Chargers make roster moves ahead of Week 17 game vs. Broncos

The Chargers signed a wide receiver to the active roster.

The Chargers signed wide receiver Keelan Doss to the active roster ahead of the Week 17 matchup against the Broncos.

Additionally, they elevated defensive tackle Christopher Hinton and offensive lineman Austen Pleasants from the practice squad.

The signing of Doss comes after Keenan Allen and Joshua Palmer were ruled out. Doss joins a wide receiver room that consists of Quentin Johnston, Jalen Guyton, Alex Erickson and Derius Davis.

Doss has been promoted from the practice squad three times this season, logging 20 offensive snaps with zero targets.

Before joining the Bolts last season, Doss signed with the Raiders as an undrafted free agent in 2019. That year, he had 11 catches for 133 yards on 14 targets.

Doss was released in 2021 and then went on to join the practice squads of the Jaguars, Falcons, Jets and Giants across a four-year span.

Chargers sign Christopher Hinton to active roster, 2 to practice squad

The Chargers made a few roster moves on Monday.

The Chargers made a few roster moves on Monday.

Los Angeles signed defensive tackle Christopher Hinton to the active roster.

L.A. also announced they signed center Cameron Tom and defensive back Mark Webb Jr. to the practice squad.

Hinton appeared in four games for the Chargers in 2022, recording three tackles and a quarterback hit. He was waived last week to make room for cornerback Essang Bassey.

Tom has spent time with the Saints and Dolphins and has appeared in 13 games, with one start for New Orleans in 2017. He recently was on the Eagles’ practice squad in 2022.

Webb, Los Angeles’ seventh-round pick, appeared in seven games before landing on the injured reserve in 2021. He has been a mainstay on the Chargers’ practice squad since then.

Chargers roster bubble: Which players helped their cause in preseason Week 2

Which Chargers helped themselves as a result of their performances in Week 2 vs. the Saints? Let’s take a look at who impressed.

There’s just one week until all NFL rosters must be cut down to 53 players by 4 PM ET next Tuesday.

Unlike previous seasons, the Chargers haven’t had to make more minor cuts before creating the final roster. Many players have gotten their chance to prove themselves in the preseason. Of course, the practice squad will also be formed in addition to their 53-man roster.

Which players helped themselves the most due to their performances in Week 2 against the Saints? With one preseason game left, let’s look at who impressed.

TE Stone Smartt

Smartt led the team in receptions with four for 32 yards. Smartt leaped in the air for an acrobatic catch on a slight overthrow from Easton Stick. Later in the game, he’d throw a block to get his quarterback into the end zone on a designed run.

It’s probably still tough for Smartt to make the roster with Gerald Everett, Donald Parham, and Tre’ McKitty in front of him. On a pure merit basis, though, Smartt has been the most consistent tight end in preseason action, with Everett not playing. He’s starting to feel like a practice squad lock, even if he doesn’t make the active roster.

RT Zack Bailey

Bailey is a right tackle, as listed on the roster, but he’s been kicking inside this preseason for some reps at right guard. So far, so good. Bailey has easily been one of the best depth linemen through two games.

Bailey has 80+ PFF grades in both pass blocking and run blocking. The South Carolina product allowed just one pressure against the Saints.

Considering that the Austen Pleasants and Foster Sarell experience at the tackle spots hasn’t been much to write home about, I’ll be curious to see if Bailey gets some snaps at his natural position against the Niners on Friday.

CB Tiawan Mullen

Tiawan Mullen had a top-three Chargers’ coverage grade on PFF against the Saints. As far as the preseason goes, he’s been one of LA’s top performers in the secondary. He’s a relentless tackler despite his size.

In Sunday’s game, Mullen had a critical pass breakup on third down and was active as a special teams tackler. With the Chargers already loaded up in the secondary on the main roster, Mullen’s role on the team would primarily have to be on the practice squad. However, there’s an opportunity for him to get that chance, given Kemon Hall’s recent injury and surgery.

WR Keelan Doss

Doss has been the most steady Chargers’ depth wide receiver through two games. Many early preseason hype went to John Hightower in the receiver room as the potential breakout star to make the roster. But when the games have mattered, Doss has been the steadier performer.

Doss has six receptions for 81 yards in his first two preseason contests, 42 of which came against New Orleans on Sunday. The most impressive thing to me was how comfortable Doss looked being used in motion in the Kellen Moore offense. The Chargers did list him higher than Hightower originally on their unofficial depth chart, and it’s certainly played out that way to this point.

Making the roster will depend on the status of Jalen Guyton. Guyton is the sixth receiver if he comes off the PUP list before the season. But Doss is making a name for himself to clinch a practice squad spot or be the placeholder if Guyton is not ready by Week 1.

DT Christopher Hinton

Hinton is making a solid case to be the sixth defensive tackle on the final 53-man roster if tackle Otito Ogbonnia remains on the PUP list. On Sunday, Hinton had a sack, two pressures, and two run stops against New Orleans. He showed excellent hustle on his sack, in particular after knocking down a Saints lineman.

Hinton also played with a similar relentless motor in the first preseason game against the Rams. Assuming Ogbonnia is not ready to start the season, Hinton feels like a quiet lock to make the roster.

