Giants host workouts for three defensive tackles

The New York Giants hosted three defensive tackles for workouts on Tuesday, including a familiar face in Woodrow Hamilton.

On the same day the New York Giants made several key changes to their roster and practice squad, they also hosted three defensive tackles for workouts.

Woodrow Hamilton, Treyvon Hester and Xavier Williams all made the trip to East Rutherford to tryout in front of head coach Joe Judge & Co.

Hamilton, who signed with the New England Patriots as an undrafted rookie out of Ole Miss in 2016, is a somewhat familiar face to the Giants. After starting his career with the Pats, he landed with the New Orleans Saints (2017-2018) before having a brief cup of coffee with new York in 2018.

The 28-year-old Hamilton also had stints with the Carolina Panthers (2019-2020) and Tennessee Titans (2021).

Hester, 29, was a seventh-round pick of the Oakland Raiders in the 2017 NFL draft. After a year with the Raiders, he went on to have stints with the Philadelphia Eagles (2018, 2020), Washington Football Team (2019), Green Bay Packers (2020) and Buffalo Bills (2021).

Williams, 29, was signed by the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted rookie out of Northern Iowa in 2015. He spent his first three seasons in Arizona joining the Kansas City Chiefs (2018-2019), New England Patriots (2020) and Cincinnati Bengals (2020). He also briefly returned to Arizona this offseason.

It’s unclear if any of the three were immediately signed to the active roster or practice squad.

Bills release Treyvon Hester via injury settlement

#Bills release Treyvon Hester via injury settlement:

The Buffalo Bills came to an injury settlement with defensive tackle Treyvon Hester and he has been released by the team.

The transaction appeared in Wednesday’s NFL transaction wire.

The Bills originally placed Hester on their injured reserve list on Aug. 28 due to a back injury when the team activated several players, including wide receiver Cole Beasley, from their Reserve/COVID-19 list.

The 28-year-old signed with the Bills in May. He was previously cut in March by the Philadelphia Eagles.

During his career, Hester has made regular season appearances with the Raiders (2017), Eagles (2018) and Football Team (2019). Combined he has featured in 41 games but has only made two starts.

Hester has not appeared in a NFL game since 2019.

Hester was stacked pretty low on a deep defensive line depth chart for the Bills and had a uphill battle to making the team’s final 53-man roster.

WATCH: New Bills DL Treyvon Hester caused famous ‘double-doink’ missed kick

Buffalo Bills DL Treyvon Hester caused the famous double-doink missed field goal for Eagles-Bears in 2018.

The Bills signed defensive tackle Treyvon Hester on Thursday. The big-bodied defender will get a chance to make his impact in training camp behind both Ed Oliver and Star Lotulelei in the middle of Buffalo’s defensive line.

Hester joins the Bills via a one-year, likely “prove it” type of deal.

While not guaranteed a spot on Buffalo’s roster just yet, he does hold a status which only one other player, Taron Johnson, has: Playoff hero.

Johnson sent the Bills to the AFC title game last year when he intercepted Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson in the divisional round and took the ball over 100 yards down the field for the score. In 2018, Hester made a similar impact.

Hester, now 28, caused the infamous (for Bears fans) “double-doink” field goal. Cody Parkey lined up for the game-winning kick for his team as time expired, and the ball went off of the uprights… twice:

Initial reaction was that Parkey missed… but no. Hester tipped the ball:

This game between the Eagles and Bears occurred in the 2018 Wild Card round. That was not the year the Eagles won the Super Bowl, rather, the season after. Still, perhaps such efforts on special teams is one route that Hester can take to cracking the Bills’ final 53-man roster in 2021.

Of course, he might also have to deal with at least one upset teammate with the Bills now.

For those who decided not to re-watch the live video of the double-doink above… you get a look at who was the Bears’ quarterback that game: new Bills backup quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. What could have been for Mitch had Hester not gotten his hand in the way?

During his career, Hester has made regular season appearances with the Raiders (2017), Eagles (2018) and Football Team (2019). Combined he has featured in 41 games but has only made two starts.

With the Bills, Hester will likely see a chance to earn a roster or practice squad spot in training camp.

Browns hold tryout for DT Treyvon Hester

Hester played under Browns OL coach Bill Callahan in Washington in 2019

Battling several injuries across the defensive line, the Cleveland Browns worked out some potential depth help on Wednesday. The team held a tryout with defensive tackle Treyvon Hester.

Hester, 28, has played for three NFL teams in as many years since being a seventh-round pick by the Raiders (then in Oakland) in 2017. He played collegiately at Toledo. Hester played 15 games with Washington last season, where current Browns offensive line coach Bill Callahan served as interim coach for the end of the season.

In 41 career games, Hester has two sacks and 40 career tackles. He’s of similar style to Browns starter Larry Ogunjobi, who was limited in Wednesday’s practice.
