Texas ‘in the driver seat’ to land five-star LB Anthony Hill

Texas sits in a good spot with five-star linebacker Anthony Hill.

Five-star linebacker Anthony Hill headlined a talented group of recruits who made the visit to Texas over the weekend.

It appears Texas made a strong impression on the nation’s No. 1 linebacker despite the Longhorns’ poor performance on the field.

Sam Spiegelman of On3 Sports believes Texas is the team to beat for Hill at this point in his recruitment. He deems the Horns are in “the driver seat” to land the Denton Ryan product.

Texas appears to be picking up serious momentum in Hill’s recruitment after his decommitment for Texas A&M last week. The Longhorns have compiled a plethora of crystal ball projections for Hill over the last few days.

247Sports rates Hill as the No. 1 overall linebacker and the No. 3 overall prospect in the state of Texas. Texas’ 2023 class currently ranks No. 6 in the nation.

Landing Hill would serve as a monumental get for Steve Sarkisian and his staff. The superstar prospect has the chance to fight for a starting spot as early as his freshman season.

Friday Night Notes: 4 big visits on tap for Texas, Florida flips QB from Miami, plus more

In this edition of Friday Night Notes, we examine a big recruiting weekend for the Texas Longhorns, Florida flipping a 4-star QB and more.

USA TODAY High School Sports‘ Friday Night Notes is a weekly high school recruiting recap that looks at the latest news from around the country—from the Class of 2023 to ’24 and beyond.

They don’t make anything small in Texas, especially regarding football. Cliché or not, this is a critical recruiting weekend for the Longhorns, as they are hosting four of the top recruits in the class of 2023.

The centerpiece of the group is Ryan (Texas) linebacker Anthony Hill, who just de-committed from Texas A&M. Hill (6-foot-2, 225 pounds) is the best linebacker in his class and ranks as high as No. 17 nationally.

If the Longhorns can get him, he’d become the fourth five-star recruit in their class. However, Hill’s not the only major prospect they have visiting this weekend. Texas has three other studs coming in for Saturday’s game against TCU…

Andrew Hattersley, 247 Sports

Pinnacle (Ariz.) TE Duce Robinson

Another five-star recruit, Robinson (6-foot-6, 225 pounds) is the No. 1 tight end in his class and the best player overall in the state of Arizona. He also has interest from Georgia, USC, Alabama and Oregon.

La Grange (Texas) CB Bravion Rogers

Rogers (5-foot-10, 185 pounds) is ranked No. 6 among cornerbacks and No. 8 overall in Texas. He’s currently committed to Texas A&M.

Martin (Texas) CB Javien Toviano

Toviano (6-foot-0, 185 pounds) is ranked just one spot lower than Rogers at his position. He has at least 34 offers on the table. The schools considered hot to get his commitment include Michigan, Alabama, Georgia, LSU and Oklahoma.

Any of these four would be a huge get for Texas, which ranked as high as No. 3 in the 2023 recruiting race after they secured Cedric Baxter Jr., the second-best running back in the class. Three months later, they’ve slipped to No. 6, falling behind Georgia, LSU and Ohio State.

Every recruiting prediction entered in favor of Texas for five-star LB Anthony Hill

At least seven different predictions from various networks have been entered in favor of Texas to land five-star LB Anthony Hill recently.

Texas is quickly gaining steam on the recruiting trail for the 2023 cycle. Continue reading “Every recruiting prediction entered in favor of Texas for five-star LB Anthony Hill”

5 things to consider when thinking about Oklahoma’s future

Oklahoma has had a rough year but here are five things to consider when considering the Sooners’ future. From @thatmanbryant

Oklahoma fans have experienced a roller coaster for the better part of the last 500 days. There was optimism after the 2020 season about the possibilities for that 2021 team. That optimism was dashed when their on-field performance never came close to the lofty expectations. There was a mid-season QB change involving a pair of former five-star quarterbacks.

After picking up a win over Texas in one of the greatest comebacks of all time, the Sooners’ offense stalled in late-season losses on the road to Baylor and Oklahoma State. The day following that loss to the Cowboys, Lincoln Riley bolted for the University of Southern California after gaslighting an entire fanbase that he wasn’t leaving (for LSU).

In the week that followed, Oklahoma hired Brent Venables. Despite the attrition suffered by the 2022 recruiting class after Riley’s departure, Venables and his staff helped put together a group that was viewed as the No. 8 recruiting class in the cycle.

