Falcons defensive lineman Tommy Togiai to wear No. 62

Falcons DL Tommy Togiai has been assigned his new jersey number. The former 4th-round pick will wear the No. 62 in Atlanta

The Atlanta Falcons signed defensive lineman Tommy Togiai off of the Cleveland Browns practice squad on Tuesday. Togiai, who was selected in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL draft out of Ohio State, is a nice depth addition to Atlanta’s banged-up defensive line.

The 24-year-old has been assigned his Falcons jersey number. Togiai was spotted wearing the No. 62 at Wednesday’s practice, per team reporter Terrin Waack.

The Falcons practiced on Wednesday without starting defensive lineman David Onyemata, whose status for Week 16 could be in jeopardy if he doesn’t return to practice soon.

Make sure to check out the team’s latest injury report and updated 53-man roster arranged by jersey number heading into Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts.

DT Tommy Togiai poached off of Browns’ practice squad, signed by Falcons

The Browns have lost a practice squad defensive tackle

The Cleveland Browns signed a new defensive tackle to their practice squad yesterday, inking Chris Williams to a deal. And that may have been because they lost one of their practice squad as well. The Atlanta Falcons have signed Tommy Togiai to their active roster off of Cleveland’s practice squad.

Togiai, a fourth round pick of the Browns back in 2021, saw significant time on the field over the past two seasons but did not make the 53-man roster this year after Cleveland upgraded their defensive line. He then signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars’ practice squad but was soon released by them. Togiai then returned to Cleveland where he has been on the practice squad all year.

He has not been elevated on a gameday this season, so joining Atlanta for the rest of the year will be his first taste of regular season football in 2023. Best of luck to Togiai as he gets an opportunity on the Falcons’ 53-man roster.

Falcons sign DL Tommy Togiai off Browns’ practice squad

The Falcons have signed defensive lineman Tommy Togiai off the Browns’ practice squad, NFL Network reported on Tuesday

The Atlanta Falcons released defensive lineman Travis Bell on Tuesday and it didn’t take long for the team to find a replacement. According to Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network, the Falcons have signed defensive lineman Tommy Togiai off the Browns’ practice squad.

Togiai, 24, was selected in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL draft out of Ohio State. Over his first two NFL seasons in Cleveland, the former Buckeyes defensive lineman appeared in 18 games with two starts, racking up 29 tackles (12 solo), three QB hits, one sack and one pass defended.

Togiai has not appeared in a game this season, instead spending the year on Cleveland’s practice squad. Watch as Togiai records a sack against Philadelphia in the preseason below.

Browns make flurry of roster moves as OT Jack Conklin goes on IR

With Jack Conklin officially on Injured Reserve, the Browns made a flurry of moves to adjust their roster.

Despite their dominant win against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, Week 1 was not all good news for the Cleveland Browns. Veteran offensive tackle Jack Conklin suffered another season-ending injury, this time tearing both his ACL and MCL after just signing a contract extension last season. He has officially been placed on Injured Reserve as the Browns have signed fan favorite offensive guard Michael Dunn off of the practice squad to fill his roster spot on the 53-man roster.

That was not the only move the Browns made, however, as they then had Dunn’s practice squad spot to fill. They then made an additional practice squad move as well, so they had to clear another spot on the reserves. It was a busy day in Berea.

Here are all of the moves the Browns made to their roster today, as it was a domino effect after they ended Conklin’s season and placed him on IR.

DT Tommy Togiai opts for Jaguars over returning to Browns

The Browns parted ways with defensive tackle Tommy Togiai, but wanted him back on the practice squad. He signed with the Jaguars instead.

After two disappointing seasons in Northeast Ohio, the Cleveland Browns cut 2021 NFL draft fourth rounder Tommy Togiai after overhauling their defensive interior. The rumor was, however, that the Browns wanted to get Togiai back on their practice squad once he cleared waivers. Togiai had other plans as he instead signed to the practice squad of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In Jacksonville, Togiai will reunite with his teammate at Ohio State, Davon Hamilton, who just received a massive payday from the Jaguars this past offseason. The Browns were able to retain former second round defensive tackle Trysten Hill to their practice squad despite losing Togiai to Jacksonville.

