Broncos’ updated 17-player practice squad with new OLB

Here’s a look at the Broncos’ updated 17-player practice squad following the addition of Andrew Farmer.

After making three roster moves on Wednesday, the Denver Broncos have reshuffled their practice squad ahead of Week 3.

The move that started the reshuffling was right tackle Mike McGlinchey (knee) being placed on injured reserve. To fill McGlinchey’s former spot on the 53-man roster, Denver promoted pass rusher Dondrea Tillman from the practice squad to the active roster.

To fill Tillman’s former practice squad spot, the Broncos brought in pass rusher Andrew Farmer.

The NFL’s standard practice squad size limit is 16 players, but there’s an exception that allows an extra international player to not count against the limit. For Denver, Australian tight end Thomas Yassmin is an exception, giving the Broncos a 17-player practice squad.

So here’s the full list of 17 players on the squad after Wednesday’s moves.

Broncos make first of several roster moves on deck this week

The Broncos are adding Andrew Farmer to their practice squad. More moves are on deck this week.

The Denver Broncos are signing pass rusher Andrew Farmer to their practice squad, KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis first reported on Tuesday. This marks the first of several roster moves on deck for the Broncos this week.

Denver will have to create a spot for Farmer on the practice squad, either by releasing another player or by promoting somebody from the practice squad to the active roster this week.

After losing right tackle Mike McGlinchey for “about a month” to a sprained MCL, the Broncos seem likely to place him on injured reserve. That would rule McGlinchey out for four games and open up a spot on the 53-man roster.

Denver has three offensive linemen on the 17-player practice squad. If they’re going to promote one of them to the active roster, Will Sherman would presumably be the top candidate. Sherman getting called up from the practice squad could create a spot for Farmer.

The potential McGlinchey and Sherman moves are just speculation at this point. Only the Farmer addition has been confirmed thus far. We’ll find out how the Broncos create a spot for Farmer in the next 48 hours.

Broncos roster series: No. 78, OL Will Sherman

Entering his third year with the Broncos, Will Sherman will aim to win a backup tackle role at training camp this summer.

Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at first-year* offensive lineman Will Sherman, No. 78.

Before the Broncos: Sherman (6-4, 300 pounds) entered the league as a sixth-round pick out of Colorado with the New England Patriots in 2021. He spent most of his rookie season on the practice squad, playing six snaps on special teams in his lone appearance. The following year, Sherman failed to make New England’s 53-man roster and was cut after training camp.

Broncos tenure: Denver signed Sherman to its practice squad after he was waived by the Patriots in 2022. Sherman was promoted to the active roster late in the season but did not play. He returned in 2023 and spent the entire season on the Broncos’ practice squad.

*Sherman has been in the NFL since 2021, but he does not have an accrued season (dressing for at least six regular-season games in a season), so the league lists him as a first-year player.

Chances to make the 53-man roster: Toss up. Sherman will be competing for a backup swing tackle role this summer. His competition will include Quinn Bailey, Alex Palczewski, Frank Crum, Matt Peart and Demontrey Jacobs. Competing at a crowded position, Sherman’s best chance to stick around in 2024 will likely be on the practice squad.

Broncos sign 12 players to reserve/future contract

The Broncos signed 12 players to reserve/future contracts on Monday. They will officially join the 90-man offseason roster in March.

Following the conclusion of their 2023 season, the Denver Broncos have signed 12 players to reserve/future contracts.

Perhaps the most notable signing is that of quarterback Ben DiNucci, who spent all of the 2023 season on the practice squad and was elevated to Denver’s game-day roster three times.

With Russell Wilson expected to be released in March, DiNucci and Jarrett Stidham will be left as the Broncos’ two quarterbacks going into 2024. Denver will likely add at least one more QB, either through free agency or the draft (or both) this spring.

Players who were not on an active roster at the end of the season are eligible to sign reserve/future contracts (every player on the practice squad is eligible, for example). These players will officially join the 90-man offseason roster when the NFL’s new league year begins on March 13.

Here’s a look at the 12 players the Broncos have signed to future deals.

Broncos roster series: No. 78, OL Will Sherman

After spending last season on Denver’s practice squad, OL Will Sherman will aim to impress the team’s new coaching staff this summer.

Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at first-year offensive lineman Will Sherman, No. 78.

Before the Broncos: Sherman (6-4, 300 pounds) played high school football with quarterback Kyler Murray in Allen, Texas before later playing college football for the Colorado Buffaloes. Sherman started 21 games at right tackle and six games at left tackle in college. He earned second-team all-conference honors twice in college.

Sherman was drafted by the New England Patriots in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL draft. After spending his rookie season on New England’s practice squad, Sherman was waived by the Patriots ahead of the 2022 season.

Broncos tenure: Denver signed Sherman to its practice squad last September. He was promoted to the active roster late in the season, but he did not appear in any games. Sherman is entering his third offseason in the NFL but he is considered a first-year player due to the league’s accrued season rules.

Chance to make the 53-man roster: Sherman will face long odds to make the active roster this summer, but he could be a strong candidate for the team’s practice squad.

Broncos injuries: 2 players placed on injured reserve

ICYMI: Broncos placed G Dalton Risner + RB Marlon Mack on IR and promoted CB Ja’Quan McMillian + OT Will Sherman from the practice squad.

The Denver Broncos’ list of injured players continues to grow.

The Broncos placed guard Dalton Risner (elbow) and running back Marlon Mack (hamstring) on injured reserve on Tuesday, the team announced. Risner and Mack will now sit out the team’s season finale against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday before hitting free agency in March.

Quinn Bailey and Luke Wattenberg will likely be the top candidates to fill in for Risner on Sunday. At running back, Tyler Badie now becomes the team’s third-choice option behind Latavius Murray and Chase Edmonds.

To fill the spots formerly held by Risner and Mack on the active roster, Denver promoted cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian and offensive tackle Will Sherman from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. That leaves the team with two open spots on the practice squad going into Week 18.

The Broncos’ complete Wednesday injury report can be seen below.

Denver will practice again on Thursday and Friday before releasing a final injury report with game statuses for Sunday.

NFL agent sent funny tweet to announce his client signed with Broncos

Mike McCartney has a good sense of humor 😅

The Denver Broncos made headlines in the football world on Thursday when they agreed to terms on a five-year, $245 million contract extension with star quarterback Russell Wilson.

The new deal includes $165 million guaranteed, and Wilson is now the sixth-highest paid QB in the NFL on a per-season average. In a sport where QBs are by far the most important position, Denver getting a long-term deal done with its franchise QB was clearly the biggest news item of the day.

Or was it?

NFL agent Mike McCartney took to Twitter on Thursday to announce what he (jokingly) refereed to as “the biggest Broncos news of the day”: McCartney’s client, offensive lineman Will Sherman, signed with Denver’s practice squad.

It was witty tweet from McCartney, who also uses Twitter to tease fans who confuse him for Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy.

McCartney often responds to fans who confuse him for the coach during the season.

“It definitely started when Mike was in Green Bay a few seasons ago,” McCartney told ESPN in 2020. “I’m on Twitter and I just remember a person tweeted at me as if I was the coach. And it was in-game. I was like, ‘Are they really that clueless? Our names are spelled differently.’ But then I thought it could be fun to reply as if I’m Mike McCarthy.”

Funny guy, that Mike McCartney.

As for his client, Sherman is a 23-year-old lineman who was picked by the New England Patriots in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL draft out of Colorado. Sherman spent his rookie season on New England’s practice squad last year, and he’ll now provide backup offensive tackle depth on the Broncos’ practice squad.
