The New York Giants already lead the league in games missed due to injury and in Week 18, they will pad that total.

On Wednesday, the Giants announced that rookie edge rusher Elerson Smith had been placed on injured reserve with a neck injury. That officially ends his season after just eight games.

Smith, a fourth-round pick last April, recorded eight tackles, one forced fumble and two QB hits in a very limited role.

Meanwhile, the Giants activated offensive tackle Korey Cunningham, defensive linemen Dexter Lawrence and Danny Shelton, and wide receiver Darius Slayton from the Reserve/COVID-19 list. They also restored linebacker Omari Cobb and defensive back Ka’dar Hollman to the practice squad from the COVID-19 list.

Finally, defensive tackle Woodrow Hamilton has been placed on the practice squad/COVID-19 list.

Ben Bredeson, Andrew Thomas were highest-graded Giants in Week 17

New York Giants offensive linemen Ben Bredeson and Andrew Thomas earned the team’s highest grades in Week 17.

The New York Giants fell to the Chicago Bears, 29-3, in one of their worst performances of the year on Sunday. The game was over after the first play and that set the tone for all four quarters.

There was a lot of bad. A lot of ugly. And there’s no way around that, but there were some positives as well. At least in the mind of those over at Pro Football Focus.

Guard Ben Bredeson led the team with an overall grade of 94.7. He was followed by left tackle Andrew Thomas (79.5), tight end Chris Myarick (67.6) and right tackle Nate Solder (67.4).

Other notable offensive grades include running back Saquon Barkley (66.7), fullback Eli Penny (56.3) and wide receiver Kenny Golladay (53.1).

The lowest-graded Giant on offense was quarterback Mike Glennon (21.4).

On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker Jaylon Smith led the way with an overall grade of 78.6. He was followed by linebacker Lorenzo Carter (72.0), defensive lineman Woodrow Hamilton (68.8) and cornerback Adoree’ Jackson (68.0).

Other notable defensive grades include safety Logan Ryan (65.5), cornerback James Bradberry (64.9) and linebacker Azeez Ojulari (61.3).

The lowest-graded Giant on defense was linebacker Reggie Ragland (27.0).

Defensive back Steven Parker was the highest-graded Giant on special teams, checking out with an overall grade of 84.9.

The New York Giants announced on Tuesday that they have re-signed defensive tackle Woodrow Hamilton to their practice squad. He had previously been released back in late October.

The 28-year-old Hamilton, who signed with the New England Patriots as an undrafted rookie out of Ole Miss in 2016, is now in his third stint with the Giants. After starting his career with the Pats, he landed with the New Orleans Saints (2017-2018) before having a brief cup of coffee with New York in 2018.

The 6-foot-3, 315-pound Hamilton also had stints with the Carolina Panthers (2019-2020) and Tennessee Titans (2021).

Hamilton won a title alongside current Giants head coach Joe Judge in 2017, each of whom were with the Patriots at the time.

Over his six-year NFL career, Hamilton has appeared in nine games (one start) and recorded six tackles (three solo) and one fumble recovery.

In order to clear space for Hamilton on the practice squad, the Giants terminated the contract of quarterback Clayton Thorson. He had been signed last week as emergency depth.

Finally, the Giants protected four practice squad players: wide receiver/return man Pharoh Cooper, defensive lineman David Moa and defensive backs Jarren Williams and Natrell Jamerson.

Earlier this week, the New York Giants hosted workouts for three defensive tackles — Woodrow Hamilton, Treyvon Hester and Xavier Williams.

One day after the workouts, Hamilton was in a Giants uniform and on the field for practice. He had been signed to the team’s practice squad.

The 28-year-old Hamilton, who signed with the New England Patriots as an undrafted rookie out of Ole Miss in 2016, is a somewhat familiar face to the Giants. Giants host workouts for three defensive tackles

The New York Giants hosted three defensive tackles for workouts on Tuesday, including a familiar face in Woodrow Hamilton.

On the same day the New York Giants made several key changes to their roster and practice squad, they also hosted three defensive tackles for workouts.

Woodrow Hamilton, Treyvon Hester and Xavier Williams all made the trip to East Rutherford to tryout in front of head coach Joe Judge & Co.

Hamilton, who signed with the New England Patriots as an undrafted rookie out of Ole Miss in 2016, is a somewhat familiar face to the Giants. After starting his career with the Pats, he landed with the New Orleans Saints (2017-2018) before having a brief cup of coffee with new York in 2018.

The 28-year-old Hamilton also had stints with the Carolina Panthers (2019-2020) and Tennessee Titans (2021).

Hester, 29, was a seventh-round pick of the Oakland Raiders in the 2017 NFL draft. After a year with the Raiders, he went on to have stints with the Philadelphia Eagles (2018, 2020), Washington Football Team (2019), Green Bay Packers (2020) and Buffalo Bills (2021).

Williams, 29, was signed by the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted rookie out of Northern Iowa in 2015. He spent his first three seasons in Arizona joining the Kansas City Chiefs (2018-2019), New England Patriots (2020) and Cincinnati Bengals (2020). He also briefly returned to Arizona this offseason.

It’s unclear if any of the three were immediately signed to the active roster or practice squad.

Titans place Murchison on IR, promote Finch and Hamilton

Murchison will be out for at least the next three games.

The Tennessee Titans made a trio of roster moves on Friday ahead of the Week 4 game against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium.