Togiai is the second young player who went elsewhere to land on a practice squad, as second-year kicker Cade York also opted for a fresh start away from the Browns. York signed to the practice squad of the Tennessee Titans despite being pursued to return to Cleveland.

DT Tommy Togiai off the roster after two down years

The former Ohio State defensive tackle will now head to waivers.

After two down seasons with the Cleveland Browns, the 2022 NFL draft fourth rounder will be looking for an opportunity elsewhere. The Browns have cut former Ohio State defensive tackle Tommy Togiai. While he flashed in the preseason this year, Togiai provided nothing on tape to prove he is an NFL-caliber defensive tackle in Cleveland. The Browns are making their way toward 53.

As the Browns overhauled their defensive line with the likes of Dalvin Tomlinson, Shelby Harris, Siaki Ika, and Maurice Hurst, the writing has been on the wall for Togiai. With plenty of opportunity over his first two seasons with the team, he failed to leave a positive mark on the field.

Given his age and familiarity with the team, however, look for Togiai to land on the practice squad if he clears waivers. The Browns are now nearing that 53-man mark after a flurry of cuts today. It is still to be seen if fellow defensive tackle Jordan Elliott will make the team.

Deep dive into the defensive tackle room before cutdowns

Determining who may stay and who may go in the Browns Defensive tackle room.

Before the cutdown day arrives for the Cleveland Browns, I wanted to take a quick look at the defensive tackle room, focusing specifically on the number of snaps the unit will see and how this could affect the building of the defensive tackle room led by free agent signing Dalvin Tomlinson.

The signing of Shelby Harris a fortnight ago filled a large hole for the Browns. The Browns were able to acquire a veteran presence who can be counted on for 500 snaps over the season. This addition can let the Browns be more flexible when filling out the rest of the defensive tackle room. As of late, the Browns have rostered 5 defensive tackles during the season.

The defensive tackles have averaged 2146 snaps over the last three seasons according to Pro Football Reference. The number of snaps has trended down every year, as the Browns prioritize playing three or four defensive ends in obvious passing situations. The Browns will likely use these “NASCAR” packages this season. Za’Darius Smith, the new Browns’ starting defensive end, is one of the most productive pass rushers when lined up over a guard or center. If the Browns remain reliant on defensive ends instead of defensive tackles, then the room should see a snap count under 2100 snaps. This could lead to the Browns only carrying four defensive tackles into the season.

Andrew Berry rostered four defensive tackles in his first year. The 2020 defensive tackle room consisted of Sheldon Richardson, Larry Ogunjobi, Jordan Elliott, and Vincent Taylor. The group played 2,261 snaps, a team-high over the past three years. That was clearly too high of a workload for the group as the Browns have reduced the total amount of snaps while adding players to alleviate fatigue. Andrew Berry could roster only four defensive tackles again if the snap count and workload can be managed appropriately. This is how I see the defensive tackle room shaking out under that assumption. I included the amount of snaps played by each defensive tackle over the last three seasons.

Browns announce 7 inactives, Jaelon Darden set to debut vs. Commanders

The Browns have announced their seven inactives as Jaelon Darden is set to make his debut

As the Cleveland Browns and Washington Commanders get set to go to battle on New Year’s Day, the away team has a slight advantage on paper. As the two sides get set for their matchup on the field, however, both teams have announced their inactives for the day. The Browns have announced their seven inactives, but not listed is wide receiver, Jaelon Darden. He is set to make his debut in the brown and orange after being claimed off of waivers a month ago.

Here are the seven inactives who will not dress for the Browns as they look to capture their seventh win on the season.

David Bell out, Jaelon Darden and 5 others listed as inactive vs. Ravens

The Browns have listed wide receivers David Bell and Jaelon Darden among their inactives today against the Ravens.

Dealing with both a toe and thumb injury this week, there was a good chance wide receiver David Bell would not be able to suit up against the Baltimore Ravens. That has now become a reality as he has been listed as inactive, along with fellow wide receiver Jaelon Darden. All-in-all, the Browns again list seven players who will not dress against the Ravens as they look to play spoilers now that their playoff hopes are all but gone.

Here is the full list of those who will not suit up today as the Browns look to get back in the win column against the Ravens.
