Jaguars announce 9 new coaching hires, 2 promotions

The Jaguars’ coaching staff is set for the 2024 season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars formally announced their 2024 coaching staff Thursday with nine new hires and two promotions.

The list includes Ryan Nielsen, the team’s new defensive coordinator, who will take over for Mike Caldwell. The Jaguars fired Caldwell after two seasons shortly after the 2023 season ended.

Last week, Nielsen had his first press conference as defensive coordinator for the team and told reporters that he aims to construct an “attacking” and “aggressive” unit in Jacksonville.

Seven of the new hires are on the defensive side of the ball and two are on offense. Two coaches who previously served as quality control coaches were promoted. Here are all 11 coaching changes announced by the Jaguars:

It sure sounds like new Jaguars DC Ryan Nielsen wants cornerback help

Was Ryan Nielsen’s press conference a hint that cornerback will be a top priority for the Jaguars this offseason?

In his first press conference, new Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen kept his cards close to the vest. Sure, he talked about his desire to build an “attacking and aggressive” defense, but there aren’t exactly coordinators talking about constructing a cordial, peaceful defense.

When asked a specific question about his vision for Travon Walker’s role, Nielsen only said “we’ll put our guys in the best positions for them to have success.”

But if there was a moment when Nielsen actually pulled back the curtain a bit, it was when he was asked about generating pressure on third down. While the Jaguars finished the 2023 season 25th in the NFL in sacks, it wasn’t the team’s pass rushers that Nielsen pointed to as the issue.

“The first thing we have to do is affect the quarterback in that we can’t allow the ball to come out of his hand quickly,” Nielsen said. “Then the rush doesn’t get there. If the coverage has holes in it or give an easy throw, it doesn’t matter who we’ve got coming off the edge. We’ve got a couple of good edge guys here. We have to get the quarterback to hold it.”

It seems Nielsen has no concern with Walker and Josh Allen getting to the quarterback. He’s instead focused on making sure the team’s defensive backs aren’t getting beat off the line of scrimmage.

Tyson Campbell struggled through injuries for much of the 2023 season, but has a good chance at being a cornerstone of the Jaguars defense moving forward. Darious Williams had a much better year than Campbell, but has a much murkier future in Jacksonville due mostly to an $11.5 million 2024 cap hit that could result in his release.

The rest of the Jaguars’ depth chart at cornerback consists of players they found late in the NFL draft (Gregory Junior, Montaric Brown, Christian Braswell, Erick Hallett) and undrafted free agency (Tre Herndon).

When the Jaguars hunted for talent at the midseason trade deadline, cornerback was one of the spots they considered to be most in need of a boost before eventually addressing the offensive line instead.

There’s no doubt that the team’s lackluster pass rushing depth is an issue. Nielsen has seemingly identified the team’s cornerbacks as the higher priority, though.

Ryan Nielsen was stuck on ‘It’s a Small World’ when Jaguars reached out

“I looked at my wife like ‘How long is this gonna be?'”

When the Jacksonville Jaguars first attempted to interview Ryan Nielsen for their vacant defensive coordinator job, they were denied by the Atlanta Falcons.

Teams are allowed to block their assistants from interviewing for lateral moves and the Falcons, at the time, were interested in potentially keeping Nielsen in charge of leading their defense. So the coach, thinking he wasn’t going to have much business to handle anytime soon, went ahead and took a trip to Disney World.

“We were on ‘The Small World’ … I’ve got my kids and my wife is on the other end,” Nielsen said. “We just sat down on the boat and I got a text from Coach [Doug] Pederson basically saying ‘Hey Ryan, it’s Coach and we’d like to talk to you.’

“I looked at my wife like ‘How long is this gonna be? I gotta make a call.’ I can’t remember the last time I was on ‘A Small World,’ but it seemed about a half an hour that ride. But eventually we got off and it worked out.”

Disney’s “It’s a Small World” ride is only around 10 minutes, but it can feel a lot longer for even the most patient parents. Add in the stress of not wanting to blow a potential job opportunity and the sometimes grating repetitiveness of the ride must’ve been brutal for Nielsen.

In the end, it all worked out. Nielsen got the job and the Jaguars got their defensive coordinator. Perhaps now that he’s a little closer to Orlando, the coach will have a chance to take a slightly less stressful trip to Disney World before the 2024 season gets started.

5 takeaways from new Jaguars DC Ryan Nielsen’s first press conference

New defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen says the Jaguars will have an “attacking, aggressive” defense in 2024.

Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen introduced himself to Duval on Thursday in his first press conference since accepting the job in January.

Nielsen, 44, has been tasked with lifting up a Jaguars defense that finished the 2023 season No. 22 in yards allowed and No. 17 in points allowed.

Prior to arriving in Jacksonville, Nielsen spent the 2023 season as the defensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons and the six seasons prior on the coaching staff of the New Orleans Saints. In his sole season in Atlanta, the team finished No. 11 in yards allowed, a massive improvement from its No. 27 finish in 2022.

