via Tommy Doyle.

In the Bills’ 27-15 preseason loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Doyle sustained a season-ending knee injury. With back-to-back blows to the same position, Buffalo desperately needed an addition and went down a route they’ve traveled before.

McGhin has appeared in only two NFL games in his career. Most recently he played in the XFL.

But McGhin entered the NFL with the Bills in training camp in 2019 after going undrafted. That was his first of two offseason stints with the team.

McGhin then bounced around various practice squads and training camps with the Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and New York Jets.

Will Hill among 6 ex-Giants to pick up XFL championship ring

The Arlington Renegades won the XFL Championship Game on Saturday night and six ex-New York Giants earned themselves a ring.

The Arlington Renegades (4-6) defeated the D.C. Defenders (9-1), 35-26, on Saturday night to claim the XFL championship. And that improbable victory means several former members of the New York Giants get a ring.

Among them is former Giants defensive coordinator Tim Lewis, who served as the Renegades’ co-defensive coordinator, and former Giants linebackers coach/defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan, who coached linebackers in Arlington.

Also receiving an XFL ring is safety Will Hill, who played for the Giants from 2012-2013 and had a ton of potential but was routinely suspended for violating the NFL’s policy and program for substances of abuse.

Other ex-Giants to pick up an XFL title in 2023 include offensive lineman Garrett McGhin (2022), cornerback Darren Evans (2022) and safety Joe Powell (2016).

In the 35-26 Renegades victory, Evans made five tackles (four solo), while Hill picked up three tackles (two solo) and one pass defensed, and Powell recorded three tackles (one solo) and a key interception off of Hill’s deflection.

Giants having a glaring need at swing tackle

With Matt Gono likely being forced into retirement, the New York Giants have a glaring and concerning need at swing tackle.

The New York Giants appear set at starting offensive tackle with Andrew Thomas and rookie Evan Neal, but there are still notable issues behind them.

Veteran Matt Gono was signed this offseason to play swing tackle for the Giants, but a lingering neck injury is expected to end his career. That leaves the team with Devery Hamilton, Garrett McGhin and Roy Mbaeteka as their remaining reserves.

Hamilton went undrafted in 2021 and McGhin this past April, while Mbaeteka is an international import still very much new to NFL football.

These depth issues have been especially obvious in practice.

Shane Lemeiux, who has taken snaps at guard and center this summer, has expressed a willingness to play tackle if needed. Rookie Josh Ezeudu has also taken snaps as a swing, but the team likely prefers that he remain inside where he is their primary reserve.

Since camp opened, the Giants have held multiple tryouts including three offensive tackles on Thursday. However, the search continues as none have been signed.

This is an issue that general manager Joe Schoen will have no choice but to address, so expect more workouts and tryouts in the coming days, as well as a likely addition or two.

Giants sign OT Garrett McGhin, waive OT Kamaal Seymour

The New York Giants have signed OT Garrett McGhin and waived OT Kamaal Seymour with a failure to disclose physical condition designation.

The New York Giants continued their early training camp roster tinkering on Wednesday evening by signing offensive tackle Garrett McGhin.

The 6-foot-6, 302-pound McGhin originally signed with the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent out of East Carolina following the 2019 NFL draft. He’s also had stints with the Carolina Panthers (2019), Jacksonville Jaguars (2020-2021) and, most recently, the New Jersey Generals of the USFL.

General manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll obviously have some familiarity with McGhin from their time in Buffalo. The 26-year-old actually made two stops there (2019, 2020).

McGhin has appeared in only two NFL games with both of those coming in 2019 as a member of the Panthers.

In order to make room for McGhin on their 90-man roster, the Giants also waived offensive lineman Kamaal Seymour with a failure to disclose physical condition designation. He had been signed earlier this week.

In addition to McGhin, the Giants also worked out offensive lineman Tyree St. Louis, and linebackers Jordan Evans and Austin Calitro. None of the other three were signed.

Saints bring in 4 free agent linemen for tryouts

Saints bring in four free agent linemen for tryouts, including training camp right tackle Kyle Murphy

The New Orleans Saints auditioned four free agents for tryouts on Monday’s update to the daily NFL transactions wire, all of them linemen — two on offense and two on defense. It makes sense to restock the trenches given the injuries and losses New Orleans has sustained, having recently lost backup defensive tackle Josiah Bronson on waivers with starting offensive tackles Terron Armstead and Ryan Ramczyk missing multiple weeks with injuries.

While none of them have been signed just yet, here’s what you need to know about the four tryout players:

Bills release Ray-Ray McCloud, Garrett McGhin

Buffalo Bills release wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud and offensive lineman Garrett McGhin.

NFL teams have started to trim their rosters over the past few days after the league and players agreed to new protocol last week which calls for teams to carry 80 players during training camp, not the usual 90. That’s a safety measure due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The Bills are now on the board with starting to trim their roster as of Monday. The team announced that two players have been released by the team: Offensive lineman Garrett McGhin and wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud.

With these two moves, the Bills’ roster is now at 86 players.

McCloud was a sixth-round pick for the team from the 2018 NFL Draft. He was waived at the end of training camp last year, briefly joined the Panthers, and then re-signed with the Bills again via their practice squad. McCloud signed him to a reserve/future contract last January.

McCloud has made five catches for 36 yards with the Bills, and returned punts, but had trouble hanging onto the ball.

McGhin joined the Bills last year as an undrafted free agent from East Carolina, and then also was signed by the Panthers after the Bills released him following a training camp injury. He played in seven special teams snaps with the Panthers in 2019.

Report: Bills bring back depth OL Garrett McGhin

Buffalo Bills sign OL Garrett McGhin once again.

The Bills have brought back an offensive lineman Garrett McGhin, ESPN reports just prior to the start of the 2020 NFL Draft on Thursday:

McGhin, 24, signed with the Bills as a UDFA following last year’s draft. McGhin was signed as a rookie tryout player during Buffalo’s rookie minicamp and then landed a full deal. He spent the preseason with the Bills but was injured and eventually released prior to roster cuts. In November, the East Carolina product signed with the Carolina Panthers. The 6-foot-6, 316 pounder was active for two games and inactive for one, eventually landing on injured reserve once again. McGhin played all three spots on the offensive line in college.

Panthers place OL Garrett McGhin on IR, claim former Colts DB off waivers

Taking McGhin’s place on the 53-man roster will be former Colts defensive back T.J. Green, who the team claimed off waivers.

The Carolina Panthers put another player on the injured reserve list today. This time it’s offensive lineman Garret McGhin, who is done for the year due to an ankle injury.

Taking McGhin’s place on the 53-man roster will be former Colts defensive back T.J. Green, who the team claimed off waivers.

Green (6-foot-3, 215 pounds) played his college ball at Clemson, where he totaled three pass breakups and 5.5 tackles for a loss in 2015. Green also put in time as a kick returner for the Tigers. The next year, he was picked by the Colts in the second round of the NFL draft. He played 31 games for Indianapolis in two seasons, earning 11 starts and posting 85 total tackles.
