Trade deadline preview: Clippers’ wing and frontcourt depth among concerns

HoopsHype examines the Los Angeles Clippers’ biggest needs as we approach the trade deadline, as well as specific players they could target.

The Los Angeles Clippers, just past the midway point of the 2019-20 season, sit at 31-14, No. 3 in the West and boast the league’s No. 5 net rating (+6.2), all while only having their two big acquisitions from the summer, Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, together for 18 games. In those 18 outings, the Clippers have been at another level, winning 14 times and dropping just four.

Even so, Leonard’s ongoing load management and George’s inconsistent health this year do bring some concern that Los Angeles could lag behind the NBA’s other top contenders in the chemistry department, an issue that is reportedly already starting to sprout, according to a report from The Athletic.

The upcoming trade deadline could be a way for the Clippers to bolster their rotation and stymie potential roster weaknesses.

ROSTER NEEDS

As veteran reporter Marc Stein mentioned on Thursday, the lack of consistent game action for Leonard and George this year could force the team to seek out additional wing depth on the trade market.

What’s more, L.A.’s 35.6 three-point shooting percentage as a team for the season ranks a mediocre 15th league-wide, so whatever wings the Clippers do look at should be of the floor-spacing variety.

Besides on the perimeter, L.A. could also stand to upgrade their frontcourt rotation, where they have just four reliable bigs, only one of whom is anything more than just a decent role player. So an upgrade at big man could also benefit the Clippers, who have an in-town rival loaded in the frontcourt.

POTENTIAL TRADE CANDIDATES

As far as players who the Clippers could put up on the trade block in hopes of strengthening their team, pretty much anyone not named Leonard or George could probably be had for the right price.

That might seem cruel, considering the team won 48 games last season and built a strong culture that helped them land the two superstar wings in the first place, but it’s well-established that owner Steve Ballmer and executive Jerry West don’t mess around when they think they can swing a move that will help the Clippers’ chances.

For what it’s worth, Lou Williams and Patrick Beverley would probably be pretty expensive if another team came calling, so they’re probably the two safest L.A. players who aren’t Leonard or George.

The two guys who rival teams likely would covet most in a potential deal are productive big man Montrezl Harrell and second-year 2-guard Landry Shamet; the former is averaging over 19 points and seven rebounds off the bench but is a pretty so-so defender. Plus, the fact he’s in a contract year and set to get paid this summer could convince L.A. to move him now as opposed to losing him for nothing in the offseason.

Meanwhile, Shamet is a low-maintenance player shooting 41 percent from three for his career and signed to a team-friendly contract through 2021-22, making him a desirable asset to opposing franchises.

POTENTIAL TRADE TARGETS

Based on reports, it’s obvious the Clippers are trying to address what they feel are their biggest needs, in the frontcourt and on the wing.

Some of the players they have been tied to in recent rumors include Phoenix Suns big man Aron Baynes, who would toughen them up on the inside while spacing the floor offensively, Minnesota Timberwolves swingman Robert Covington, an excellent 3-and-D wing fit for any contender, and Chicago Bulls power forward Thaddeus Young, a solid inside scorer who can defend multiple positions.

Other less bandied-about options recently that would also make sense for the Clippers include Andre IguodalaMarcus Morris and Jae Crowder.

Iguodala is still waiting to be freed from purgatory with the Memphis Grizzlies, and would bring championship experience to a team with high expectations this season; Morris and the New York Knicks would rather commit to each other long-term, but contenders, like the Clippers, are still going to very interested in his services; and Crowder had his best game of the season against Los Angeles, and is an experienced 3-and-D wing option who might not be that expensive, which could pique the Clippers’ interest.

TRADE RESTRICTIONS

On their roster, the only trade restriction Los Angeles possesses is that JaMychal Green would need to approve of any trade, which could make him difficult to move.

Besides that, the Clippers cannot reacquire Danilo Gallinari and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander since they traded them within the last 365 days. No need to fret about that anyway, as the Oklahoma City Thunder would probably shut down any trade talks for the latter option anyway.

DRAFT ASSETS

Although they owe three future first-round picks to the Thunder as part of the Paul George deal (2022, 2024 and 2026, specifically) as well as other potential pick swaps, the Clippers can still offer teams their 2020 first-rounder in any theoretical trade, which could come in handy.

They also have a cupboard full of second-round picks to sweeten up potential offers.

