Every Husker on a United Football League roster

The start of the spring season of professional football is right around the corner.

The start of the spring season of professional football is right around the corner. The United Football League will kick off its inaugural season in 2024.

The professional football league results from a merger between XFL and the United States Football League. This version of the UFL is not connected to the United Football League, which played from 2009 to 2012.

The modern UFL will feature eight teams with two divisions, the XFL Division and the USFL Division. Nebraska will be represented on five of the league’s eight rosters.

You can scroll below to find each of the five former Cornhuskers below. The UFL will kick off its inaugural season on Saturday, March 30.

Former Husker tight end signs with United Football League

A former Nebraska tight end will be continuing his professional football career this spring.

A former Nebraska tight end will continue his professional football career this spring. Austin Allen has signed with the Arlington Renegades of the United Football League.

Allen played for Nebraska from 2017-2021. The Aurora, Nebraska, native appeared in 34 games for the Cornhuskers, making 65 receptions for 975 and three touchdowns.

During his senior season, he had 38 catches for 602 yards and two touchdowns. Allen was also named first-team All-Big Ten that season and was the Kwalick-Clark Tight End of Year for the conference.

Following his time in Lincoln, Allen signed with the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent. After being released by the Giants, he signed with the Green Bay Packers as a practice squad member for part of the 2023 season.

The Renegades are one of four XFL teams to join the UFL for the 2024 season. They won the XFL title last year. The team is coached by former Oklahoma Sooners head coach Bob Stoops.

Opportunity awaits Austin Allen but Packers will keep watch on TE market during cutdowns

Tyler Davis’ season-ending injury has opened the door for Austin Allen at tight end for the Packers, but Brian Gutekunst will be keeping an eye on the tight end market.

With Tyler Davis out for the season with an ACL injury, Austin Allen is going to have more opportunities to try and earn a roster spot, but the Packers will also be keeping a close eye on the tight end market once final roster cuts are made.

Technically, the Packers have just three healthy tight ends on the roster currently in Allen, Luke Musgrave, and Tucker Kraft. Josiah Deguara and Henry Pearson were listed on the unoffical depth chart as fullbacks. In Davis’ absence the last week, we’ve seen Deguara lining up more so as a traditional tight end in-line, but if the Packers want to keep him primarily in that fullback role, they’ll either need Allen to seize the opportunity or make an outside addition.

Davis had been the best blocking tight end in training camp prior to his injury. Now without him on the field, Musgrave’s early impact coming in the passing game, along with many rookie tight ends struggling as blockers, Allen’s impact is going to have to come specifically in that aspect of the game.

“He’s a bit of a different athlete,” said Brian Gutekunst on Friday, “but obviously he’s got great size. He’s more your Y-type of blocker. But he’s done a nice job in camp and he’s going to get the opportunity to fill that role.”

Allen stands 6-8 tall and went undrafted out of Nebraska in 2022. His role in this offense isn’t going to come in the passing game, but his shear size makes him a difficult matchup for many as he will use that to his advantage to out physical defenders on the practice field this summer.

As a blocker during his final college season in 2021, Allen ranked 35th among all tight ends in PFF’s run-blocking and pass-blocking grades. During the Packers first preseason game against Cincinnati, it was Allen who threw a key block on Emanuel Wilson’s 80-yard touchdown run.

“Austin has done a nice job,” said Matt LaFleur following the Bengals’ game. “I noticed him a little bit on teams as well. One play that stood out to me was we ran an inside zone with a cross zip, where he did a really nice job of throwing his face on the defenders leg, coming across the formation and cutting him down. He’s going to get more opportunities, especially with TD being out and he’s going to have to take advantage of those.”

Also an important aspect for Allen in making a potential roster push is going to be contributing on special teams. This is the case for just about every player on the back end of the depth chart fighting for a roster spot, but the loss of Davis for the season is also going to be felt in that phase of the game as well. In 2022, Davis led the team in special teams snaps, playing on a variety of phases and recorded double-digit tackles.

