Seahawks coach Pete Carroll lauds ‘terrific consistency’ from DL Myles Adams

Perhaps defensive line help could come from an in-house option.

The Seattle Seahawks are in dire need to have vast improvement along their defensive line. Seattle’s defensive front struggled mightily in 2022 following a new system change. The Seahawks have taken all steps necessary this offseason to work on fixing this issue, such as signing free agents and spending draft capital.

But perhaps help could come from in-house. Head coach Pete Carroll was recently signing the praises of defensive lineman Myles Adams, and specifically his consistency. Per John Boyle at Seahawks.com:

“Terrific consistency… He’s been an every-day guy. He doesn’t miss anything, he always works, always gives great effort, a really smart kid. He’s been a really good team guy for us, and has continued to show that in this camp.”

Adams played in 10 games for the Seahawks last season. In the limited action, he recorded 16 total tackles and one pass defense.

Seattle has improved their depth up front, but given the need for improvement, the Seahawks will certainly be looking at everyone for a chance to contribute in 2023.

With Al Woods having left in free agent for the New York Jets, the Seattle Seahawks have to find a new starter at nose tackle this year. They have a couple of experienced options, including Myles Adams and the injured vet (ACL) Bryan Mone. However, we’re expecting one of the rookies to take over Woods’ former role. That would be the team’s fourth-round draft pick, former Mississippi State defensive tackle Cameron Young.

Young may not have any experience at the pro level, but his profile might give him an advantage over the other candidates. Defensive coordinator Clint Hurtt likes Young’s measurables as well as his football awareness. Here’s what he said about Young last week, per Mike Dugar at the Athletic.

“The measurable stuff is obviously impressive, he’s a large man with long arms, big hands, is strong, and is physical at the point of contact, but he’s a guy that has good football awareness, ideas and feel of things going on… He has done a nice job so far. He’s a guy that is unselfish, physical, rugged and plays a position that doesn’t get a lot of fanfare.”

Other rookies that will be battling for a spot in the nose rotation include recently-signed LaTrell Bumphus from Tennessee and San Diego State’s Jonah Tavai, possibly the most-intriguing undrafted player in the entire league.

The Seahawks just announced that defensive tackle Myles Adams has been placed on the team’s Reserve/COVID-19 list.

Adams is the second Seattle defensive lineman who’s been placed on the list this week and his presence brings the total number of players on it to five. Here is the team’s updated COVID-19 list heading into the final week of the 2021 season.

Seahawks sign defensive tackle Myles Adams to future contract

The Seattle Seahawks signed defensive tackle Myles Adams to their practice squad, increasing the number of future contract signees to 13.

The Seattle Seahawks signed defensive tackle Myles Adams to a future contract, bringing the total of future contract signees for 2021 to 13 along with John Ursua.

Adams does not possess much of an NFL resume and has not played a single professional snap. He went undrafted out of Rice University and spent only a few weeks on the Panthers’ practice squad before his release ahead of the start of the 2020 season. He later spent most of December on Seattle’s practice squad and met the same fate as before, leaving him to remain unsigned until now.

With no professional experience, Adams will need reps if the Seahawks expect him to make the roster for next season, let alone contribute. This will be a long offseason for Seattle, and the Seahawks must do everything they can to rectify their issues if they wish to contend for a Super Bowl title.

Panthers host 3 defensive linemen, 1 linebacker for Tuesday tryouts

The team hosted three free agent defensive linemen and one linebacker for tryouts.

The Panthers are looking to add some defensive front-seven help based on today’s official NFL transaction report. The team hosted three free agent defensive linemen and one linebacker for tryouts.

Here is a look at who came in Tuesday.

LB Daniel Bituli (Tennessee)

Bituli (6-foot-3, 252 pounds) was one of the three players who came in for visits last week, including QB/TE Tommy Stevens, who was signed to the practice squad yesterday. Bituli offers more depth at linebacker and on special teams after Adarius Taylor was recently placed on injured reserve.

DT Myles Adams (Rice)

Adams (6-foot-2, 284 pounds) should be a familiar name for Carolina fans. He was one of the team’s original 17 undrafted free agent signings this offseason. Adams was cut just before the regular season began and put in some time with the practice squad early on. At Rice, he totaled 4.5 sacks and 10.5 tackles for a loss in 39 games.

DE/OLB Jamal Davis II (Akron)

Davis (6-foot-4, 235 pounds didn’t get much playing time as a rookie last year. He wound up playing 16 just snaps for the Dolphins. During his last two seasons at Akron he racked up 7.5 sacks and 31.5 tackles for a loss.

DE Jonathan Wynn (Vanderbilt)

Wynn (6-foot-4, 260 pounds) wasn’t on the field much in 2019, either. He played only 12 snaps, in his case with the Lions. Most of the time was passed going on and off Detroit’s practice squad. In college, he only had five sacks but he did knock down seven passes.

These tryouts and visits have usually gone to players who wind up on the fringes of the practice squad. Speaking of which, the team has waived tight end Seth DeValve from the practice squad and hosted kicker Taylor Bertolet for another visit.

Panthers sign WR Hakeem Butler to practice squad, release undrafted DT

The team just announced that Butler has been added to their practice squad.

The Carolina Panthers have hosted a few interesting free agents this week, including former Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Hakeem Butler. The team just announced that Butler has been added to their practice squad. To make room for him, they released undrafted defensive tackle Myles Adams.

Butler (6-foot-5, 227 pounds) was a fourth-round pick by Arizona in last year’s NFL draft. While his frame and athletic profile are enticing, the fact that he’s on a practice squad not even a year and a half after getting drafted doesn’t speak well to how things have gone for him in the NFL so far.

Carolina’s offense is still in need of a big-bodied red zone weapon, though. General manager Marty Hurney could be hoping that Butler develops into one after the team lost the promising 6-foot-3 rookie wideout Omar Bayless to the injured reserve list for the season.

The Panthers also have wide receiver Keith Kirkwood currently on the short-term IR list. He will be eligible to return after Week 3.

If any other receivers get injured this week, there’s an outside chance Butler could be active against the Chargers.

Panthers 2020 training camp: Projecting 5 potential cuts on defense

Let’s take a look at the next potential five cuts on defense.

The Carolina Panthers began padded practices yesterday after announcing a series of offensive roster moves on Sunday. The team picked up wide receivers Tommylee Lewis and Marken Michel plus tight end Andrew Vollert. To make room, they cut DeAndrew White, Cam Sutton and two rookie linebackers.

More releases will be coming soon. Let’s take a look at the next potential five cuts on defense.

DE Myles Adams

As an undrafted rookie, Adams already had a difficult road to make the 53-man roster this year. Things got more complicated on Monday when the Panthers claimed former Cowboys defensive end Jalen Jelks off waivers. Early-round picks like Yetur Gross-Matos are assured their spots, but Adams doesn’t have that advantage built in for him. He will need to separate himself from the rest if he’s going to survive the next round of cuts.
