RB Marlon Mack with walking boot after injury

Mack suffered an injury on Tuesday, his third practice with the Cardinals since signing.

The Arizona Cardinals added veteran running back Marlon Mack last week, giving the running back room some depth behind James Conner. That depth didn’t last long, as he suffered an injury in practice on Tuesday to his left leg.

While no details of his injury have been released and head coach Jonathan Gannon had not addressed the media as of early Wednesday morning, but it would appear that Mack has either a left foot or left ankle injury.

AZCentral Sports’ Bob McManaman saw Mack after practice wearing a walking boot on his left foot.

This doesn’t tell us how severe the injury is, but it does give reason for concern.

Mack, a former 1,000-yard rusher in 2019, has struggled to stay healthy since then. He tore his Achilles in 2020 and in the last three seasons has appeared in a total of 15 games, rushing for only 211 yards.

Since 2019, he has carried the ball more than five times in a game only once.

If he can stay healthy, he will give the Cardinals a nice option behind starting running back James Conner. However, considering he is hurt after only three practices and hasn’t stayed healthy over the last three seasons, that might be too much to ask.

RB Marlon Mack suffers apparent leg injury in practice

The veteran back injured his leg. He has played in 15 games over the last three seasons.

The Arizona Cardinals bolstered their running back room last week with the addition of veteran Marlon Mack. However, it is possible he misses some time.

On Tuesday, his third practice with the team, he went down with an apparent leg injury, according to reporters present at State Farm Stadium.

He had to be helped off the field and taken to the locker room.

Mack has struggled with durability since 2020. In 2019, he rushed for more than 1,000 yards for the Indianapolis Colts.

He tore his Achilles in 2020 and has only played in a total of 15 games over the last three seasons, rushing for 211 yards.

The Cardinals are also down second-year running back Keaontay Ingram with an undisclosed injury, although head coach Jonathan Gannon did say Ingram would be back soon.

This injury could keep Mack out of the Cardinals’ preseason opener Friday night.

Jonathan Gannon excited to incorporate new RB Marlon Mack

Mack was with Gannon on the Colts. Gannon calls him a “phenomenal” person and teammate.

The Arizona Cardinals added veteran running back Marlon Mack to the roster on Friday. He could viably be James Conner’s backup when the season begins.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon is glad to have him on the roster, calling him “a really good player we decided to add.”

“Excited to have him here,” Gannon said on Saturday. “I was with him in Indy. Phenomenal person and phenomenal teammate. Excited to get him acclimated,”

Mack was drafted by the Colts in 2017 and played for them into 2021. He had over 900 rushing yards in 2018 and over 1,000 in 2019.

Gannon was on the coaching staff there 2018-2020.

There is some question as to how much he has left. Since his 1,000 yard season, he has played in only 15 games and rushed for 211 yards.

He tore his Achilles in 2020.

“We’ll find out (how much he has left),” Gannon said. “He’s had some really good years. He’s been nicked like a lot of running backs have. If you ask him, he’s got a lot left in the tank.”

Gannon said the addition was not about the performance of other running backs like Keaontay Ingram.

“Add a good player” was the goal, said Gannon.

The Cardinals have been down a running back recently. Ingram has missed practices with an undisclosed injury. Gannon said he should be back soon.

In Mack’s first practice with the Cardinals, he was getting work with the third-team offense.

Cardinals sign RB Marlon Mack

Mack had more than 1,000 yards in 2019 but has appeared in only 15 games, rushing for 211 yards in the last three seasons.

The Arizona Cardinals had an off day in Friday but did make a roster move.

They added veteran running back Marlon Mack, signing him to a one-year deal. To make room for him on the roster, the Cardinals released long snapper Jack Coco.

Mack is a 6-foot, 210-pound back entering his seventh NFL season.

He was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the fourth round in 2017 and played for them for five seasons, surpassing 900 rushing yards in 2018 and 1,000 yards in 2019.

However, since 2019, he has appeared in only 15 games and has rushed for only 211 yards.

He split last season between the Denver Broncos and the San Francisco 49ers.

He adds experience to an otherwise inexperienced group of running backs behind starter James Conner.

This signing is not the running back addition many expected. It doesn’t feel like the running back room got much better unless Mack is something close to what he was in 2019.

5 free agent running backs the Browns could still target in free agency

Which veteran options remain at running back?

