Eagles DC Vic Fangio makes it clear who the starter is at middle linebacker

Vic Fangio says Nakobe Dean is Eagles starting middle linebacker

Nakobe Dean spent the off-season and summer saying all the right things about his recovery from a foot injury that ended his 2023 season prematurely. For most of the training camp, the idea was that Dean might lose his job to Devin White.

White, a 2024 free agent signing, talked about being a team leader and upgrading Philadelphia’s linebacker position. White missed the season opener with a foot injury, and his status for Week 2 is uncertain. It won’t matter, but Vic Fangio clarified that Dean is his starter.

Dean and Fangio’s favorite Zack Baun held down the fort on defense, with the former Saints linebacker logging 15 tackles, two sacks, one tackle for loss, and 2 QB hits. Dean was solid, logging four tackles, one tackle for loss, and one pass defended.

They’ll need to be even more dynamic in Week 2, with Falcons star running back Bijan Robinson heading to Philadelphia.

Saquon Barkley named NFC Offensive Player of the Week after performance vs. Packers

The Giants’ week just got worse, and just days after watching Saquon Barkley’s three-touchdown debut, they’ll have to deal with the stud running back earning a significant award.

Fresh off his dominant performance in a Week 1 win over the Packers in Brazil, Saquon Barkley has been named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week.

It’s his 4th time winning the award and first since Week 1 of 2022.

Barkley had 26 touches in the season opener, logging 132 yards, two rushing touchdowns, and one receiving touchdown while giving the Eagle’s offense a boost of energy and explosiveness that they’ve been missing at the running back position.

Rams sign Eagles sixth-round pick to the active roster off Philadelphia’s practice squad

the Los Angeles Rams are signing center Dylan McMahon off the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad to their active roster

The Dylan McMahon era appears to be over in Philadelphia. The former North Carolina State center and 2024 sixth-round pick is leaving the Eagles practice squad after signing to the Los Angeles Rams active roster.

McMahon’s agent Whitney Holtzman broke the news.

Philadelphia selected the NC State interior guard/center in the sixth round with their final pick of the weekend.

The Rams are banged up after losing Puka Nacua, Steve Avila, and Joe Noteboom in Sunday’s loss to the Detroit Lions. All three players will be sidelined for multiple weeks.

Avila will likely be placed on injured reserve, forcing him to miss at least the next four games. Jordan Schultz reported Monday that Avila is expected to be out for 4-6 weeks, so the Rams will have Beaux Limmer play center, and Jonah Jackson will move back to left guard in his absence, creating the roster spot for McMahon.

Rams right guard Kevin Dotson suffered a “little lateral sprain to his ankle” in Sunday’s loss to the Lions, but McVay said he’ll be considered day-to-day.

Noteboom had to be carted off after spraining his ankle against the Lions. McVay said it’s a high ankle sprain, and he’ll miss a few weeks.

McMahon played in 49 games (44 starts) at NC State, seeing snaps at center, right guard, and left guard, and according to Pro Football Focus, McMahon allowed just one sack on 361 pass block snaps in 2023.

Jalen Carter on 2024: “I got a lot on my shoulder, and I’m ready to step up to the plate”

When you are the No. 9 pick in the NFL draft, the pressure can be enormous for any player. When you’re tasked with replacing Fletcher Cox as the face of the Eagles’ defensive line positions, the pressure rises to another level.

Through the first nine weeks, Carter generated 29 pressures (tied for eighth in the league among interior defensive linemen), according to Pro Football Focus, including four sacks and 20 hurries.

Carter hit the proverbial rookie wall, and his production decreased down the stretch. Now, the player known as Breadman is looking to become an All-Pro, and he told the media that “he’s prepared to carry the enormous weight on his shoulders.”

https://Twitter.com/MrUram/status/1831041797902004326

Carter finished his rookie year with 6.0 sacks, 33 tackles, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery (which he returned for a touchdown) in 16 regular-season games.

Still, Carter started just one game and played 51 percent of the Eagles’ defensive snaps, but the ninth overall pick in the 2023 Draft was third on the team in sacks and fifth among all rookies.

Eagles to sign Jack Driscoll to the practice squad

Philadelphia Eagles to sign Jack Driscoll to the practice squad

Another familiar face has returned to the NovaCare Complex, as former fourth-round pick Jack Driscoll is signing to the practice squad ahead of the team’s matchup against the Green Bay Packers.

Driscoll, 27, was added by the Dolphins as a free agent earlier this year on a one-year deal.

Before joining Miami, the lineman spent four years with the Philadelphia Eagles, who picked him in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL draft.

Former Eagles pass rusher Haason Reddick remains a holdout heading into Week 1

Former Philadelphia Eagles pass rusher Haason Reddick continues to holdout from the New York Jets heading into Week 1

The Jets are less than a week away from opening up the regular season on the road against the 49ers on a Monday night, and their top pass rusher is still not reporting to the team.

After Trent Williams headed to San Francisco to sign a revised contract, former Eagles pass rusher and Jets holdout Haason Reddick remains away from the team.

https://Twitter.com/RichCimini/status/1830970097294549324

Jets GM Joe Douglas didn’t secure a new contract for the pass rusher upon making the trade. Reddick skipped his new team’s voluntary offseason activities, including the mandatory minicamp.

