Chiefs DL Chris Jones, Mike Pennel surprise fans with tickets for ‘Crucial Catch’ game vs. Saints

#Chiefs linemen Chris Jones and Mike Pennel surprised two fans with tickets to Kansas City’s ‘Crucial Catch’ game against the #Saints.

As part of the Kansas City Chiefs’ community initiatives, defensive linemen Chris Jones and Mike Pennel helped the team raise cancer awareness in partnership with the K.U. Cancer Center.

Pennel, who is a survivor of childhood cancer, joined Jones to deliver a huge surprise to a local area fan who recently underwent a battle with breast cancer.

The two linemen gave breast cancer survivor Jill Shahan and oncologist Jamie Wagner of the K.U. Cancer Center tickets to see the Chiefs play against the New Orleans Saints at Arrowhead Stadium in Week 5.

Shanahan and Wagner also threw the ceremonial first pass before Kansas City’s ‘Crucial Catch’ game last week.

Check out this video of their experience, which was shared by the Chiefs’ official Twitter account:

Expect the team to feature more stories like this in the future as it continues to raise awareness about cancer screening through the NFL’s ‘Crucial Catch’ initiatives.

NFL analyst on Chiefs DL Chris Jones: ‘an unblockable force’

Check out what NFL Network analyst Brian Baldinger had to say about #Chiefs DL Chris Jones after Kansas City’s Week 5 victory over the #Saints

NFL Network analyst Brian Baldinger was fired up when he saw the film of Chris Jones’ performance in the Kansas City Chiefs’ win over the New Orleans Saints “Monday Night Football.”

Though Jones didn’t record a sack in the game, his remarkable effort against the Saints’ front five helped keep New Orleans’ offense at bay.

In Baldinger’s film review of Kansas City’s 26-13 victory, he shared his analysis of Jones’ outstanding showing against the Saints and broke down multiple plays in slow motion to show fans just how dominant the veteran pass rusher was in Week 5.

Check out this clip that Baldinger posted to Twitter on Tuesday, where he called Jones “an unblockable force”:

Though Jones’ impact on the stat sheet was relatively mediocre, his presence made all the difference in the Chiefs’ latest win.

Fans will have to wait until October 20 to see Jones back in action when Kansas City faces the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium in Week 7.

Colin Cowherd calls Chiefs a no-excuses team: ‘They just make it work’

Colin Cowherd praised the #Chiefs’ resilience this week after Kansas City’s win over the New Orleans #Saints on “Monday Night Football.”

After the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the New Orleans Saints on “Monday Night Football” in Week 5, FS1 commentator Colin Cowherd gave his two cents on the defending Super Bowl champions’ efforts this season.

In a segment on his show “The Herd with Colin Cowherd,” the veteran broadcaster explained to his viewers that while every other team in the NFL seems to be affected by different sets of circumstances, the Chiefs seem to be immune to the ups and downs of the regular season.

Check out the full clip of Cowherd’s comments below, which was posted by Herd w/ Colin Cowherd’s official Twitter account on Tuesday:

Kansas City will have a week off after dominating the Saints in Week 5. It will resume regular season play against the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium on October 20.

Stay tuned to see if the Chiefs can keep their undefeated season alive and stay immune to the circumstances that Cowherd talked about as they look to complete the NFL’s first-ever Super Bowl three-peat.

Broncos CB Pat Surtain named AFC Defensive Player of the Week

Congrats to Broncos CB Pat Surtain for being named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week!

Denver Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain has been named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week following the team’s 34-18 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 5.

Surtain totaled three tackles, two pass breakups and two interceptions (including a 100-yard pick-six) during Sunday’s win.

Surtain has now recorded 14 tackles, four pass breakups and two interceptions through five games this fall.

“He made a good play,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said of Surtain’s pick-six. “He made a real good play. The significance of the play is it is a 10-point play because they are probably at a minimum going to kick a field goal from where it happened at. That was a huge play for us.

“At that point, all of a sudden now it is 10-7. This game constantly goes back and forth. When you score on defense, you win 80 percent of the time, and then three turnovers to none. Certainly, it was a huge play, at least a 10-point play.”

This marks the second Player of the Week award for Surtain in his career (Week 12 in 2021). It’s also the second time a Broncos player has taken home such honors this season (kicker Wil Lutz in Week 3). Surtain is the fifth defender in franchise history to win multiple Player of the Week awards, joining Aqib Talib (twice), Dre’Mont Jones (twice), Karl Mecklenburg (three times) and Von Miller (four times).

Surtain has earned two Pro Bowl nods and a first-team All-Pro selection through his first three seasons in the NFL. Now in his fourth year, PS2 is well on his way to more accolades this fall, and he is an early contender for the Defensive Player of the Year award.

AFC East roundup: What happened in the division in Week 5

AFC East roundup: What happened in the division in Week 5

The Buffalo Bills lost in Week 5 to the Houston Texans, 23-20. Despite the second consecutive road loss, the Bills remain atop the AFC East with their record of 3-2.

Like Buffalo, the rest of the AFC East was in action. How did each fare last week, and how does the division stack up right now?

Here is a quick recap of all the action that went down in the AFC East with the Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, and New England Patriots:

Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins outlasted the Patriots in Week 5 by a score of 15-10 at Gillette Stadium. The Dolphins (2-3) have already played four different quarterbacks this year: Tua Tagovailoa, Skylar Thompson, Tim Boyle, and Tyler Huntley.

Given these circumstances, 2-3 doesn’t look so bad through five weeks. Still, this is a team that had high hopes of taking over the division in 2024. They came up just short last year in the AFC East race, and that may be as close as they get in a while if Tagovailoa remains out due to his health.