WATCH: LeBron James addresses prospect of playing for the Knicks with his son, Bronny

LeBron James’ basketball-playing son, Bronny, continues to be a part of King James’ postgame conversations this week.

LeBron James’ basketball-playing son, Bronny, continues to be a part of King James’ postgame conversations this week.

Following Wednesday’s win versus the Knicks (12-33), the Lakers (35-9) star praised Madison Square Garden, calling it, “the mecca of basketball” and saying it was his favorite place to come play.

A reporter in the scrum around the star viewed that as his opportunity to ask if LBJwould ever plays for the Knicks if the team drafted his son.

Well, LeBron didn’t say no! He did go full-on dad, though.

“My son is in ninth grade, man. We’re tryin’ to worry about what project he’s gotta turn in tomorrow, that’s what we worried about right now,” James said. “That’s what’s most important: school, home and being the best big brother he can be.”

Bronny turned 15-years-old in October and is a high school freshman. So, at the earliest (under current draft rules and without a reclassification), the teenager would be draft-eligible in 2024.

LeBron’s current contract with the lakers expires after to 2021-2022 season, so it’s technically definitely an option that he’s with a different team by the time his son is playing in the league, too.

While the 35-year-old opted not to answer the yes-or-no question outright, he did have this to say back in a 20 18 interview with uninterrupted: “You want to ask me what is the greatest achievement of my life … If I’m on the same court as my son in the NBA, that would be No. 1 in my lifetime as an NBA player. I’ve thought about it because my son is about to be 14, and he might be able to get in there a little earlier.”

Trae Young had an emotional moment when he found out he’s an All-Star Game starter

Trae Young is an All-Star starter in just his second year.

The NBA All-Star Game starters were announced Thursday night, which included a number of big names that we’ve grown used to seeing playing in this game.

But it also included a player who will be making his first appearance in the game, let alone in the East’s starting five – Atlanta Hawks second-year star guard Trae Young.

The fifth overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft is averaging 29.2 points and 8.6 assists through 40 games thus far this season, which is pretty darn impressive.

Young was watching the selections on TNT with teammates and family when he got emotional after hearing his name get called:

That’s what it’s all about right there.

LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo are the captains of the West and East. Here are the rest of the starters:

The All-Star Game will be played on Sunday, Feb. 16 in Chicago.

Watch Lakers vs. Nets Live Online.

The Nets and the Lakers squared off twice in the preseason with Brooklyn sweeping both contests. That was nearly three months ago and October basketball isn’t exactly an indication of where teams will be in January, February or even June. What we do know early on this season is that the Nets are struggling to find wins, while the Lakers look like a championship-caliber team.

LeBron James and Kyrie Irving have a history from their days on the Cavaliers, in which they won a championship. For the first time this season, the two will square-off on the hardwood. Kyrie did not play in Monday night’s 117-111 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, with the team opting to have him rest a tight hamstring. The Nets are currently in eighth place in the Eastern Conference with an 18-24 record and have some internal turmoil with Irving making comments about the team “missing pieces”. They will need Irving to step up and those missing pieces to show up Thursday night if they want to avoid dropping their fifth consecutive game.

While the Nets are struggling against the competition, LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and the Lakers have looked like a true contender for yet another NBA Championship in franchise history. The Lakers first in the Western Conference, but had a rough 139-107 loss to the Celtics and are in the midst of a five-game road trip. Davis leads the team in both points (26.6 per game) and rebounds (9.3), while James is averaging 25.2 points per game and a team-leading 11 assists.

Stephen Curry admits he wanted to be drafted by the Knicks in 2009

Ouch, Knicks fans.

Stephen Curry is the heart and soul of the Golden State Warriors. Over their five year run, Curry has been the centerpiece for everything the Warriors empire stands on.

He’s won three championships, two MVPs and broken record after record over the last half decade as a Warrior. But that’s not how he always envisioned everything going down, apparently.

Before he was drafted, not only did Curry think he was going to the New York Knicks, he WANTED to go to the Knicks.

On Stephen Jackson and Matt Barnes’ “All the Smoke” podcast, the Warriors’ guard told the two former NBA vets that New York was his preferred destination.

“Thinking back, I wanted to go to New York and thought I was going to New York.”