On Thursday, Nielsen offered a few glimpses at what he’s planning for the Jaguars defense to look like in 2024. Here are five of the most interesting nuggets from his first press conference:

Demario Davis on Ryan Nielsen: I don’t know if there’s a better coach

Saints linebacker Demario Davis has nothing but great things to say about new Jaguars DC Ryan Nielsen.

It’s been a couple years since the New Orleans Saints’ two-time Pro Bowl linebacker Demario Davis played under defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen, but the coach clearly made an impression.

“Coach Nielsen is a phenomenal coach, a phenomenal defensive mind,” Davis told Juston Lewis of the Florida Times-Union at the 2024 Pro Bowl Games. “Definitely made our defense better, especially from a front-seven standpoint.

“I don’t know if there’s a better coach in the game, not to take anything away from anybody, but I think anybody who’s played on his defensive line just understands from a technique standpoint, from an intensity standpoint, from a detail standpoint.”

Nielsen, 44, spent six seasons as a defensive line coach for the Saints and worked as co-defensive coordinator in his last season with the team. In 2023, Nielsen left to spend one season as defensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons.

He made strong impressions at that stop too. Atlanta’s Pro Bowl safety Jessie Bates III gave pass rusher Josh Allen a rave review of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ new defensive coordinator and Bates told the Times-Union good things about the coach too.

Jacksonville finished 17th in points allowed last season and 22nd in yards allowed. While the team finished eighth in takeaways and had two pass rushers finish with double-digit sacks, Mike Caldwell was fired as the team’s defensive coordinator shortly after the season ended.

Nielsen, who helped the Falcons climb from 27th in yards allowed in 2022 to 11th in 2023, has been tasked with helping the Jaguars make a similar jump in 2024.

Falcons’ Jessie Bates gave Josh Allen a glowing review of Ryan Nielsen

After talking to Falcons S Jessie Bates, Josh Allen thinks Jaguars players are “gonna become the best” under new DC Ryan Nielsen.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are turning to Ryan Nielsen to lead the way for their defense, and — barring a shocking turn of events — Josh Allen will be a key piece in making the unit a success in 2024 and beyond.

It’s still too early for Allen and other Jaguars players to have much of an impression of their new defensive coordinator, though.

Fortunately for Allen, he got to spend time with players across the NFL at the 2024 Pro Bowl Games. While he was there, he picked the brain of Atlanta Falcons safety Jessie Bates, who spent the 2023 season with Nielsen.

“Jessie who played under him, you know, he’s a guy that I went up to, like ‘Hey, how’s Coach Nielsen?'” Allen said, via Jamal St. Cyr of News4Jax. “He gave me the little rundown of, you know, what to expect.

“But it seemed like guys like playing for him and guys are gonna become the best, you know if they follow ‘the way,’ in a way. So, you know, I think it could be a real difference in Jacksonville.”

In Nielsen’s sole season in Atlanta, the Falcons finished 11th in yards allowed — a significant improvement from the team’s 27th place finish in the year prior.

Bates, who signed a four-year, $64 million deal with the Falcons in free agency last year, had a career year in 2023, finishing with six interceptions, three forced fumbles, and 132 tackles — all career highs.

“The way he attacks things every day – he always talks about attack and aggressive – whether we’re on the field or in the meeting room or the weight room,” Bates said of Nielsen in June, via AtlantaFalcons.com, “He wants us to attack and be aggressive with everything we do.”

Allen had a career year of his own in 2023, finishing with 17.5 sacks. He needs 10.5 more to take the Jaguars’ career sack record from Tony Brackens.

Two former Saints assistants reunite with Ryan Nielson

Two ex-New Orleans Saints coaches reunited with Ryan Nielson on the Jacksonville Jaguars: Kris Richard and Cory Robinson

Former New Orleans Saints co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen was recently hired by the Jacksonville Jaguars to be their new defensive coordinator. And it’s shaping up for a very familiar defensive coaching staff in Jacksonville; Nielsen has been quick to reunite with two former Saints colleagues.

Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 has reported the hiring of Kris Richard by the Jaguars. Richard was most recently the co-defensive coordinator (alongside Nielsen) and secondary coach for the Saints in 2022. Before that he was the defensive coordinator for the Seahawks and defensive passing game coordinator for the Cowboys. He did not coach in 2023.

Nielsen also recently added Cory Robinson to the defensive staff as well. Robinson was mostly recently an analyst for the Tennessee Volunteers, but was a part of the 2021-2022 Saints staff with both Nielsen and Richard where he worked as an assistant defensive backs coach. With speculation swirling that Saints star cornerback Marshon Lattimore could be traded this offseason, the Jaguars suddenly look like a possible suitor given all these coaching connections and their bottom-8 finish in both passing yards allowed and touchdown passes yielded in 2023.