After the 15-10 loss at home to the Dolphins, the Patriots sit at 1-4 on the year and will have to face the 4-1 Texans in Week 6.

There are rumblings that rookie quarterback Drake Maye might start. The team is already desperate to try to find some juice on offense after five games. Maye has the potential to provide some juice, but his rookie year will most likely see some struggles given the supporting cast he’ll have on offense.

The New York Jets had a tall task in Week 5. They had to travel to London and take on the undefeated Minnesota Vikings. They lost the game, 23-17, and fell to 2-3 on the year. The game wasn’t the only thing they lost this week.

On Tuesday morning, the Jets announced the firing of head coach Robert Saleh. This was a shock to just about everyone around the NFL given it has only been five games. The Jets seem to have no patience in the Aaron Rodgers era. They want to win right now. We’ll see how they look with interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich (defensive coordinator) when they host the Bills in Week 6 on “Monday Night Football.”

WATCH: Ref makes hilarious mistake during Bills-Texans

WATCH: Ref makes hilarious mistake during Bills-Texans:

Clay Martin, head referee for the Week 5 clash between the Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans, added to the NFL referee blooper reel on Sunday.

While trying to tell the audience that quarterback Josh Allen had stepped out of bounds before fumbling late in the first quarter, Martin fumbled himself:

“After crew discussion, the runner was out of bounds before he fumbled the basketball,” Martin said.

Basketball season is right around the corner, and with Martin currently serving as head coach for a high school varsity basketball program, the mistake is justified. But, the blooper will live on forever.

Watch the full call from Martin here:

One more time: Bills’ Keon Coleman takes it 49 yards to the house

One more time: Bills’ Keon Coleman takes it 49 yards to the house

The Buffalo Bills are busy preparing to take on the New York Jets on Monday Night Football in Week 6.

Before we go there, let’s look back at Week 5.

The Bills (3-2) fell to the Houston Texans, 23-20. Although there wasn’t much to celebrate in the loss, rookie Keon Coleman’s long touchdown is worth a second look.On a crucial fourth-and-five in the third quarter, Coleman caught a pass on a curl and ran up the sideline for a TD. The play was huge for the Bills, bringing them within three points.

For Coleman, the 49-yard catch-and-run was the longest play of his young career. Although it was his only catch of the game, plays like this will grow the trust Josh Allen has in him.

He now has two touchdowns through five weeks of his young career.

Before looking forward to the Jets (2-3), let’s take one last look at the play:

Brian Baldinger breaks down film of Bo Nix and Broncos’ defense

NFL Network’s Brian Baldinger broke down film of Broncos quarterback Bo Nix and the team’s impressive defense this week.

Following the Denver Broncos‘ win over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 5, NFL Network’s Brian Baldinger took to Twitter/X this week to break down the performance of quarterback Bo Nix and more.

“We’ve seeing, watching, rapid development by Bo Nix in the last three weeks,” Baldinger said in his video breakdown of the rookie’s performance.

Later in the video, Baldinger showed Nix’s “absolutely perfect throw” to wide receiver Troy Franklin in the fourth quarter.

“The Broncos are improving quickly,” Baldinger said. “We know defensively they’re great, [and] the quarterback’s coming on, and they’re executing well up front.”

Here is Baldinger’s review of Nix and the offense:

Baldinger’s breakdowns remain a highlight of the week for Broncos fans. Denver will look to keep the winning streak going when the Los Angeles Chargers visit Empower Field at Mile High in Week 6.

PFF: Chris Jones earned Chiefs’ highest grade in Week 5 win vs. Saints

According to Pro Football Focus, veteran DL Chris Jones was the #Chiefs’ highest-graded player in Kansas City’s Week 5 win over the #Saints.

The Kansas City Chiefs secured their fifth victory of the 2024 regular season on Monday after defeating the New Orleans Saints 26-13 to keep their perfect record alive heading into a Week 6 bye.

The Chiefs’ offense was firing on all cylinders, totaling 460 yards and dominating the time of possession with a 20-plus minute advantage at the end of the game.

The real star of the matchup on “Monday Night Football,” however, was Kansas City’s defense, which stymied New Orleans in all four quarters.

Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has masterminded the fifth-best run defense in the NFL, led by star defensive lineman Chris Jones.

On Tuesday, the experts at Pro Football Focus released a list of the Chiefs’ top-graded players in Kansas City’s Week 5 win, and the All-Pro pass rusher led the pack with a mark of 93.2:

Jones was dominant in the Chiefs’ Week 5 win, tallying six quarterback pressures and two combined tackles to keep quarterback Derek Carr and running back Alvin Kamara at bay.

NFL playoff picture: Broncos are currently AFC’s sixth seed

If the season ended today, the Broncos would make the NFL playoffs as the AFC’s sixth seed.

Following three straight wins, the Denver Broncos (3-2) are suddenly in contention to make the NFL playoffs as the AFC’s current sixth seed.

There’s still a lot of football left to be played, but if the season ended today, the Broncos would be a playoff team. Here’s a look at the standings for the top seven seeds in the AFC going into Week 6 of the 2024 NFL season.

AFC playoff picture

  1. Kansas City Chiefs (5-0)
  2. Houston Texans (4-1)
  3. Baltimore Ravens (3-2)
  4. Buffalo Bills (3-2)
  5. Pittsburgh Steelers (3-2)
  6. Denver Broncos (3-2)
  7. Los Angeles Chargers (2-2)

Denver has a huge game coming up against the Chargers in Week 6 that will have big implications in the AFC West and in the conference overall. L.A. is coming off its bye week going into the game.

Each conference (the AFC and the NFC) sends four division winners and three wild card teams to the playoffs. Right now, the Broncos are in a wild card spot with 12 games left to play.
