Ranking the Texas Longhorns top five rivals in football

Which teams are ranked in the Texas Longhorns top five rivalries

There is much debate about ranking the Longhorn’s top rivals in football but we will rank their top five rivals.

The Texas Longhorns have a rich history of rivalries on the football field as many fans can imagine. While the departure of Texas from the Big 12 has shifted who the Longhorns will consistently play on the football field, a group of football programs continue to hold significant importance on the football field with Texas. Here is a brief look at the Longhorns’ football rivals before we rank them one through five.

Oklahoma Sooners: This is arguably one of the most historic and popular rivalries in college football. Known simply as the Red River Shootout, but the name has changed over the years as it was briefly named the SBC Red River Rivalry as the name was used in 2005 to distance the game from gun violence and then the AT&T Red River Showdown in 2014 after AT&T became a sponsor and finally, the  Allstate Red River Rivalry used in 2023 after Allstate secured naming rights for the annual game.

TCU Horned Frogs: The rivalry intensified once the Horn Frogs joined the Big 12, fueled by both teams’ success in conference play. They have played one another every year from 2012 to 2023 but that is changing with the Longhorns’ move to the SEC. This matchup has become increasingly competitive throughout the past four years with each game being decided by a touchdown or less.

Texas A&M Aggies: The Lone Star Showdown is arguably one of the top three fierce and intense in-state rivalries with deep-rooted animosity between the two schools. The move of Texas to the SEC has only intensified the rivalry as these two teams will play one another in football for the first time since 2011.

Arkansas Razorbacks: Although not as intense of a rivalry in the 21st century compared to the 20th century since these two schools have played one another only six times this century, the rivalry with Arkansas has historical significance and carries importance for both fanbases and is revised since both schools are now in the SEC.

Nebraska Cornhuskers: Although the Cornhuskers left the Big 12 in 2012, there is still a great deal of animosity among alums and fans of both teams. Though the two programs have only faced off 14 times, a good number of those matches have been exciting with them playing one another three times in the Big 12 Championship game. The last four times they have played one another, the games have been decided by seven or less points.

Rice Owls: The Longhorns and Owls were conference rivals years ago in the Southwest Conference from 1915 to 1995. The Longhorns have played the Owls nearly a hundred times on the football field throughout the years.

Baylor Bears: While not always at the same level as the other in-state rivals, the in-state rivalry with Baylor has grown in intensity, especially with Baylor’s success in recent years with the Bears winning two of the last five games they have played one another. However, like TCU, these two teams are unlikely to play one another with the Longhorns now in the SEC.

Texas Tech Red Raiders: The last time that these two teams did not play one another was way back in 1959. In the Battle For The Chancellor’s Spurs, this rivalry has been intense and high-scoring recently in games going back to 2015. The Longhorns have the upper hand in this historic meeting but Texas Tech even if they lose to Texas, they make the games more interesting than not in terms of the final score.

Oklahoma picked to finish eighth in 2024 preseason SEC media poll

Oklahoma picked 8th in preseason media poll.

You’d have to go back quite a while before a preseason conference poll didn’t have Oklahoma as one of the top three teams in that conference. However, in 2024, with the Sooners joining the SEC, Brent Venables’ squad is doing just that as they stare down a predicted eighth-place finish by the SEC media on Friday afternoon.

After a fun week of media days that saw the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns acclimate themselves to their new conference, SEC media members voted on preseason accolades, the media poll, and the preseason champion.

Oklahoma’s eighth-place finish isn’t farfetched in a conference where the caliber of teams has risen dramatically. The Sooners will have to earn their respect.

Here’s how the rest of the SEC shakes out in front of the boys in Crimson and Cream.

Once again, the Georgia Bulldogs are the preseason favorite to win the conference. Oddly, the Texas Longhorns aren’t being treated in a similar fashion to the Oklahoma Sooners despite OU’s win over the Longhorns just last year. Alabama, Ole Miss, LSU, Missouri and Tennessee also slot in front of them.

Here’s the kicker for the Sooners: They are scheduled to play every team picked ahead of them, with the exception of Georgia.

If the Sooners feel disrespected, and it’s hard to imagine they don’t, they have an entire season to prove the voters wrong. They can make liars out of everyone who voted against them.

Oklahoma will head into the season with plenty of questions, which is a central reason many are doubting the Sooners’ chance of pushing for a top-three or four finish in the conference.

Questions about [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag]’s readiness, Oklahoma’s revamped offensive line, and how Oklahoma’s defense will respond to another year in Brent Venables system. Each of these questions casts doubt on the new SEC members as they try to garner the respect of their new peers.

One thing is for certain, the Oklahoma Sooners shouldn’t lack motivation at any point this year.

Trio of Oklahoma Sooners earn All-SEC preseason honors

Trio of Oklahoma Sooners named to the All-SEC presason teams. Two defenders garner first-team selections.

It’s been a banner week for the Oklahoma Sooners as they took part in their first media day festivities as official members of the SEC.

SEC media days were held in Dallas, Texas, where the Sooners are quite familiar. They recruit the Dallas-Fort Worth area well but also play their biggest rival in the city.

