Trade alert: Lions to acquire EDGE Za’Darius Smith from the Browns

Trade alert: Lions to acquire EDGE Za’Darius Smith from the Browns for draft picks

After several weeks of trade rumors and suggestions flying all over the place, the Detroit Lions have indeed completed a deal. The Lions are acquiring veteran EDGE Za’Darius Smith from the Cleveland Browns ahead of Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline.

Trade details

The Lions get EDGE Za’Darius Smith and a 7th-round pick in 2026 from Cleveland

Cleveland gets Detroit’s 5th rounder in 2025 and a 6th-round pick in 2026

Smith, 32, has started all of the Browns games in the last two seasons, primarily playing the stand-up EDGE spot opposite Myles Garrett. He had five sacks in Cleveland’s first eight games after bagging 5.5 sacks in 2023.

With season-ending injuries to starters Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport, plus a preseason injury to veteran John Cominsky and recent health issues for Josh Paschal, the Lions were desperate to bring in pass-rushing help. Smith should instantly vault to the top of the EDGE depth chart for the rest of 2024. He is also under contract for 2025, though the Lions might seek to rework that deal once the trade is in the books.

In a move that could make Detroit the favorites in the NFC and show that Andrew Berry is waiving the white flag, the Lions have acquired pass rusher Za’Darius Smith from the Cleveland Browns for late-round draft picks.

Smith, 32, has played for the Ravens, Packers, and Vikings and previously stated that he’d welcome a trade to Detroit since it would allow him to compete directly with two of his former teams.

Smith has five sacks in eight games this season and gives Detroit the perfect replacement for Aidan Hutchinson, who’s out with a fractured fibula.

ESPN Insider gives update on Za’Darius Smith trade rumors

Adam Schefter reports that an NFC front-runner continues to poke around…

Cleveland Browns defensive end Za’Darius Smith has been a popular player to label as a potential guy on the move at the NFL trade deadline.

However, Smith is still a member of the Browns, who are 2-6 and have another AFC matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers on the horizon. If the Browns improve to 3-6 in a dismal AFC, could they hold onto assets in hopes of making a run at a wildcard spot?

ESPN’s Adam Schefter gave a bit of an update with the NFL trade deadline just two days away. According to Schefter, the Detroit Lions remain in contact with the Browns about acquiring Smith’s services. Earlier this week, it was rumored that the Browns want a “decent Day 3 pick” for Smith.

Will the Browns move their starting defensive end? One might think that the outcome of their game against the Chargers could play into their decision with the deadline nearing.

Did Myles Garrett hint at the immediate future of his running mate?

Myles Garrett insinuates Za’Darius Smith isn’t going anywhere.

With the NFL trade deadline nearing, Cleveland Browns defensive end Za’Darius Smith has been a popular name, but his teammate Myles Garrett doesn’t seem too worried about it.

Garrett himself has been named in some silly trade proposals as well despite it being quite obvious he is not going to get traded. Now, the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year has commented on the future of Smith with the deadline less than a week away:

“I’m going to continue to play with [Za’Darius Smith], so I’m not too worried about throwing out my pleasantries and compliments now. I’ll be able to tell him at the end of the year.”

It sure sounds like Garrett is lobbying for Smith to remain in Cleveland beyond Tuesday’s deadline. With a win against the Los Angeles Chargers, sitting at 3-6 in a subpar AFC, the Browns remain in the fight believe it or not.

We’ll see how it plays out between now and Tuesday at 4:00 PM EST.

Browns’ desired trade compensation for Za’Darius Smith revealed

The Browns are seeking a “decent Day 3 pick” for their veteran pass rusher.

The NFL trade deadline is nearing, and Cleveland Browns defensive end has been a headliner around the league as a likely candidate to be traded.

ESPN’s NFL insiders Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano have both listed Smith as the player most likely. When discussing this in their latest article discussing all of the deadline buzz, Fowler then went on to reveal what the Browns are looking for in exchange for their 32-year-old pass rusher.

According to Fowler, the Browns want “a decent Day 3 pick” to feel comfortable moving Smith. The pass rusher will be valuable to contending teams for a multitude of reasons, the first being that he is still a highly productive pass rusher.

However, he is also still under contract through 2025 and is making the veteran minimum the rest of the way out in this season as well. This all makes the compensation the Browns could get for him go up.

