How Larry Ogunjobi can solve the Steelers’ defensive line issues

Here’s why the Steelers’ signing of Larry Ogunjobi could make all the difference in their defense.

It’s not that the Pittsburgh Steelers have massive issues along their defensive line. When you have T.J. Watt blowing tackles up from outside, and Cameron Heyward blowing everyone up from everywhere, that’s a pretty good place to start. But Pittsburgh did fall from second in the NFL in Football Outsiders’ Defensive Adjusted Line Yards metric in 2020 to 19th in 2021. A primary reason for that drop was the absence of defensive tackle Stephon Tuitt, who played very well in 2020, and missed the entire 2021 season. Tuitt left the team after his brother was struck and killed by a car during OTAs, and a knee injury complicated the picture. Tuitt announced his retirement from the NFL on June 1.

Pittsburgh selected Texas A&M defensive tackle DeMarvin Leal in the third round of the 2022 draft, but Leal is a smaller (6-foot-4, 283 pounds) player than the 6-foot-6, 303-pound Tuitt, and there’s no guarantee that Leal will come in and have the same kind of impact Tuitt did in 2020, when he totaled 12 sacks, 71 total pressures, and 31 stops.

Which is why the Steelers signed former Browns and Bengals defensive lineman Larry Ogunjobi on Monday. Selected in the third round of the 2017 draft out of Charlotte, spent four seasons in Cleveland, and signed a one-year deal with Cincinnati last year. Ogunjobi’s 2021 season, which saw him tally eight sacks, 41 total pressures, and 31 stops, was his best campaign to date, and the Steelers have certainly seen enough of him in the AFC North to make this one-year deal automatic.

Pittsburgh tried to piece their interior defensive line together last season with Heyward, Montravius Adams, Chris Wormley, and a cast of guys, but it wasn’t the same without Tuitt — especially late in the season, when Heyward had to put forth a superhuman effort on every down just to get disruption. With Ogunjobi on board, that won’t be a problem anymore. Heyward is going to get most of the double-teams inside, and Ogunjobi has what it takes to make that a real issue for opposing offensive lines. On this sack of Drew Lock in Week 15, Ogunjobi (No. 65) rode left guard Dalton Risner’s outside shoulder to the pocket, and Risner never stood a chance.

And if Pittsburgh’s defensive staff wants to put Heyward and Ogunjobi stacked to the center to make those protection calls a bit tougher, as the Bengals did on this play against the Vikings in Week 1 with Ogunjobi and D.J. Reader, you might wind up with a tackle for loss like this, with Ogunjobi knifing through the double. An unpleasant experience for Dalvin Cook.

Having Ogunjobi on the field gives Heyward room to operate, gives Leal time to develop, and adds an excellent disruptor to a defense that will have to be top-tier if the Steelers are to make their postseason aspirations real in 2022.

Donald, 31, had 12.5 sacks during the 2021 NFL season, then logged 3.5 more in the playoffs during the Rams’ run to the Super Bowl, including the game clincher on the Bengals Joe Burrow.

In eight seasons, Donald has 98 sacks, eight Pro Bowl selections, and seven All-Pro selections as well.

With the future Hall of Famer continuing his career, here are the ten highest-paid defensive tackles in the NFL.

Former Ohio State defensive lineman Cam Heyward takes home ‘Good Guy Award’

Well done Cam!

Former Ohio State and current Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman Cam Heyward has done plenty on the field to make a name for himself, but he’s also known as one of the best guys off the field.

Case in point, Heyward took home the Pro Football Writers of America’s Good Guy Award, over the weekend. The award is handed out annually to an NFL player who is judged to best assist the media by displaying professionalism and willingness to answer questions.

Anyone that’s dealt with Heyward in the media can attest to him being very deserving of the award. And, it’s not the first award he was nominated for when it comes to character. He was also nominated for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award because of all that he does in the community.

Well done Cam, way to represent yourself well and be a great ambassador for Ohio State football.

Two former Ohio State defenders named to PFWA’s All-NFL team

Ohio State is just one of four programs with former players making the PFWA’s All-NFL team for 2021-2022.

On Monday, two former Ohio State defensive linemen were named to the Pro Football Writers Associations All-NFL team. Both the San Francisco 49ers Nick Bosa and Cameron Heyward of the Pittsburgh Steelers were among 36 players that received the honor.

For Bosa, he should be on the shortlist for Comeback Player of the Year after tearing his ACL last season and coming back arguably as strong as ever. He has totaled 58 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, and 18 sacks on the way to leading the San Francisco 49ers to the NFC Championship Game. He’ll get a chance to appear in his second Super Bowl in three years if the ‘Niners can beat the Los Angeles Rams this weekend.

