Wisconsin Basketball: Statistical history of No. 5 vs. No. 12 seeds in the NCAA Tournament

Is Wisconsin on upset alert against James Madison?

The 12-seed vs. 5-seed matchup has emerged as one of the more interesting March Madness matchups since the tournament expanded in 1985.

There have been 12 upsets in No. 12 vs No. 5 games since 2014. The most recent arrived in 2022 when New Mexico State defeated UConn 70-63.

Wisconsin enters this year’s tournament as a No. 5 seed with a first-round matchup against James Madison. Although the Badgers are favored by 5.5 points, the history behind 12-5 matches in March Madness cannot be understated.

IT’S BRACKET MADNESS: Enter USA TODAY’s NCAA tournament bracket contest for a chance at $1 million prize.

In 2019, the Badgers dropped their opening game of the tournament to No. 12 Oregon 72-54. The same year, future NBA All-Star Ja Morant dropped a triple-double for 12-seeded Murray State en route to a 83-64 victory over 5-seed Marquette.

Here is a quick overview of all the essentials you need to know for the iconic 12-5 matchup. It doesn’t mean great things for the Badgers.

Facts:

  • Since 1985, 12-seeds have defeated 5-seeds 53 times. Ahead of 2024’s tournament, the lower seed boasted a 53-99 mark (34.87 win percentage)
  • In 32 of the last 38 years, the 12-seed stole at least one first round game.
  • Other 12-5 games featuring Wisconsin:
    • 2009: Wisconsin defeats No. 5 Florida State 61-59
    • 2013: Ole Miss defeats No. 5 Wisconsin 57-46

Ball State vs Murray State Game Preview

Why Murray State Will Win

Can the Racers generate any points to go along with the downfield passing game.

Murray State might be 0-2, but it had to deal with Texas Tech and then Jacksonville State – the defensive numbers are a tad skewed the wrong way.

There’s only been one turnover so far, the offense is averaging 20 yards per completion, and now it gets to go against a Ball Stat defense that gave up close to 1,000 yards in the first two games.

This is the game for Murray State to let it rip, but …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Ball State Will Win

It’s having a hard time keeping the chains moving.

Time of possession isn’t a problem, but there aren’t a slew of third down conversions, at the running game isn’t doing enough, and now it gets a Ball State offense that’s been good, but wasn’t able to do enough against Tennessee and was on the wrong side of a shootout against Western Michigan.

As long as QB John Paddock gets time to work, he should be able to spread the ball around and give the Murray State secondary problems.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not like Murray State is getting a break now going on the road to face Ball State, but this might be its easiest game of the first three. It’ll show with more offensive production, but it won’t be enough.

Ball State will be balanced, it’ll win third downs, and it’ll take control from the start and keep the scoring going throughout.

It won’t get too ugly – Murray State will had its moments – but the Cardinals will be in control.

Texas Tech vs Murray State Game Preview

Why Murray State Will Win

The Racers have enough of a defense and a good enough pass rush to be a wee bit of a test.

The design of the Texas Tech offense – the new version – is to get the ball out of the hands of the quarterback fast enough to neutralize the pass rush.

The secondary was solid allowing 184 yards per game, and enough of the top defensive backs return to be good from the start.

Penalties weren’t a problem last year, controlling the clock isn’t going to be too much of an issue, and …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Here comes the Texas Tech offense.

Yeah, the Murray State secondary is good, but it’s about to get hit very, very hard by the new Red Raider coaching staff that includes WKU offensive coordinator Zach Kittley.

Here comes QB Tyler Shough, here comes the young but talented receiving corps, and here comes a whole lot of playmakers finding room in space with places to run free.

Murray State might play a little defense, but the offense doesn’t have the pop to keep up.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not going to blow up right away.

Texas Tech will need a few drives to get warmed up, and then the avalanche will come in the second quarter as Shough gets settled in.

The Red Raider defense that needs some work will look great, there will be enough of a running game to matter, and the first game of the Joey McGuire era will be a big success.

Five things to know about new LSU basketball coach Matt McMahon

Here are five things to know about LSU’s newest head coach

It was reported on Monday that LSU would be hiring Murray State’s Matt McMahon to fill the basketball opening.

McMahon was thought to be a strong candidate since the job came open after a seven-year run at Murray State, where he won multiple NCAA Tournament games in his tenure and won 25 games on three separate occasions.

McMahon is just 43 years old, when he first took the job at Murray State, he was one of the youngest head coaches in the country.

Murray State is coming off a year where the Racers went 31-3, which included an 18-0 conference record. The point is, he’s won a lot of basketball games.

It’s hard to imagine any LSU fans being upset with this hire in normal times, much less with the state the program is currently in.

McMahon didn’t build Murray State from scratch, it could be said he didn’t build it at all. Murray State had success before McMahon took over the program, but McMahon sustained it over a long period, which is not easy to do at a school of that stature.

LSU’s future remains murky but with McMahon in town, LSU seems to be in some competent hands it handles all the uncertainty headed its way.

Here are five things to know about Matt McMahon.