WR Terrell Bynum

An outstanding catch in triple coverage on 4th and 23 is certainly one way to endear yourself to both the coaching staff and Chargers fans:

Bynum is competing for one of the practice squad receiver spots, if anything, but he’s had a presence in camp. He and Hightower were both productive at the scrimmage, and he’s been consistent throughout the month.

Roster bubble update after first week of Chargers training camp

After a full week of training camp, here is an update on Chargers players fighting for a roster spot.

While highlight reels from superstar players tend to grab the headlines during NFL training camps, there are upwards of 40 players on every team fighting for their professional survival.

The Chargers are no exception, with a handful of final roster spots available for the taking.

Here are the ones making an impression.

5 position battles to watch during Chargers training camp

While many starting spots are locked up before the Chargers take the field, here are a few that will be contested throughout the next month.

The Chargers officially begin training camp Wednesday with their first practice of the season.

With two new coordinators in Costa Mesa, things could look much different than they did last season as LA looks to finally turn a talented roster on paper into a legitimate contender.

While many starting spots are locked up before the Chargers take the field, here are a few that will be hotly contested throughout the next month.

Chargers make roster moves on Wednesday

The Chargers announced that defensive lineman Joe Gaziano was placed on the IR.

The Chargers announced Wednesday that defensive lineman Joe Gaziano was placed on the injured reserve. In correspondence, Los Angeles signed DL Christopher Hinton to the active roster.

Additionally, L.A. signed wide receiver Jason Moore and DL Aaron Crawford to the practice squad.

Gaziano suffered a groin injury in the victory over the Titans. In five games, he logged eight tackles, a tackle for loss and a sack.

Hinton has appeared in one game this season in Week 14 against the Dolphins. He was inactive last weekend after being promoted from the practice squad.

Moore caught one of his two targets for five yards through six games this season with the Chargers.

Crawford started his career with the Ravens as an undrafted rookie out of North Carolina in 2020. He appeared in one game that season. Crawford spent time on the Giants’ practice squad before being waived.

The Chargers are getting some help back on offense.

Tight end Donald Parham was activated from Injured Reserve on Saturday. In correspondence, the team waived wide receiver Jason Moore Jr.

In addition, Los Angeles elevated defensive lineman Christopher Hinton and safety Raheem Layne from the practice squad.

Parham went on injured reserve on Nov. 5 with a hamstring injury, the same issue that forced him to miss most of training camp and the first four games to start the season.

Parham has played only two games this season, making three catches for 53 yards. He finished the 2021 season with 20 receptions on 27 targets for 190 yards and three touchdowns in 14 games.

Chargers make roster moves ahead of Week 14 matchup with Dolphins

The Chargers made some roster moves ahead of their matchup with the Dolphins on Sunday.

The Chargers made some roster moves ahead of their matchup with the Dolphins on Sunday.

Los Angeles signed cornerback Kemon Hall to the active roster from the practice squad. In correspondence, the team placed tight end Richard Rodgers on the injured reserve.

Further, the Bolts promoted safety Raheem Layne and defensive tackle Christopher Hinton from the practice squad.

With Bryce Callahan out with a groin injury, Hall provides additional depth.

Derwin James will be sidelined with a knee issue. Layne is capable of playing “Money,” a hybrid linebacker-safety role.

Sebastian Joseph-Day will be out with a knee injury, so Hinton is another body along the interior part of the defensive line.

Giants sign OL Josh Rivas and OL Chris Owens, waive one

The New York Giants have signed offensive linemen Josh Rivas and Chris Owens, and waived DT Christopher Hinton and placed one on IR.

Editor’s note: The Giants initially announced that wide receiver Keelan Doss had been waived. After Robert Foster suffered an injury in practice, they pulled that transaction back and kept Doss on the roster.

The New York Giants are completely ravaged by injury with the offensive line being the hardest hit position.

No, we’re not recycling headlines from the past decade. It’s true once again and it’s creating serious problems as the team heads into Week 2 of the preseason.

Head coach Brian Daboll acknowledged on Friday that the Giants would have to cut two players in order to sign reserve offensive linemen following a morning workout. The two incoming linemen are Josh Rivas, who had been released last week, and rookie center/guard Chris Owens (Alabama).

In order to clear room for Rivas and Owens, the Giants have waived defensive tackle Christopher Hinton and placed wide receiver Robert Foster on injured reserve (IR) with a hamstring injury.

The Giants have seen an overwhelming number of injuries this summer with as many as 26 players missing practice on any given day. Along the offensive line, they’ve lost tackle Matt Gono (neck) and rookie guard Marcus McKethan (ACL) for the season.

Meanwhile, Ben Bredeson, Jon Feliciano, Shane Lemieux, Jamil Douglas and Joshua Ezeudu are all missing time with one injury or another. Bredeson, who was serving as the team’s fourth different starting center, left practice on Thursday with an elbow injury.

Center Nick Gates and tackle Matt Peart also remain on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

In the absence of Gates, Feliciano, Lemieux, Bredeson and Douglas, Daboll said veteran Max Garcia will start at center against the Cincinnati Bengals. And because of that change and lacking depth, he says the coaches will have to discuss whether of not quarterback Daniel Jones plays.