Brent Venables was accompanied by his two defensive leaders and the former five-star quarterback they recruited specifically to lead them into this new era of football.

While the media days were a fun experience, the Sooners now eagerly looking forward to fall camp, which is less than two weeks away. That’s the final step in their journey toward what promises to be an incredibly entertaining 2024 season.

On Friday, the SEC released its preseason All-SEC teams, and three players represented the Sooners.

Danny Stutsman, Oklahoma’s fearless leader and starting linebacker, was named to the first team alongside fellow playmaking senior Billy Bowman. Deion Burks, one of the new Sooners, made it onto the third team at wide receiver.

Stutsman is the lifeblood of the team on and off the field. He’s a vocal leader but also one of the best players on the team. The native of Florida passed up the opportunity to get drafted in the NFL draft this past April. He returned and was a first-team selection to the preseason Walter Camp All-American squad. Last year, he recorded 104 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, three sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception return for a touchdown in 2023.

Billy Bowman faced a similar question with the NFL draft but elected to return and is set to anchor the Sooners’ secondary. Last season, Bowman totaled six interceptions, three of which he returned for touchdowns. One of Bowman’s most significant plays of the year was a game-changing 100-yard pick six against BYU that helped OU take down the Cougars for the first time in program history. The Sooners had to play the entire second half without starting quarterback Dillon Gabriel.

Burks transferred from Purdue in the offseason, and from the moment he touched campus, it was evident he is poised to be a big-time player for the Sooners offense. He’ll occupy the slot wide receiver spot, which Drake Stoops has handled for the last few years. Burks is a blur and a much more explosive vertical threat.

Last year for Purdue, he led the Boilermakers with 47 receptions for 629 yards and seven touchdowns. In the April Red/White Spring Game, Burks caught five passes for 174 yards and two long touchdowns, as no one in the Sooners secondary could slow him down.

Oklahoma may not have received a high number of accolades, but the SEC has already taken notice of Sooners on both sides of the ball.

Oklahoma QB commit Jaden O’Neal named top performer at UA Future 50

Sooners QB commit, and four-star prospect, Jaden O’Neal shines bright at UA Future 50 event.

Oklahoma’s quarterbacking future is in excellent hands. The Sooners have depth on the current roster and have talented quarterbacks committed from the classes of 2025 and 2026.

Oklahoma’s latest quarterback, [autotag]Jaden O’Neal[/autotag], chose the Sooners during the last week of June over offers from Miami, Washington, Ohio State, and Florida State.

With his recruitment over, O’Neal’s number one objective is to continue improving as a quarterback so that he’s even better equipped when he officially joins the Sooners in 2026.

O’Neal took his talents to Under Armour’s Future 50 event, where some of high school football’s top 50 underclassmen are invited to train and compete in an intense two-day summer camp at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.

They utilize combined training and skill development sessions that are capped off by a competitive 7-on-7 competition.

Cody Bellaire of On3 recruiting shared his takeaways from the second day of the session, and he mentioned Jaden O’Neal as his third-best performer of the day.

Brady Hart wasn’t the only quarterback that shined out on the field during Saturday morning’s workout. Jaden O’Neal was out there throwing darts today. It felt like every station he moved to throughout the day he got better and better. He is able to generate so much velocity on the football and makes it look so effortless. He utilizes that dense build of his to get so much zip onto the football and he can air it out with ease. O’Neal showed excellent mobility and clean mechanics on the move as well. Even when he had to throw off-platform and rely mostly on his arm, he was able to show off the natural arm talent and ability to throw an accurate football. O’Neal has one of the bigger arms early on in the 2026 cycle and put together a stellar showing on Saturday. – Bellaire, On3

One recurring theme in O’Neal’s game is how effortless he looks as a passer. He has the arm talent to make every throw needed. His one area of improvement that other analysts have keyed in on is being more of a threat from outside of the pocket, and it looks like O’Neal was able to showcase his ability to throw on the move.

Oklahoma and [autotag]Seth Littrell[/autotag] have identified a talented player and should be extremely excited about what he can bring to Norman.

The Huskers will continue their 2024 season with one less player in their main lineup.

The Huskers will continue their 2024 softball season without their star player. Jordyn Bahl announced that she will be redshirted for the remainder of the season after suffering an ACL injury.

Bahl’s injury occurred in her Husker debut against Washington in the third inning. USC quarterback and likely No. 1 pick Caleb Williams declares for the NFL draft

The 2022 Heisman Trophy winner ends his collegiate career with 10,082 career passing yards, 93 passing touchdowns, 27 rushing touchdowns, and 14 interceptions.

In one of the least shocking announcements of the college football offseason, USC quarterback and 2022 Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams announced he would declare for the 2024 NFL Draft on Monday.

“Since I was 10, all I ever wanted to do was play football,” Williams said in the social media announcement. “I’m ready to do whatever it takes.”

The heavy favorite to be both the first quarterback and the first player drafted in April, Williams ends his collegiate career with 10,082 career passing yards, 93 passing touchdowns, 27 rushing touchdowns, and 14 interceptions in just 34 full games of work with the Trojans and Oklahoma.

