Available free agent pass rushers for the Broncos in 2024

The Broncos need more from their pass rush in 2024. Here are some edge defenders they could target during free agency.

The Denver Broncos need to get more from their pass rush in 2024. Jonathon Cooper led the team with 8.5 sacks last season, followed by Nik Bonitto (8.0 sacks). Those are fine numbers for rotational players, but Denver needs an elite edge defender.

Baron Browning has the potential to emerge as a top pass rusher in 2024, but injuries have prevented him from having a breakout season thus far. The Broncos will likely look to add reinforcements to the outside linebacker room this spring, so we’ve put together a quick list of 16 pass rushers the team could consider during NFL free agency next week.

10 Broncos players who deserve contract extensions

These 10 players are scheduled to become free agents in 2025. The Broncos should consider re-signing them before they hit the open market.

With NFL free agency just over one week away, the Denver Broncos are about $14 million over the salary cap. Denver will need to make some roster moves and restructure a few contracts to get under the cap and create enough room to re-sign some of the team’s key in-house free agents.

Before anything else, the Broncos will worry about their in-house players and then pending free agents from other teams. The bulk of the league’s big signings will happen within the first wave of free agency, then things will then start to slow down.

Denver probably won’t have a lot of cap space to work with, so the team’s signings will be calculated, and perhaps minimal. Once the Broncos have wrapped up the bulk of their 2024 signings, attention will turn to potential extensions for players set to become free agents in 2025.

There’s always something on deck in the NFL.

Here’s a quick look ahead to 10 Denver players scheduled to become free agents in 2025 who deserve contract extensions from the Broncos.

Broncos’ sack leaders from 2023 season

Jonathon Cooper (8.5) led the Broncos in sacks in 2023, followed by Nik Bonitto (8.0) and Zach Allen (5.0).

The days of Von Miller recording double-digit sacks seem like a distant memory for Denver Broncos fans.

The Broncos are going to need more from their pass rush in 2024 after an underwhelming campaign from Baron Browning, Jonathon Cooper and Nik Bonitto last fall.

In terms of sacks, Denver’s third-best pass rusher this season was Zach Allen, an interior defensive lineman who recorded five sacks in 2023. That’s a good total for a defensive tackle, but the fact that the Broncos did not have a third edge defender with five or more sacks is alarming.

Consequently, bringing in a top pass rusher should be a priority for Denver this offseason. Before free agency and the draft arrive, here’s a quick look back at the Broncos’ leaders in sacks from the 2023 season.

Broncos need more from their pass rush in 2024

The Broncos did not have any players with double-digit sacks in 2024 and the defense ranked 22nd out of 32 teams with 42 total sacks.

The Denver Broncos totaled 42 sacks in 2023, tied for the 11th-lowest total in the NFL, and the worst total in the AFC West. Elsewhere in the division, the Las Vegas Raiders (46 sacks), Los Angeles Chargers (48 sacks) and Kansas City Chiefs (57 sacks) got more production from their pass rushers.

The Broncos will need more from their edge defenders in 2024. Part of the problem in 2023 was leaning on Randy Gregory and Frank Clark early in the year. Both players were off the team by mid-season.

Another hindrance was Baron Browning’s meniscus tear that sidelined him for the first six games of the campaign. After he returned from that injury, Browning had modest production, totaling 4.5 sacks in 10 games.

Jonathon Cooper (8.5 sacks) and Nik Bonitto (8.0 sacks) were the team’s most productive pass rushers in 2023, but both of them might be better suited for a rotational rusher role instead of a regular starting gig.

If Browning is able to reach his potential in 2024, Denver could pair him with a high-profile pass rusher. Cooper and Bonitto would be excellent rotation options in such a scenario. If Browning never turns into the kind of pass rusher the Broncos hope he can be, Denver will eventually need two starting-caliber edge defenders.

The Broncos are set to select 12th overall in the 2024 NFL draft and that might be an ideal place to land a top pass rusher. Recent mock drafts have Denver landing Laiatu Latu, Jared Verse and Chop Robinson at that spot. Whether it’s one of those options or another prospect, the Broncos would be wise to bring in a high-profile pass rusher in 2024.

Fans might be able to buy stock in Baron Browning in the near future

Football fans earning dividends from Baron Browning’s income? It’s in the works.

Denver Broncos fans — and anyone else interested — might soon be able to buy shares in outside linebacker Baron Browning.

