Sean Payton identifies unsung hero from Lil’Jordan Humphrey’s touchdown

Jarrett Stidham and Lil’Jordan Humphrey deserve praise, but coach Sean Payton also pointed out an unsung hero on the play: Michael Burton.

The Denver Broncos’ best play from their 16-9 win over the Los Angeles Chargers last week was a 54-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.

Broncos quarterback Jarrett Stidham and wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey both deserve praise for the score, but coach Sean Payton also pointed out an unsung hero on the play: fullback Michael Burton.

“If you watch that play and you guys will at some point I hope, watch Burton in the pickup,” Payton said after the game. “There’s times when we bring him on just from a physicality standpoint.

“He does a great job of picking up the A-gap pressure player, and it doesn’t seem like a lot, but what it did was allow ‘Stiddy’ to have a pocket to kind of climb. If you don’t get that pressure while it’s in the gap, then it’s a lot more difficult and the play doesn’t happen. I’d say [Burton’s] block was important.”

After that key block, Burton then ran down the field to deliver more key blocks to help Humphrey reach the endzone.

Here’s the play:

Notice Burton, who lines up in the backfield with Stidham before delivering a key block, then bolts down field to continue blocking.

That kind of play exemplifies why Payton signed Burton during free agency last spring. Burton is scheduled to become a free agent again in March, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Payton bring him back for another season.

Lil’Jordan Humphrey asks ‘Madden’ to improve his rating after 54-yard TD

After scoring a 54-yard touchdown against the Chargers, Broncos WR Lil’Jordan Humphrey wants EA Sports to improve his ‘Madden’ rating.

The best play of the Denver Broncos’ game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday came in the second quarter when quarterback Jarrett Stidham stepped up in the pocket and found wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey running across the field on third down.

Humphrey caught the ball at the 40-yard line and then made four Chargers defenders miss on his way to a 54-yard touchdown. It was an impressive catch and run and a play that helped secure a 16-9 win on Sunday.

“Just came up,” Humphrey said of the catch after the win. “Saw the look but they dropped out of it. Made a play. I’m just like, ‘Got to make it to the end zone. I want to make a play for the team.’”

After the game, Humphrey took to Twitter/X to ask EA Sports to improve his rating in the popular “Madden NFL” video game.

Humphrey is rated 66 overall in “Madden NFL 24.” After Sunday’s big play, it’s probably fair to say he deserves a boost.

“I saw them bring the blitz, and I had a lane to step up and I thought about taking off and running,” Stidham said of the play. “I just saw him out of the corner of my eye and gave him a ball, and he made an incredible play.

“At first, I thought he was down on the one-[yard line], so I was kind of bummed, but then I saw that they called a touchdown. So heck of a play by him and the rest of the guys for blocking down field.”

Humphrey has totaled 13 receptions for 162 yards and three touchdowns this season. His three scores are a career high and one more catch in the team’s season finale next week would give him another career high with 14 receptions.

“He’s been pretty consistent during the year, quietly,” coach Sean Payton said. “He’s that player in Chicago that makes a play. He’s big. He’s physical.

“He’s strong. I’m a little bit more familiar with him — but the confidence and the consistency. He’s had a good season especially as we acquired someone like him. He’s done a good job. I’m proud of him.”

Humphrey, 25, is set to become a free agent in March.

Studs and duds from Broncos’ 42-17 loss to Lions

The Denver Broncos have lost two of their last three games. Here are the studs and duds from Saturday’s loss.

The Denver Broncos went to Detroit to face the Lions on Saturday, and it did not go according to plan. The Broncos allowed five Jared Goff touchdowns and never really got going on offense in an all-around sluggish-looking effort.

We take a look at the studs and duds from the 42-17 loss.

Broncos lose to Lions 42-17, drop to 7-7

The Broncos will aim to shake off Saturday’s loss when they host the Patriots on Christmas Eve in Week 16.

The Denver Broncos saw their playoff chances take a hit on Saturday night when they lost to the Detroit Lions 42-17 in Week 15.

Denver’s defense forced a Detroit punt on the game’s opening drive. The Broncos then went 41 yards before quarterback Russell Wilson was strip-sacked at the Lions’ 39-yard line. Detroit recovered Wilson’s fumble and returned it to Denver’s 37-yard line.

