Texas picks up crystal ball prediction for four-star CB

UT has landed a huge crystal ball prediction. 247Sports has predicted 2021 cornerback Jamier Johnson will commit to the Longhorns on June 3.

Texas has landed a huge crystal ball prediction from Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports, as he has predicted 2021 cornerback Jamier Johnson will commit to the Longhorns. He also gave an eight on his confidence rating, proving Johnson could be on his way to Austin.

Johnson is from Pasadena, California, and would be a rare out-of-state- recruit for Tom Herman. 11 of the 13 guys in the 2021 class are from the state of Texas. Three-star wide receiver Casey Cain from Louisiana and Australian punter Isaac Pearson would join Johnson as out-of-state- prospects.

Rated a four-star prospect on the 247Sports composite, Johnson is a top 300 player in the country. He ranks 17th overall at the cornerback position and 24th in the state of California.

Back on June 11, Johnson announced he would be committing on July 3. His top seven schools consist of Arizona State, Colorado, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oregon, Texas, and USC.

If Johnson does pick the Longhorns, he would be the third commit at defensive back in the 2021 class. Ishmael Ibraheem and JD Coffey both pledged to Texas on June 15.

Georgia football 5-star QB commit Brock Vandagriff shines on first day of Elite 11 competition

The 22nd annual Elite 11 quarterback competition began Monday and Georgia football commit Brock Vandagriff looks the part so far.

On Monday, 20 of the top- high school quarterbacks in the nation arrived in Nashville for the first day of competition at the 22nd annual Elite 11 finals.

Among those competing is Georgia football commit Brock Vandagriff, a 5-star quarterback from Bogart, Georgia. Vandagriff is rated as the No. 2 dual-threat quarterback in the 2021 recruiting class.

247Sports spoke with Elite 11 head coach Trent Dilfer about his thoughts after day one and it seems Vandagriff is matching the high expectations so far.

“Vandagriff is awesome,” Dilfer stated. “He’s another one of those kids that makes everything look easy. His tape matches what you see in person. It’s impossible not to put the other stuff out of your mind when you’re watching him, he plays six weeks after he shatters his ankle with screws in his ankle and scores six touchdowns. He’s not a camp guy, you can see he’s a football player at a camp. He’s consistent.”

Vandagriff isn’t the only Georgia quarterback in Nashville. Wake Forest transfer quarterback Jamie Newman is also representing the Bulldogs as a counselor.

Notable former UGA quarterbacks that have participated in the competition are D.J. Shockley, Matthew Stafford, Aaron Murray, Jacob Eason and Jake Fromm – not a bad list to follow if you’re Vandagriff.

Class of 2021 four-star tight end Terrance Ferguson, a player with the Badgers in his final list of teams, tweeted today that he is moving his commitment date up to tomorrow at 6 p.m. CST.

As written in the tweet, his decision will be aired on his Instagram live stream and on local news.

The Colorado native is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 12 tight end in his class, the No. 3 player from his state and the No. 280 overall prospect and his top five schools include Wisconsin, USC, Tennessee, Oregon and Auburn.

The Badgers already have a four-star tight end in their class of 2021 in Jack Pugh, though the addition of Ferguson would likely vault the class from its current position at No. 12 up into the top-10 for the first time in school history.

Earlier today Paul Chryst and the Wisconsin Badgers added the first cornerback to their class of 2021 in three-star recruit Ricardo Hallman.

The addition of Hallman now gives the Badgers 15 commits in their 2021 class, one which still has sights on landing Nolan Rucci, Terrance Ferguson, Skyler Bell and others.

Before today’s news the class was ranked No. 13 in the nation and No. 3 in the Big Ten.

After Hallman announced his commitment? The class jumped two spots to No. 11 in the nation and stayed No. 3 in the conference.

The Badgers have not had a top-20 class since the beginning of the internet recruiting ranking era, let alone top-10.