He became the eighth underclassman to win the Heisman Trophy in 2022, a season that saw him throw for 4,537 yards, score 52 total touchdowns, and throw just five interceptions.

Despite not replicating his Heisman status, he actually increased his completion percentage from 66.6% to 68.6% and his yards per attempt from 9.1 to 9.4 this past season, and the USC offense averaged more points per game in 2023 (41.8) than in 2022 (41.4). However, the nation’s 121st-ranked scoring defense held the Trojans down to 7-5.

Williams and UNC quarterback Drake Maye will be the top names atop NFL draft boards over the coming months.

These are the best games to check out in the Big 12 on Saturday.

The Big 12 is one of the deepest basketball conferences in the country with five teams ranked in the top 25 of the USA TODAY Sports coaches poll.

It certainly makes for some interesting basketball in conference play. You can add that Texas, Cincinnati, Iowa State, TCU, and Texas Tech are all worthy of being ranked as well. Welcome to the murderer’s row of basketball.

With the college football season finished, eyes are coming back to the hardwood just in time for the run to March. On Saturday, there are plenty of games in the Big 12 to keep an eye on but here are the best ones.

No. 9 Oklahoma Sooners at No. 3 Kansas Jayhawks

NATHAN J. FISH/THE OKLAHOMAN / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Oklahoma Sooners and Kansas Jayhawks are both coming off disappointing losses for different reasons. The TCU Horned Frogs were able to take down OU thanks to the Sooners’ inability to score consistently in an 80-71 loss. Oklahoma trailed 78-61 with under two minutes to go but only managed a 10-2 run to cut the lead to nine before the final buzzer. On the other hand, Kansas built a nice first half lead at 35-19 with under four minutes to go. The Knights outscored the Jayhawks 46-25 over the next 24 minutes of basketball.

Who will get off the snide and avoid back-to-back losses just three games into Big 12 play? Tune in for the game at 1 p.m. CT on ESPN+.

No. 2 Houston Cougars at TCU Horned Frogs

Chris Jones-USA TODAY Sports

The aforementioned TCU Horned Frogs will host the No. 2 team in the country in the early evening hours. The Houston Cougars are coming off their first loss of the season to a stingy Iowa State squad. The Cougars have averaged 75.3 points per game but were held to 22 points under that number by the Cyclones’ defense. They forced Houston to turn the ball over 16 times in that game. On the other side, you have a TCU squad that is coming off the upset victory of No. 3 Kansas, can they keep it going against No. 2 Houston? The plan should be the same as the Oklahoma matchup, keep your turnovers to a minimum while forcing the Cougs into making mistakes.

Does TCU get another huge win or does Houston rebound? Tune into that game at 5 p.m. CT on ESPN.

Bonus Game: Kansas State Wildcats at Texas Tech Red Raiders

Olivia Raymond/For the Avalanche-Journal / USA TODAY NETWORK

Jerome Tang (Kansas State) and Grant McCasland (Texas Tech) were longtime assistants for Scott Drew at Baylor, now they are adversaries. On Saturday, Texas Tech looks to extend their longest winning streak in the conference to 9 games. They are 2-0 in conference play after knocking off Texas and Oklahoma State. Kansas State is also 2-0 after wins over UCF and West Virginia.

Which team stays unbeaten in Big 12 play? Tune in at 3 p.m. CT on ESPN2

Former Husker Casey Thompson commits to Oklahoma

A former Husker is returning home to finish his college football career.

A former Husker is returning home to finish his college football career. Quarterback Casey Thompson announced on Twitter that he is transferring to Oklahoma for his final year of eligibility.

Top transfer quarterback Dillon Gabriel commits to Oregon

The Sooners quarterback finished inside the nation’s top 10 in passing yards, touchdowns, and yards per attempt in 2023.

Former Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel announced his transfer destination on Saturday, as he committed to Oregon to play for Dan Lanning and the Ducks.

While at the helm of the Sooners in 2023, Gabriel was one of the most productive quarterbacks in college football last season. He finished fifth in the FBS in yards per attempt (9.5), sixth in passing yards (3,660), eighth in passing touchdowns (30), and ninth in completion percentage (69.3%). He threw for five touchdowns in two separate games, and he threw for 285 yards in the Sooners’ upset rivalry win over Texas.

It was a surprise to see a quarterback of Gabriel’s pedigree leave a school as accomplished as Oklahoma, but the Sooners have five-star recruit Jackson Arnold right behind him on the depth chart, who is surely ready to take over the program.

Oregon will be Gabriel’s third different school. He spent the last two seasons with Oklahoma and played for the UCF Knights from 2019-21. His 14,865 passing yards are the eighth-most in FBS history, and he only needs 4,353 yards next season to pass Houston legend Case Keenum as the all-time leader.

Gabriel will replace Heisman Trophy finalist Bo Nix, who led the country with a 77.2% completion percentage and threw 40 touchdowns this season while leading the Ducks to an 11-2 record.
