Former Georgia QB Aaron Murray says of current UGA QB D’Wan Mathis – ‘extremely impressive’

Former Georgia quarterbacK Aaron Murray says current UGA QB D’Wan Mathis ‘extremely impressive.’ Details and analysis here.

Georgia football’s quarterback competition will be interesting to watch after projected starter Jamie Newman’s decision to opt-out of the 2020 CFB season.

Intersting, yet nerve racking.

The Bulldogs are left with USC transfer J.T. Daniels, redshirt freshman D’Wan Mathis, fourth-year junior Stetson Bennett and freshman Carson Beck.

Daniels is by far the most tenured quarterback on the list.

Before a knee injury derailed his 2019 season – ultimately leading to him signing with the Bulldogs in July – Daniels threw for 2,672 yards with 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions on a 59.5 % completion rate at USC in 2018.

Daniels will be the favorite to start for Georgia against Arkansas week one, but don’t count out the other guys in the room just yet.

Take Mathis for example. He came to Georgia in 2019 rated as the No. 11 pro style quarterback and showed flashes of brilliance in scrimmages until surgery to remove a brain cyst sidelined him for the rest of 2019.

He is now fully cleared and competing for the starting spot.

In a Tweet Wednesday afternoon, after reports of Newman’s decision to transfer, former Georgi quarterback Aaron Murray gave his thoughts on Mathis’ abilities.

Any input from the SEC’s all-time leading passer is welcome here. If Mathis can impress Murray, maybe we are too quick to crown Daniels as the starter just yet.

Georgia football play of the day – Georgia vs Auburn (2013)

Watch the Georgia football play of the day here!

It’s Monday, August 31 and today’s play of the day comes from Georgia versus Auburn at Jordan-Hare stadium in 2013.

No. 25 ranked Georgia was considered an underdog in their match up with No. 7 Auburn, who had national title hopes in mind.

Auburn held a 20-point lead early in the fourth quarter before star quarterback Aaron Murray led the Bulldogs to three straight touchdowns to make it 37-31 Auburn.

After a late hold by the Georgia defense, it was Murray and the Bulldogs final chance to secure a comeback win.

Georgia marched down the field to the Tigers’ 5 yard line where they faced a fourth and goal with 1:56 remaining.

Watch what happened next:

One of the most clutch plays in Georgia football history that, unfortunately, gets overlooked because of Auburn’s miracle game-winning pass that answered this legendary score by Murray.

Regardless, Murray finished with 415 yards passing with 3 total touchdowns and an interception in one of the most impressive performances of his great career in Athens.

Georgia football play of the day – Georgia vs LSU (2013)

Watch the Georgia football play of the day here!

It’s Wednesday, August 26 and today’s play of the day comes from one of the most exciting games ever played in Sanford Stadium, No. 9 Georgia versus No. 6 LSU on September 28, 2013.

After LSU answered the Bulldogs’ initial touchdown with two of their own late in the first quarter, it was up to star quarterback Aaron Murray and the Georgia offense to lead the Bulldogs back into the game.

LSU made a strong push late, but Georgia would go on to win 44-41 behind four touchdown passes from Murray with 112 receiving yards and this touchdown from receiver Chris Conley.

Georgia football play of the day: Georgia vs Michigan State (2013)

Watch the Georgia football play of the day here.

It’s Tuesday, August 25 and today’s play of the day comes from Georgia versus Michigan State in their match up in the 2013 Outback Bowl.

No. 16 Georgia took on No. 17 Michigan State in a quarterback battle between the Bulldog’s Aaron Murray and the Spartans’ Kirk Cousins – both future NFL signal callers.

Georgia led 9-0 with two minutes remaining in the second quarter as Michigan State was set to punt.

Watch what happened next:

Boykin was fun to watch!

I’m not sure what happened during halftime, but the same teams that went to the locker rooms didn’t come back out for the second half.

Michigan State would defeat Georgia in triple overtime 33-30, featuring a few missed Georgia field goals.

Who belongs on UGA football’s Mt. Rushmore for the decade?

ESPN’s Paul Finebaum released his Georgia Bulldogs football Mt. Rushmore for the 2010s decade. Who was UGA’s best of the decade?

It’s been a decade full of ups and downs for Georgia Bulldog fans around the country. Georgia fans have seen a coaching change, had their hearts broken numerous times, and seen their Dawgs bounce back to the nation’s elite from a 6-7 season in the 2010 season.

Who have been the best Georgia Bulldogs this decade? One caveat that’s required is the player has to have made an impact this decade, not last decade. For instance A.J. Green would be in the running, but he only played one season (2010) this decade.

Here’s who Paul Finebaum put on Georgia’s all-decade team:

This isn’t a bad Mt. Rushmore. Sony Michel, Todd Gurley, and Nick Chubb show Georgia’s prowess at running back this decade. Gurley is the only player to leave after three years. Murray, Chubb, and Michel all stayed four years, which greatly helps their cause.

One question is: do you pick the best players or the ones who had the longest, most impactful careers?

Other candidates include: Jarvis Jones, Jake Fromm, Roquan Smith, Andrew Thomas, Deandre Baker, Alec Ogletree, Rodrigo Blankenship, Brandon Boykin, Bacarri Rambo, J.R. Reed, David Andrews, and Isaiah Wynn. Lots of talent has come through Athens this decade.

My Mt. Rushmore is: Aaron Murray, Andrew Thomas, Sony Michel, and Nick Chubb. Michel and Chubb played four years in Athens, so they get the nod over Todd Gurley. Each of these players are three or four-year starters, unlike Deandre Baker and Roquan Smith. I don’t think these are the best players (Todd Gurley was the best RB of the decade), but they each had long, consistent careers.

The defense gets no love, but defenders have rarely made a huge impact for three or four seasons in Athens. Brandon Boykin only played two years this decade. J.R. Reed was the toughest to leave off the list. He’s put up impressive numbers in his three season stay in Athens. Reed should’ve won the Jim Thorpe Award over Grant Delpit last week.