If Chryst and company are able to land Rucci, Ferguson and Bell? This class could push well inside the top 10 and cement itself as the best class in program history.

His commitment is a continuation of the impressive recruiting job done by Paul Chryst and company this period as they have already put together the best class in program history and still have more work to do.

Opposing Coaches Anonymously Critique Notre Dame

As part of Athlon’s 2020 college football preview issue, Notre Dame was analyzed by some anonymous opposing coaches.

As part of Athlon’s 2020 college football preview issue, Notre Dame was analyzed by some anonymous opposing coaches. For those not interested in buying the issue, 247Sports did the work for you. However, once you see what these coaches had to say, you might change your mind.

The first quote had to do with the Irish’s coach:

“The last two seasons have been an impressive resurgence for Brian Kelly. It seemed like everything was going to fall apart and that job was going to eat him up, and he re-emerged by doing the hard things. They blew up the staff, and from what we hear, he’s been willing to change a lot, too.”

Another had to do with the schedule the Irish will tackle to try and make the playoff:

“If their standard is playoff or nothing, it could be hard with the schedule. When we prep for these guys, you have to look at their entire schedule. Are they playing to stay healthy? Are they in a lighter stretch? It’s different than a [Power Five]. They’re going to face more athleticism late in the year with the ACC teams. That could help them get further along on offense.”

Do you agree with either of these assessments? These are from folks who have made football their lives, so their opinions carry some weight. Even if you don’t care with the chosen words, you have to respect what was said here.

East Lansing wide receiver Andrel Anthony has Michigan State in his top four

Anthony will be choosing between the Spartans and three other midwest powers in his recruitment.

The recruitment for the number one receiving prospect in Michigan is starting to wind down.

East Lansing wide receiver Andrel Anthony Jr. announced his top four schools on Saturday, of which Michigan State made the cut. The other three schools are Michigan, Notre Dame, and Penn State.

Anthony is a three-star prospect and the No. 12 player in the state of Michigan for the class of 2021 per the 247Sports composite rankings. He is ranked No. 531 in the entire class of 2021 and would be MSU’s highest-rated recruit in the class of 2021 should he end up committing to the Spartans. Anthony is also the teammate of current MSU commit Ethan Boyd. Right now MSU is considered a slight favorite to land the talented pass catcher, but as we all know, a lot can change in the recruiting game.

Rivals recruiting write Corey Robinson reported earlier in the week that a late summer commitment is a possibility for Anthony.

247Sports names the Longhorns as tier four title contenders

Recently 247Sports laid out the title contenders for 2020. Each team put into tiers with Texas being among those in tier four.

Heading into the 2019 season, expectations were high for Tom Herman and company. The team was coming off an impressive victory over the Georgia Bulldogs in the Allstate Sugar Bowl. It was the first full season with then junior quarterback Sam Ehlinger at the helm but it ended in disappointment. The Longhorns faced off against their bitter rivals in the Big 12 Championship but failed to return in 2019.

The first road block in their season was a loss at home to the eventual National Champions. Even after starting out 2-0 in conference play and 4-1 overall, the lost to their hated rivals, the Sooners. They played an inferior team in Kansas and narrowly escaped. Then lost three of their final five games to close out the season. Not the season anyone expected after winning a New Years Six bowl to finish 2018.

Prior to their Valero Alamo Bowl matchup with the Utah Utes, the coordinators were dismissed. The staff was essentially wiped out following the season. Fast forward to June, there is a bit of excitement with a new offense and defense set to take the field for summer workouts. Expectations are that a better season in 2020 should be on the horizon.

The expectations should be compete for a conference championship and hopefully get an invite to the College Football Playoff. The Sooners have been the only Big 12 team to represent the conference and many Longhorns fans, players and media alike would love to see the burnt orange get their shot. In order to do that they will need to dethrone their enemy to the north.

According to 247Sports who recently put all the title contenders into tiers, they have work to do in order to get there.

