Georgia’s Brock Bowers wins John Mackey Award

Georgia Bulldogs tight end Brock Bowers has won the John Mackey Award over Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer and Iowa tight end Sam LaPorta

Georgia Bulldogs tight end Brock Bowers has won the John Mackey Award. Bowers won the award over Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer and Iowa tight end Sam LaPorta, who were the other finalists for the prestigious award. The John Mackey Award is given annually to the most outstanding tight end in college football.

Colorado State’s Trey McBride won the Mackey award in 2021. Many folks thought that Brock Bowers should have won the award last year as a true freshman.

Brock Bowers has 58 total touches, nine total touchdowns, and 819 total yards this season. Michael Mayer has 67 receptions for 809 receiving yards and nine touchdowns this season. Iowa’s Sam LaPorta has 53 receptions, 601 receiving yards, and one receiving touchdown this year.

Surprisingly, Utah’s Dalton Kincaid was not a finalist for the award. Kincaid won a Pac-12 championship with Utah and totaled 70 receptions for 890 yards and eight touchdowns this season.

Both Mayer and LaPorta were both stars on underperforming offenses. Brock Bowers and Georgia won the SEC championship game and made the College Football Playoff.

Notre Dame’s Michael Mayer was named as the tight end of the week three times. Brock Bowers won tight end of the week once for his performance against South Carolina. Mayer was considered the favorite to win the award, but Bowers winning is not a total shock.

PFF: Georgia football’s Brock Bowers dominant in redzone

No surprise here, Brock Bowers is one of the highest graded redzone TEs since 2018…

Georgia tight end Brock Bowers is coming off the most prolific tight end season in Bulldog history. And that’s as a freshman nonetheless.

Bowers totaled 56 receptions for 882 yards (15.8 avg.) and 14 total touchdowns and earned an absolutely incredible list of awards:

  • All-America First Team – USA Today, ESPN.com, The Athletic
  • All-America Second Team – Associated Press
  • True Freshman All-America – ESPN.com, The Athletic
  • Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award
  • Football Writers Association Freshman of the Year Award
  • Coaches’ SEC Freshman of the Year
  • AP SEC Newcomer of the Year

One of Bowers biggest advantages is in the redzone, where – just like in almost every other aspect of his game – was one of the best pass catchers in the last few seasons.

Florida’s Kyle Pitts and Penn State’s Patt Freiermuth, who are both NFL starters now, were both upperclassmen at the time and Bowers was this good in his first season.

If the Napa, Cal., native can improve with experience, Bowers may go down as one of the best receivers in Georgia and SEC history.

Georgia freshman earns SEC honor for performance vs. Vanderbilt

Georgia football is loaded with freshman talent and it was on display vs. Vandy.

Georgia freshman tight end Brock Bowers is leading the Bulldogs in receiving so far this season. The former four-star prospect had to step in when star tight end Darnell Washington underwent foot surgery in fall camp and has more than impressed through four games.

The Napa, Cal. was named SEC Freshman of the Week for a productive day versus Vanderbilt, racking up four catches for 69 yards and two touchdowns, with another 12 yards and a score on the ground.

Fellow Bulldog Adonai Mitchell won the same award just two weeks ago.

Bowers has 18 receptions for 272 yards and four touchdowns on the year. Georgia needed a playmaker to step up with the large number of injuries to receivers and Bowers has done just that.

Check out Bower’s big day versus the Commodores:

Brock Bowers, Tight End (No. 19):

Class: Freshman

Height: 6-4

Weight: 230 pounds

Hometown: Napa, California

High School: Napa High School

Georgia Bulldogs tight end Brock Bowers committed to the University of Georgia on Aug. 10, 2021. He is talented, but will likely spend much of his year developing in Georgia’s elite tight end room.

Bowers is rated a four-star recruit by the top recruiting sites. He is ranked the No. 105 player and the third-best tight end in the 2021 class.

The former Napa High School star put up incredible numbers as a junior in high school. Bowers is versatile and has a basketball background.

He received over 20 offers from Division I schools, but decided to join Georgia. Bowers has a good combination of size and speed and has the talent to excel at the college level.

The Los Angeles Chargers drafted Georgia tight end Tre’ McKitty this offseason and wide receiver George Pickens injured his ACL in spring practice, but Georgia still looks solid at tight end with Darnell Washington,  John FitzPatrick and LSU transfer Arik Gilbert.

Bowers comes from a very athletic family. His father played football for Utah State and his sister plays softball for Sacramento State.