If the Browns beat the Los Angeles Chargers and improve to 3-6, however, will they be inclined to sell in a weak AFC?

Key things to know about Chargers’ Week 9 opponent: Browns

Here are some important things to know about the Browns ahead of the Week 9 matchup with the Chargers.

The Chargers are on the road to face the Browns on Sunday, Nov. 2, at 11:00 a.m. PT.

To get you prepped for the Week 9 bout, here are five key things to know about Los Angeles’ opponent ahead of the matchup.

How things are going…

The Browns are 2-6 on the season. Cleveland is coming off a 29-24 win over the Ravens. Before that, they had lost five straight games.

Jameis provides a spark

Deshaun Watson went down with a season-ending Achilles injury, and Winston got the start in Week 8 against the Ravens. The veteran journeyman stepped up in a big way, completing 27 of 41 passes for 334 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions. His performance was a much-needed boost for a struggling offense. Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said Winston will continue to start at quarterback.

Stalled on the ground

The Browns’ rushing offense hasn’t been anything to write home about. Nick Chubb, who suffered a gruesome injury last season, is back in the fold. Slowly working his way back, Chubb has carried the ball 27 times for 74 yards and a touchdown in his two games. Overall, Cleveland is 27th in rushing, averaging only 92.5 yards per carry.

Middle-of-the-pack defense

The Browns rank 18th in points allowed (23.3 ppg), 12th against the pass (200.6 yards per game) and 18th against the run (125.9 ypg). Cleveland could be without a couple of defensive starters. Cornerback Denzel Ward is in concussion protocol. Linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah is out with a neck injury. Jordan Hicks has been out the last three of four contests with an elbow/triceps injury.

Look out for…

Edge rushers Myles Garrett and Za’Darius Smith. Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt have been lights out this season, and they must continue to play at a high level against two premier pass rushers. Garrett and Smith have 36 and 24 quarterback pressures, respectively.

Browns DE a hot commodity on the trade market

Could the Browns sell more of their 30-and-up players at the trade deadline? One defensive end is all over trade rumors right now.

While the Cleveland Browns are not going to trade defensive end Myles Garrett, his running mate Za’Darius Smith continues to be named in trade rumors.

With names like Garrett and Maxx Crosby of the Las Vegas Raiders being told they are not for sale, Smith is the next man up. Under contract through 2025 as well, the acquiring team would not be getting just a rental either.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Smith has “drawn some attention across the league.”

The Browns are sitting at 1-6 and taking on the red-hot Baltimore Ravens. Their season is essentially already over. Recouping some draft capital for aging veterans over 30 years old may be their best move. With the emergence of second-year player Isaiah McGuire, the Browns may want to see what they have in him the rest of the way out.

Brad Holmes checking due diligence boxes on veteran pass rushers

Brad Holmes checking due diligence boxes on veteran pass rushers Haason Reddick and Za’Darius Smith, but don’t confuse due diligence for “Detroit’s making a move!”

The quest to fill the Lions roster holes at EDGE, after losing starters Marcus Davenport and now Aidan Hutchinson to season-ending injuries, has taken over the discussion in Detroit.

Lions GM Brad Holmes already started the process by signing young EDGE Isaiah Thomas from the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad. Holmes isn’t done looking, however.

Numerous reports, including from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, indicate Holmes and the Lions have had conversations with the New York Jets about veteran Haason Reddick. The former Eagles, Panthers and Cardinals sack artist is holding out after being traded to New York from Philadelphia in April. The Jets have now given Reddick, who has topped 10 sacks in each of the last four seasons while playing for three different teams, permission to try and find a trade partner.

As Fowler noted in his report, this is Holmes performing “due diligence” on potential solutions. There are also unsubstantiated reports the Lions have talked to the Cleveland Browns about veteran Za’Darius Smith. The 32-year-old also fits the profile of a “role player” that head coach Dan Campbell indicated the Lions were looking for, though he does carry a salary cap obligation of almost $10 million in 2025.

Holmes’ job is to explore every opportunity. It appears he is doing so, based on the reports. However, don’t confuse “talking about” with “trading for”; there are way too many variables and factors on both sides of those equations to read any certainty into Holmes doing anything more than his obligated due diligence at this point.

