Since being drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Boise State, McNichols has bounced around the NFL, including previously spending time with the 49ers in 2017.

McNichols has also had sports with the Indianapolis Colts, Denver Broncos, Tennessee Titans, Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons and Pittsburgh Steelers. After spending only a week with the Steelers last season, McNichols landed on the injury reserve with a should injury.

McNichols was recently signed by the Niners during training camp, but was waived in late August.

Badger Countdown: Tight end reels in 135 catches over UW career

The CFB season is around the corner and the Badgers are now 35 days away from their 2023 opener versus Buffalo on Sept. 2 at Camp Randall.

The college football season is around the corner and the Badgers are now 35 days away from their 2023 opener versus Buffalo on Sept. 2 at home. A former Wisconsin tight end caught 135 passes during his time in Madison.

Troy Fumagalli was a member of the Badgers from 2014-2017, becoming a top pass-catcher with the squad over his collegiate career. He was immediately an active player as a freshman, catching 14 passes for 187 yards over 13 games that year.

In total, in his four campaigns with Wisconsin, Fumagalli turned his 135 catches into 1,627 yards and seven scores. The receptions rank ninth all-time in Badger history.

The tight end went on to selected in the fifth round (156th overall) by the Denver Broncos in the 2018 NFL Draft and he’s currently a member of the San Francisco 49ers’ organization.

Ex-Broncos QB finds home in free agency; roster cuts on deck for Denver

If our UDFA tracker is accurate, the Broncos will have to make five roster cuts to make room for the new rookie signings.

Two former Denver Broncos players signed with the San Francisco 49ers on Monday.

The Niners signed quarterback Brandon Allen and tight end Troy Fumagalli, the team announced. Allen started three games for the Broncos in 2019, posting one win and two losses. He then served as a backup with the Cincinnati Bengals from 2020-2022.

Fumagalli was drafted by Denver in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL draft out of Wisconsin. He started five games in 2019 but battled injuries through two different stints with the Broncos (2018-2019; 2020). He spent time with the Houston Texans in 2020 and has had brief stints with the New England Patriots and 49ers since then.

Meanwhile, back in Denver, the Broncos are yet to officially announce their expected 17 undrafted free agent signings. After the draft, Denver had room to sign 12 UDFAs, so if our signing tracker is accurate, the Broncos will have to cut five players to make room for the new UDFAs.

With rookie minicamp set to begin on Friday, Denver will likely officially announce the UDFAs and corresponding roster moves this week. The Broncos will also likely announce rookie jersey numbers this week (the club previously announced numbers for veteran additions last week).

In addition to UDFA signings, roster cuts and jersey number news, Denver is also expected to have its 2023 schedule announced later this week. Stay tuned.

Former and current Badgers react to reports of Luke Fickell being named Wisconsin’s head coach

Former and current Wisconsin players react to the reports of Luke Fickell being named as Wisconsin’s next head coach:

Early on Sunday afternoon, Wisconsin State Journal writer, Tom Oates, first reported that the Wisconsin Badgers intend to make Cincinnati head coach Luke Fickell their next head coach.

The news came as a surprise to Wisconsin players and fans who have been thinking interim head coach Jim Leonhard would likely take over the position permanently. Several current players have already offered their reaction to the news, while many former Badgers have also given their assessment on this potential move for the program.

It will be interesting to see what Fickell can bring to Wisconsin from the Bearcats, with whom he went 58-17 and led to a College Football Playoff appearance last season.

Below are the Twitter reactions of current and former Badgers players:

49ers shuffle practice squad after George Kittle groin injury

The 49ers shuffled up their practice squad on Wednesday.

The 49ers on Wednesday announced a couple of practice squad moves ahead of the start of their Week 1 on-field preparations. San Francisco added tight end Troy Fumagalli and wide receiver Connor Wedington to their practice squad, and released veteran WR Willie Snead IV in a corresponding move.