The 2009 draft was already a nightmare for Knicks fans — they were just one pick away from getting Curry, who was selected with the seventh overall pick. Now, they know he actually wanted to come there? Ouch. Just twisting the knife, honestly.

The Knicks ended up selecting Jordan Hill at No. 8, one pick before the Raptors landed DeMar DeRozan. Hill was traded away in his rookie season in a deal that resulted in Tracy McGrady joining the Knicks.

At this point, it’s alright for Knicks fans to beef with the Warriors. Golden State beat them to Curry, they pulled Steve Kerr away. Who’s next?

The only thing that could be worse is losing out on LeBron James ….oh wait.

Fret not, Knicks fans. Your time will come eventually!

It could be worse? Well, probably not. But it could be! Think of it this way. If the Knicks DID get Curry, he’d probably just turn out to be nothing but Jimmer Fredette with busted ankles.

Dwight Howard wants Kobe Bryant’s help in the dunk contest

Howard is asking fans to lobby for Bryant to help him in the dunk contest.

Dwight Howard has always been full of surprises — for good and bad, but mostly bad.

Howard is participating in this year’s NBA dunk contest during All-Star weekend, which came as a surprise when it was first announced. He won his last dunk contest in 2008, but whatever. Who’s counting, right?

But, anyway, that’s not the kicker here. The best part of all this is, now, Howard is telling us that he wants Laker legend Kobe Bryant’s help in the dunk contest this year. After the Lakers’ win over the Knicks on Wednesday night, he asked Lakers fans for their help in getting him.

“I’m trying to get Kobe. So if I can get all the Laker fans to lobby to get Kobe to help me in the dunk contest, that’d be really good. That’d be awesome.”

This is absolutely hilarious on a few levels, as Dwight Howard and Kobe Bryant had one of the most memorable beefs in NBA history.

Howard came to Bryant’s Lakers in hopes of winning a championship in 2012. Instead, the highlight of their season together was the two of them squaring up over their head coach like a couple of nut jobs.

Embarrassing. I know.

Howard eventually left the Lakers after this year and Bryant, in the most Bryant fashion possible, proceeded to hate his guts. He’s called him everything from “soft” to a “teddy bear,” which was somehow supposed to be a compliment.

Maybe this is Dwight’s way of squashing the beef? No idea. Good luck to him either way, though.

Prediction

Mavericks 122, Trail Blazers 110

Moneyline (ML)

The Mavericks have bee one of the best road teams in the NBA this season, going 14-5 away from American Airlines Center. The Blazers are only .500 at home this year (10-10) but 5-6 against the Western Conference.

Dallas is 4-1 in its last five games, most recently losing to the Los Angeles Clippers by a 110-107 count Tuesday night. The Mavs will bounce back with a win over the Blazers, so take DALLAS (-182).

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on the Mavericks to win returns a profit of $5.50.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Dallas is only 22-19-2 ATS this season despite owning an outright record of 27-16. The Mavs have been favored in each of their last 10 last games, going 4-4-2 ATS in that span. However, in their last seven games against the Blazers, the Mavericks are 6-1 ATS.

Portland has covered only once in its last seven games overall, so it has not been good against the spread lately, with most of those games having the Blazers as underdogs.

The Mavericks are favored by 4.5 points on the road, a margin they should be able to easily cover. Bet the MAVERICKS (-4.5, -106) to win by at least 5points.

Over/Under (O/U)

The Mavericks are third in the NBA in scoring this season, averaging 116.4 points per game. The Trail Blazers are only 24th in total defense, so Dallas should be able to hit its average.

The Over is 6-4 in the Mavericks’ last 10 games and 5-5 in Portland’s last 10. The Over/Under in this one is 228.5 points; take the OVER 228.5 (-115). Doncic should have a big night on the road.

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 12:45 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Wizards 122, Cavaliers 114

Moneyline (ML)

Here’s the main reasons why I LOVE WIZARDS +110:  both teams are terrible on defense, but at least Washington can be elite offensively. The Wizards are last in the NBA in defensive rating and opponents’ points per game, while the Cavaliers are second to last in defensive rating and ranked 20th in opponents’ PPG. But the Wizards rank fifth in PPG and assist-to-turnover ratio, 11th in offensive rating and eighth in three-point percentage.

