Yet another former Saints player joins Sean Payton’s Broncos

Yet another former Saints player is teaming up with Sean Payton on the Broncos. Calvin Throckmorton has landed in a good place to compete:

Sean Payton might be building the whole plane out of former New Orleans Saints players, or at least his entire Denver Broncos roster. The ex-Saints head coach brought in yet another ex-Saints player to compete for a roster spot — the Broncos announced on Monday that Calvin Throckmorton had signed a one-year deal with the team.

Throckmorton, a former guard the Saints signed as an undrafted free agent out of Oregon, was waived during roster cuts last summer and initially landed with the Carolina Panthers. They later waived him, too, and he ended the 2023 season with the Tennessee Titans. Throckmorton started most of the 2021 season at right guard (five games) or left guard (10 games) under Payton before being demoted to a backup role in 2022.

It’s possible Throckmorton could compete at center in Denver, but he’s likeliest to back up Quinn Meinerz and Ben Powers at guard. He also played a lot of snaps at tackle in college, so he has options. We’ll see if he’s in the lineup when Payton and the Broncos visit New Orleans for a game at the Caesars Superdome in the fall.

Broncos sign ex-Titans OL Calvin Throckmorton

Former Titans OL Calvin Throckmorton has found a new home with the Broncos.

The Tennessee Titans have gone through more offensive linemen over the past few seasons than any fan can keep up with. That trend of shuffling guys in and out will hopefully be a thing of the past going forward.

One of those guys who was thrown into the mix in 2023 will have a new home in 2024. Guard Calvin Throckmorton has inked a one-year deal with the Denver Broncos, the team announced on Monday.

Throckmorton had a tumultuous 2023 season. The lineman started with the New Orleans Saints, but was waived as part of final cuts in August. He was then claimed by the Carolina Panthers, where he would stay until November before being waived again.

The Titans claimed the lineman after injuries were piling up. Throckmorton appeared in six games for Tennessee, filling in at guard. PFF was not fond of Throckmorton’s play last season, with the lineman receiving a 47.9 grade.

Throckmorton joins Aaron Brewer as former Titans linemen who have signed elsewhere this offseason. The Titans also parted ways with Andre Dillard, who disappointed in his lone Titans season.

In return, the Titans dished out a massive contract to Lloyd Cushenberry, a center previously of the Broncos. Saahdiq Charles, formerly of the Washington Commanders, was also brought in as a depth piece.

In Denver, Throckmorton will compete for a backup guard spot.

Former Panthers OL reuniting with Sean Payton in Denver

Former Panthers G Calvin Throckmorton is rejoining a familiar coach for 2024.

Some of Calvin Throckmorton’s best playing days in the NFL came under head coach Sean Payton. So, he’s looking to run it back with his old pal.

As announced on Monday, Payton and the Denver Broncos have added Throckmorton on a one-year deal. In addition to the Saints, the 27-year-old offensive lineman was also a member of the Carolina Panthers in 2023.

The Bellevue, Wash. native attended the University of Oregon from 2015 to 2019, where he earned AP Third-team All-American honors in his final season. He’d then be signed by New Orleans as an undrafted free agent in 2020.

Throckmorton appeared in 31 games for the Saints between 2021 and 2022. He recorded 12 starts over that time—with 12 coming at left guard, seven at right guard and one at left tackle.

Carolina kept Throckmorton in the NFC South at the beginning of the 2023 campaign, claiming him off waivers from the Saints on Aug. 30. He went on to start four games at right guard and three at left guard before his release on Nov. 15.

Broncos sign OL Calvin Throckmorton to 1-year contract

The Broncos have signed versatile offensive lineman Calvin Throckmorton to a one-year deal. He has 27 career starts on his resume.

The Denver Broncos have signed offensive lineman Calvin Throckmorton (27) to a one-year contract, the team announced Monday.

Throckmorton (6-5, 311 pounds) entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Oregon with the New Orleans Saints in 2020. The versatile offensive lineman played all five spots on the offensive line with the Ducks before joining the Saints as a guard.

After spending his rookie season on the practice squad, Throckmorton started 14 games in New Orleans in 2021 (coach Sean Payton’s final season with the Saints). He then started six games in 2022 before being waived after training camp in 2023.

The Carolina Panthers claimed Throckmorton off waivers last summer and he started seven games before being cut halfway through the season. He was then claimed by the Tennessee Titans and dressed for six games.

The Broncos already have their two guard spots covered with Quinn Meinerz and Ben Powers, so Throckmorton will be a backup in Denver unless the team plans to move him to center (he spent some time at center in college).

After previously signing offensive tackle Matt Peart to a one-year deal, the Broncos have now shored up their offensive line depth ahead of the draft. We are tracking all of Denver’s free agent signings on Broncos Wire.

Titans claim G Calvin Throckmorton off waivers among 2 moves

The Titans made a pair of roster moves on Wednesday.

