Seahawks to sign Broncos DT Dre’mont Jones to 3-year deal worth $51M

The Seattle Seahawks agreed to the terms of a major deal on Monday, planning to sign former Denver Broncos defensive lineman Dre’mont Jones.

Seattle Seahawks fans rejoice! In a rare move, the team has actually agreed to sign someone on the first day of the legal negotiation period.

Notoriously slow in the first wave of free agency, the Seahawks have now agreed to sign Denver Broncos defensive tackle Dre’mont Jones to a three-year deal, worth $51 million. According to NFL’s Ian Rapoport, Jones will receive $23.5 million this season.

Jones was originally selected by the Broncos in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft out of Ohio State. He was ranked as one of the top-rated potential free agents this spring with 22 career sacks.

Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar had the following to say about Jones’ style of play.

“The Seahawks under Pete Carroll have always had a knack for taking multi-gap disruptors and unleashing them on the rest of the NFL,” Farrar tweeted. “Dre’Mont Jones gives them their best such player since Michael Bennett in his prime. Sucks to be Chiefs RG Trey Smith on this rep.”

New Orleans Saints free agency tracker: Every report, rumor, and signing

Our New Orleans Saints free agency tracker is live. Check this space often for every report, rumor, and signing:

Our New Orleans Saints free agency tracker is live. Check this space often for every report, rumor, and signing as the black and gold work to retool their roster for the 2023 season. The Saints are going into free agency with 56 of their 90 offseason roster spots filled, having already brought back several of their own players before the NFL’s legal tampering period begins.

Which brings us to how this process actually works. Then Saints can talk to their own free agents at any time — but league rules mean they can’t approach other teams’ free agents until 11 a.m. CT on Monday, March 13. That’s when teams are allowed to reach out to players around the league. But again, nothing is official until 3 p.m. CT on Wednesday, March 15. That’s when the new league fiscal year begins and when players can sign on the dotted line.

So we’ve got to be careful with how this is all reported. Agreements can fall apart and be broken. We’ll have all of the Saints news from trusted outlets and reporters gathered in this space along with our coverage from every report and rumor. Stay tuned as things heat up in the days ahead:

Seahawks locking up Geno Smith sends message to other free agents

By agreeing to terms with quarterback Geno Smith early, the Seahawks are sending a message to other potential free agents around the league.

The Seattle Seahawks were able to lock up quarterback Geno Smith for the next three years ahead of the start of free agency in a deal that works out positively for both sides involved.

Coach Pete Carroll was asked about the move during his interview on Seattle Sports Radio on Tuesday.

“It’s a good deal, a good deal for the club,” Carroll told Brock and Salk. “I think it sends a really good message too to everybody on the outside – this is a good place and things are going in the right direction, and we’re fired up about it.”

One of the benefits of signing Smith ahead of the new league year is to attract other potential free agents who may see Seattle as a future landing spot.

“It’s meaningful in so many areas,” Carroll continued. “Working together so that we would have an opportunity to continue to compete to bring guys to this club and get guys on our team has been at hand, and now we’re rolling. We can plan and we can plan, but until we knock the big one in the boat . . . so now there’s a whole next sequence of things that are going to come together, so here we go.”

The official start of free agency is on March 15 but the legal tampering period kicks off Monday.

A familiar face will be returning to the Seattle Seahawks secondary. Free-agent cornerback Pierre Desir has agreed to terms on a one-year deal to return to the Emerald City, according to his agency, EnterSports Management.

Desir was originally selected in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL draft by the Browns. He landed in Seattle as a member of the practice squad in 2016 and signed a futures contract for the next season but failed to make the 53-man roster cuts after training camp that year. He has since spent time with the Colts, Jets, and Ravens.

The Seahawks have a couple of vacancies to fill in the secondary and Desir’s veteran experience could net him a roster spot heading into the season.

Pass rusher Aldon Smith agrees to terms with Seahawks

Pass rusher Aldon Smith has agreed to terms with the Seattle Seahawks after a visit on Wednesday. He’ll add depth to the defensive line.

After a trip to the facility on Wednesday, free-agent pass rusher Aldon Smith has agreed to terms with the Seattle Seahawks on what is reportedly a low-risk, one-year deal.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport were the first to report the visit and the contract agreement. As Rapoport also notes Seattle had attempted to trade for the defensive end last year.

The Seahawks have been diligently putting together their defensive line this offseason and Smith figures to be a rotational part of the puzzle who will add coveted depth to the line.

The biggest concern with the veteran will be whether or not he can stay out of legal trouble – the very issue that cost him his career with the 49ers after four years with the team.

Smith was eventually able to achieve reinstatement from the league and signed with the Cowboys on a one-year deal last season.

Hyde played one season in Seattle and finished his 2020 campaign logging 81 carries for 356 yards and four touchdowns.

As for Dorsett, he too only spent one season in Seattle, although he never took the field. Dorsett injured his right foot in training camp and was placed on the injured reserve, where sat out the year.

The most recent Collective Bargaining Agreement dictates that Brooks’ fifth-year option would become fully guaranteed should the Seahawks choose to exercise it after his third year.