Fumagalli spent the preseason with the 49ers and gives them some in-house depth if they need it with George Kittle working through a groin injury that forced him to sit out Wednesday’s practice. San Francisco released Fumagalli at final roster cuts. He originally signed with the 49ers in May. In 19 career games with the Broncos and Patriots he has 14 catches for 118 yards and two touchdowns.

Wedington spent part of last season with the 49ers practice squad and signed a futures deal in late January. San Francisco waived him and he was quickly claimed by the Texans where he spent the offseason. He was an undrafted rookie with the Seahawks last year and hasn’t played in a regular season game.

The 49ers had to release Snead to stay at the 16-player practice squad threshold. They technically carry 17 on the practice squad roster though since offensive lineman Alfredo Gutierrez is exempt because he came to San Francisco via the NFL’s international pathway program. They now have a full practice squad roster and any new additions will need to come with a corresponding move.

49ers roster moves: TE Troy Fumagalli signs 1-year deal

The #49ers switched up their TE depth by adding a veteran with a legitimate shot to make the roster.

The 49ers on Tuesday announced the addition of veteran tight end Troy Fumagalli, and the release of undrafted rookie Garrett Walston in a corresponding move.

Fumagalli was a fifth-round pick of the Broncos in 2018 and spent his rookie year on Injured Reserve. He returned to play 11 games in 2019 and posted six catches for 38 yards and one touchdown. In 2020 he spent time on the Texans practice squad before rejoining the Broncos, where he played in eight games and caught eight balls for 80 yards and one touchdown.

Last season Fumagalli signed with the Patriots, but spent the year on IR.

While he’s primarily been a blocking tight end in the NFL, he put up big receiving numbers in college at Wisconsin. In four years with the Badgers he posted 135 receptions, 1,627 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. He’ll have a legitimate shot to make the 49ers’ roster if he proves to be an effective blocker since their depth at the position isn’t great.

Walston signed with San Francisco after the draft. He attended the University of North Carolina and hauled in 47 catches for 534 yards and five touchdowns across four seasons.

Former Wisconsin tight end signs with the New England Patriots

New England Patriots signed former Wisconsin tight end Troy Fumagalli Thursday, according to a report from Jim McBride of the Boston Globe.

The New England Patriots signed former Wisconsin tight end Troy Fumagalli Thursday morning, according to a report from Jim McBride of the Boston Globe.

The Patriots are Fumagalli’s second NFL team. He was a fifth-round pick in 2018 by the Denver Broncos and played 19 games for the team.

The former Badger joins a tight end rotation in New England highlighted by Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry, a rotation that will be tough to crack for an inexperienced tight end such as Fumagalli.

Bill Belichick is the best in the business at finding talent from other NFL teams, though, so this signing may be what the former Badger needs to jumpstart his NFL career.

The Patriots release FB Dan Vitale, sign TE Troy Fumagalli

Another COVID-19 opt-out who is off the team.

The New England Patriots have signed tight end Troy Fumagalli and released fullback Dan Vitale, according to multiple reports.

The Denver Broncos drafted Fumagalli in the fifth round in 2018. During the 2020 season, Denver cut Fumagalli, who then bounced from the Houston Texans back to the Broncos on the practice squad. He has 14 career catches for 118 yards and two touchdowns.

Vitale, 27, was one of the Patriots’ eight COVID-19 opt-outs. He is also one of five of those opt-outs who are no longer with the team. He signed with New England during the 2020 offseason on a one-year, $1.3 million contract. He has played for the Green Bay Packers, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Cleveland Browns during his NFL career.

Former Badger tight end signs with the Texans’ practice squad

With the NFL season now through Week 1 teams are looking at their depth charts going forward and preparing their rosters for the event of injuries at key positions.

Who this affects the most are current practice squad players or those looking for a job, as new rules in the league this year give teams more leniency with their active rosters and calling up players from their reserves.

So, yesterday the long list of transactions involving Wisconsin products got a little longer as the Houston Texans signed former Badger tight end Troy Fumagalli to their practice squad.

Fumagalli played his first NFL season in Denver where he played in 11 games before being cut by the team before the start of this season.
