RB Chase Edmonds (ARI) – Hip
RB Darrell Henderson (LAR) – Ankle

WR Jakeen Grant (MIA) – Ankle

Chasing Ambulances

QB Matt Stafford (DET)  – Stafford keeps getting knocked out of games and this time it was an ankle sprain. It is reported to be minor,  and he may play in Week 17. He already said that he would play the final game if possible and there is a chance that it would be his final game in Detroit if trade rumors end up being true.

QB Kyler Murray (ARI) – Had his leg whipped in the loss to the 49ers but initial evaluations were that it wasn’t serious. HC Kliff Kingsbury hasn’t officially given an update yet which will be later this week.

QB Deshaun Watson (HOU) – His arm was awkwardly bent backward on a pass play when he was hit as he threw the ball. He his was stuck in the facemask of the defender as he went by. He did return to the field for one more pass but his arm will undergo further examination to ensure that he did not damage it.

QB Jared Goff (LAR) – Early word is that Goff broke the thumb on his passing hand when it hit a defender’s helmet after a pass. There are concerns that he will miss the critical matchup with the Cardinals this week if not even more time. John Wolford is the backup quarterback. He was a free agent rookie in 2018 that played for the Arizona Hotshots in the AAF league.

RB J.K. Dobbins (BAL) – Had his chest  injured in the third quarter of the win over the Giants on a hard tackle and was held out of rest of the game. He wasn’t needed so they could have just been protective of their primary running back. There should be more clarity after Monday.

RB Darrell Henderson (LAR) – Left the loss to the Seahawks after injuring his ankle and never returned. He limped off the field. With Cam Akers already out with a high-ankle sprain, the Rams are down to only Malcolm Brown and practice squadder Xavier Jones.

Free Agents, Flops and Other Notables

TE Irv Smith Jr. (MIN) – The second-year tight end is stepping up into a bigger role. He caught six passes for 53 yards and two scores in the loss to the Saints this week, which gives him five touchdowns over his last five games.

RB Ke’Shawn Vaughn (TB) – Ran for 62 yards on 15 carries and caught a seven-yard pass. Leonard Fournette signed a one-year deal and is expected to sign elsewhere so Vaughn should step into the No. 2 role behind Ronald Jones next year.

RB Jeff Wilson (SF) – Ran for a career-high 183 yards on 22 rushes in the win over the Cardinals. He added a 21-yard catch for a touchdown. No other back ran more than twice. The 49ers like their committee and Wilson is making a case to remain part of the rotation even when Raheem Mostert is healthy – which has not been that often this year.

QB Taylor Heinicke (WAS) – Dwayne Haskin is likely to have plenty of time for the strip club since he’s likely played his last for the Football Team. Haskin was benched after throwing for 154 yards and two interceptions as Washington fell behind 20-0 against the visiting Panthers. Heinicke came into the game and completed 12-of-19 for 137 yards and one score. If Alex Smith remains out in Week 17, Heinicke is likely to be the starter.

RB Myles Gaskin (MIA) – He returned from a two-game absence on the COVID-list and was reported to share the workload with Salvon Ahmed who has impressed when given the opportunity. But Ahmed only carried six times for two yards while Gaskin led the Dolphins with 14 carries for 87 yards, and was also their leading receiver with five catches for 82 yards and two touchdowns. Cannot imagine that running back will be considered a need in the offseason.

RB Samaje Perine (CIN) – The fourth-year journeyman back logged a career-best 95 yards on 13 carries with two touchdowns and four receptions for 41 yards. Perine was given a longer look to help the Bengals make decisions in the offseason and he responded well, although they played the Texans.  He’ll face the Ravens next week which will be more telling.

WR Curtis Samuel (CAR) – Led the Panthers with a career-best 106 yards on five catches in the win in Washington and he was also the leading rusher with a career-high 52 yards on seven carries. The former second-round pick in 2018 had been a disappointment but has fourished in HC Matt Rhule’s new offense.

