Howie Roseman explains why Eagles haven’t extended Zack Baun, other key free agents

Eagles GM Howie Roseman could be looking to stack up on compensatory picks after he explained why the Eagles didn’t hand out contract extensions to key 2025 free agents like Zack Baun, Josh Sweat and others

The Eagles have 19 pending free agents, and with some big names looking to cash in, the Philadelphia defense could look quite different in 2024.

During his Super Bowl opening-night press conference, the Eagles GM provided insight into his thinking, explaining to Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia why he didn’t extend contracts to several key free agents.

“Once you start doing that, it’s almost like, are you picking favorites?” Roseman said. “And the other guys start saying, ‘What about me?’ And they start playing for themselves as opposed to the team.

“Now, we’ve seen that probably costs you money in the long run as you’re doing it. But when you have an opportunity to compete for a championship, it’s worth that sacrifice I think.”

Philadelphia has several critical free agents who probably want to return to the Eagles but could land massive paydays on the open market. Zack Baun, Mekhi Becton, Milton Williams, Josh Sweat, Isaiah Rodgers, and Kenneth Gainwell could land lucrative deals when the new league year begins.

Roseman admitted that he watches Baun and Becton’s price tag grow daily but sacrificed potential long-term deals for a Super Bowl run without distractions.

“I’ll do anything for a championship,” Roseman said. “So if that’s the trade-off and maybe we lose a player, I won’t like that, but I’ll take it.”

The six free agents listed above will all have major suitors on the open market, but if those players depart, the Eagles can land upwards of four compensatory picks.

He has remained a full participant, though, in the entire postseason.

Commanders vs. Eagles: Inactive list for NFC championship game

The inactives are in for the NFC championship game for the Eagles and Commanders.

The Washington Commanders shocked everyone on Saturday by downgrading defensive tackle Daron Payne from questionable to out. Payne broke a finger two weeks ago and was also dealing with a knee injury he suffered last week. Sunday’s NFC championship against the Philadelphia Eagles will only be the second game Payne has ever missed since entering the NFL in 2018.

So, as the Commanders prepare to face the Eagles for the third time this season — this time for a trip to the Super Bowl — Payne’s name headlines Washington’s inactive list alongside guard Sam Cosmi. Cosmi injured his ACL in last week’s win at Detroit and is out for the remainder of the playoffs.

Here are the Commanders’ inactives:

  • 13 WR K.J. Osborn
  • 16 QB Jeff Driskel (Emergency 3rd QB)
  • 24 CB Michael Davis
  • 36 RB Chris Rodriguez Jr.
  • 45 LB Dominique Hampton
  • 76 G Sam Cosmi
  • 94 DT Daron Payne

The Eagles are at full strength for today’s game as center Cam Jurgens, who was a game-time decision with a back injury, is active. Also, quarterback Jalen Hurts and tight end Dallas Goedert, both dealing with injuries, are in the starting lineup.

Here are the Eagles’ inactives:

  • QB Tanner McKee
  • CB Eli Ricks
  • DB Lewis Cine
  • OL Nick Gates
  • OL Darian Kinnard
  • G Trevor Keegan
  • WR Ainias Smith

Cam Jurgens injury updates: Eagles center will be active for NFC title game

Cam Jurgens is dealing with a back injury and will be inactive for the Eagles matchup against the Commanders in the NFC Championship game

We’re now hours from kicking off the NFC Championship game, and Eagles Pro Bowl center Cam Jurgens will be inactive after testing out his injured back.

With Jurgens expected to be ruled out, Tyler Steen will shift to the left guard spot, and Landon Dickerson will start at the center position.

Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert declared he was “good to go.” He was a full participant and has no game status designation for Sunday.

Jurgens, meanwhile, was a limited participant and is questionable for Sunday. Landon Dickerson took reps at center this week in case Jurgens cannot play.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts (knee) was a full participant on Friday and has no game status designation.

The Eagles ruled out two players on Injured Reserve, who have returned to practice – wide receiver Britain Covey (neck) and defensive tackle Byron Young (hamstring).

Covey’s absence means that Cooper DeJean will continue to handle punt returns.

Is Eagles center Cam Jurgens playing today? Injury update for NFC Championship Game

Cam Jurgens is dealing with a back injury and we’re looking at the latest updates ahead of the NFC Championship game

We’re just hours from kicking off the NFC Championship game, and Eagles Pro Bowl center Cam Jurgens will test out his injured back, which will be a game-time decision.

Tight end Dallas Goedert (ankle) and Jurgens (back) returned to practice on Friday.

Goedert declared that he was “good to go.” He was a full participant and has no game status designation for Sunday.

Former Nebraska center listed as questionable for NFC Championship Game

The former Husker center is preparing to face the Washington Commanders on Sunday.

A former Nebraska Cornhusker is listed as questionable heading into this weekend’s NFC Championship Game. Cam Jurgens is dealing with a back injury as the Philadelphia Eagles prepare to face the Washington Commanders this Sunday.

Jurgens has been reliable for the postseason, as he has played offensive snap of the playoffs. If he cannot play this weekend, he would be replaced by Landon Dickerson.

The former Husker has had a stellar season for the Eagles. He started in every game this year and was part of a historic rushing offense with running back Saquon Barkley rushing for over 2,000 yards in the regular season.

He was recruited out of high school as a tight end. The Nebraska native was the sixth overall tight end in the 2018 recruiting class and the top player in his class from the state of Nebraska per the 247Sports Rankings. It was during Scott Frost’s tenure that he switched to the interior offensive line.

The Philadelphia Eagles will host the Washington Commanders this Sunday at 2:00 p.m. CT. The game can be seen on Fox. Find a photo gallery of Cam Jurgens’s career by scrolling below.

Commanders vs. Eagles: Latest injury news for NFC championship

The final injury report contained some good news for the Eagles.

The final injury report for the NFC championship game is out, and it contained positive news for both the Washington Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles.

The only player ruled out for the Commanders is a big one, but it was expected. Starting right guard Sam Cosmi injured his ACL in last week’s win over the Lions and is out for the remainder of the playoffs. Other than Cosmi, three players were listed as questionable:

  • QB Jeff Driskel: Illness
  • DE Javontae Jean-Baptiste: Shoulder
  • DT Daron Payne: Knee/finger

After their win over the Los Angeles Rams, there was plenty of concern for the Eagles regarding quarterback Jalen Hurts and cornerback Quinyon Mitchell. Hurts suffered a knee injury when he was bent back awkwardly after a sack. He practiced this week and downplayed the injury. It does sound like Hurts could wear a brace during the game.

Mitchell injured his shoulder last week and is good to go.

Tight end Dallas Goedert is dealing with an ankle injury, but he said he’ll be on the field Sunday against the Commanders.

Finally, there is Pro Bowl center Cam Jurgens. Jurgens missed some practice time this week due to a back injury, and he is listed as questionable.