It came as a surprise for some fans when the Cleveland Browns did not take a running back in a loaded class in the 2023 NFL draft. Currently, the team has just Nick Chubb and Jerome Ford on the depth chart outside of a couple of players that will battle in camp for a possible practice squad spot. Could they turn back to the open market and find one in NFL free agency?

It would seem unlikely that the team doesn’t bring in another player at the position before camp and could likely choose a veteran with experience in the NFL. Here are five of the best remaining running back free agents a couple of months before training camp begins.

What will the Broncos do at running back this offseason?

“We need to add,” Broncos GM George Paton said of the team’s running back situation.

The Denver Broncos have an interesting situation at running back as they enter the 2023 NFL offseason.

Latavius Murray, Mike Boone and Marlon Mack are all scheduled to become unrestricted free agents on March 15. There’s been talk that Murray could re-sign, but Boone and Mack seem less likely to return.

The Broncos have said they expect Javonte Williams (knee) to be ready by Week 1, but that seems very optimistic (and unrealistic). Chase Edmonds is still under contract as well, but he will likely be asked to restructure.

Tyler Badie will also return, but he’s a long shot to win anything more than the RB4 role. Damarea Crockett and Tyreik McAllister are even less likely to earn notable roles this offseason.

So with Williams’ facing an uncertain status in 2023, the Broncos need to address the running back position this spring.

“We have a long way to go,” general manager George Paton said at the NFL combine last week. “I don’t know how many backs played. I look at our depth chart and we have, like, nine running backs. We obviously had a lot of injuries there. Javonte, we feel, will be healthy, [but] we need to add. We’re high on some of the guys that are up, some of the free agents. We do have Chase Edmonds coming back. We do need to add at that position.”

Paton went on to say that this year’s running back class is deep both in free agency and in the draft, which is obviously good news for Denver. Drafting a RB would be much more cost-effective than signing one, but we wouldn’t rule anything out on the RB front.

The position will be a key area to watch this offseason.

Broncos injuries: 2 players placed on injured reserve

ICYMI: Broncos placed G Dalton Risner + RB Marlon Mack on IR and promoted CB Ja’Quan McMillian + OT Will Sherman from the practice squad.

The Denver Broncos’ list of injured players continues to grow.

The Broncos placed guard Dalton Risner (elbow) and running back Marlon Mack (hamstring) on injured reserve on Tuesday, the team announced. Risner and Mack will now sit out the team’s season finale against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday before hitting free agency in March.

Quinn Bailey and Luke Wattenberg will likely be the top candidates to fill in for Risner on Sunday. At running back, Tyler Badie now becomes the team’s third-choice option behind Latavius Murray and Chase Edmonds.

To fill the spots formerly held by Risner and Mack on the active roster, Denver promoted cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian and offensive tackle Will Sherman from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. That leaves the team with two open spots on the practice squad going into Week 18.

The Broncos’ complete Wednesday injury report can be seen below.

Denver will practice again on Thursday and Friday before releasing a final injury report with game statuses for Sunday.

With starting quarterback Russell Wilson sidelined, Denver Broncos backup quarterback Brett Rypien helped the team defeat the Arizona Cardinals 24-15 at Empower Field at Mile High.

The Cardinals led the Broncos 6-3 at halftime following two ugly quarters of football that featured a Justin Simmons interception, eight sacks (including one strip-sack on Rypien) and a missed Denver field goal attempt.

In the second half, Arizona quarterback Colt McCoy was knocked out of the game with a concussion. That forced the Cardinals to turn to third-string quarterback Trace McSorley, who quickly led a field goal drive to make it 9-3.

Following that field goal, Rypien led a seven-play, 80-yard drive that ended with a three-yard touchdown run from Marlon Mack that gave the Broncos a 10-9 lead late in the third quarter.

Denver running back Latavius Murray later added a 10-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter to make it 17-9. Murray had his best game as a Bronco on Sunday, finishing the day with 24 carries for 130 yards.

Following a second Simmons interception, Rypien later threw a three-yard touchdown pass to tight end Eric Tomlinson to make it 24-9.

The Cardinals battled back and James Conner scored on a one-yard touchdown run, but after their two-point attempt failed, Arizona trailed 24-15 with just over six minutes remaining.

When the Cardinals later got the ball back, cornerback Pat Surtain intercepted a McSorely pass to seal the win.

On the injury front, Denver lost guard Quinn Meinerz to an eye injury in the first quarter and he did not return.

Up next for the Broncos is a Christmas Day showdown with the Los Angeles Rams on the road in Week 16.