Keep in mind the low spread, the Wizards are 4-1 ATS in the second game of a back-to-back. The Cavaliers are 3-7 outright with a minus-9.1 margin of victory when having a rest advantage over their opponent. Also, the Cavaliers are tied with the worst record (1-3) and has the lowest margin of victory (-3.8) as a home favorite.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

PASS on an against-the-spread bet, and put all the units on the moneyline. However, since the line is so low (and could be a pick ’em come tip-off), here are some applicable ATS trends for this game:

  • Cleveland is 0-3 ATS when laying 1-2.5 points and the Wizards are 3-2 ATS when getting 1-2.5 points.
  • Cavaliers are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games as a favorite.
  • The Cavaliers are tied with the worst record (1-3) and has the lowest margin of victory (-3.8) as a home favorite.

Again, PASS ON an ATS WAGER.

Over/Under (O/U)

Slight LEAN to the OVER 231.5 (-106) because of the over-friendly trends. The Wizards-Cavaliers combined over/under record is 47-39-1 and the Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Cleveland. Furthermore, the Over is 4-1 in Wizards games where they have no rest and the Over is 8-2 in Wizards last 10 road games.

Los Angeles Lakers at Brooklyn Nets odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Thursday’s Los Angeles Lakers at Brooklyn Nets sports betting odds and lines, with NBA betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Los Angeles Lakers (35-9) take on the Brooklyn Nets (18-24) Thursday at Barclays Center. Tip-off for this game is scheduled for 8 p.m. E.T. We analyze the Lakers-Nets sports betting odds and lines, with NBA betting advice and tips around the matchup.

Lakers at Nets: Key injuries

Lakers

  • C DeMarcus Cousins (knee) out

Nets

  • SF Kevin Durant (Achilles) out
  • C DeAndre Jordan (finger) questionable
  • PG Kyrie Irving (hamstring) probable
  • C Nicolas Claxton (shoulder) doubtful

Lakers at Nets: Odds, lines, picks, and betting tips

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 10:30 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Lakers 114, Nets 106

Moneyline (ML)

Despite a record of 35-9 this season, the LAKERS (-239) are just modest favorites over the Nets (+195) Thursday night. While the Lakers played Wednesday night against the New York Knicks, the team is fully healthy entering this contest.

The same can’t be said for the Nets, who are dealing with multiple injuries at the center position. It might not be the prettiest of wins for the Lakers, but expect them to edge out the Nets at Barclay Center.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The LAKERS (-4.5, -128) come into this game as two-basket favorites. While the Lakers have done well against the spread this season, the Nets have not. They have failed to cover the spread in 11 of their last 13 games and are just 18-24 ATS this season. Expect the Nets to keep this one close for a while, but for the Lakers to ultimately cover the spread and win by at least 5 points in Brooklyn.

Over/Under (O/U)

The total for this matchup is set at 229.5, which feels too high considering the Lakers’ defensive ability. When they want to, the Lakers can be one of the best defensive teams in the NBA. The Nets also have just a mediocre offense this season, averaging only 109.3 points per game. Expect both teams to score around 110 points, but for the UNDER 229.5 (-115) to hit Thursday night.

Zion Williamson’s spectacular NBA debut, by the numbers

The Zion Williamson era is here.

No. 1 overall draft pick Zion Williamson finally made his regular-season debut on Wednesday night in New Orleans, and his arrival to the NBA was worth the wait.

Williamson was quiet through most of the game, but exploded in the fourth quarter to give the Pelicans a chance to win the game. Williamson scored 17 consecutive points for the Pelicans in the fourth, but was eventually pulled from the game by coach Alvin Gentry, who was sticking to the Pelicans’ strict plan for Zion’s court time.

If you missed Williamson’s debut, you’re going to want to check out the highlights.

Williamson finished his first career game with 22 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 turnovers in 18 minutes of action. How does that stack up against the debuts of other NBA greats? Let’s take a closer look at the numbers.

1. Williamson had the highest per-minute scoring rate of any player in the shot clock era

2. Williamson’s 17-point streak was historic

3. Williamson’s three-point barrage came out of nowhere

Williamson went 4-for-4 from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter, and as Jrue Holiday noted after the game, Williamson may have been spending his time adding a new weapon to his arsenal. Williamson never hit more than three triples in a game at Duke, and only hit multiple threes in four games with the Blue Devils. He finished his only college season shooting 33 percent from three.

Williamson also became the first player to go 4-of-4 from three in his debut.
