Ohio State baseball goes wild Sunday, takes series at West Virginia

That was one heck of a getaway day performance from the Bucks

While Game 1 of the series didn’t go Ohio State baseball’s way against host West Virginia, the rest of the games sure did.

Friday night saw the Buckeyes lose 5-2, but on Saturday they woke up during the sixth inning. Trailing 4-3 heading into the top of the frame, Ohio State scored two runs to take the lead, then another two the next inning to get the win 7-4.

Sunday was all about the Buckeyes offense, as they scored 26 runs to take the series and get their season record above .500 at 10-8. The first, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth all saw Ohio State score multiple runs in those innings.

The biggest two were the sixth and eighth, where they scored right and seven runs respectively. Third baseman Tyler Pettorini led the charge with five RBIs, while outfielder Isaac Cadena, shortstop Henry Kaczmar, catcher Matthew Graveline, second baseman Joseph Mershon, outfielder Mitchell Okuley, designated hitter Nick Giamarusti, and pinch hitter Hank Thomas all had at least two RBI on the day.

Ohio State finally gets its home portion of the schedule started when it hosts Georgetown this weekend for a three-game series in Bill Davis Stadium.

Ohio State baseball beats West Virginia to even weekend series

Back above .500 #GoBucks

It’s been one up and down early season for the Ohio State baseball team and that continued on Saturday. After dropping the first game to West Virginia Friday night, the Buckeyes bounced back for a 7-4 win in Morgantown on Saturday night.

OSU jumped ahead of the Mountaineers early on by plating three runs in the top of the first inning. Tyler Pettorini singled in the first run, followed by Matt Graveline scoring on an error. Nick Giamarusti then finished the first inning scoring with an RBI single to his credit.

West Virginia would even the score with three runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth inning, and then take its first lead of the game, 4-3, in the bottom of the fifth with another score.

Ohio State would answer quickly though in the top of the sixth inning when Hank Thomas went yard for a two-run homer to give the Buckeyes the lead again, 5-4.

The OSU pitching would should down the Mountaineers from there and OSU would score two more times thanks to an RBI double from Joshua Stevenson and an RBI single by Thomas. Closer Justin Eckhardt would close the door in the ninth inning to give the Buckeyes the victory.

With the win, OSU runs its record to 9-8 and will play the rubber match against West Virginia on Sunday afternoon.

Ohio State baseball loses big to Cal Poly

OSU took it on the chin Saturday out in Cali. #GoBucks

The Ohio State baseball team took it on the chin Saturday, losing to the Cal Poly Mustangs by a score of 19-2.

Things were tied at one run a piece after two innings, but the dam broke open in third inning with Cal Poly plating three runs to take a 4-1 lead. It got even worse from there after the Buckeyes were able to close the gap to 4-2 thanks in large part to a triple by Joseph Mershon. He was brought home by a Zach Fjelstad double in the top of the fifth inning.

Then, things got ugly. Cal Poly got to OSU pitching in the bottom of the sixth inning by putting a whopping 14 runs on the board to put the game out of reach.

All told, the Mustangs strung together 21 hits to just six for Ohio State. Colin Purcell took the loss for the Buckeyes, giving up four runs on ten hits. His record falls to 1-2 on the season and Ohio State’s record moves to 6-6 on the season with another game against the Mustangs to take place Sunday at 4:00 PM ET.

Ohio State baseball sweeps weekend, gets above .500 again

The Bucks had a great weekend on the diamond. #GoBucks

It has been a back-and-forth early portion of the season for Ohio State baseball, and it finally made a push to get over the .500 mark this past weekend.

While playing in the Las Vegas College Baseball Classic, the Buckeyes won on Friday night, 9-4, over California and then Saturday’s game against Pittsburgh was canceled due to inclement weather.

The finale on Sunday was a nail bitter, as Ohio State rallied late, scoring 2-runs in the top of the 9th to defeat Oklahoma 4-3 and return to Columbus with a series victory.

Multiple Buckeyes were honored for their play this weekend as Colin Purcell, Henry Kaczmar, Trey Lipsey, and Landon Beidelschies were all honored on the All-Tournament team.

The two wins put the Buckeyes at 6-4 early in the year, with a 4-game series at Cal Poly set for next weekend.

Ohio State baseball splits series on the road against Arizona State

The Buckeyes return to Columbus with a series split, #GoBucks

The Ohio State baseball team had an opportunity to take a road series against Arizona State on Sunday afternoon, but it ended up falling short.

The Buckeyes won on Thursday, 11-4, lost on Friday, 14-4 and won on Saturday, 13-4, giving them a chance at winning the series on Sunday. The high scoring contest went the favor of the Sun Devils, as they put up 10 runs to Ohio State’s eight.

The loss puts the Buckeyes at even on the year, 4-4, and now they will have a break until Friday when they hit the road again to take on three different teams in the Las Vegas College Baseball Classic.