RB Dare Ogunbowale (JAC) – Replaced James Robinson against the Bears and ran for 71 yards on 14 carries. He added three catches for seven yards. Playing at the Colts will be tougher if Robinson remains out, but Ogunbowale gets the benefit of the defense not caring as much about the rushing offense during the second half when the Jaguars are falling further behind.

RB Darrell Williams (KC) – With Clyde Edwards-Helaire out, the expectation was that Le’Veon Bell would take over as the primary back and potentially be a big asset. But Bell only ran for 30 yards on seven carries and caught a single pass for nine yards. Williams ran ten times for 46 yards and caught four passes for 27 yards. Same split backfield and Bell was still the No. 2 back.

QB Justin Herbert (LAC) – He passed for 253 yards and one score in the win over the Broncos. That totaled 28 touchdowns which is a new all-time rookie record, surpassing Baker Mayfield’s 27.

WR Ja’Marcus Bradley (CLE) – The Browns lost all of the wideouts on their active roster to the COVID list, and called up Bradley from the practice squad. He caught 5-of-11 targets for 60 yards as the second best receiver for the Browns behind only Austin Hooper. Baker Mayfield did not shy away from him during his debut.

RB Jonathan Taylor (IND) – Not sure how it works in 2021 if Marlon Mack returns, but Taylor has responded well when used as a full-time workhorse. He ran for 74 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries at the Steelers and that gives him five touchdowns and 307 rushing yards over his last three games.

TE Travis Kelce (KC) – Caught seven passes for 98 yards and a touchdown in the win over the Falcons. That gives him 1,416 yards in the season for the most by any tight end in NFL history. And he has one more game to play.

WR DeSean Jackson (PHI) – He was finally activated from injured reserve and caught just one pass at the Cowboys – an 81-yard touchdown in the first quarter. He never had another target but showed his vintage bomb-catching ability in his first game back.

RB AJ Dillon (GB) – The Packers second-round rookie saw minimal use in the  seven previous games that he was active.  He spent time on the COVID-19 list. Jamaal Williams missed this week with a thigh injury and Dillon was expected to provide relief carries for Aaron Jones. But the 6-0, 247-pound back proved an effective weapon in the snowy conditions in Green Bay on Sunday night. Jones gained 94 yards on ten carries but the rookie ended with 124 yards and two touchdowns on his 21 carries. He added a five-yard catch. On a cold, sloppy field, the powerback brings a new element to the backfield.

QB Jalen Hurts (PHI) – Passed for 338 yards and ran for 63 yards in the loss in Dallas. Combined with Week 15, he joins Michael Vick as the only quarterbacks with back-to-back games of 300 passing yards and 50 rushing yards.

8-7 Cardinals

Huddle player of the week

Alvin Kamara  –  It was amazing enough to happen at all and for Week 16 when fantasy championships are being earned? Kamara ran for 155 yards on 22 carries and an astounding six touchdowns – it could have been seven but they let Taysom Hill run one in for some reason. Kamara also added three catches for 17 yards in one of the best fantasy performances of all time. Sadly, not every Kamara owner was in their league championship and the performance was wasted.

Jags injury report: QB Gardner Minshew returns to practice as a limited participant

The Jacksonville Jaguars only had three players who didn’t participate in practice Wednesday as they continued to prepare for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Those players were all pass catchers in Laviska Shenault Jr. (hamstring), James O’Shaughnessy (knee), and Tyler Eifert (scheduled day off).

Of the three, Shenault was expected to surface on the injury report after missing Week 10’s game against the Green Bay Packers. Doug Marrone also warned the media earlier in the day that Shenault wouldn’t practice and added that he’d be questionable this week.

Everyone else on the injury report was limited, including quarterback Gardner Minshew II, who appears to be working his way back to 100%. He was limited for the first time since the Jags’ bye week as he revealed that he had been dealing with a thumb injury that he kept disclosed from the staff dating back to Week 5. Like Shenault, his situation was expected as Marrone told the media that Minshew would begin throwing against air this week. Marrone also revealed that Minshew wouldn’t be ready this week as the staff would use this week to monitor him.