“Austin has done some good things for us,” said special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia. “Rushing the punter, he’s played field goal protection for us on the wing, and makes us a little bit expanded at that position. And he’s done some good things for us on the kick return and he’ll play a lot, hopefully in the kicking game come tomorrow (verse New England).”

Over the final two weeks of training camp practices, which include two preseason games, Allen will have the opportunity to showcase what he can do. However, there is also the very real possibility that the Packers’ third tight end — or fourth depending on how you classify Deguara — is not on the roster yet.

With the current state of the tight end free agent market incredibly thin, Green Bay is a prime candidate to play the waiting game for the time being, and make an addition once final roster cutdowns around the league take place. It was at that time last summer that the Packers were able to sign Rudy Ford, who contributed both on special teams and defense in 2022.

“I like our group as it is right now,” said Gutekunst. “But that’s certainly something we will look at as we get to the cutdown day and beyond. Losing Tyler that’s a big loss for us because of all the things he did on offense and special teams, and he was a bit of a core leader for us.

“Somebody is going to have fill that role,” Gutekunst added. “I think everybody is going to have to pick it up a little bit to get beyond that, but I think we will always be looking at that spot.”

With the additions of Musgrave and Kraft, there is a lot of potential in this Green Bay tight end room. Musgrave’s athleticism and Kraft’s well-rounded skill set give this Packers offense two elements they didn’t have last season. However, there is also a lot of unknowns at this position as well, given the steep learning curve that comes with first year players at this position, along with the lack of experienced depth as well.

Razorback players who could have been on cover of EA Sports college football game since 2015

Matt Jones and Darren McFadden were definitely video game cover worthy when at Arkansas. We look and see who could’ve been on a cover since 2015.

Former Arkansas back Peyton Hillis once graced the cover of Madden NFL 12 when he was with the Cleveland Browns, but not since Darren McFadden on XBOX 360 for NCAA Football 09 has a Hog collegiate player ever been featured.

That could change in the future, and our colleague Patrick Conn wrote on Thursday who he felt might have been on the cover ever since the NCAA Football franchise was discontinued after the 2014 season.

The franchise is coming back, under a different name this time around, and is dealing with NIL uncertainty but should be ready in time for next summer for fans to play.

With this in mind, we’ll pick which Razorback football players we think possibly were cover-worthy from 2015 to the present.

Packers sign 2 players, including K Matt Ammendola, to practice squad

The Packers signed K Matt Ammendola and TE Austin Allen to the practice squad on Tuesday.

The Green Bay Packers signed kicker Matt Ammendola and tight end Austin Allen to the team’s practice squad on Tuesday.

In Ammendola, the Packers will get an experienced kicker who can provide insurance behind Mason Crosby. Ramiz Ahmed, who was elevated from the practice squad last week, was injured during pre-game and didn’t play, necessitating the need to add another kicker.

Over two NFL seasons, Ammendola – an undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma State – has made 18 of 26 field goals and 19 of 21 extra points while delivering touchbacks on 61.3 percent of his kickoffs. He played two games for the Kansas City Chiefs (Weeks 2-3) and two games for the Arizona Cardinals (Weeks 5-6) this season. In Week 5, he missed what would have been the game-tying field goal from 43 yards out against the Philadelphia Eagles. Last season, Ammendola made 13 of 19 field goals for the New York Jets.

Allen (6-8, 253) is an undrafted free agent out of Nebraska. He spent time on the practice squad of the New York Giants as a rookie last season but was released by the team at final roster cuts in August of this year. During his final collegiate season, Allen caught 38 passes for 602 yards, setting new school records in each category for a tight end, and he was named the Big Ten’s tight end of the year.

At the 2021 NFL Scouting Combine, Allen ran the 40-yard dash in 4.83 seconds, finished the three-cone drill in 7.0 seconds, hit 34″ in the vertical leap and covered 10-1 in the broad jump. His Relative Athletic Score (RAS) is 8.08 out of 10.0.

