After the Philadelphia 76ers signed Kelly Oubre Jr. late in September, they had 16 players on standard deals. Therefore, President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey had to make a tough decision to get the team to the league’s limit of 15 players with standard contracts ahead of opening night.
That decision was to waive Montrezl Harrell. The Sixers re-signed Harrell after he opted out of his contract with the Sixers. Due to his torn ACL and meniscus, he was the easy one to waive for Philadelphia to get to the 15 standard contract limit.
The Philadelphia 76ers are waiving center Montrezl Harrell, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. Harrell’s ACL/meniscus injury and absence make him the release due to a roster crunch, but he’s aiming to make a return after the All-Star break.

In 57 games for the Sixers in the 2022-23 season, Harrell averaged 5.6 points and 2.8 rebounds. He was the main backup to Joel Embiid to begin the season before giving way to Paul Reed in the second half of the year. He was a good locker room presence for Philadelphia despite the demotion and was a true professional.