As previously reported, center Brandon Linder returned to practice while Devine Ozigbo practiced for the first time since re-agitating his hamstring Week 5. Linder is expected to play, but Ozigbo will be monitored this week. If he can’t go, the Jags could either sign a running back or activate one from their practice squad as they are down to just two in James Robinson and Dare Ogunbowale after Chris Thompson (back) was placed on injured reserve.

Speaking of Robinson, he also surfaced on the injury report with a shoulder injury. His situation will be worth watching heading forward as he’s the Jags’ most consistent threat.

Offensive tackle Cam Robinson (shoulder) was also a notable offensive player on the injury report. He was expected to surface on the list as well after he exited Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers. Earlier in the week, Marrone said he’d be “fine” so his situation doesn’t look overly concerning.

As for the defense, three starters were on the injury report in defensive end Josh Allen (hip) and cornerbacks Sidney Jones IV (Achilles) and CJ Henderson (groin). No updates were provided on their situations beforehand, so all three will be worth monitoring in the coming days.

Jags RB Devine Ozigbo designated to return from IR

The Jacksonville Jaguars could be on the verge of getting one of their training camp standouts back.

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced that running back Devine Ozigbo has been designated to return from the team’s injured reserve list Wednesday. With that being the case, they now have 21 days to officially place him on the active roster.

After an impressive training camp, Ozigbo was placed on injured reserve prior to the Jags’ Week 1 game against the Indianapolis Colts with a hamstring injury. That resulted in rookie James Robinson seeing a bulk of the snaps Week 1, allowing him to solidify himself as one of the league’s top running backs.

Currently the Jags have three running backs on their roster in Robinson, Chris Thompson, and Dare Ogunbowale. As previously stated, Robinson has handled a majority of the workload on offense accumulating just under 200 offensive snaps (59%). Thompson has mostly been used on third-downs, accumulating 119 snaps (36%) while Ogunbowale has only seen five offensive snaps (2%) and 55 special teams snaps (42%).

The Jags will be taking on a Detroit Lions team that is currently 30th against the run and has allowed an average of 170.3 yards on the ground. That makes for the perfect situation to possibly ease Ozigbo into the lineup, but Robinson has more than proven he can handle things in the backfield if the Jags want to wait.

Former Badger running back signs with the Jacksonville Jaguars

After being cut last week by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, former Wisconsin Badger running back…

After being cut last week by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, former Wisconsin Badger running back Dare Ogunbowale found a new NFL home yesterday as he signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Ogunbowale was a team captain for the Buccaneers a year ago so his release was surprising news, though made sense with the team bringing in Leonhard Fournette recently to complete the running back room.

The former Badger figures to be a big piece in the Jaguars’ running back rotation as the only backs ahead of him on the roster are Chris Thompson, Devine Ozigbo and James Robinson.

The slot-switching between Fournette and Ogunbowale actually bodes well for the former Badger’s future in the NFL as he now has a path to regular carries and touches in Jacksonville instead of sitting behind Ronald Jones II and LeSean McCoy in Tampa Bay.

Jags officially sign RB Dare Ogunbowale, send Devine Ozigbo to IR

With Devine Ozigbo recently sustaining a hamstring injury, the Jags went to the free-agency wire to find a replacement in Dare Ogunbowale.

As previously reported, the Jacksonville Jaguars were in the process of signing former Tampa Bay Bucs running back Dare Ogunbowale and completed the transaction Thursday morning. To make room for his addition, they placed running back Devin Ozigbo (hamstring) on injured reserve.

Ozigbo was projected to see a solid workload alongside James Robinson and Chris Thompson this year as the team recently waived Leonard Fournette. However, after showing up on the injury report Wednesday, his time on the field will be put on hold.

Under the new rules for IR (changed due to COVID-19), players now only have to wait three weeks before they can return from the list. There is also no limit on the amount of players who can return from IR in 2020.

