Huskers suffer major 8-1 defeat to Northwestern on Saturday

Nebraska fell to 27-21 on the season and 10-8 in conference play.

The Nebraska softball team entered the second game of its series against Northwestern on Saturday. The Huskers and the Wildcats originally entered Saturday with a doubleheader set, but the second game got pushed back due to weather. The first game resulted in an 8-1 defeat for Nebraska.

The Huskers and Northwestern played scoreless for the first couple of innings. The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead over the Huskers in the third and scored six runs in the final two innings to take the win.

Northwestern finished the game with nine hits and eight RBIs, while Nebraska delivered five hits for one RBI. The Huskers also left seven runners on baseball, including five in scoring position.

Emmerson Cope delivered Nebraska’s lone run, a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth. Ava Bredwell led Nebraska in hits, going 2-for-4, the only Husker with multiple hits in the loss.

Nebraska softball falls short to first place Northwestern 6-5

The Huskers commenced their final home series of the season against first-place Northwestern Friday night. Nebraska battled Northwestern throughout the night, but the Wildcats ultimately got the edge over the Huskers.

Northwestern and Nebraska entered the seventh deadlocked 4-4 after Northwestern took a 4-2 lead. But a sacrificial fly and a wild pitch pushed the Wildcats to a 6-4 lead. The Huskers attempted a comeback, which consisted of a solo home run by Emmerson Cope to cut the lead down 6-5 but could not manage another run.

Nebraska finished with eight hits while Northwestern delivered six, but the Huskers brought in just one of seven runners in scoring position. The Wildcats finished with four RBIs off two sacrificial flies, a solo home run, and a single. Northwestern earned its other two runs off the aforementioned wild pitch and a fielding error.

Samantha Bland started the game with a two-run home run in the first to put Nebraska up 2-0. Katelyn Caneda then hit a two-RBI single in the sixth to tie the game 4-4. The duo led the Huskers in RBIs.

Nebraska falls to 27-20 on the season and 10-7 in conference play. The Huskers will conclude the series against Northwestern on Saturday in a doubleheader. Game one is set for 11 a.m. with game two to follow at 1:30 p.m., with both games being broadcasted on B1G+.

Nebraska softball concluded its three-game series against Michigan. The Huskers fell to the Wolverines in the first two outings, and the trend continued following their 11-3 six-inning loss on Sunday.

This is the first Big Ten series of the season. Nebraska suffered a sweep, and it came in a struggling fashion. Michigan erupted in the third and fourth innings, scoring nine runs, before closing out with two runs in the sixth.

Kaylin Kinney suffered the loss in the pitching circle, allowing five runs in 3.0 innings. Caitlynn Neal pitched in the fourth inning and allowed four runs. Emmerson Cope pitched the final 1.1 innings and allowed two runs on only one hit.

Offensively, the Huskers finished with six hits and two RBIs in the game. Peyton Cody and Bella Bacon produced Nebraska’s lone RBIs, with Cody hitting one in the fourth inning and Bacon producing hers in the sixth.

Nebraska falls to 25-19 on the season and 8-6 in Big Ten play. The Huskers will return home Tuesday to face off against Iowa in a doubleheader. Game one is set for 4 p.m., and game two is set for 6:30 p.m., and both games can be viewed on Big Ten Network.

It was a tough defeat for Nebraska on Sunday afternoon.

The Huskers concluded their three-game series against Penn State on Sunday afternoon. Nebraska battled the Nittany Lions throughout the day, needing three extra innings to determine the winner. However, the Huskers fell in the end 6-5.

Nebraska led 4-2 heading into the seventh before Penn State tied the game to force extra innings. The Nittany Lions took the lead in the tenth, going up 6-4. The Huskers attempted a comeback, cutting the deficit to one, but fell short.

Caitlynn Neal led Nebraska in RBIs, finishing with three in the loss. Neal delivered an RBI single in the second, then a two-run home run in the sixth inning. Peyton Cody also delivered an RBI, hitting a home run in the bottom of the 10th.

Kaylin Kinney started in the pitching circle, pitching for 9.1 innings. On the day, Kinney faced 37 batters, tossing four strikeouts and surrendering six runs.

