2024 NFL Draft Scouting Report: TE Brock Bowers, Georgia

This rare talent at the position is poised for Year 1 contributions.

The first player in NCAA history to win the John Mackey Award in consecutive years as the nation’s best tight end, Brock Bowers leaves Georgia for the 2024 NFL Draft as the consensus No. 1 player at his position.

He was extremely versatile in high school by playing quarterback, tight end and linebacker, which helped lead to Bowers being a four-star recruit from the three major prep evaluation services.

He would get recognized for being the top freshman in the country and SEC Freshman of the Year. Bowers scored a Georgia record 13 aerial touchdowns in 15 appearances, and the Associated Press named him to the Second-Team All-American roster. He also was a First-Team All-SEC selection. This is all the more impressive given the pandemic canceled his high school senior season.

Over the next two years, while Bowers managed a respectable 13 combined receiving TDs, he also tacked on four rushing scores. He once again earned the AP and SEC honors in both seasons, going from second-team to first as an All-American in 2023, despite missing four games.

Pros

  • Absurd movement skills that jump off the screen — elite speed, acceleration, and lateral motion
  • Explosive playmaker who immediately picked up a collegiate offense (in the toughest conference) without a senior year in high school
  • Exceptionally dangerous on crosses, seam routes, and slants — any scenario that delivers the ball while he’s in full stride makes for a tough stop
  • Quality hands and attacks the ball away from his body
  • Proven capable of doing damage on the ground through jet sweeps and end-arounds
  • Demonstrated upper-echelon vision and patience on designed yards-after-catch routes, such as extended handoffs and manufactured touches near the line of scrimmage
  • Has the hands, tenacity and toughness to suggest he could develop into a stronger blocker

[lawrence-related id=488681]

Cons

  • Lacks prototypical size — could lead to durability issues in time and may not hold up in pass protection, thus limiting his scheme versatility
  • Functional route runner but still has room for growth in route experience — caught a great deal of his targets near the line of scrimmage
  • Was last season’s ankle injury a sign of things to come? It’s not fair to label him injury-prone, but his size and violent style of play could open that door in time

Fantasy football outlook

Bowers’ style of play reminds of George Kittle. It should be noted, though, most hyper-athletic tight ends have struggled to meet expectations in the pros, and frequent injuries sprinkled in with usual strong showings have become Kittle’s brand. Kyle Pitts is a recent example of a “can’t miss” who has yet to really hit.

Bowers comes into the NFL with extraordinary expectations placed upon him, and the 2023 rookie showing of Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta undoubtedly will inflate the former Bulldog’s fantasy stock. Bowers has the talent and potential to be a perennial Pro Bowler. Will that start in Year 1? History suggests otherwise, but there’s a reasonable chance Bowers deserves matchup consideration more often than not as a rook.

He should be a top-20 selection in the upcoming draft, going perhaps as early as No. 10 to the New York Jets. Coming off the board at No. 12 (Denver Broncos) is possible but not likely, and then you see a gap in the teams with the need falling down Seattle (16th), Cincinnati (18th) or the Los Angeles Rams (19th), presuming another franchise doesn’t trade into position to draft Bowers ahead of this teams.

The Apopka, Fla., native, finished 2nd on the team in tackles for loss (8.5) and quarterback pressures (33), and blocked two field goals, including one in the national title game.

Carter is widely considered as one of the top defensive 2023 NFL draft prospects in the entire country.

Both Dawgs will have huge roles to play in the 2022 season.

PFF: Georgia football’s Brock Bowers dominant in redzone

No surprise here, Brock Bowers is one of the highest graded redzone TEs since 2018…

Georgia tight end Brock Bowers is coming off the most prolific tight end season in Bulldog history. And that’s as a freshman nonetheless.

Bowers totaled 56 receptions for 882 yards (15.8 avg.) and 14 total touchdowns and earned an absolutely incredible list of awards:

  • All-America First Team – USA Today, ESPN.com, The Athletic
  • All-America Second Team – Associated Press
  • True Freshman All-America – ESPN.com, The Athletic
  • Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award
  • Football Writers Association Freshman of the Year Award
  • Coaches’ SEC Freshman of the Year
  • AP SEC Newcomer of the Year

One of Bowers biggest advantages is in the redzone, where – just like in almost every other aspect of his game – was one of the best pass catchers in the last few seasons.

Florida’s Kyle Pitts and Penn State’s Patt Freiermuth, who are both NFL starters now, were both upperclassmen at the time and Bowers was this good in his first season.

If the Napa, Cal., native can improve with experience, Bowers may go down as one of the best receivers in Georgia and SEC history.

Georgia TE Brock Bowers named FWAA Freshman of the Year

What an incredible, record-breaking season for Brock Bowers…

Georgia freshman tight end Brock Bowers had possibly the best season a tight end has ever had at UGA, and that has garnered attention from one of the biggest college football organizations, the Football Writers Association of American.

The FWAA has named Bowers the 2021 Freshman of the Year for his incredible season that helped lead the Bulldogs to a national title.

Bowers racked up 882 yards on 56 catches, a whopping 14.0 yard average, with 14 total touchdowns. That’s 30 more catches than Georgia’s second-leading receiver.

The Napa, Calif., native helped seal the national championship with this catch and score versus Alabama:

Bowers set the UGA record for a tight end in receptions, receiving yards and  touchdowns, for both tight ends and receivers all-time, in 2021.

Georgia freshman earns SEC honor for performance vs. Vanderbilt

Georgia football is loaded with freshman talent and it was on display vs. Vandy.

Georgia freshman tight end Brock Bowers is leading the Bulldogs in receiving so far this season. The former four-star prospect had to step in when star tight end Darnell Washington underwent foot surgery in fall camp and has more than impressed through four games.

The Napa, Cal. was named SEC Freshman of the Week for a productive day versus Vanderbilt, racking up four catches for 69 yards and two touchdowns, with another 12 yards and a score on the ground.

Fellow Bulldog Adonai Mitchell won the same award just two weeks ago.

Bowers has 18 receptions for 272 yards and four touchdowns on the year. Georgia needed a playmaker to step up with the large number of injuries to receivers and Bowers has done just that.

Although most believed he would sign with Georgia, Bowers commitment is still huge for the Bulldogs, who’s 2021 class still only has 12 names on the board.

The Bulldogs’ 2021 class is currently ranked No. 14 in the country and fifth in the SEC. However, don’t question the talent level of the guys who are already locked- in.

Georgia currently has an average player rating of (.9364), which is higher than the Bulldogs’ average in last year’s No. 1 ranked class of 2020. (0.9296)

Georgia football’s 5-star QB commit Brock Vandagriff tweets at No. 2 TE in 2021 class in an effort to recruit the top players in the country

Georgia’s 5-star 2021 quarterback commit Brock Vandagriff has been playing a big role in recruiting members of UGA’s 2021 recruiting class.

Vandagriff, from Bogart, Georgia, plays for Prince Avenue Christian School and is actively recruiting some of the most talented players in the 2021 class to play along side him at UGA.

Vandagriff tweeted at Brock Bowers, the nation’s No. 2 tight end in the 2021 class, recruiting him to Athens.

Bowers is from Napa, California, and listed at 6-foot-3, 225 pounds. He has over 20 offers, and Georgia appears to be the leader right now.

Vandagriff fancied the idea of a “Brock-to-Brock” connection in Athens down the road, which could be very fun to watch.
