Bleacher Report names Texas the Big 12 winner of early signing period

Texas’ 2022 recruiting class is widely regarded as one of the best in the nation.

In order to turn Texas around, Steve Sarkisian needed to hit on a ton of talent in the 2022 recruiting class.

He did not disappoint, as the Longhorns were able to address major needs by bringing in 14 linemen, with six across the offensive line and eight across the defensive line.

Texas now has the No. 5 class in the country for the 2022 cycle, and it also features what could be one of the greatest quarterback prospects in college football history in Quinn Ewers, who is just the second quarterback ever to have a perfect rating by 247Sports.

Texas also found success in the flipping recruits market, as they flipped three players from schools like Michigan (again), Ohio State, and Oklahoma.

Like many in the college football realm, Bleacher Report took notice of Texas’ success and tabbed them the winner for the Big 12 in terms of early signing day performance. Here is what they had to say about Sarkisian’s first class at Texas:

It’s called “spatula season” for good reason.

Wednesday alone, the Longhorns nabbed three in-state talents who had been committed elsewhere. They swiped 4-star cornerback Terrance Brooks from Ohio State, 3-star edge-rusher Ethan Burke from Michigan and 3-star athlete Xavion Brice from Oklahoma.

Later in the day, Texas received commitments from 4-star offensive tackle Malik Agbo and 3-star receiver Savion Red. Agbo, notably, became the fourth blue-chip blocker in the class.

Suddenly, the Longhorns have a top-five haul. And after a disastrous season, they absolutely needed this off-field momentum.

Big 12 teams shuffle around, Longhorns on the outside looking in of updated AP Poll

Texas still has unfinished business to tend to in order to re-enter the rankings, but a few Big 12 teams shuffled around this week.

The Longhorns remain unranked in the most recent AP Poll.

This should come as no surprise, as Texas had their bye week during Week 8, and prior to it were coming off two consecutive losses. In the two losses to the Oklahoma schools, the Longhorns displayed a strong first half with double-digit leads only to wet the bed both times in the second half.

Texas has a really strong opportunity to jump back in the rankings, as their next two games are against ranked opponents. Although the Longhorns did not play, several Big 12 teams shuffled around in the rankings this week.

Here is how the AP Poll looks after Week 8, which included a couple of upsets and top teams underperforming against lower level competition.

  1. Georgia
  2. Cincinnati
  3. Alabama
  4. Oklahoma
  5. Ohio State
  6. Michigan
  7. Oregon
  8. Michigan State
  9. Iowa
  10. Ole Miss
  11. Notre Dame
  12. Kentucky
  13. Wake Forrest
  14. Texas A&M
  15. Oklahoma State
  16. Baylor
  17. Pitt
  18. Auburn
  19. SMU
  20. Penn State
  21. San Diego State
  22. Iowa State
  23. UTSA
  24. Costal Carolina
  25. BYU
Others receiving votes:

Arkansas 36, Louisiana-Lafayette 32, North Carolina State 28, Houston 12, Virginia 9, Oregon State 7, Arizona State 7, Texas 6, Appalachian State 5, Florida 3, Minnesota 1, UCLA 1

The Longhorns received one more vote than they did last week, but if they win their next matchup against Baylor, they will surely jump back into the rankings. Oklahoma went down one spot due to their near loss to Kansas, and Iowa State re-entered the rankings for the first time since Week 4.

Three things that helped Texas in Week 8

So…you’re telling me there’s a chance?

The Longhorns ended their losing streak this week. Well, they at least delayed it depending on the outcome of the Baylor game next Saturday.

Even though Texas had a bye week during Week 8, their current standing within the Big 12 got a slight boost thanks to a couple of other teams.

After dropping two straight games against the Oklahoma’s schools, Texas’ bye week could not come any sooner. There is some much needed soul searching to do, as the offense has been desolate to close out the last two games, and even racked up a grand total of one yard against Oklahoma State in the second half.

It is not completely the fault of Casey Thompson, who seemed to have been playing injured, as the play calling has been very questionable. The Longhorns have decided to stop giving the ball to Heisman candidate Bijan Robinson although he is clearly the best weapon. It doesn’t help the offensive line is abysmal, and cannot block anyone in a different uniform.

The Texas defense has also been subpar at best and teams have consistently ran the ball down their throat.

With two whole weeks to figure out how to make the needed adjustments, the Longhorns Big 12 title hopes are still very much in play.

Let’s take a look at three things that worked in favor of Texas although they didn’t even take the field.

First, an extra week to prepare for Baylor