The Huskers fall to 23-14 on the season and will travel east to face Rutgers in a three-game series. The first game is set for 2 p.m. on Friday afternoon.

The Nebraska softball team entered its second game of the series against Penn State on Saturday afternoon. The Huskers bounced back from their 2-1 loss to the Nittany Lions on Friday night by delivering a monster fifth inning, earning a 10-2 win.

Nebraska finished the game with nine hits to earn its ten runs. In the fifth inning, the Huskers delivered seven of their runs off five hits, ending the game in five innings. Penn State scored its two runs in the fourth, cutting Nebraska’s lead to 3-2 before the Huskers’ fifth-inning surge.

Peyton Cody led Nebraska in hitting and RBIs, finishing the day with two hits and three RBIs. Caitlynn Neal earned two RBIs in the win, hitting a two-RBI double in the fifth. Billie Andrews capped off the fifth inning with a two-run home run.

Sarah Harness earned the win in the circle, pitching for 3.0 innings and facing ten batters. Harness threw two strikeouts and surrendered one hit and one run. Kaylin Kinney got the save for Nebraska, going three-up, three-down in the fifth.

It was a pitchers duel on Friday evening.

The Huskers commenced their three-game series against Penn State on Friday night. Nebraska battled the Nittany Lions in a low-scoring duel but failed to come out on top, falling 2-1 and snapping its six-game winning streak.

The Huskers finished the game with two hits, even scoring in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. But Penn State responded in the sixth inning, delivering a two-run home run to take the lead and the win.

Billie Andrews scored the Huskers’ only run. She reached first base on a leadoff error before Brooke Andrews delivered a double to bring her to third. A passed ball brought her home.

Kaylin Kinney started in the circle for Nebraska, pitching a complete game, tossing five strikeouts, and surrendering five hits and two runs. Bridget Nemeth also completed a full game for Penn State, throwing four strikeouts and surrendering two hits and one run to move to 16-1 on the season.

The Huskers earned a milestone victory on Tuesday.

The Nebraska softball team returned home Tuesday to host Kansas. The Huskers shut out the Jayhawks while scoring four runs to snatch the program’s 1,600th win.

Nebraska finished the night with nine hits for four RBIs to earn its four runs. Kansas delivered six hits but could not capitalize, with only one runner making it to third in the game.

Samantha Bland delivered two RBIs on the night for Nebraska, going three-for-three in the batter’s box. Bland’s RBIs occurred in the first and third innings, helping Nebraska build a 2-0 lead.

Brooke and Billie Andrews each had an RBI for the Huskers. Billie hit a solo home run in the sixth, while Brooke finished with three hits and an RBI single in the fourth.

Emerson Cope earned the win in the pitching circle, facing 17 batters across 4.1 innings and surrendering just five hits. Kaylin Kinney claimed the save, taking over for Cope in the final 2.2 innings. Kinney faced nine batters, threw two strikeouts, and allowed just one hit.

In the loss to St. Francis, the Huskers led 2-0 after five innings but failed to capitalize on numerous scoring opportunities. Nebraska finished the game with ten runners left on base. St. Francis took advantage by forcing extra innings before jumping out to take the 6-3 win in eight innings.

Ava Bredwell led Nebraska in the batter’s box, hitting 2-of-3 with a double, a triple, and a walk. Bella Bacon hit a pair of RBIs, while Billie Andrews doubled to extend her hitting streak to 16 games.

Sarah Harness took the loss for Nebraska. Harness started in the circle and tossed 5.0 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits. Emmerson Cope pitched the sixth and seventh innings, allowing two runs on three hits. Harness re-entered the game and pitched the eighth inning, giving up four runs.

Nebraska started the day against Northern Iowa and delivered a 13-3 six-inning victory. The Huskers brought in their 13 runs off 14 hits, including a season-high three home runs. Billie Andrews hit 3-of-4, including her 50th career home run.

Samantha Bland, Katelyn Caneda and Ava Bredwell, the final three hitters in the lineup, combined for five hits, two doubles, a home run and eight RBIs. Sydney Gray also struck a home run in the win.