The Lions failed to capitalize on that turnover and punted it back to the Broncos after going three-and-out. After Denver and Detroit traded punts to close out the first quarter, the Lions scored in the second quarter when Jared Goff threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to tight end Sam LaPorta to take a 7-0 lead.

Goff later threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to running back Jahmyr Gibbs to extend the lead to 14-0 midway through the second quarter. Just before halftime, Goff threw a third touchdown pass — this time a 15-yard toss to Amon-Ra St. Brown — to increase the lead to 21-0.

The Broncos started the second half well, going 75 yards and scoring on Wilson’s three-yard touchdown pass to Lil’Jordan Humphrey to make it 21-7. The Lions matched that score on their next drive when Goff threw another touchdown pass to LaPorta, making it 28-7.

Denver then went 70 yards down to Detroit’s one-yard line before Javonte Williams was ruled short of the goal line and coach Sean Payton chose not to challenge the potential score. Broncos fullback Michael Burton scored on the next play but the score was nullified by guard Quinn Meinerz being penalized for his helmet being offside at the snap.

After being backed up to the five-yard line, Denver settled for a 23-yard Wil Lutz field goal to make it 28-10 just before the start of the fourth quarter. Gibbs later scored on a 12-yard run to make it 35-10.

The Broncos went 62 yards on their next drive and Wilson scored on a one-yard run to cut the deficit to 35-17. Goff later threw another touchdown pass to LaPorta to make it 42-17 late in the fourth quarter.

With two minutes remaining trailing by 25 points, Denver put in backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham for the final drive of the game. Stidham did not attempt any passes as they ran out the clock with running plays to seal a 42-17 loss.

Up next for the Broncos is a Christmas Eve showdown with the New England Patriots in Week 16. That game is another NFL Network special.

Broncos notes: Roster moves and injury updates

The Broncos promoted WR Lil’Jordan Humphrey to the active roster on Wednesday and re-signed WR Michael Bandy to the practice squad.

The Denver Broncos made a pair of roster moves on Wednesday that will look familiar to fans in Broncos Country.

First, Denver re-signed wide receiver Michael Bandy to the practice squad. It’s a familiar transaction as Bandy has bounced on and off the practice squad since September.

Second, the Broncos promoted wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. Humphrey has also bounced between the practice squad and the active roster in recent weeks.

Denver had an open spot for Humphrey on the 53-man roster after losing safety Kareem Jackson a two-game suspension.

On the injury front, the Broncos look pretty healthy ahead of Sunday’s showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs. Denver running back Dwayne Washington was the only player held out of Wednesday’s practice.

The Broncos’ complete injury report can be seen below.

Player Wed Thur Fri Game Status
RB Dwyane Washington (knee) DNP
DB Justin Simmons (hip) Limited
OLB Baron Browning (wrist) Full

Denver will practice again on Thursday and Friday before releasing with a final injury report with game statuses for Sunday’s showdown with KC.

Broncos make several roster moves ahead of Packers game

The Broncos claimed Keondre Coburn off waivers from the Chiefs and activated Baron Browning to the 53-man roster ahead of the Packers game.

The Denver Broncos have made several roster moves ahead of Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers.

First, the Broncos claimed rookie nose tackle Keondre Coburn off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday. Coburn, a sixth-round pick in April, will give the team more depth on the defensive line.

To make room for Coburn on the active roster, Denver waived wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey. The Broncos then re-signed Humphrey to the practice squad on Saturday and elevated him to the game-day roster for Week 7. He will revert back to the practice squad on Monday.

To make room for Humphrey on the practice squad, Denver released fellow wide receiver Michael Bandy.

Additionally, the Broncos also placed tight end Greg Dulcich (hamstring) on injured reserve and activated outside linebacker Baron Browning from the reserve/physically unable to perform list to the 53-man roster. Those moves were expected.

Dulcich will now have to sit out four weeks before being eligible to return to the active roster. Browning returns this week after recovering from offseason knee surgery that forced him to miss the first six games of the season.

Sunday’s game will begin at 2:25 p.m. MT and will be televised on CBS in select TV markets. Green Bay is considered a slight favorite this week.