Reddick didn’t attend training camp either and has previously requested a trade.

Last season, Reddick finished 15th in the league with 11 sacks and made his second straight Pro Bowl.

He recorded double-digit sacks for the fourth consecutive season, leading his team in that category and tying for 15th in the NFL. Outside of the sacks, though, Reddick’s numbers were poor by his standards.

His 38 tackles were the second-lowest mark of his career, and he didn’t force or recover a fumble after forcing five and recovering three during the 2022 season.

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jahan Dotson switches jersey number ahead of season opener vs. Green Bay Packers

The Eagles are hitting the practice field on Sunday for their first practice of the regular season as the team starts preparation for a battle against the Green Bay Packers in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Friday night.

With the roster trimmed from 90 players to 53, several players, like Will Shipley and Quinyon Mitchell, have switched jersey numbers. Former Penn State star Jahan Dotson also switched from the No. 87 to the No. 83.

https://Twitter.com/ZBerm/status/1830303966736871680

Dotson, 24, was a 2022 first-round pick from Penn State, and he had 49 catches for 518 yards and four touchdowns as a rookie.

Last season, Dotson logged 35 catches for 523 yards and seven touchdowns and arrived in Philadelphia as the clear No. 3 wide receiver.

Philadelphia Eagles’ roster comparison: 2023 vs. 2024 defense

Last summer, the Eagles entered the 2023 NFL season fresh off a Super Bowl loss while maintaining one of the league’s most dominant defensive units. The Birds lost Jonathan Gannon, who accepted the Cardinals’ coaching job. Sean Desai was inserted as defensive coordinator, and the team jumped out to a 10-1 start before the wheels fell off.

Philadelphia lost six of its final seven games, including a 32-9 blowout loss to the Buccaneers in the wild-card round. Desai was fired as DC and replaced by Vic Fangio, the architect of the scheme. Bryce Huff was signed in free agency, while Haason Reddick was traded away.

With the Eagles just five days away from a much-hyped season-opening matchup against the Packers from Sao Paulo, Brazil, we’re comparing last year’s defensive unit to the 2024 version.

2023: Jalen Carter, Fletcher Cox, Jordan Davis, Moro Ojomo, Kentavius Street, Marlon Tuipulotu, Milton Williams

2024: Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Milton Williams, Moro Ojomo, Byron Young, Thomas Booker

Fletcher Cox has retired, while Byron Jones replaces the departed Marlon Tuipulotu. Thomas Booker and Moro Ojomo offer pass-rush potential.

2023: Derek Barnett, Brandon Graham, Josh Sweat, Patrick Johnson, Haason Reddick, Nolan Smith

2024: Brandon Graham, Josh Sweat, Patrick Johnson, Nolan Smith, Bryce Huff, Jalyx Hunt

Bryce Huff replaces the departed Haason Reddick. Huff is younger than Reddick, and he’s an emerging pass rusher. Jalyx Hunt is an athletic marvel off the edge. Nolan Smith’s progression will be the most scrutinized.

2023: Zach Cunningham, Nakobe Dean, Christian Elliss

2024: Zack Baun, Nakobe Dean, Jeremiah Trotter Jr., Ben VanSumeren, Devin White, Oren Burks

Thanks to another standout training camp, Ben VanSumeren made the Eagles’ 53-man roster, outplaying Oren Burks and others. Devin White offers a Pro Bowl-caliber linebacker.

2023: James Bradberry, Mario Goodrich, Josh Jobe, Avonte Maddox, Eli Ricks. Kelee Ringo, Darius Slay

2024: Cooper DeJean, Quinyon Mitchell, Eli Ricks, Kelee Ringo, Isaiah Rodgers, Darius Slay

After a disappointing finish to 2023, Howie Roseman selected cornerbacks with the first two picks in the 2024 NFL draft. Avonte Maddox is now a safety, along with James Bradberry, while Josh Jobe is with the Seahawks practice squad.

2023: Reed Blankenship, Sydney Brown, Terrell Edmunds, Justin Evans

2024: Reed Blankenship, James Bradberry, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Avonte Maddox, Tristin McCollum

Sydney Brown is on the PUP list and will be a factor in 2024. Reed Blankenship has developed into a solid NFL safety, while C.J. Gardner-Johnson returns the swagger to the Eagles lineup. Tristin McCollum has developed into a solid rotational piece.

Eagles sign defensive back JT Woods to the practice squad

Philadelphia Eagles sign defensive back JT Woods to the practice squad after placing James Bradberry on injured reserve

In the wake of James Bradberry’s tendon injury, the Eagles have added another defensive back to the roster.

The team announced the signing of JT Woods to the practice squad ahead of next Friday night’s season opener in Brazil against the Packers.

https://Twitter.com/Eagles/status/1829614335947124790

Woods (6-2, 193 pounds) was a third-round pick of the Los Angeles Chargers in 2022 out of Baylor. Over his first two seasons, Woods played in 13 games (one start), logging eight tackles.  In his final season at Baylor, Woods tied for the FBS lead with six interceptions; Woods clocked in at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine with a 4.36-second time in the 40-yard dash.