As for Ogunbowale, he was a casualty of the Tampa Bay Bucs adding Leonard Fournette. He’s served more of a pass-catcher type running back since entering the league in 2017 and will enter his Jags tenure with 286 career receiving yards. Ogunbowale also has spent time as a special teams returner, with 360 career yards in the category.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers cut a former Badger after he was a team captain a year ago

The string of NFL cuts has been a lengthy one recently with teams trying to get down to a 53-man roster without the luxury of preseason games to see their long shot players get a chance.

With Week 1’s Thursday Night Football now only six days away, the time to trim the rosters is growing shorter and shorter, and teams are having to project their depth charts only based off previous seasons and what they’ve seen in training camp.

Unfortunately for some fringe players, there are still some high-level contributors out there including Jadeveon Clowney, Earl Thomas, Larry Warford, Devonta Freeman and Damon Harrison. Were a team to sign one of those guys it’s likely a player who would’ve made the roster would get waived as a result.

Well, we saw that play out to a tee this week as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed running back Leonard Fournette after he was cut by the Jaguars and consequentially cut former Badger running back AND 2019 Buccaneer team captain Dare Ogunbowale.

Tampa Bay also signed LeSean McCoy this offseason so the running back room was a crowded one and carries would’ve been hard to come by for the former Badger.

Where he left his mark in his two years with the Buccaneers, though, was mostly on special teams, and it must be rare for a player to be cut before the season after being team captain the previous year.

Ogunbowale finishes his Tampa Bay career with 18 games played, 11 rushes, 17 rushing yards and two touchdowns in addition to 35 catches on 46 targets for 286 receiving yards.

The new-look Buccaneers now move forward with Ronald Jones, Fournette and McCoy as their main backfield pieces as head coach Bruce Arians and quarterback Tom Brady look to live up to the preseason hype and make a deep run in the playoffs.

If you ask me, Ogunbowale will not have trouble finding another NFL home as every team could use a special teams ace and running back who can pass protect and catch the football. Maybe the situation in Tampa Bay wasn’t ideal for him, but don’t expect this to be the last we hear of the former Badger running back.

How the results of the draft affect former Badgers in the NFL

[lawrence-newsletter]

Much has been written about the five former Badgers that made it to the NFL last week–Jonathan Taylor, Zack Baun, Tyler Biadasz, Quintez Cephus and Chris Orr–and how their draft slot and landing spot affects their NFL future.

What hasn’t been nearly as documented is what effect the draft had on former Badgers already in the NFL, especially the ones who may have already been in a position where they needed to battle for a role on the team.

Now, a team using its 5th and 6th round picks on a player at the same position of a Wisconsin product doesn’t necessarily mean that player will soon be out of the door.

Once it becomes a high selection, though, is when the veterans in the league are sometimes cast aside in favor of the younger, cheaper option at the position.

Here’s how the 2020 NFL Draft affects the jobs and playing time of former Badgers already in the NFL.

T.J. Edwards (Philadelphia Eagles)

NFL: Philadelphia Eagles at Buffalo Bills

Edwards surprised many in Philadelphia as he finished the 2019 season as a starter at middle linebacker after making the team as an undrafted free agent.

Joining the starting rotation with low expectations after injuries to Kamu Grugier-Hill and Nigel Bradham, Edwards actually became the team’s best at the position and finished the season with a ProFootballFocus grade of 86.6.

During the NFL Draft, though, the Eagles used their third round pick on Colorado linebacker Davion Taylor, the highest the team has drafted a linebacker since 2015.

While it will take a year or two for Taylor to gain experience and learn the position–as he didn’t play in games until he reached college–and it may still be him and Edwards as the two starters, the Eagles brought in competition at the position and clearly view it as a need for the team going forward.

Edwards’ job isn’t in jeopardy with this move, but it adds competition to the room as Edwards tries to continue to prove wrong the teams that didn’t take a chance on him during the draft.

[lawrence-newsletter]

Dare Ogunbowale’s Wisconsin career is one of the most unorthodox I’ve seen in years following the Badgers.

