Ohio State baseball drops rubber match against Lipscomb 4-2

The Ohio State baseball team dropped a 4-2 decision against Lipscomb to finish the series with one win and two losses.

The Ohio State baseball team was hoping to get a win on Sunday to make it a winning weekend in Nashville, but it wasn’t in the cards. Instead, the Buckeyes dropped a 4-2 decision to fall to 3-6 overall on the season.

The Bison got on the board first in the bottom of the 1st inning thanks to a sacrifice fly and led 1-0.

Things then remained scoreless for awhile until Ohio State’s Nick Erwin mashed a two-run homer in the top of 5th inning for a 2-1 lead. But Lipscomb grabbed the lead for good a couple of innings later in the bottom of the 7th on a squeeze and another sac fly to go up 3-2.

The Bison would add one more, and Ohio State could get nothing going on offense the rest of the way. That would be all she wrote.

Starting pitcher Griffan Smith had a solid outing on the mound, hurling six innings of six-hit ball — giving up just one earned run on five strikeouts. Unfortunately for him, the bullpen couldn’t hold the lead and the offense couldn’t crank it up anymore and he was left with a no-decision.

The Buckeyes will now try to turn momentum back around to the positive side of the ledger when it embarks on a three-game swing in DeLand, Florida next weekend. Friday it’ll play Stetson, followed by Harvard and Fairfield Saturday and Sunday.

The Irish offense gave starter Will Mercer an early lead, scoring 3 runs in the top of the first as 2B Jared Miller doubled with the bases loaded to clear the bases. In the second, CF Spencer Myers ran wild, stealing home with DH Carter Putz scoring on a wild pitch to stretch the lead to 5-0 after the top of the 2nd.

The Irish will try and keep their 3-game winning streak alive as they begin the ACC season by traveling to Chapel Hill next weekend. Their series against the Tar Heels is set to start Friday, March 6th at 3:00pm EST.

Longhorns Baseball: Texas-sized upset over No 6 Arkansas

The Texas Longhorns pulled off the upset of number six ranked Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday evening.

After falling to the number 11 ranked Louisiana State Tigers on Friday night, Texas was back at Minute Maid Park to take on an old Southwest Conference foe in the number six ranked Arkansas Razorbacks. Ty Madden took the mound looking to get back on the winning side in the second game of the Shriner’s Hospital for Children College Baseball Classic.

Madden was able to keep the Razorbacks at bay through the first four innings of scoreless baseball. The Longhorns offense went to work after being grounded in the final three innings of their loss to LSU. Zach Zubia started the scoring parade over the early innings with a single that drove in leadoff hitter Austin Todd. Cam Williams drove in the second run on a double play ball that brought Eric Kennedy home.

The offense would explode in the second inning against starter Patrick Wicklander who gave up six runs, four earned in one plus innings pitched. He would be pulled before recording an out in the inning. Kennedy hit a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 5-0 Texas, when Zubia came back to the plate.

The Longhorns finished a six-run second when Cam Williams scored on a throwing error by Arkansas. Madden would go to work with a 8-0 lead, Texas would need ever bit of those eight runs as the number six team in the nation would make a late inning push. Madden pitched six innings throwing 100 pitches. He finished with seven strikeouts, giving up three earned runs. Quality start from the Longhorns number two starter.

Cole Quintanilla lasted just 0.1 innings after giving up two runs allowing Arkansas to get within three runs of Texas after holding a commanding 8-0 lead. Pete Hansen came into the game and shut it down over the next 1.2 to get the game to the ninth. Hansen struck out two batters and allowed just one hit.

It was up to freshman pitcher Andre Duplantier II to close it out in the final inning for Texas to pull off the upset. Duplantier gave up two runs on a Matt Goodheart double that brought the Razorbacks within one, and the tying runner standing at second. The freshman rose to the challenge and got the final outs when Duplantier struck out Casey Opitz and Casey Martin to close the door.

Texas improved to 10-1 on the season. Zubia led all hitters with three RBIs while batting 3-4. The Longhorns look to close out the weekend against another former conference rival in the Missouri Tigers.