Tennessee Titans Fans have been clamoring for the team to make some kind of move on the offensive line — and they got their wish granted on Wednesday.

According to the league’s transactions wire, Tennessee was awarded the services of guard Calvin Throckmorton off waivers from the Carolina Panthers.

To make room for the interior lineman, Tennessee placed linebacker Chance Campbell on injured reserve after he hurt himself in pre-game warmups prior to last Sunday’s 20-6 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Throckmorton has been in the NFL for three seasons, playing in a combined total of 40 games with 27 starts, including seven this season. Three of those starts came at left guard, with the other four occurring at right guard.

The Titans were one of two teams who placed a waiver claim on the Oregon product, with the San Francisco 49ers being the other interested team.

Here is what Panthers head coach Frank Reich about the recent decision to part ways with Throckmorton:

“Hard decision,” Reich said, per Anthony Rizzuti of Panthers Wire. “Throck did a good job as a veteran comin’ in here. Very dependable, very smart player. Chandler [Zavala] had been our starter and he got injured and we’re developin’ young guys the whole time. Hey, you never know how this league works out, Throck could be back here sooner rather than later. You never know how things go. But love the contribution that he made and the person he is.”

According to Pro Football Focus, Throckmorton has played a total of 508 snaps and allowed 16 pressures but no sacks, and he’s only accounted for one penalty.

Titans claim G Calvin Throckmorton off waivers from Panthers

G Calvin Throckmorton, who was released by the Panthers on Tuesday, has been claimed off waivers by the Titans.

Carolina Panthers head coach Frank Reich left the door open for Calvin Throckmorton on Wednesday. But that door, not long after, was promptly closed.

As first noted by ESPN’s Field Yates, the Tennessee Titans have claimed the veteran guard off waivers from the Panthers. Reich said the following of Throckmorton, who was released by the team on Tuesday:

“Throck did a good job as a veteran comin’ in here. Very dependable, very smart player. Chandler [Zavala] had been our starter and he got injured and we’re developin’ young guys the whole time. Hey, you never know how this league works out, Throck could be back here sooner rather than later. You never know how things go. But love the contribution that he made and the person he is.”

Throckmorton, who was signed to the active roster prior to the regular-season opener, started seven games for Carolina—with four coming at right guard and the final three at left guard.

Reich also told reporters that rookie Chandler Zavala will now fill the vacancy at left guard starting this Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.

Chandler Zavala to start at LG in Week 11 vs. Cowboys

Rookie Chandler Zavala will be starting for the Panthers at LG in Week 11.

You don’t often see teams just simply part ways with a starting offensive lineman, especially in today’s NFL. But the Carolina Panthers did it on Tuesday.

Calvin Throckmorton, who had started the last three games at left guard, was released yesterday afternoon. Head coach Frank Reich was asked about the move on Wednesday.

“Hard decision,” Reich replied.

Reich confirmed that Zavala will resume his starting role at left guard, beginning here in Week 11 against the Dallas Cowboys. The 2023 fourth-round pick has not played since being carted off with a neck injury in the Week 5 loss to the Detroit Lions.

Per Pro Football Focus, Zavala has allowed 27 pressures—the second-most on the team. They have also given the rookie a 9.6 pass-blocking grade, the second-lowest in their entire database for the season.

Panthers’ updated roster following Tuesday’s moves

The Panthers added LB Tae Davis and OT David Sharpe to their active roster on Tuesday. Leaving the group will be G Calvin Throckmorton.

The Carolina Panthers parted ways with their starting left guard on Tuesday, releasing Calvin Throckmorton after eight games. But they also made a couple of additions to the active roster as well.

Joining in will be linebacker Tae Davis and offensive tackle David Sharpe, who was promoted from the practice squad a day after his return.

So, let’s take an updated look at the current roster for the Panthers:

Panthers sign LB Tae Davis, OT David Sharpe to active roster

The Panthers have added LB Tae Davis and OT David Sharpe to their active roster.

The Carolina Panthers opened up a spot on their active roster on Tuesday, as they announced the release of starting left guard Calvin Throckmorton. They’ve also announced who will be filling that spot.

Joining the locker room will be linebacker Tae Davis. The 27-year-old defender was released by the Atlanta Falcons last week.

Davis, who played his college ball for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, broke into the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the New York Giants in 2018. He recorded five starts over 18 games in New York between 2018 and 2019—amassing 33 combined tackles, 2.0 sacks, five quarterback hits and a forced fumble.

He’d then sign on with the Cleveland Browns after being waived in the middle of the 2019 campaign. Davis ultimately chalked up a pair of stints for Cleveland, where he notched 12 tackles over 27 contests.

The six-foot, 222-pounder played in eight games for Atlanta this season, with 174 of his 175 total snaps coming on special teams.

Carolina also promoted offensive tackle David Sharpe, who was signed to the practice squad on Monday, back to the active roster.