The Milwaukee native arrived on campus in 2012 and walked-on to the team as a defensive back and special teamer. Yes, he began his career at cornerback.

Ogunbowale red-shirted his first year in Paul Chryst’s program and went on to play in only two games at defensive back his freshman season in 2013, appearances during which he only recorded two tackles.

Two weeks into his sophomore season in 2014 Ogunbowale made the switch from defensive back to backup running back while still holding his position as one of the team’s leaders on special teams. This position change then went on to completely alter his football career.

The former Badger finished his sophomore year with nine stops on special teams (good for second-best on the team), 34 rushing attempts, 193 yards, a yards-per-carry clip of 5.7 and one touchdown.

Ogunbowale was then given a scholarship before the 2015 season and an increased role in Paul Chryst’s offense, one which was aided by starter Corey Clement battling injuries throughout the season.

His increased role and growing experience at the running back position led Ogunbowale to finish his junior campaign with 194 carries, 819 yards and seven touchdowns to go along with 36 receptions for 299 yards and one receiving touchdown.

As a senior the Marquette University High School product was named one of the team’s captains and played in all 14 contests, recording 91 rushing attempts, 506 yards and five touchdowns in addition to 24 receptions, 208 receiving yards and one touchdown through the air.

Ogunbowale finished his college career with 319 rushing attempts, 1518 yards, 4.8 yards-per-carry and 13 touchdowns in addition to 60 receptions, 507 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns. And, when it was all said and done, he was part of the most successful senior class in program history.

This production paired with his success on special teams led the running back to be invited to the 2017 NFL Combine.

Despite the combine invite Ogunbowale went undrafted during the 2017 NFL Draft and was first signed as an un-drafted free agent by the Houston Texans. He then was cut by the Texans in October of 2017, signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in November, was released again in December, signed with Washington Redskins later that month, was released again in March of 2018 and, finally, was signed again by the Buccaneers in August before the 2018 season began.

After spending a full year trying to find a permanent home and another year trying to find playing time, Ogunbowale finally broke through this past season for the Bucs and finished the campaign with 16 games played, 11 carries, 17 yards and two touchdowns to go along with 35 receptions, 286 receiving yards and a clip of 8.2 yards-per-reception.

Most notably the former Badger was named special teams captain for Head Coach Bruce Arians‘ unit and found a starting role as a kick returner and special teams ace.

Ogunbowale is currently listed as the Buccaneers backup running back going into the 2020 season and is expected to continue to have a significant role for the team both offensively and on special teams.

Watch: Dare Ogunbowale won’t let quarantine stop him from jamming

Take a look at Buccaneers running back Dare Ogunbowale playing the piano while practicing social distancing.

Like most of us, Buccaneers players are practicing social distancing in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Some are playing board games to pass the time, while others are doing a little work around the property.

For running back Dare Ogunbowale, it means playing the piano. Take a look at this video he posted on Twitter recently.

Fantastic.

With T.J. Logan out with a broken thumb, who will return kicks for the Bucs?

Find out who the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will turn to on kickoff and punt returns following the injury to T.J. Logan.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers caught a tough break yesterday (no pun intended) when running back and return man T.J. Logan broke his thumb, ending his 2019 season.

Logan had been returning kicks for the Bucs this season and took over punt return duties, too, following Tampa Bay’s Week 6 loss to the Carolina Panthers, in which then-punt returner Bobo Wilson fumbled the ball twice, losing one.

With Logan out, the Bucs will turn to wide receiver Justin Watson on punt returns and running back Dare Ogunbowale on kickoff returns.

Tampa Bay has also ruled out the below four players for Sunday’s Week 14 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts.

Tampa Bay is riding their first winning-streak of the season entering Sunday. With convincing wins over the Atlanta Falcons and Jacksonville Jaguars the last two weeks, the Bucs sit at 5-7, and with a win will avoid their third-straight 5-11 season.

Talk about motivation to win.