In which we compile all of this week’s posts pertaining to former Bulldogs at this week’s NFL Scouting Combine

For those who can’t focus the ideal amount of attention to Georgia football news, I’ll compile some of this week’s posts pertaining to former Bulldogs at the NFL Scouting Combine:

Brian Herrien provides a recollection of Nick Chubb’s encouragement.

Both of Georgia’s invited tailbacks were faster than Florida’s only invited tailback.

D’Andre Swift proved speedier than his two most famous former teammates.

J.R. Reed can do it all.

Charlie Woerner is a man among boys.

In other news:

The basketball Bulldogs stuck out a nervous victory over Arkansas sealed by an Anthony Edwards dunk.

The baseball Bulldogs embarrassed Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Fewer than twenty hours prior, Scott Stricklin’s Bulldogs edged out the Yellow Jackets by a score of six to five.

Georgia baseball’s Tucker Bradley leads the SEC in home runs

With a fat dinger and a subsequent bat flip, Georgia’s Tucker Bradley sank the hopes of in-state rival Georgia Tech.

With a fat dinger and a subsequent (and well-earned) bat flip, Georgia’s Tucker Bradley sank the hopes of in-state rival Georgia Tech.

His sixth home run of the still-young 2020 college baseball season places him atop the list of the Southeasten Conference’s home run hitters.

Fourth-ranked Georgia didn’t need any more homers from Bradley today when topped Tech 12-0, ranked No. 17 but likely sinking in next week’s polls following two consecutive losses.

Bulldog Garrett Blaylock is close to the top with four home runs.

In the previous matchup, Georgia outlasted Georgia Tech in the series opener by a score of 6-5 at Foley Field.

As part of a neutral series between in-state foes, the three-game stand features one game at Georgia’s Foley Field, another at Tech’s stadium at 255 Ferst Drive in Atlanta, and a third contest at Coolray Field, the home of Atlanta Braves AAA affiliate Gwinnett Stripers.

Georgia baseball blanks Georgia Tech 12-0, wins season series

Tech needed a miracle entering the ninth, but the away team scored eight runs in the inning’s top half to put the game away for good.

Who runs this state?

In the past three months, the Georgia Bulldogs have clinched victories over the in-state Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in football, men’s basketball, and baseball.

Following last night’s dramatic victory at Foley Field in Athens, the Dawgs ensured that the next contest, held on Tech’s campus, would be less of a nail-biter for Georgia baseball fans.

Scott Stricklin’s fourth-ranked Bulldogs built an early 4-0 lead across the first five innings. Tech already needed a miracle entering the ninth, but the away team scored eight runs in the inning’s top half to put the game away for good.

The Bulldogs improve to 10-1 on the season.

Notre Dame Baseball Defeats Presbyterian 10-4, Clinch Series Win

Irish score double digits again, beat Presbyterian 10-4 and got for series sweep tomorrow.

The Link Jarrett era has gotten off to a fantastic start, and with today’s win over Presbyterian, the Irish have won their first three series this year. The offense once again was impressive; 1B Niko Kavadas hit another homer, his 3rd of the series, to pace the Irish.

The offense wasted no time, as they scored three runs in the 1st, 2B Jared Miller singled home a run before Kavadas’ long ball. A run in each the second and fourth, catcher Jack Alexander drove in 3B Jack Brannigan and then Brannigan drove himself in with a solo homer.

Starter Alex Rao cruised through his first three innings then ran into trouble in the bottom of the 4th giving up three runs. Rao got out of the jam but that inning ended his day, with the Irish offense getting one run back in the top of the fifth on left fielder Ryan Cole’s single.

Presbyterian would score their final run off reliever Dominic Cancellieri to get within two runs at 6-4, but the Irish offense was not finished scoring 4 more runs in the final two innings. Reliever Joe Boyle got the win as Notre Dame’s record improved to 6-2. The Irish have an opportunity to bring out the brooms and sweep Presbyterian tomorrow when first pitch is set for 11:00am EST.