The team announced it has placed defensive lineman Larrell Murchison on Injured Reserve, along with promoting fellow defensive lineman Woodrow Hamilton and outside linebacker Sharif Finch.

Murchison, who was ruled out of the Week 4 contest on Friday, was listed with an elbow issue on the team’s injury report this week. The second-year lineman will be out for at least three games.

Hamilton was signed earlier this offseason and will take Murchison’s place on the active roster. The veteran lineman saw the field for five snaps during the Week 3 win over the Indianapolis Colts, but didn’t record a stat.

Finch was signed to the practice squad this week in the wake of the Titans placing both outside linebackers Derick Roberson and Rashad Weaver on IR.

The former UDFA of the Titans in 2018 spent two seasons in Nashville. He could see playing time immediately with Tennessee having just two other healthy outside linebackers on the roster after Bud Dupree was ruled out.

Along with Dupree, wide receivers A.J. Brown and Julio Jones, punter Brett Kern and cornerback Caleb Farley were also ruled out ahead of Sunday.

Panthers release DT Woodrow Hamilton, DB Natrell Jamerson

According to team reporter Darin Gantt, defensive tackle Woodrow Hamilton and defensive back Natrell Jamerson have been cut.

Friday night news dumps are back! Today the Carolina Panthers released two players who were a part of their practice squad for portions of the 2020 NFL season. According to team reporter Darin Gantt, defensive tackle Woodrow Hamilton and defensive back Natrell Jamerson have been cut.

Hamilton was on the back end of the interior rotation of the defensive line and was called up from the practice squad a few times due to injuries and COVID-19. He played five games in 2020, totaling 57 defensive snaps, three tackles and one fumble recovery.

Jamerson recently signed a two-year contract extension, so this news comes as a little bit of a surprise in his case. Jamerson was a core practice squad player this past year and was frequently one of the four players who were protected from getting signed by other teams. He appeared in four games, mostly seeing the field on special teams (43 snaps).

Panthers announce several moves ahead of Week 14 matchup with Broncos

The Carolina Panthers have announced a series of moves ahead of tomorrow’s game against the Denver Broncos.

The Carolina Panthers have announced a series of moves ahead of tomorrow’s game against the Denver Broncos.

Here’s a recap of the changes they’ve made.

LB Adarius Taylor activated from IR

First, veteran linebacker Adarius Taylor has been activated from the team’s injured reserve list, where he’s been since Week 10. Before the groin injury that put him there, he was a core special teames contributor. In nine games this season, he’s played 146 special teams snaps, 46% of the team’s total.

DT Woodrow Hamilton signed to active roster

Carolina is thin at defensive tackle right now with starter Zach Kerr on their reserve/COVID-19 list. So, the team has signed practice squad DT Woodrow Hamilton to the active roster. Assuming he’s in the lineup against Denver, it will be the fourth game he’s played this season.

WR Marken Michel, DT Mike Panasiuk elevated

Two other practice squad players are also being elevated to the active roster. Wide receiver Marken Michel and defensive tackle Mike Panasiuk have been given COVID-19 designations, so they won’t count against the game-day roster.

LB Chris Orr waived

The Panthers also waived undrafted rookie linebacker Chris Orr. He appeared in the team’s last three games, mostly on special teams.

Panthers make a few practice squad moves Saturday afternoon

The Panthers elevated DT Woodrow Hamilton to the active roster and signed two more free agents.

The Carolina Panthers shifted around a few players on their practice squad early Saturday afternoon.

Following the news that defensive linemen Kawann Short (foot) and Yetur Gross-Matos (concussion) would sit out Sunday’s divisional matchup versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the team brought up Woodrow Hamilton to the active roster to provide depth on the interior line. Hamilton spent the last season on the Panthers practice squad and looks to do the same this year, but with some weekly appearances on the active roster from time to time.

As for the other moves, the team hosted kicker Kai Forbath for a visit not long after releasing practice squad kicker and punter Kaare Vedvik. Although rookie punter Joe Charlton had a good game versus the Las Vegas Raiders last week, Forbath is a good insurance policy for the team in case all doesn’t continue to go well for the undrafted free agent.

The other signing to the practice squad was cornerback Trumaine Johnson, who visited with Forbath and will now take defensive back T.J. Green’s spot on the 16-man squad. Offensive lineman Aaron Monteiro was also released, an expected move given that Carolina is still carrying three other players at his position on the practice squad.

Panthers 2020 training camp: Projecting 5 potential cuts on defense

Let’s take a look at the next potential five cuts on defense.

The Carolina Panthers began padded practices yesterday after announcing a series of offensive roster moves on Sunday. The team picked up wide receivers Tommylee Lewis and Marken Michel plus tight end Andrew Vollert. To make room, they cut DeAndrew White, Cam Sutton and two rookie linebackers.

More releases will be coming soon. Let’s take a look at the next potential five cuts on defense.

DE Myles Adams

Myles Adams
Don Wright-USA TODAY Sports

As an undrafted rookie, Adams already had a difficult road to make the 53-man roster this year. Things got more complicated on Monday when the Panthers claimed former Cowboys defensive end Jalen Jelks off waivers. Early-round picks like Yetur Gross-Matos are assured their spots, but Adams doesn’t have that advantage built in for him. He will need to separate himself from the rest if he’s going to survive the next round of cuts.
