With one week of the regular season remaining, national college football awards are narrowing down possible selections.

Georgia star tight end Brock Bowers has been named as a semifinalist for multiple awards, including the Biletnikoff Award, given to the most outstanding receiver at any position.

The award named Bowers, the only tight end, among nine other semifinalists on Monday.

  • Brock Bowers (TE), Georgia
  • Luther Burden III (WR), Missouri
  • Keon Coleman (WR), Florida State
  • Troy Franklin (WR), Oregon
  • Marvin Harrison Jr. (WR), Ohio State
  • Xavier Legette (WR), South Carolina
  • Malik Nabers (WR), LSU
  • Rome Odunze (WR), Washington
  • Brian Thomas Jr. (WR), LSU
  • Malik Washington (WR), Virginia

Bowers leads the Bulldogs in receptions (51), receiving yards (661) and receiving touchdowns (6) this season despite missing two games due to an ankle injury that required TightRope surgery.

The two-time All-American and last year’s John Mackey Award winner will go down as one of the best players in Georgia history.

Biletnikoff Award finalists will be announced on Nov. 28 and the winner will be named on Dec. 8.

Bowers and the undefeated Bulldogs will take on rival Georgia Tech (6-5, 5-3 ACC) on Saturday for the last matchup of the regular season. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET, televised on ABC.

How UNC WR Josh Downs uses one-on-one battles to work his craft

UNC wide receiver Josh Downs has earned elite status heading into this upcoming season, letting it be known the junior is on NFL scouts radars.

The UNC football program kicks off its season this Saturday, set to host Florida A&M in hopes of a better season than the year before.

One player who wouldn’t mind repeating their success from last year is star wide receiver [autotag]Josh Downs[/autotag] who is now approaching his junior season. A 2021 semifinalist for the Biletnikoff award, Downs exploded onto the scene for UNC last season with 1,335 receiving yards and eight touchdowns.

Downs filled the void left by Dazz Newsome and Dyami Brown, giving Sam Howell a reliable target throughout the year. After just seven catches in his true freshman season, Downs broke the record for receptions (101) and receiving yards (1335) in UNC’s single-season history.

For Downs, the wide receiver worked on his craft every single day and explained how going up against Tony Grimes helped him have that breakout year as he told The Sporting News:

“It’s a one-on-one battle. It’s really who’s a better man,” Downs told TSN about his matchups with defensive backs. “I work on my craft every day you work on your craft. So who’s doing it better?

“I take pride in that. I don’t like losing one rep in any practice. I work with (top UNC cornerback) Tony Grimes every day — I live with him and going against him, it’s a battle. Every time he wins I’m frustrated, every time I win, he’s frustrated so we definitely go at it. I take that real personal when it’s one-on-one.”

The four-star wideout has been everything UNC could hope for, using his speed as the driving force for separation. Already looked at as one of the best receivers in the nation, don’t be shocked if Downs brings the Biletnikoff award to Carolina this year for the first time in the program’s history.

Downs is expected to produce a similar outing as last season, with many predicting a blockbuster junior year on the horizon. No doubt Downs has the attention of NFL scouts, and his elite status heading into the season is a clear indicator of what could be in store for the Georgia native.

Twitter sounds off as Alabama WR Jameson Williams doesn’t win Biletnikoff Award

Alabama wide receiver Jameson Williams was a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award for the nation’s best pass-catcher, but he was not select…

Alabama wide receiver Jameson Williams may only be in his first season with the program after transferring from Ohio State, where he spent two years, but his impact has been felt all across the country.

In 2021, Williams has put up 1,445 yards and 15 touchdowns on 68 receptions.

The junior receiver has catapulted himself into first-round projections for the upcoming 2022 NFL draft and has been recognized by the SEC, NCAA and national awards.

One award Williams was up for was the Biletnikoff award, which recognizes the best pass-catcher in college football.

He was a finalist alongside Jordan Addison of Pittsburgh and David Bell of Purdue.

Addison was named the award recipient and Twitter immediately began sounding off.