After the top of the fifth, Ohio State held a 7-5 and 8-6 leads, but its pitching failed it over the final half of the game. First baseman Ryan Miller had 3 RBIs while Henry Kaczmar had 2. Pitcher Hunter Shaw took the loss, giving up four runs in just 1/3 of an inning.

Ohio State baseball starts the season off with a road series victory

The Buckeye baseball team had a great weekend in Phoenix

All across the country, collegiate baseball got its start this past weekend and the Ohio State baseball team started off the year right with a road series victory.

Starting on Friday, they faced off against three different opponents in the Desert Invitational in Phoenix, Arizona. The Buckeyes lost the opener to Boston College 9-2, but rebounded quickly.

On Saturday Ohio State defeated Brigham Young 7-2 and then faced off against a future Big Ten opponent in USC on Sunday night on MLB.TV. The Buckeyes defeated the Trojans 5-2, finishing their opening weekend with a 2-1 record.

Offensively, it was Tyler Pettorini and Henry Kaczmar leading with way with 4 RBI each. On the mound, two of the Buckeyes starters, Colin Purcell and Gavin Bruni, each went five innings and allowed just one run.

The Buckeyes will stay out in the Phoenix-area for the remainder of the week as they return to the diamond on Tuesday to face Grand Canyon University.  They’ll take on Arizona State in their weekend series before heading back to Columbus.

WATCH: Two former Ohio State athletes talk about mental health on CNN

Buckeyes supporting Buckeyes. Love to see it #GoBucks

If you didn’t know, there is a former [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] athlete that is all over your screen on CNN, [autotag]Phil Mattingly[/autotag].

The former Buckeye infielder has carved out an extremely successful broadcasting career on the news network and Mattingly had an opportunity to return to his collegiate stomping grounds and speak with another former Ohio State athlete, [autotag]Harry Miller[/autotag].

If you don’t remember, Miller retired from playing for the football team due to his mental health battle. It was something that many of us didn’t expect, but the former lineman has taken his time away from the game seriously, becoming an advocate for mental health.

In a segment called “Champions for Change,” Mattingly sits down with Miller along with head coach, [autotag]Ryan Day,[/autotag] and Ohio State Sport Psychologist, [autotag]Charron Sumler[/autotag]. Watch their touching segment below.

It’s great to see all these efforts to getting the word out on a topic we can’t talk enough about. We love to see it and hope to continue the discussion.

Watch: Former Ohio State baseball star Dominic Canzone makes highlight catch

Good enough to make the evenings top plays? #GoBucks

[autotag]Dominic Canzone[/autotag] is making [autotag]Ohio State baseball[/autotag] fans extremely proud of his recent MLB success.

The Cleveland native starred for the Buckeyes from 2017-2019 before being drafted by the [autotag]Arizona Diamondbacks[/autotag]. Canzone made his major league debut earlier this year for the club that drafted him, but was sent to the [autotag]Seattle Mariners[/autotag] during a trade deadline deal.

The move opened up more playing time for him, and Canzone has made the most of it, especially on defense. Thursday night against the Tampa Bay Rays, the left fielder made a highlight reel catch, running into the wall, falling into the stands and holding on for the out. Watch for yourself below.

Although Canzone has struggled at the plate, hitting just .231 on the season, he’s making much more of an impact than the stats would show.

The first of many! Congrats Dominic! #GoBucks

Through the first four-plus games of former [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] baseball star [autotag]Dominic Canzone[/autotag]’s first taste of Major League Baseball, he was still searching for his first hit.

After starting Tuesday night’s game against the Atlanta Braves and going 0-for-4, Canzone stepped up to the plate with his Arizona Diamondbacks down a run. The outfielder who started as the designated hitter came up with a clutch base hit right field to tie the game at 13 in the bottom of the 8th inning.

Canzone was visibly excited, who wouldn’t be? His first major league hit, and first RBI at an important juncture in the game that helped his team get a victory.

Check out Canzone’s first MLB hit and RBI in the video below and congrats Dominic!

Former Ohio State baseball player Dominic Canzone gets major league call up

Former Ohio State outfielder Dominic Canzone got called up to the majors with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday.

There aren’t too many former Ohio State baseball players out there playing at the game’s highest level, but you can now follow a former outfielder that’s playing out in Arizona. That’s because former Buckeye shortstop Dominic Canzone was called up by the Diamondbacks on Friday.

Canzone, who played for the Buckeyes from 2017 to 2019 and put together an impressive career, batting .336 with 23 home runs and 114 RBIs during his three years in Columbus.

The northeast Ohio native played in 71 games the season at Triple-A Reno where he batted .354 and hit 16 home runs with RBIs. He also scored 60 runs.

Now Canzone will get a chance to live out his lifelong dream of making a name for himself in the majors and all of Buckeye Nation will be cheering him on. We’re pretty sure Diamondback fans will as well.
