7 former Jaguars set to play in Super Bowl LVIII

The Jaguars still haven’t played in a Super Bowl, but a handful of their former players are set to play in the big game in two weeks.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are still one of 12 teams that have never won a Super Bowl and one of four that have never reached the big game.

On Sunday, the Detroit Lions spoiled their chance to scratch themselves from at least one of those lists when they blew a 24-7 halftime lead against the San Francisco 49ers. Instead, it’ll be the five-time champion 49ers meeting the Kansas City Chiefs in Las Vegas in two weeks.

While the Jaguars will hope for better results in the future, a handful of former members of the team are set to compete for a chance at a Super Bowl ring.

Here are seven former members of the Jaguars who are set to play in Super Bowl LVIII (plus another two on the Chiefs’ practice squad):

49ers promote two players from practice squad before Monday Night Football vs. Vikings

49ers promote pair of players to active roster from practice before meeting the Vikings on Monday Night Football in Santa Clara.

With multiple key players set to miss Monday Night Football due to injuries, the San Francisco 49ers promoted a pair of players from the practice squad before hosting the Vikings in Santa Clara.

Cornerback Shemar Jean-Charles and wide receiver Chris Conley will join the 49ers active roster on Monday Night Football against the Vikings. This will be Jean-Charles’ third elevation this season and Conley’s second.

Before Jean-Charles joined the 49ers, the former App State defensive back played 21 games with the Green Bay Packers since 2021. Jean-Charles was drafted in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL draft by Green Bay.

Conley has spent nine seasons in the NFL, primarily with the Kansas City Chiefs. He’s also had stops in Jacksonville and Houston. He will provide depth to the 49ers’ pass-catching unit that will be without Deebo Samuel on Monday Night.

Kickoff against the Vikings is set for 5:15 p.m PT on Monday night.

49ers plan at WR if Deebo Samuel, Jauan Jennings are out

Here’s the #49ers plan in case they’re missing Deebo Samuel AND Jauan Jennings on Sunday:

The 49ers may find themselves in a pinch at wide receiver for Sunday’s game against the Cardinals.

WR Deebo Samuel is listed as questionable with a knee injury, while WR Jauan Jennings is officially doubtful because of a shin issue.

If Samuel and Jennings are both absent from the NFC West showdown at Levi’s Stadium it would leave the 49ers with only three healthy receivers – Brandon Aiyuk, Ray-Ray McCloud and Ronnie Bell. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said the team would turn to a pair of veteran WRs from the practice squad if they’re missing both Samuel and Jennings.

“It’ll be Chris [Conley] or Willie [Snead IV],” Shanahan on Friday said in a press conference. “Both of those guys are the same guys in subtly different ways to us, but we’ve got a lot of confidence in both of them. We’ll figure that out based on which guys are down.”

Saturday’s roster moves that show which players were elevated from the practice squad will give a lot of insight into which way the receivers are trending.

The club can only elevate two players and they have two linebackers (Dre Greenlaw and Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles) who are questionable and may also require a replacement.

Conley was up for the 49ers in Week 3 and saw action on nine offensive snaps. He and Snead both had productive preseasons for the 49ers and a situation like this one where the 49ers need reliable veteran options is why they were brought back to the practice squad.

49ers promote CB Tre Swilling to active roster, release CB Anthony Brown

Prior to their primetime tilt against the Giants on Thursday, the 49ers announced some roster moves.

Prior to meeting the New York Giants in primetime on Thursday Night Football, the San Francisco 49ers announced a couple of roster moves, including a promotion to the active roster.

On Thursday, the 49ers announced they’re promoting cornerback Tre Swilling to the active roster. To make room for Swilling on the 53-man roster, the 49ers are waiving recently signed veteran defensive back Anthony Brown.

With cornerback Samuel Womack hitting the injured reserve, the 49ers have an opening in the secondary.

Swilling was recently elevated to the roster for gameday against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. Heading into Week 3, he will now have a spot on the official roster.

Swilling was signed by the Tennessee Titans in 2022 as an undrafted free agent out of Georgia Tech. Along with the Titans and 49ers, Swilling has spent time on the Saints practice squad in his young football career.

The former Yellow Jacket will slide in behind Deommodore Lenoir, Charvarious Ward and Isaiah Oliver on the 49ers’ depth chart.

Former Georgia WR signs with San Francisco 49ers

Former UGA wide receiver Chris Conley has signed a contract with the San Francisco 49ers.

Former Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Chris Conley has signed with the San Francisco 49ers.

Conley, who joins San Francisco on a one-year deal, previously played in the NFL for the Kansas City Chiefs, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans.

The Chiefs drafted Chris Conley in the third round of the 2015 NFL draft. Conley played in seven games for the Titans last season. He hauled in four catches for 46 yards.

The 30-year-old wide receiver played at Georgia from 2011-2014. Conley still has excellent speed.