The Pittsburgh receiver has 1,479 an 17 touchdowns on 93 receptions – 34 more yards and two more touchdowns than Williams with 25 more catches.

How Georgia football’s defense can limit LSU QB Joe Burrow

UGA’s defense allows 10.4 PPG. It’s the best defense LSU has seen all year. The Tigers’ offense is the best the Dawgs will face in 2019.

Georgia’s defense is giving up 10.4 points per game and is by all metrics the best defense LSU has played all year. The Tigers’ offense is the best that the Dawgs have faced in 2019 and is led by Joe Burrow, who will likely have his name inscribed onto the Heisman Trophy in a few short weeks.

Burrow has completed an insane 314 of his 401 passing attempts (78.3%), has thrown an even more insane 44 touchdowns, and has amassed 4366 passing yards, enough to make him the SEC record holder for passing yards in a single season.

Those numbers are staggering and present a daunting task for the Silver Britches. But if any unit can possibly limit Joe Burrow, it’s the Bulldogs’ smothering defense.

The Tigers’ quarterback is poised and methodical with an ability to scramble outside the pocket the extend plays. He keeps his eyes downfield and has the speed to roll out and tuck the ball for quick gains to the sideline.

For the Junkyard Dawgs to diminish Burrow’s prowess, they need to keep him in the pocket. Rushing three men while dropping eight, including a spy linebacker eyeing the quarterback, keeps Georgia’s defense in a man free alignment that can negate big plays and contain Louisiana State’s explosive offense.

In 2019, several SEC West teams have used this formation in attempt to confuse Burrow to no avail, but Georgia’s speedy and physical defense possesses better athletes than any defensive group the Tigers have seen thus far, save for Alabama (which is debatable).

All of this is much easier said than done against a team with the Southeastern Conference’s best performing signal caller and an embarrassment of riches at the wide receiver position, which includes Biletnikoff Award finalists Ja’Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson. If Georgia’s secondary can maintain man coverage downfield while the front seven can keeping a spy on Burrow, they can hand LSU their first loss of the year.

Oklahoma’s CeeDee Lamb named a Biletnikoff Award semifinalist

Oklahoma’s star wide receiver, CeeDee Lamb was named to the Biletnikoff Award semifinalist list alongside 11 others from across the country.

CeeDee Lamb looks to follow in the steps of Dede Westbrook.

Oklahoma’s star wide receiver was named to the Biletnikoff Award semifinalist list alongside 11 others from across the country.

If Lamb were to win the award, he would be just the second Sooner to do so. Since the award has been founded, only Dede Westbrook has been awarded the honor for his 2016 season. Westbrook also finished in the top four in Heisman voting, taking the trip to New York City with Baker Mayfield.

Lamb would make the eighth Big 12 winner, following Westbrook, Oklahoma State’s James Washington (2017), and Justin Blackmon (2010-11), Texas Tech’s Michael Crabtree (2007-08) and Baylor’s Corey Coleman (2015).

Notable names who made the semifinal list include last years winner, Jerry Jeudy, from Alabama, his teammate DeVonta Smith, Ja’Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson of LSU and Omar Bayless from Arkansas State.

Lamb, so far on the season has 44 receptions for 983 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Oklahoma plays TCU this Saturday at 7 p.m. CT on FOX.

November is one of the greatest months for college sports, especially with football on the weekends and basketball during the week to keep the fans occupied. Last night, the Lady Vols basketball team brought joy to the folks on Rocky Top with an authoritative win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Tonight, the men’s team has a chance to match the women with a victory of their own.

Men’s basketball play tonight

Tennessee men’s basketball faces the Murray State Racers tonight in the second game of their season-opening homestand at Thompson-Boling Arena. The Volunteers will look to extend the nation’s longest active home win streak against their foes from Kentucky.

This is the fourth time the two teams have met, with their last tangle coming in 2006. The Vols are currently a perfect 3-0 against the Racers in a series that was first played back in 1945 in Knoxville but did not resume until 2005 in Nashville.

Tipoff is at 9 p.m. ET and can be watched on SEC Network and online through WatchESPN, and can be heard on local Vol Network affiliates.
