Panthers waive WR Marquez Stevenson from reserve/PUP list

The Panthers waived WR Marquez Stevenson from the reserve/PUP list on Friday.

On Friday, the Carolina Panthers officially waived wide receiver Marquez Stevenson from the reserve/physically unable to perform list. The 25-year-old, who was previously waived back on July 26 with a failed physical designation, missed training camp and preseason play due to an undisclosed injury.

Before breaking into the pros, the Shreveport. La. native played his college ball at the University of Houston from 2016 to 2020. There, he was a two-time First-team All-AAC selection—having reeled in 147 balls for 2,269 yards and 22 touchdowns with three additional end-zone visits on kickoff returns.

Stevenson would be selected in the sixth round of the 2021 draft by the Buffalo Bills. The speedy 5-foot-10, 180-pounder made an impression on special teams during his rookie campaign, fielding 14 punts and seven kickoffs over five games.

Following his release from Buffalo, and a brief stint on the Cleveland Browns practice squad in 2022, Stevenson signed on with the Panthers as one of six free agents this past May.

Panthers waive WR Marquez Stevenson

The Panthers have waived WR Marquez Stevenson.

With the Carolina Panthers looking for one of their players to take the lead on punt return duties, wideout Marquez Stevenson seemed likely to factor into the team’s decision-making process this summer. But a decision has already been made on his behalf, just one day into training camp.

As announced on Wednesday evening, the Panthers have parted ways the 25-year-old receiver. Stevenson, who did not participate in this morning’s practice, was waived with a failed physical designation.

A Shreveport. La. native, Stevenson played his college ball at the University of Houston from 2016 to 2020, where he was a two-time First-team All-AAC selection. He cracked into the NFL as sixth-round pick of the Buffalo Bills in 2021.

There, the speedy 5-foot-10, 180-pounder stuck on as a return man during his rookie campaign. He fielded 14 punts and seven kickoffs over five games.

Following his release from Buffalo and a brief stint on the Cleveland Browns practice squad in 2022, Stevenson signed on with the Panthers as one of six free agents on May 16, 2023.

The Carolina Panthers smelled what the XFL was cookin.’

As officially announced on Tuesday morning, the team has signed three players from the minor league football organization—all of whom were invited to rookie minicamp this past weekend. The trio includes defensive lineman Antwuan Jackson, wide receiver Gary Jennings and outside linebacker/tight end Jordan Thomas.

Jackson, who tweeted out his signing on Monday, attended Ohio State University from 2018 to 2021. He totaled 48 tackles and 3.5 sacks prior to his jump to the XFL.

Jennings has previous ties to general manager Scott Fitterer—who was in the front office for the Seattle Seahawks when they selected the West Virginia University product in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL draft. The 6-foot-1, 219-pound pass catcher has played in one NFL game, which came later in that 2019 season with the Miami Dolphins.

Thomas, before his move to defense, was a part of five NFL franchises between 2018 and 2022. The 6-foot-5, 277-pounder reeled in 22 catches for 226 yards and five touchdowns over 27 games.

Carolina also announced the additions of three non-XFL players—offensive tackle BJ Wilson, wide receiver Marquez Stevenson and safety Vernon Scott.

Browns waive WR Marquez Stevenson ahead of rookie camp

After adding multiple to the position the team is waiving the pass catcher.

Cleveland Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot is reporting the team is waiving wide receiver Marquez Stevenson for their second cut of the day, joining defensive tackle Ben Stille. Stevenson didn’t appear in a game for the Browns but was a returner for the Buffalo Bills in five games during the 2021 season.

The Browns needed to waive a couple of players ahead of rookie minicamp to make room for all of the added undrafted free agents. The bottom of the roster will likely see a ton of turnover between now and training camp for the team to feel good about the 90-man heading into training camp. General manager Andrew Berry also hinted at the possibility that more moves could come in the next couple of weeks.

4 Browns change their numbers entering the 2023 season

Four Browns players have changed their look for this season.

After adding a couple of handfuls of talent in free agency, the Cleveland Browns announced the numbers for the newest members of their team. Along with those new players, however, four current players like defensive end Alex Wright have changed their number. Wright announced his number change last week, as new defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson presumably paid the second-year player a pretty penny for the number.

However, three more players changed their numbers as well as they enter the 2023 season. Here are the four players who changed their numbers and what they will now be sporting for the Browns this season.

Browns fill empty roster spot left by Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, add 2 to practice squad

The Browns have filled the roster spot left by Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah

After placing linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah on Injured Reserve with a season-ending foot injury, they had a roster spot to fill. Today, they have signed fellow linebacker Jermaine Carter Jr. from their practice squad to the active roster. Carter has been a frequent player on gameday, exhausting his practice squad elevations. He now may get a chance to play some defensive reps as the Browns evaluate young talent with no playoffs to play for.

In addition, the Browns have made the Storey Jackson addition to their practice squad official, as well as adding speedy wide receiver Marquez Stevenson to their reserve unit as well.