Conley has 217 career receptions for 2,853 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns across eight career NFL seasons.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the news of Conley’s signing with the 49ers:

Titans free-agent WR Chris Conley visited 49ers

Titans free-agent WR Chris Conley recently visited the 49ers.

Former Tennessee Titans wide receiver Chris Conley is apparently drawing interest from the San Francisco 49ers.

According to the league’s transactions wire on Friday, the Niners hosted Conley for a visit. He was one of two wideouts San Fran brought in, along with Laquon Treadwell.

Tennessee brought Conley in during the 2022 campaign when the wide receivers corps. was banged up and not playing well. He ended up playing in seven games, catching four balls for 46 yards.

Conley’s best season came in 2019 with the Jacksonville Jaguars, when he reeled in career-highs in receptions (47), yards (775) and touchdowns (five). Conley has also spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Texans.

There has been no indication the Titans have interest in bringing back their free-agent wideout, but he wouldn’t move the needle for the Titans anyway, as Tennessee desperately needs to add some impact receivers at the top of their depth chart, something Conley isn’t.

Titans waive K Josh Lambo among four roster moves

The Titans made four roster moves on Monday.

The Tennessee Titans announced four roster moves on Monday, one of which included the parting of ways of kicker Josh Lambo, who was waived from the active roster.

This appears to be good news for the Titans, as it likely means kicker Randy Bullock is ready to return after a one-game absence. Lambo missed one of his four extra point tries in Week 11 but did not attempt a field goal.

And, with nobody being added in Lambo’s place on the roster, it leaves the Titans with an open spot. The hope is rookie wide receiver Kyle Philips, who is eligible to return from injured reserve this week, eventually takes that spot.

In addition to that move, the Titans waived tight end Anthony Auclair from the practice squad and added both wideout Chris Conley and offensive lineman Eric Smith.

Tennessee will host the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 12, with kickoff set for noon CDT on Sunday.

Titans promote kicker Josh Lambo from practice squad, waive WR Chris Conley

The Titans waived WR Chris Conley to make room for kicker Josh Lambo, who was promoted from the practice squad.

The Tennessee Titans were hit with a bit of unfortunate news on the final injury report of the week as kicker Randy Bullock has officially been declared out with his right-calf issue.

Bullock apparently suffered some type of injury to his leg during last Sunday’s pregame warmups. Despite all this, Bullock was able to kick for the team against the Broncos and he did so admirably.

However, this injury is at least serious enough to prevent the Titans kicker from playing in Thursday night’s massive showdown in Green Bay.

With Bullock out, the team has signed kicker Josh Lambo to their 53-man roster from the practice squad.

The Michigan native was recently signed to the team’s practice squad after seven previous years of NFL experience with both the Chargers (2015-16) and Jaguars (2017-21).

Over Lambo’s career, he has connected on 128 of 147 field goal attempts (87.1 percent) with a career-long of 59 yards.

The eighth-year kicker has tallied 527 career points, while also earning second-team All-Pro honors after his impressive 2019 campaign in which he made 33-of-34 field goals for the Jaguars.

In order to make room for Lambo, the Titans waived wide receiver Chris Conley.

New Titans WR Chris Conley is very confident in run-blocking ability

New Titans WR Chris Conley has no shortage of confidence in his run-blocking ability.

Any wide receiver that comes to the Tennessee Titans has to be able to block, especially when it comes to those players who are further down the depth chart.

Tennessee’s offense asks for a lot from its wideouts in that department, and it’s something new wide receiver Chris Conley knows full well upon his arrival in Nashville.

“I mean that’s part of the identity of this team,” Conley said, per John Glennon of Sports Illustrated. “You hear it right out of the gate. You know that’s the standard, and that is what they need [from receivers] — body on a body, get movement, make sure that we can run the ball and everything comes off of that.”

“I know their mentality is that of physicality, of dominating your opponent,” Conley added. “It’s being fundamentally sound. It’s not shying away from anything. I knew what I was coming into, and I know there’s a very high standard on finishing here. That’s a challenge. That’s a challenge you want to be able to attack and to tackle.”

Conley, who was signed to Tennessee’s active roster on Tuesday, has no shortage of confidence in his ability to block.

“I think I’m one of the best run-blocking wide receivers in the league,” Conley said. “I’ve thought that since I’ve got in the league all that time ago, and I don’t think any of that has changed. That’s definitely been a strong part for me, but I believe there’s always room for improvement.”

The emphasis on blocking is obviously understandable, but that isn’t the biggest issue Tennessee has with its current wide receivers group.

Separation has been a problem all season long, as has the ability to break off chunk plays through the air. It remains to be seen if Conley can help improve either situation, but I’m not holding my breath.

The addition of Conley isn’t a bad one by any means, but he isn’t the impact wideout the Titans need, either. And, with the NFL trade deadline rapidly approaching on Nov. 1, Tennessee is running out of time to add one.