Vestible Inc., if approved, plans to launch an “investment platform that will allow fans to buy and sell shares in future income streams of collegiate and professional athletes,” according to Arnie Stapleton of the Associated Press.

If the IPO becomes official, the company says 1% of Browning’s monthly income will go to investors as dividends.

“It’s cool to think I’m going to have my own stock,” Browning told Stapleton. “I know being an NFL player brings different opportunities, but I never would have guessed this would be one of them.”

Browning, 24, will have a base salary just north of $1.2 million in 2024 before seeking a big contract as a free agent in 2025.

Fantex — a now-defunct brand acquisition, marketing and development company — started a similar operation in 2013 before later closing its platform to individual investors in 2016.

Former NFL tight end Vernon Davis, playing for the San Francisco 49ers at the time, was Fantex’s first “Brand” athlete. Davis, who later won Super Bowl 50 with the Broncos, had stock offerings valued at $10 a share. It remains to be seen what valuation will be given to Browning’s shares.

LB Baron Browning not fined for hit on Browns QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson

No fines were issued by the NFL for the hit…

The Cleveland Browns are currently set to start veteran Joe Flacco against the Los Angeles Rams fresh off of the practice squad. This is due to a hit from linebacker Baron Browning that left quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson in the concussion protocol in the Browns’ loss to the Denver Broncos a week ago.

However, the NFL did not find the hit, which was flagged as a late hit on Browning, warranted a fine for the Denver linebacker. The Ohio State product left the game unscathed in terms of health and of his checkbook.

This has now caused the Browns to start their fourth quarterback of the season this week in Los Angeles. If the Browns can find a way to sneak out a win against the Rams with Flacco at the helm, they will become the first team since 2015 to rack up notches in the win column with four different quarterbacks under center in the same season.

Sean Payton shrugs off roughing the passer penalty on Baron Browning

Sean Payton when asked about Baron Browning’s penalty: “Those guys worked hard, the officiating crew. They’re tasked with a difficult job.”

Late in the third quarter of Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns, Denver Broncos outside linebacker Baron Browning hit quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson just as the ball was released on an incomplete pass that would have resulted in 4th-and-12 if not for a late flag.

Officials deemed the hit roughing the passer and penalized Browning, resulting in a first down for the Browns. It was a brutal hit that knocked DTR out of the game with a head injury, but many fans viewed it as a legal play.

After the game, Broncos coach Sean Payton downplayed the controversial call by sidestepping a question about it.

“Those guys worked hard — the officiating crew,” Payton said after an eventual 29-12 win. “They’re tasked with a difficult job. Some of those calls are difficult to make. They have a challenge — they happen so quickly. They had good dialogue.

“[I’ve] worked with a bunch of those guys over the years. I felt like it was good communication. That’s kind of where it was at. It kind of goes back and forth — you get some, sometimes you don’t. They did a good job of communicating everything.”

Payton’s diplomatic answer might not have been so diplomatic if the Browns came back to win. Browning didn’t have much to say about the penalty after the game.

“I didn’t think it was a dirty hit, but they called it,” Browning said. “So what can I do about it?”

Fortunately, Denver’s defense recovered a fumble two plays after the penalty.

“I think it just shows our demeanor and attitude,” Browning said. “We can’t control everything, but what we can control is our response. We responded and got a turnover.”

Twitter/X had mixed reactions to the penalty on Sunday.

Broncos injury report: All players cleared for ‘Monday Night Football’

Every player on the Broncos’ 53-man roster is healthy going into Monday’s showdown with the Bills.

The Denver Broncos are in exceptional health coming out of their bye week.

Only two players — outside linebacker Baron Browning (wrist) and guard Ben Powers (ankle) — were listed on the injury report this week, and they both fully participated in all three days of practice.

The Broncos released a final injury report with game statuses on Saturday, and Browning and Powers were given no injury designation, clearing them to play against the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football.

Denver does have eight players on injured reserve — including wide receiver Tim Patrick, cornerback K’Waun Williams, safety Caden Sterns, linebacker Jonas Griffith and tight end Greg Dulcich — but all 53 players on the active roster are healthy going into Week 10.

The Broncos would love to maintain that level of health in the second half of the 2023 season. After a brutal year of injuries in 2022, Denver is in good shape mid-way through the 2023 campaign.