Report: Jaguars adding Kris Richard, Cory Robinson to defensive staff

The Jaguars’ defensive coaching staff is taking shape.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are adding Kris Richard and Cory Robinson to their defensive coaching staff, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2.

Richard and Robinson were both on the New Orleans Saints’ coaching staff during Ryan Nielsen’s time with the franchise. Nielsen and Richard served as co-defensive coordinators for the Saints in 2022 while Robinson was an assistant defensive backs coach. Earlier this week, the Jaguars hired Nielsen as their new defensive coordinator.

The exact job titles for the two new coaches in Jacksonville hasn’t yet been revealed, although both have primarily worked with defensive backs.

Richard didn’t coach during the 2023 season, but previously spent three seasons as the Seattle Seahawks’ defensive coordinator and had a two-year stint as passing game coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys.

Robinson spent the 2023 season as a defensive analyst for the Tennessee  Volunteers. He also previously coached in the collegiate ranks at Maryland, Rutgers, Toledo, and Temple. According to Wilson, he’ll be a cornerbacks coach with the Jaguars, although it’s unclear for now if he’ll be the lead coach for the position or an assistant cornerbacks coach.

The Jaguars finished the 2023 season 26th in passing yards allowed and 25th in passing touchdowns allowed.

Is the Jaguars’ need for man cornerbacks ‘blown out of proportion’?

Trent Baalke says Ryan Nielsen’s usage of man coverage has been “blown out of proportion.” The numbers say otherwise.

When the Jacksonville Jaguars hired Ryan Nielsen to be their new defensive coordinator, it seemingly signaled that a significant shift in philosophy, scheme, and personnel was on the way.

While the Jaguars defense under Mike Caldwell leaned heavily on Cover 3 zone coverages, the Atlanta Falcons primarily employed Cover 1 coverage under Nielsen. In layman’s terms, Jacksonville had three defensive backs divide responsibility for the deepest part of the secondary into thirds, while Atlanta had players mostly cover receivers one-on-one with a solitary safety patrolling the middle of the secondary.

So, the Jaguars better get some cornerbacks who can cover man-to-man, right? Not so fast, according to general manager Trent Baalke.

“This idea that [Nielsen’s] a full man-coverage guy is fully blown out of proportion,” Baalke told reporters Thursday. “I think I’ll let him speak on scheme. It’s really a zone-based system, not a man-based system but a lot of times when you play zone, and you play it well it turns into man with the match concepts and everything else.

“Schematically, there’s going to be a change. It’s not going to necessarily affect the type of personnel we look for. The thing that’s are neat is the preparation that Ryan had put in to getting ready for the interview, knowing our roster the way he did, talking through how he sees those pieces being utilized in his defense.”

It’d seem that Baalke believes the group of cornerbacks already on the Jaguars’ roster are plenty capable of playing in Nielsen’s scheme, which — in his words — is “really a zone-based system.” Yet, statistics don’t exactly support that statement.

The numbers also don’t speak well to the Jaguars defensive backs making a smooth transition to more man coverage. Cornerback Tyson Campbell was in man on 17 percent of his coverage snaps this season, according to Pro Football Focus, and was credited with allowing a 154.4 passer rating when targeted.

Opposing passer rating in man coverage was above 100 for Tre Herndon, Devin Lloyd, Montaric Brown, Foye Oluokun, and Gregory Junior too.

Perhaps Nielsen’s scheme will yield better results for Campbell and co., especially if the defense is able to produce more pressure up front. But Baalke’s insistence that Nielsen employs a zone-based system that won’t force the team to change the type of players it looks for is a head-scratcher.

Prior to the hire of Nielsen, cornerback looked like it’d be near the middle of the Jaguars’ offseason needs. Baalke doesn’t seem too concerned about bumping it up the list of priorities.

Jaguars reportedly interview former Seahawks DC Kris Richard

Kris Richard most recently served as co-defensive coordinator of the Saints with new Jaguars DC Ryan Nielsen.

The Jacksonville Jaguars interviewed Kris Richard for an unspecified coaching position, according to Aaron Wilson or KPRC2.

Richard, 44, previously spent three seasons as defensive coordinator of the Seattle Seahawks, two years as passing game coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, and most recently spent two seasons with the New Orleans Saints.

During his last stop, Richard served as the Saints’ defensive backs coach in 2021 and co-defensive coordinator/secondary coach in 2022. New Jaguars defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen split co-defensive coordinator duties with Richard during that 2022 season before leaving to join the Atlanta Falcons.

Richard didn’t coach in 2023 after leaving the Saints earlier in the year.

Given his history as a secondary specialist, Richard would presumably be interviewing to join the Jaguars as a defensive backs coach or passing game coordinator of some sort. Deshea Townsend was fired as Jacksonville’s passing game coordinator/cornerbacks coach and Cody Grimm was fired as safeties coach earlier in January.

The Jaguars finished 26th in passing yards allowed during the 2023 season and 25th in passing touchdowns allowed.