Heyward has been one of the most productive defensive tackles over the last decade in the NFL, carving out quite the career. He finished the season with a whopping 93 total tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, and an interception.

It’s the first time Bosa has been selected to the All-NFL team, and the second for Cameron Heyward. Ohio State was just one of four college programs with two players named to the team joining Oklahoma, Texas, and Wisconsin.

Buckeyes in the NFL: Notable former Ohio State football players Week 16 defensive performances

Buckeyes in the NFL: Notable former Ohio State football players Week 16 defensive performances #GoBucks

It is finally game week for the Ohio State Buckeyes as they are set to take on the Utah Utes on Saturday in the Rose Bowl. The game will no doubt be bitter-sweet as playing in the Rose Bowl is still a great honor, but at the end of the day, Ohio State is not in the CFP. Right or wrong, that’s the measuring stick these days on the banks of the Olentangy.

Despite all of the excitement surrounding the Rose Bowl, we are here to discuss former Buckeye legends and their careers in the NFL. The following is a breakdown of how these former Ohio State defensive stars played in the NFL this week.

Six former Ohio State players make NFL Pro Bowl rosters

Six former Ohio State players have been named to Pro-Bowl rosters for 2022. Who are they? #GoBucks

The football season is beginning to wind down. The college football bowl season is upon us, and NFL teams are duking it out for a playoff spot with just three weeks remaining in the regular season. That means it’s also time for all the Pro-Bowl shenanigans to start to take shape, and that’s exactly what we have for you.

On Wednesday, Pro-Bowl rosters were announced, and there are six former Buckeyes that will be playing a little exhibition All-Star game inside Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on February 6.

And yeah, once again, the Pro Bowl coincides with the off week in-between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl, so surely some of the players hope they will be skipping all the festivities and preparing for a bigger game in Inglewood, California.

But we digress and get back to the former Ohio State players that made AFC and NFC rosters for the Pro-Bowl 2022.

FIRST … AFC Pro-Bowl Buckeyes

We have reached the end of the college football regular season and we are now sitting and waiting patiently for the Ohio State Buckeyes to take on the Utah Utes in the Rose Bowl. Until then, we have a wide variety of bowl games to watch as well, and still includes the NFL.

We love looking back on former Ohio State legends and taking a dive into how they have been performing in the pro ranks. The list of Buckeye alumni in the NFL is so large we need to split up the list into two with this one focusing on the defense.

What Steelers are saying about Titans ahead of Week 15 game

Steelers DL Cameron Heyward on Titans QB Ryan Tannehill: “He is very dynamic. We have to be very alert in the red zone game and do a good job of keeping him in the pocket.”

The Tennessee Titans (9-4) will travel to Heinz Field in Week 15 to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers (6-6-1), a team looking to keep its already shaky playoff hopes alive.

These two teams last met in 2020 in a game that was postponed and rescheduled due to the Titans’ COVID-19 outbreak. Pittsburgh would eventually secure the victory over Tennessee in Week 7, 27-24.

One of the more notable quotes of the week came from Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, who expressed regret for not drafting Titans safety, Kevin Byard, who has become one of the best at his position in the NFL.

“Can’t say enough about [Byard] at safety. He was a ball guy when he came out of [Middle Tennessee State]. I kicked myself often. When you think about a guy like him that’s played the way he’s played since he’s been in the league. He was a non-combine invite with 19 career interceptions at Middle Tennessee. I know better. A guy that has double-digit interceptions in college, usually the ball is not hitting him in the face. They have some skills that are displayed. They’re going to get it.”

Let’s see what else the Steelers had to say about the Titans during the week leading up to their game on Sunday.

The only FBS college football game that was completed this weekend was the Army-Navy game and although that was a fantastic game, it was no what most Ohio State fans desire on their fall Saturdays.

The lack of Buckeye football forces us to focus even more on the NFL and watch former Ohio State legends strive for greatness at the professional level.

Most fans are probably aware of the Urban Meyer drama saga building in Jacksonville, but we try and keep things positive on this piece. The list of former Buckeyes in the NFL is so large, we have broken down the lists into two, with this one focusing on the defense.

Seahawks vs. Steelers: 6 key matchups to watch on Sunday Night Football

Odds are that Seattle will need to beat Pittsburgh in several key areas of the game to keep this one close.

Next up on the schedule the Seattle Seahawks play their second of three consecutive prime time games, visiting the Pittsburgh Steelers for an important interconference showdown on Sunday Night Football.

Even though the Steelers have the same 2-3 record as the Seahawks heading into the weekend, with starting QB Russell Wilson out this team’s margins for error will be extremely slim – especially in a hostile environment. Odds are that Seattle will need to beat Pittsburgh in several key areas of the game to keep this one close. With that in mind, here are six matchups that will help decide the outcome.