Texas and Texas A&M both have an on-paper shot this year. They’re among the most experienced teams in the country with senior quarterbacks leading way.

Texas’ issue is a deeper-than-normal Big 12 and a lack of scheme continuity following an offseason of coaching staff changes. A lot must come together early for the Longhorns with a schedule that’s somewhat frontloaded. Trips to LSU and Kansas State come within the first month followed quickly by a clash with Oklahoma.

The Longhorns have a tough stretch but it isn’t an impossible task. To make a run at a title, they will need to beat teams such as Oklahoma, Clemson, Alabama or Ohio State. Those are the teams in the top two tiers. Running through the first five games unscathed will give them the confidence that they can make that deep run into December.

Texas was listed in tier four with the Aggies, Michigan Wolverines and Auburn Tigers.

  • Tier One: Alabama, Ohio State and Clemson
  • Tier 1.5: Georgia
  • Tier Two: Oklahoma
  • Tier Three:Florida, LSU, Notre Dame and Penn State
  • Tier Four; Texas, Texas A&M, Michigan and Auburn
  • Tier Five: Oregon, USC and Washington
  • Tier Six: Oklahoma State, Minnesota and Wisconsin

Ohio State named a tier 1 title contender with two other teams by 247Sports

Ohio State football was included as a tier 1 national title contender with two other teams according to 247Sports.

Three are a very select group of teams that are heading into the college football season with the best-perceived chances at winning a national championship in 2020. It may be no surprise that Ohio State is expected to be one of those teams talented enough to win the ultimate prize, and 247Sports agrees.

Chris Hummer published a piece that outlines various tiers from No. 1 through No. 6 and the Buckeyes are with Clemson and Alabama as the only three with the best shot in tier 1. You can get a look at the rest of the teams in each tier by visiting the piece on 247Sports.

As far as the Big Ten goes behind the Buckeyes, Penn State is in tier 3, Michigan in tier 4, and Minnesota and Wisconsin both in tier 6.

So why does Hummer believe Ohio State is one of the teams a cut above the rest? You can probably guess some of those reasons, but let’s take a look at what he says.

Next … What Chris Hummer says about the Buckeyes

The Badgers named a ‘tier 6 title contender’ for the 2020 season

247Sports put the top teams in college football into “title contender tiers” today and the Badgers fell in tier No. 6…

247Sports put the top teams in college football into “title contender tiers” today and the Badgers fell in tier No. 6.

Big Ten teams ahead of the Badgers, as seen above, are Ohio State in tier one, Penn State in tier three and Michigan in tier four.

Here’s what the piece had to say about the Badgers’ title chances this season:

The Badgers are the obvious answer. They return the 34th-most production in the country, and they have a record of challenging for a playoff spot. Wisconsin has won 10-plus games in five of the last six years. If the Badgers can figure out an offensive replacement for Jonathan Taylor, get slightly better QB player from Jack Coan and be a little better in the secondary, this team will have a shot. Back-to-back games with Michigan and Notre Dame will determine the direction of the Badgers’ season.

Looking holistically, tier six isn’t necessarily a wrong place to put Paul Chryst’s team. But having them ranked two tiers behind Michigan? That seems a bit off with the Wolverines’ recent experiences playing Ohio State and Penn State in their own division.

We wrote an article two months ago about ESPN’s outlook on Wisconsin using their FPI tool. Their conclusion? The Badgers have the fourth-highest chance at winning the national championship due to a combination of their returning production and easier schedule compared to other top teams.

I don’t know if strength-of-schedule was used to create these tiers, but if there’s one takeaway from this piece it is that 247Sports has a drastically-different outlook for both Michigan and Wisconsin than ESPN’s FPI tool does, with the Wolverines falling at No. 19 in ESPN’s ranking and being given a 0% chance to win the national championship.

The Badgers’ season is scheduled to kick off September 4 at Camp Randall Stadium against the Indiana Hoosiers.