Offseason expectations were fairly high (quite possibly, too high) as we rolled into the summer. Summer practices offered extreme optimism, as did the first three games.

A confounding loss to Kansas State, a team notorious for how they’ve played Oklahoma as of late, made us take a step back. The next week, Oklahoma barely got off the bus before getting blasted by TCU. The Horned Frogs now look like the favorites to win the Big 12 and possibly find themselves in the College Football Playoff.

Oklahoma lost quarterback Dillon Gabriel in the TCU loss and would be forced to play without him in the Red River Showdown. The Sooners got their bell rung by rivals Texas, losing 49-0. They ran the wildcat offense for the vast majority of the game with multiple scholarship quarterbacks dressed. That felt like rock bottom.

Gabriel returned the following week for homecoming against Kansas. The offense would shine, and the defense made some plays. The Sooners beat Iowa State in a game where Gabriel and the passing game didn’t have to carry the load before dropping their latest contest to Baylor, where the defense couldn’t stop the run.

We sit days away from Oklahoma going on the road to Morgantown to face the West Virginia Mountaineers. Oklahoma is not only 5-4, but their biggest rival appears to be in a better spot going forward as both look ahead to their eventual departure to the SEC.

Looks can be deceiving, and things can change from year to year. With that said, here are five things to consider or reconsider about Oklahoma’s future.

Texas Football: Longhorns eyeing two massive recruiting flips

Flipmas coming early for the Longhorns?

Steve Sarkisian and Texas’ coaching staff are not giving on on two priority targets in the 2023 recruiting class. The Longhorns remain all-in on five-star linebacker Anthony Hill and four-star defenive end Colton Vasek.

Texas appears to be trending in the right direction for both prospects. The Longhorns received multiple crystal ball projections in their favor for Hill and Vasek on Monday afternoon.

Hill announced his decommitment from Texas A&M on Monday and is scheduled to be in Austin this weekend for Texas’ matchup against TCU. Vasek is still verbally committed to Oklahoma but has been no stranger to Texas’ campus over the past few weeks.

Flipping the two blue-chip players would push Texas’ 2023 recruiting class up to No. 2 in the 247Sports composite rankings.

Last season the Longhorns struck gold by flipping five-star left tackle Kelvin Banks from Oregon late in the process. Time will tell if Texas’ relentless recruiting strategy is to pay off again this go around.

Texas A&M takes a hit with decommitment from 5-star LB Anthony Hill

According to Hayes Fawcett at on3, Hill now plans to take his recruitment all the way to signing day.

Ryan (Texas) five-star linebacker Anthony Hill committed to playing for Texas A&M at the end of July. Today, he backed out of that commitment. In a statement, Hill thanked the school and the coaching staff.

According to Hayes Fawcett at on3, Hill now plans to take his recruitment all the way to signing day.

Hill (6-foot-2, 225 pounds) is the consensus best linebacker in the class of 2023 and ranks No. 17 in the country according to 247 Sports.

The news was a blow for Jimbo Fisher’s 2023 recruiting class. Their score dropped to 212.88, which ranks No. 23 in the cycle. The Aggies were in the top 10 not too long ago.

Hill still has 33 offers on the table, including ones from Alabama, Miami, Oklahoma and USC – which were his other reported finalists. However, Nick Harris at Rivals reports that Texas is now trending for Hill’s commitment. He is visiting Austin for this weekend’s game against Auburn.

Nation’s No. 1-ranked linebacker decommits from Texas A&M; USC is in the hunt

The decommitment of linebacker Anthony Hill from Texas A&M presumably puts #USC and Lincoln Riley in play for the 5-star prospect.

If you regularly read Trojans Wire, first of all: Thank you. Second, if you read our site regularly, you would know that we mentioned the distinct possibility that Lincoln Riley and USC can fatten up on a likely parade of Texas A&M transfers.

Texas A&M lost to Florida this past weekend to fall to 3-6. The Aggies are unlikely to make a bowl game, which means that freshmen on the team (and other classes as well) won’t have to attend bowl practice sessions in December. This certainly makes it easier for them to transfer out of the program sooner rather than later.

Now, however, we have a non-transfer situation in recruiting. A high-profile linebacker just decommitted from Texas A&M.

We’ll fill you in on the details:
