Report: Troy Brown garnering interest for college WR coach position

Troy Brown could be eyeing a jump to college football

Former New England Patriots assistant Troy Brown was on the Arizona State campus and is reportedly a candidate to replace Ra’Shaad Samples as the new wide receivers coach, per Noah Furtado of 247 Sports’ SunDevilSource

Brown has spent the last four seasons as a member of the Patriots’ coaching staff.

He was the running backs coach and kick returners coach in 2020, before serving in the role of kick returners and wide receivers coach from 2021-2023. He has remained on the New England staff, despite the organization hiring Tyler Hughes and Tiquan Underwood to coach wide receivers.

Brown has a long history with the Patriots as a player before he took up coaching. He was a decorated member of the team for 15 seasons and inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame in 2012.

Although Brown is technically still a member of the New England staff, it appears that he is garnering interest elsewhere. Things move fast in football circles, and it appears this situation is one of those cases.

Jerod Mayo revealed Troy Brown’s new role with Patriots

Here’s what Troy Brown will be doing on the Patriots’ coaching staff in 2024

Troy Brown will have a new role with the New England Patriots.

According to Patriots coach Jerod Mayo, via ESPN’s Mike Reiss, Brown’s new position will be in skill development.

Brown first began his Patriots coaching career in 2020 as the running backs and kick returners coach. He then switched over to working with the wide receivers in 2021.

New England hired Tyler Hughes to coach the wide receivers, as Mayo elected to bring in a new coaching staff. Former Patriots receiver Tiquan Underwood will also help with the receivers position as well.

The moving parts continue for New England, as they look to revamp and retool the Patriots offense.

Wide receiver production has been a glaring issue for the organization over the past couple of seasons, and they’re hopeful the coaching change, along with personnel improvements, can finally fix the problem.

Deeper dive into Patriots’ 2024 special teams coaching staff

Here’s a closer look at the Patriots’ 2024 special teams coaching staff

As the New England Patriots gear up for the upcoming NFL season, all eyes are on their revamped special teams unit, which found itself ranking amongst the worst in the league over the last two seasons.

Recognizing the critical need for a turnaround, the Patriots have embarked on a bold mission to revitalize their special teams by assembling a fresh and innovative coaching staff.

With a roster brimming with new ideas and diverse experiences, these specialists are poised to breathe new life into a unit that will no longer have Matthew Slater leading the way.

Let’s dive into the Patriots’ new-look special teams coaching staff, led by rookie coordinator Jeremy Springer.

Jerod Mayo confirms Troy Brown still on Patriots’ coaching staff

Troy Brown confirmed to still be on the Patriots’ coaching staff, per Jerod Mayo

The New England Patriots have a new wide receivers coach, but even with the change, Troy Brown will remain on the staff. Patriots coach Jerod Mayo confirmed the news during Wednesday’s introductory press conference for the team’s new coaching staff.

A change felt inevitable given the way the Patriots’ receivers have struggled in recent years. So the team moved to hire former offensive assistant Tyler Hughes for the job. Hughes has extensive experience with his last stop being in quality control of the offense at the University of Washington.

There has been no confirmation as of yet on what Brown’s new role with the Patriots will be. But it’s still good news to see the three-time Super Bowl-winning receiver sticking around in at least some capacity.

Mayo noted that the Patriots will have a larger coaching staff than they typically carried under Bill Belichick, who preferred a smaller staff with less defined roles.

Brown might not have been the choice for receivers coach, but he clearly brings something to the table that Mayo and company view as valuable.

Patriots WR coach Troy Brown to serve on 2024 Senior Bowl staff

Troy Brown will be coaching at the 2024 Senior Bowl

The New England Patriots will be represented at the 2024 Senior Bowl, as wide receivers coach Troy Brown will be the offensive coordinator for the American Team,

This isn’t Brown’s first go-around with collegiate all-star games. He served on the coaching staff in last year’s East-West Shrine Bowl game.

He has served on the Patriots’ coaching staff as wide receivers coach since 2021. He was a decorated receiver for the Patriots organization as a player from 1993-2007.

Brown could play a part in providing stability to Jerod Mayo, who will be entering his first season as the Patriots’ head coach. The real legwork begins at the Senior Bowl, where multiple prospects will have an opportunity to impress NFL coaches.

The Senior Bowl will take place on February 3 at the University of South Alabama. Along with Brown, the American Team will also consist of Tennessee Titans assistant head coach/defensive line coach Terrell Williams, Cleveland Browns defensive backs coach Ephraim Banda and New York Giants assistant special teams coach Mike Adams.