Giants sign WR Marcus Johnson to active roster, two to practice squad

The New York Giants have signed WR Marcus Johnson to their 53-man roster and shuffled their practice squad, signing two and releasing one.

The New York Giants have signed wide receiver Marcus Johnson from their practice squad to the active roster.

The 6-foot-1, 204-pound Johnson had been an elevation in each of the past two weeks and went on to start both games. He recorded five receptions for 60 yards over that span, but also dropped one touchdown.

Before joining the Giants in September, Johnson had spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles, Seattle Seahawks, Indianapolis Colts, Tennessee Titans and San Francisco 49ers.

The Giants still have one open spot remaining on their 53-man roster.

Additionally, the team signed offensive tackle Korey Cunningham and tight end Lawrence Cager to their practice squad.

Cunningham had spent the 2021 season with the Giants and was with them throughout the summer before his contract was terminated in late July due to a non-football injury. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Cager joins the Giants after being released by the New York Jets over the weekend.

In order to make room for both Cunningham and Cager, who is a rookie, the Giants released tight end Austin Allen from the reserve unit.

Huskers in the NFL: Week 3

The NFL season is now officially in full swing after three weeks and this most recent slate of games delivered on drama (or not if you’re a fan of watching a scoring shootout in prime time). With the Nebraska Cornhuskers on bye in Week 4 of the college football season, Husker fans got to enjoy seeing some former stars in the red and white play at the next level.

15 players who spent their college career at Nebraska saw action in the NFL this week. 5 additional former Huskers are on practice squads (Ben Stille, Carlos Davis, Devine Ozigbo, Austin Allen and Khalil Davis) and two more have yet to play in the 2022-23 season due to injury. Cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt is on Cincinnati’s IR and offensive lineman Nick Gates is on the New York Giants’ Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

Lavonte David and Randy Gregory led the way with big defensive performances but read below to see how all the former Huskers fared in Week 3 of the NFL season:

3 most intriguing names on Giants’ offensive roster

A look at the three most intriguing and under-the-radar players on the New York Giants’ offensive roster.

The New York Giants are undergoing a roster overhaul this season with tons of changes on both sides of the ball. They have brought in a slew of players that have gotten little press coverage this spring.

Here are three names on the offense that intrigue heading into training camp.

Giants officially sign 13 undrafted rookie free agents

The New York Giants have officially signed 13 undrafted rookie free agents ahead of their three-day minicamp.

The New York Giants will hold their three-day rookie minicamp beginning on Friday and that meant the arrival of many players on Thursday. It also meant the time had come to officially sign some contracts.

Following the NFL’s schedule release, the Giants officially announced the signing of 13 undrafted rookie free agents — many of whom we had been made aware of previously.

The 13 signees were as follows:

  • TE Austin Allen
  • DB Yusuf Corker
  • DT Jabari Ellis
  • DB Darren Evans
  • DB Zyon Gilbert
  • FB Jeremiah Hall
  • DT Christopher Hinton
  • TE Andre Miller
  • G Josh Rivas
  • DB Trenton Thompson
  • DT Antonio Valentino
  • RB Jashaun Corbin
  • EDGE Tomon Fox

In addition to those 13 players, the Giants have invited a slew of others for tryouts. And while those names have not yet been released, it’s expected that several NFL veterans will also be trying out for a spot on the 90-man roster.

Top 5 first-year-as-starter seasons at quarterback since 2000

Arkansas has had a number of quarterbacks put up impressive numbers in their first season as the starter.

KJ Jefferson has impressed to say the least in his first full season as the starter in 2021.

Jefferson had made spot starts in his first two seasons on campus (the first was a redshirt) but he is firmly entrenched now.

Arkansas has had a number of quarterbacks make a splash in their first year as the starter since the turn of the millennium.

Here is a look at the top five seasons compiled by first year Razorback signal callers since 2000.