Key matchups for Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Cleveland Browns

Key matchups for Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Cleveland Browns

Coming off a tough loss in South Florida, the Jacksonville Jaguars are set for their home opener against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday as both teams look to avoid an 0-2 start.

This week Jacksonville looks to be more consistent with its offensive production while Cleveland is again forced to deal with quarterback Deshaun Watson and his off-field issues as the Browns await the return of all-world running back Nick Chubb.

Week 2 will give both teams a better picture of what and who they are moving forward into the 2024 campaign. The Jaguars hope for better execution in their offensive approach following their blown lead to the Miami Dolphins.

With that in mind, Jaguars Wire is here to identify some key matchups for Jacksonville’s Week 2 matchup with Cleveland. Here are three matchups the Jaguars must win to avoid a winless start to the season.

Cleveland QB Deshaun Watson vs. Jacksonville’s defense

One of the key takeaways from this past Sunday was the Jaguars’ admirable defensive performance against the explosive Dolphins offense. They mostly limited significant explosive plays and generated four-man pressures through their front four.

Browns head coach and play-caller Kevin Stefanski is known for his offensive creativity and has put Watson in positions to succeed. But since returning from suspension nearly two seasons ago, the former Clemson standout has yet to return to his pre-2021 form.

Watson’s performance against the Dallas Cowboys offered a clear sign of his current abilities.

According to Next Gen Stats, Watson was pressured on 44.6% of dropbacks, finishing 5-of-17 for 22 yards against pressure while being sacked six times. His 23.2 percent dropback success rate was the lowest in a game in the Next Gen Stats era.

Watson has declined, and the Jaguars have the defense to force him off his spot and into bad decisions. Plus, Jacksonville has the athletic defenders necessary to stick with Watson in quarterback contain.

If defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen’s unit can generate pressures and rattle Watson early, it should be a good day for Jacksonville.

Jacksonville’s offensive line vs. Cleveland’s defensive line

The trenches will be a key matchup in this game but none more crucial than the Jaguars offensive line against the Browns stellar pass rush, led by All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett.

Jacksonville’s front five did a decent job of protecting franchise quarterback Trevor Lawrence against the Dolphins, allowing a pressure rate of 32%, ranking No. 14 in the NFL in Week 1.

However, Cleveland defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz is arguably the best in the game at his position and finds ways of consistently getting to the QB. Against the Cowboys, most of the Browns’ pressures came from a defensive front featuring three defensive ends and one defensive tackle.

Having an extra edge rusher lined up at the three-technique could prove disadvantageous for Jacksonville’s guards due to the speed and quickness of Cleveland’s rushers. Schwartz will likely deploy this fairly often in passing situations.

The biggest concern will be if the Jaguars can limit Garrett, arguably the best pass rusher in the world. This offensive line will also have to account for defensive tackles Dalvin Tomlinson and Shelby Harris, and defensive ends Za’Darius Smith and Alex Wright.

Jacksonville seems up for the challenge considering its Week 1 performance. Right guard Brandon Scherff must have a better game after an up-and-down showing in Miami. However, left guard Ezra Cleveland and center Mitch Morse held their own against the Dolphins and can build upon their performances this week.

Tackles Cam Robinson and Anton Harrison will have a lot on their plate Sunday, but another solid day from these five linemen could signal success for the Jaguars in Week 2.

Jacksonville’s skill players vs. Cleveland’s back-seven

Once again, the Jaguars’ group of offensive skill players will face another tough secondary only this time on their home turf.

The Browns have a defensive unit that allowed a negative .20 expected points added (EPA) per play allowed. Their back seven is led by star linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and three-time Pro Bowl cornerback Denzel Ward with more quality defenders roaming the second and third level.

For most teams, including Jacksonville, facing Cleveland’s back seven is a tall task. Nevertheless, the Jaguars have last week’s first-half performance to go off of when it comes to taking on other stout back seven defenders.

Rookie wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. must be a focal point Sunday. The offense was humming when he was being targeted and he adds a level of explosiveness and playmaking ability this unit has not had in quite some time. His zero targets in the second half were inexcusable.

This weekend could be a good time for the Jaguars to deploy Evan Engram into the passing game in his new versatile role as the F-move tight end and fullback. He could be the X-factor against a tough Browns secondary.

Finding explosive plays and getting the ball to the team’s best playmakers will be another crucial aspect in their pursuit of a home-opener victory.