9 Giants who aren’t going to make the 53-man roster

The New York Giants must trim their roster to 53 men by 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday and these nine players simply aren’t going to make the cut.

The New York Giants will wrap up the preseason this Saturday night against the New York Jets and then trim their roster down to the required 53 players on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. ET.

There are many obvious locks to make the 53-man roster and there are a fair share who are certain to be sent on their way. It’s the limited men in the middle who face uncertain and uneasy futures.

Those of us at Giants Wire have already broken down many of the guarantees to make the cut, but now we’re going to look at those who aren’t.

Here are nine Giants who will almost certainly receive their walking papers on Tuesday.

Giants sign OL Julién Davenport, waive LB Troy Brown

The New York Giants signed OT Julién Davenport following a workout in East Rutherford on Tuesday and waived/injured LB Troy Brown.

The New York Giants rested most of their starters and had a few reserves sit out last Friday night against the Detroit Lions, but one thing was still glaringly obvious: they have depth issues along the offensive line.

Perhaps more specifically, the Giants have depth issues at offensive tackle behind Andrew Thomas and Evan Neal, who remains in concussion protocol.

In an effort to remedy that, the Giants held workouts on Tuesday in East Rutherford led by offensive line coach Bobby Johnson.

Among those in attendance were Julien Davenport and Lorenz Metz, with the former ultimately getting signed.

The 6-foot-7, 315-pound Davenport was originally a fourth-round pick of the Houston Texans in 2017. He quickly became a journeyman, spending time with the Miami Dolphins, Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears, and Arizona Cardinals in addition to the Texans.

In six seasons, the 28-year-old Davenport has appeared in 60 career games with 32 starts. His last regular season appearance came in 2021 with the Colts.

Davenport’s best analytic season came in 2020 when he earned an overall grade of 72.3 courtesy of Pro Football Focus. That same year, he posted an 87.6 pass blocking grade.

In 2021 with the Colts, Davenport earned a career-low 45.3 overall grade from PFF.

In a corresponding roster move, the Giants waived linebacker Troy Brown with an injury designation. If he clears waivers, he will revert to the reserve/injured list.

Patriots’ 2023 coaching staff with job titles

Here’s the Patriots’ 2023 coaching staff with job titles

New England Patriots training camp starts next week, and the organization revealed the roles for the coaches in the upcoming season.

There are several familiar faces back on the coaching staff, as well as new additions. Some of the more notable roles include Joe Judge as the assistant head coach and Evan Rothstein as the assistant quarterbacks coach.

The staff shakeup comes on the heels of a difficult 2022 season for New England, who missed the playoffs for the second time in three years. They’re hopeful the new-look staff can create the necessary changes to get the Patriots back into postseason contention.

Here’s the coaching staff expected to lead the way to change in 2023:

2023 NFL draft: Giants undrafted rookie free agent tracker

The rush to sign undrafted rookie free agents is underway! Here’s a live 2023 tracker for the New York Giants.

The 2023 NFL draft has officially come to a close and the frenzy to sign undrafted rookie free agents (UDFA) is underway.

For general manager Joe Schoen and the New York Giants, they’ll look to add several players prior to the start of rookie mini-camp which will take place from May 5-6 in East Rutherford.

“I think you tie in free agency and you tie in the draft and I’m excited to go upstairs and see where we are on some undrafted free agents,” general manager Joe Schoen said after the draft.

What to make of four Patriots coaches sent to NFL Scouting Combine

The Patriots sent four coaches to the NFL Scouting Combine this year.

The New England Patriots sent four members of their coaching staff to the NFL combine this week.

Wide receivers coach Troy Brown, corners coach Mike Pellegrino, special teams coordinator Cam Achord, and special teams assistant Joe Houston were all traveling down for the combine, per the Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan.

This is a slight change from last year, as New England kept their offensive assistants in New England, and did not send them down. The organization has been busy with offseason work, as several members of the coaching staff worked the East-West Shrine Bowl. Bill Belichick headlined a group that included defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington.

This is certainly an interesting tidbit of news, given that these coaches will probably work closely with New England’s draft picks. It is worth noting that director of player personnel Matt Groh also made the trip. The latter has seen an increase in duties this off-season, including signing Matthew Slater’s contract.

It will be intriguing to see what tidbits come out from the Combine, as this coaching staff gets ready to prep for the draft. It appears as though they have several bases covered positionally, in what could be a crucial draft for a team looking to take the next step.
